This week we take a look at
the Best of the Best of Best.
Jason Belmonte: Jason is
still searching for a U.S. Open
title. He finished second in
Columbus, Ohio falling to Wes
Malott. He is having one of the
best runs in bowling right now.
One little fact that most people
don’t know or realize, Jason is
deadly accurate. Two-handed
and accurate? That makes him
the odds on favorite.
Chris Barnes: Just recently,
we got hit with some tough
news. Chris, 2005 U.S. Open
champ, will be undergoing
back surgery and may be

of Fred Barnes, TJ Johnson
and Mark Busscher qualified

place qualifying Intrigues (Bill
Keenan, Kerry Fulford and Bob
Troutt).
The Intrigues then lost the
second match 244-194 to the
Wild Things (Bob McGregor,
Mike Warren and Phil Kepner).
In the 3rd match, the
Rampage team of Willie Wells,
Donald Robinson and Cordell

the Wild Things 215-212.

Tomball, Texas, (September 29, 2015) – Mike Bailey
from Allen, Texas, successfully defended his Professional
Bowlers Association Tomball
Open title, winning his fourth
PBA Southwest Regional title
Sunday after Stefanie Johnson
of Grand Prairie, Texas, topped
the PWBA/PBA Tomball
Southwest Women’s Open field
on Saturday.
The Open tournament also
saw Shawn Maldonado’s four
consecutive tournament win
streak come to an end as the
Houston two-handed player
finished fifth.
Bailey, who finished the
21-game tournament with a 7-1
match play record and 5,240
total pins, started the final
position round match with a
55-pin lead over amateur Eric
Traylor of Friendswood, Texas,
and his 243-216 win over Traylor clinched his $2,500 first
place check. Also in position
round, Andy Patterson from
Tyler, Texas, defeated Anthony

The 20th Annual Teen
Masters Tournament promises
to be the best ever; and one of
the first qualifying rounds for
the 2016 National Championship Finals will be held in the
dynamic city of Frisco, future
home of the Dallas Cowboys
in North Texas. Frisco’s Strikz
Entertainment Center will host
the event.
Saturday and Sunday
October 24-25, youth bowlers can test their skills in
the only youth tournament
where a level playing field is
guaranteed. All contestants in
the High School and the 14 and
Under Divisions are required
to use two specially made Teen
Masters PBA Skill balls during
competition, and lane oil pattern will comply with exact TM
conditions designed by Kegel to
emphasize individual mental
and physical ability rather than
the size of a bowler’s arsenal.
“This event is about what
Frisco, TX
you can do with a bowling ball
rather than just having the
right ball in your hand at the
right time,” PBA Deputy Commissioner Kirk Von Krueger
told the Bowling News Network
in a recent interview. Von
Krueger also serves as the Teen
Masters Tournament Director
for the TM National Finals.
Teen Masters founder and
promoter Gary Beck is very excited to launch his 20th annual
season in Frisco. The event has

Tony Franklin, Publisher
Well its official folks…its
playoff time in Texas.
That’s right, the Texas
Rangers have won the AL
West and will be travelling to
Toronto to face the Blue Jays in
the first round of the playoffs.
I’m super excited and super
shocked all at the same time.
If you recall, and I’m sure
you don’t, but I predicted the
Rangers would win 76 games,
they finished with 88 thanks
to some stellar play to end the
season.
The DFW area has seen
some of the strangest happenings in local sports in the last
year.
2014-15 Cowboys looked terrible and were easily on target
to win 5 games, but somehow
finished with 12 wins and
made the playoffs.
2015 Rangers looked terrible
and were easily on target for 60
wins, but somehow finish with
88 wins and make the playoffs.
2015-16 Cowboys looked
great going into the season
and were easily on target for
11 wins, but Romo goes down
along with everyone else, and
are suddenly looking at 5 wins
again.
You know what I know…
nothing.
I know who does know
WALK OF FAME
am just going to concentrate
shot by shot.” I asked him
his thoughts on not knowing
the pattern until practice day.
He said, “I don’t bother with
that. I am not going in with a
preconceived notion of how the
pattern will play. I build my
ideas on practice day and go
from there.”
Tommy Jones: Another
former U.S. Open champion
who won the title in 2006.
Tommy has had his struggles.
Tommy went five years without
winning in the U.S. until
earlier this year, he won the
Bear Open at the Summer
Swing in Oklahoma. The Bear

