EVIL.indd 8 9/29/2014 8:09:22 PM A Note From The Executive & Artistic Director his season marks the next 40 years of he Warehouse heatre. By then I will have handed the baton to some young turk (I hope…It would be a strange Warehouse heatre if you have me at the helm at 85!) It is now that we build he Warehouse heatre’s future, it is now that we build the support, programming and inancial security for the audiences and artists who will come over the next 40 years. How are we going to do that? he Board and I have brought together a superlative staf that is dedicated to he Warehouse, the art form, the community and to you. Get to know them (we’ll all try to wear our name tags) and I know you will be impressed. he board, staf, and I have created a business model that can redeine the small market regional producing theatre. A model built on the excellence of professional and gutsy artistry; a ground-breaking conservatory program that bridges the gap between educational and professional theatre by developing recent BA theatre graduates into professional and entrepreneurial theatre artists; a Southeastern regional touring program recognized nationally for excellence; and a thriving summer festival. It’s missing only one thing…you. For the next 40 years of he Warehouse heatre to be as successful and transformative as I know it can be…I need to engage you. here are so many ways for you to help and to be a part of our future. If I don’t reach out to you personally soon enough, please reach out to me. I’d like to give you a real opportunity to make a diference…and everyone can make a diference. Every theatre, regardless the size of its budget, is a community theatre. hat’s how it started, 40 years ago as well as 2000 years ago. We love this community and are dedicated to making it as wonderful a place as we possibly can and think our role as a cultural institution can do real and great things. You are our community – let’s talk. Bravo! EVIL.indd 17 9/29/2014 8:09:23 PM An Interview With George Reinblatt Our resident dramaturg, Elisa M. Golden, recently conducted an e-mail interview with the playwright/composer of Evil Dead: he Musical, George Reinblatt. he following is their exchange: EMG: Did you ever consider adding a sing-along crawl with a bouncing blood drop when the songs start? GR: No, I’ll leave the singing to the pros. EMG: If you had your pick of any ive living guests to sit in the “splatter zone” seats at an Evil Dead performance who would they be and why? GR: Sitting in the splatter zone is an honor. I don’t know who in South Carolina is worthy of this privilege – but if you’re sitting there – DUCK!!!!! EMG: I believe you’re one of a handful of people who have rhymed “sex” with “Chex.” Which poets have inluenced you the most? GR: he only poets who inluence me are the ones who put the names of cereal brands into their poems… so, Maya Angelou, I guess. EMG: In Act One, Cheryl is reading the book If Chins Could Kill. I looked it up and found it is by Bruce Campbell, the actor best known for his starring role as Ash in the Evil Dead trilogy. Did he ask you to plug his book in your musical? GR: No, we did it is as a salute to Bruce. People who come to see this show idolize Bruce… so we wanted to give him a little shout out. EMG: Which Evil Dead character to you identify with most, and why? GR: Considering that pretty much every character turns into a demon, it is hard to relate to any of them from true life experiences. But originally when I wrote Ed, he didn’t speak at all, As a Theatrical Systems Integrator; we specialize in the design, installation and maitenance of theaterical equipment for performance spaces of all kinds. Of course, I then realized this show would be a lot better with actual trained actors. And it would also be better if Ed sang. So that idea didn’t last long. EMG: I read where you created this musical in part because of a fascination with Spiderman movies. You also mention it in the script (Annie watches the in-light movie of Spiderman). What is your fascination with this comic strip character? GR: he reason I mention Spiderman in the show is because Sam Raimi directed the Evil Dead ilms then went on to Hollywood superstardom directing the original Spiderman trilogy. So we had some fun with that. EMG: here are a number of puns in Evil Dead: he Musical. I especially enjoyed the Scott puns. Growing up, did you watch a lot of the old standup comedians like Shecky Greene, Norm Crosby and Jackie Mason? GR: he puns are more of a salute to horror movies which are famous for their horrible puns. hey’re awful on purpose. EMG: Did you ever go out for Halloween dressed as a Candarian Demon? GR: No, but my favorite Evil Dead costume I’ve ever seen was when someone showed up dressed as the bridge. EMG: With name dropping like Busta Rhymes and all the terms in the song, “Old Reliable Jake,” do you think some of it goes over the heads of certain audience members? GR: Who doesn’t know who Busta Rhymes is? “Woo-