sidelined for this event. Most of
the bowlers are praying to the
bowling gods he will not bowl.
If he does, look out. He will be
on a vengeance and looking for
blood.
Bill O’Neill: Bill, 2010 U.S.
Open champ, is on a great run
right now as well. Winning
this event would make him a
solid front-runner for Player
of the Year. I talked to Bill
about the POY and he said, “It
definitely weighs on my mind,
but I don’t let it affect me. I

something, the magical magician of predictions, Chris “Real
Deal” Johnson. He predicted
the Rangers with 93 wins and
a World Series title on the
strength of a Prince Fielder
home run. And while they
didn’t win 93, they sure could
of, and they’re still alive for
that Fielder home run to win
it all. I don’t know where he
keeps his crystal ball, but he
has clear vision with it.
As for our other prognosticators on the baseball
season, only Genie and Karleen
Reynolds were even remotely
close, as they guessed 80 wins.
Well, the good news is we’re
going to get to sit back and
enjoy the Rangers ride!!!
Open pattern coincidentally is
the U.S. Open pattern replica.
Tommy likes them tough. And
the U.S. Open is the toughest
around. Tommy says, “I try
not to get ahead of myself. I
will try to work my way into
things and let them fall into
place. Focus on the task, not
on the prize.”
Pete Weber: He has won
this event a million times. No
matter what pattern or format,
all he does is win. Pete is the
ageless wonder when it comes
to this event. He turns on a
dial and bad ass kicks in. He
has not been available for
comment, but last I heard he
said, “Who do you think you
are? I am!”
Wes Malott: Since his knee
surgery, he has become Bionic
Man. Wes is the defending
champion for this event. It’s
hard enough to win this event,
but to defend is borderline
impossible. Wes knows he has
a target on his back. Until he is
knocked off the pedestal, he is
the man to beat.
Sean Rash: Sean hasn’t
fared well in this event. He has
yet to make a U.S. Open show.
I talked to him and he said he
has searched long and hard
for his inner demon and plans
to bring it out. I don’t know if
that makes him the deadliest or
the weakest. Either way, he is
still one of the best.

Barnes is expecting to be
on at least a two month hiatus
from bowling if not three. He
said that he’s not sure exactly where the condition came
from, “I was bowling a lot more
after hurting my groin early in
the year. The pain is marginal;
the real issue is weakness in
the right leg. It’s mush.”
The good news for Barney
is that he found a great doctor and he’s getting it treated
quickly.

CHRIS BARNES TO
UNDERGO BACK SURGERY,
WITHDRAWS FROM PBA FALL
CLASSIC
Eighteen-time PBA Tour
champion Chris Barnes, 45,
of Double Oak, Texas, has
withdrawn from the South
Point PBA Fall Classic and will
undergo back surgery next
week in Dallas to repair a
herniated disc.
“Nothing specific happened,” Barnes said, noting an
extensive schedule of competition in Korea, PBA Southwest
Regional competition and with
Team USA in recent weeks
aggravated the condition.
“The last time I got off the
plane, it hurt all the way down
to my shoes,” Barnes said. “The
pain part is manageable, but I
just don’t have any strength in
my right leg, so it’s time to get
it fixed.”
Barnes said the “discectomy” involves trimming
a portion of the disk that’s
leaning on the nerve to alleviate the pain.
“It’s the same thing (Dallas Cowboys quarterback)
Tony Romo had done and it’ll
be done by the same doctor,
Barnes noted. “Recovery time
is a guess at this point, but I’d
think the (GEICO PBA) World
Series (of Bowling VII) is very
much a long shot at this point.”
Barnes was scheduled to
bowl in the PBA Fall Classic
PBA Team Challenge with
the 4 POY & A Nice Run team
along with fellow past/current
PBA Players of the Year Jason
Belmonte, Tommy Jones and
Wes Malott and frequent POY
contender Bill O’Neill. Barnes
also was paired with Jones
for the Mark Roth-Marshall
Holman PBA Doubles Championship. His replacement for
both events has not yet been
announced.
PBA ANNOUNCES CHRIS
PAUL FAMILY FOUNDATION
CELEBRITY INVITATIONAL
DATE
The PBA has announced
the seventh Chris Paul Family Foundation PBA Celebrity
Invitational will be held on
Thursday, Jan. 7, at a site to be
determined in Los Angeles. The
annual fundraiser to benefit
the NBA superstar’s foundation
will be televised on ESPN on a
delayed basis on Sunday, Feb.
28 at 1 p.m. ET.
In addition to the four
major championships recently announced, the PBA has
confirmed the dates for several
additional tournaments that
will be covered exclusively
by Xtra Frame, PBA’s online
bowling channel. For the most
current 2016 PBA Tour schedule, check under the “schedule”

PBA, PWBA-PBA WOMEN’S
REGIONAL CHALLENGE
QUALIFYING FIELDS SET…
ALMOST
Seven domestic PBA Region-
al competition points leaders,
and six of seven PWBA-PBA
Women’s Regional points
leaders, have been decided for
the PBA Challenge qualifying
events that will be conducted
during the GEICO PBA World
Series of Bowling VII in Reno
in December. Each of the
points leaders also receives a
paid entry to compete in the
World Series itself.
While qualifying in the
regional program ended on
Sept. 30, the PWBA-PBA
Women’s East Region points
race received a one-week
extension because of an earlier
date conflict with the PWBA
Tour schedule. Therefore, the
Maple City Dodge PWBA East
Open presented by 900 Global
in Hornell, N.Y., this weekend
will decide the East Region’s
women’s champion. Heading
into the event, six women are
mathematically in the running: points leader Danielle
McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y.,
and challengers Kerry Smith
of Lititz, Pa.; Stephanie Casey
of Yonkers, N.Y.; Colombian native Rocio Restropo
of Louisville, Ky.; Amanda
Greene of Romney, W.Va., and
Liz Kuhlkin of Rotterdam, N.Y.
While she’s still in the race in
the East, Restropo has already
won her spot in Reno as the
PBA Central Region’s women’s
points leader.
The other PBA Regional
players who have punched
their tickets to WSOB VII and
the PBA Challenge qualifying
events are as follows:
East Region – Patrick Allen,
Mount Kisco, N.Y.; women’s
winner to be determined.
South Region – Tom Daugherty, Wesley Chapel, Fla.; Elise
Bolton, Merritt Island, Fla.
Central Region – Patrick
Dombrowski, Parma, Ohio;
Rocio Restrepo, Louisville, Ky.
Midwest Region – Mitch
Beasley, Clarksville, Tenn.;
Inngellimar Beasley, Clarksville, Tenn.
Southwest Region – Nathan
Bohr, Austin, Texas; Clara
Guerrero, Pflugerville, Texas.
West Region – Josh
Blanchard, Gilbert, Ariz.; Missy
Parkin, Laguna Hills, Calif.
Northwest Region – Scott
Norton, Mission Viejo, Calif.;
April Lord Wittig, Steilacoom,
Wash.
Japan Region – to be
announced.
Also earning berths in the
World Series as the PBA50
Tour’s 2015 points leaders are
Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo.; Mike
Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas;
Parker Bohn III, Jackson,
N.J.; Walter Ray Williams Jr.,
Oxford, Fla.; Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela; Brian LeClair,
Fulton, N.Y.; Jack Jurek,
Lackawanna, N.Y., and Bob
Learn Jr., Erie, Pa.
The PBA Regional and
PBA50 qualifiers will bowl an
eight-game, round-robin match
play event at the National
Bowling Stadium in Reno on
Monday, Dec. 7. To avoid a conflict with the World Bowling
Women’s World Championships
Dec. 5-14 in UAE, the PWBAPBA Women’s Regional match
play qualifier will be held on
Friday, Dec. 18. In all three
events, the top two players
after eight games will advance
to the PBA Challenge Finals
which will be contested on
Saturday, Dec. 19, for telecast
on ESPN on Sunday, Jan. 24, at
3 p.m. ET.
The PBA Challenge Finals
telecast also will include the
Teen Masters Grand Championship match between 2015 boys’
and girls’ division winners
Brandon Soedarmasto of Levittown, N.Y., and Brigitte Jacobs
of Freeport, Ill.

DALLAS - The Dallas USBC
Youth Association recently held
its City High Award Presentation Ceremony to honor the
boys and girls who in their
respective age divisions bowled
the highest series or game
during the 2014-15 bowling
season.
These scores were bowled in
Dallas USBC Youth Association
league competition or Association sponsored tournaments.
Divisions are based on the
bowler’s age on 8/1/2014 as
follows: Bantams - ages 8 and
under, Preps – age 9-11, Juniors
– ages 12-14, Majors – 15 and
older.
In all, 16 bowlers were honored for their accomplishments.
This is just a small representation of the many wonderfully
talented youth bowlers in the
Dallas area. We are proud of
each of these bowlers, and look
forward to seeing what they
will accomplish in the coming
year.
We are also grateful to
the centers that support and
encourage our youth bowlers.
These youth bowlers are the
ones who will be keeping the
sport of bowling going in the
future.

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
Books about knocking down
ten wooden objects that weigh
thirty-five pounds, placed in
triangles, continue to make
themselves known in the literary world.
In a recent interview on
‘The Bowlers Show’, Bowlers
Journal International editor
Gianmarc Manzione disclosed
his critically-acclaimed book,
‘’Pin Action’’, is being readied
for a paperback release by
publisher Pegasus Books in
February.
That wasn’t the biggest
news about the book. Gold
Circle Films has optioned the
book, which means they are
looking into the possibility of
making it into a full-length
feature movie.
Gold Circle Films is the
same film company that
released ‘My Big Fat Greek
Wedding’, ‘White Noise’, and
the recent ‘Pitch Perfect’ series.
They specialize in romantic
and horror films.
Knowing how movie options
work, it could be a couple
of years or longer before we
have to worry about who gets
a red carpet invitation for the
premiere. I can tell you if it’s
sooner, seeing Ernie and Cathy
Schlegel on a red carpet at a
movie premiere would be a
one-of-a-kind photo op.
###############
Another book about New
York City’s action bowling
scene has hit bookstores.
“Redemption Alley: How I
Lived To Bowl Another Frame,”
a second version of Bob Perry’s
life and times was released last
week.
This story is a little more
grim and dark then Manzione’s
“Pin Action” story of Ernie
Schlegel.
The book was picked up by
Rodale Press, details Bob Perry
and his life as a young action
bowler, his mob ties, numerous
vices, time in federal prison,
spending several years living
homeless, then finding salvation living clean and sober of
the last two-plus decades. Also
detailed into the salvation was
winning the 1997 Super Bowl
High Roller, featuring his type
of parlay, action bowling.
################
Manzione covered a wide
variety of topics on this appearance on ‘The Bowlers Show.’
Among the highlights was
a reference to the peaks and
valleys of the bowling business
and industry over the years
He referred to a series of
articles at bowlersjournal.com
by retired BJI publisher Mort
Luby, Jr.
“One of the things he
explains is the cyclical nature
of bowling’s struggles over
time. There were times forty,
fifty, or sixty years ago things
seemed just as bummed out
as they have seen of late. The
bowling industry has always
bounced back. The funny thing
is each generation experiences
the bowling world at its lowest
point thinks that we’re never
coming back from this, but
historically, it always has. The
key to the success now may
be the Olympic run, being one
of the final eight sports for
inclusion into the 2020 Games,”
said Manzione.
Lane Laughter
He also believed a 2020
Olympic appearance would
bring a previously unknown
surge to the industry.
“Sponsorship comes in,
coaches have jobs, coaches who
should have had jobs will have
an easier time finding work
because there will be a demand
for their services. There will
be an interest in building
training centers around the
world, which is good for capital
equipment companies. There is
just so many different ways in
which that can be such a huge
boon for bowling,” concluded
the Bowlers Journal International editor.
But now, who knows when
this scenario will play out. But
as pointed out by World Bowling President Kevin Dornberger
in a Bowlers Journal podcast
with Manzione Monday
September 28, first time sports
appearing on that eight-sport
short list have yet to make it in
on the first try. Also remember,
this decision was the preference of the Tokyo Olympic
Committee. The International
Olympic Committee will render
its decision of those five sports
in August 2016.
But it’s always good to
dream. Just dust ourselves off
and bust down that door next
time.
##################
Finally this week, a bittersweet thought on the passing of
an American sporting institution, Yogi Berra.
Like many name athletes
in the early 1960’s, he owned
a bowling center. Along with
fellow Yankee Hall of Famer
Phil Rizzuto, they owned
Rizzuto-Berra Lanes, known
later as Astro Bowl in Clifton,
New Jersey. It closed in 1999
when the land was sold to a
developer.
The center may have gotten
a sweetheart deal when Berra
did an ad for a new device
known as AMF MagicScore.
For this week’s JPA Lost
Classic, we head back to 1977
as Yogi pitches the brand new
computer system Oddly, I
found myself waiting for a
classic Yogi phrase, but sadly, it
wasn’t there.

James was born in Dallas
to parents James and Margaret
Hostler. As a lifelong resident
of Dallas, James graduated
from Adamson High School
in 1945. He served in the U.S.
Navy from 1945 through 1946.
James married Betty Sims in
1951 and shared 64 wonderful
years together traveling, raising
their two daughters and enjoying every sport and activity
their four grandchildren were
involved in.
James became very active in
the American Junior Bowling
Congress in 1961. He served on
all committees and offices of
the American Junior Bowling
Congress for over 20 years
including 9 years as President.
He was a dedicated junior
bowling coach and received
many awards for his service
including the “Meritorious
Service Award” from the Dallas
Junior Bowling Association in

something you would never see
now.
But there was a catch. We
were cleared to sit in the Pirate
dugout, but not the visitors unless the opposing manager said
so. That was New York Mets
manager Yogi Berra, whom
we had heard upon our arrival
didn’t allow such things too
often. About an hour before
the first pitch, Berra granted
permission only if we were to
sit at the far end of the dugout,
with the trainer and pitchers
not in the bullpen.
Losing the coin flip to see
where I would begin my night,
I sat in the Met dugout the first
five innings, then the Pirate
dugout for the rest of the game.
Got quizzed about where I
lived, telling the trainer it was
in the town next to Beaver
Falls, home to another pretty
well known athlete at the time,
Joe Namath.
Then after a jacketed pitcher
said, “Hey, Pee Wee, move
down a little,” I knew it wasn’t
starting pitcher Jerry Koosman,
or the previous night’s starter
Jon Matlack. I looked up and
saw it was Tom Seaver. He had
just won his second Cy Young
Award and would win a third
the next year, taking a big step
to Cooperstown. But being eleven years of age, you don’t think
about stuff like taking a pen
or grabbing a spare ball to ask
for an autograph. Nonetheless,
a young boy had the night of
his young life, with permission
granted by Mr. Lawrence Peter
Berra. Rest In Peace, Yogi.
1982.
James was also active in the
Dallas Bowling Association. He
served on all committees and
offices and was the President of
the Dallas Bowling Association
from 1972 through 1973.
In 2006 James was elected
Vice President of the Southern
Bowling Congress which
oversaw sanctioned events in
9 Southern states. James was
elected President of the Southern Bowling Congress and
held that position from 2008
through 2009.
James received his highest
honor in 2012 when he was
inducted into the Southern
Bowling Congress Hall of Fame
at a ceremony just for him
in Fort Smith, Arkansas. His
entire family made the trip to
watch him receive this honor
from his “bowling family” of
many years.
His grandson told him from
now on he should sign his
name “James Hostler, HOF”.
After retiring from a career
with Storbeck & Gregory as
a metal lathe and plasterer,
James realized he was a natural golfer and enjoyed playing
regularly with his buddies.
They would play during the
week when they could get the
“senior discount”. He even
made a hole in one at Texoma
Golf Club.
James was also very artistic
and enjoyed making concrete
sculptures, stepping stones and
walkways at his home.
James and Betty loved traveling together and enjoying the
beautiful scenery in Colorado,
Banff and Hawaii, as well as
taking cruises to Alaska, the
Panama Canal, New England
James Hostler - “Hoss”
and Europe. They also enjoyed
many adventurous trips to
Mexico and Colorado with their
children and grandchildren to
snorkel and snow ski.
James is preceded in death
by his parents, James and
Margaret Hostler of Dallas and
his sister, Donella McHugh of
Corpus Christi. He is survived
by his wife, Betty, daughters
Kathy Anderson and husband
Sam of Murphy, Judy Hostler
and fiance Mike Walker of Plano, grandchildren Katie Parks
and husband Nick of Nashville,
Greg Anderson and wife Amy
of Houston, Stacey Shropshire
and fiance Ryan Andrews of
Ft. Worth, Bradley Anderson of
San Marcos, and sister Nancy
Senter and husband Charles of
Dallas. A memorial service to
celebrate his life was held at St.
Barnabas Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations
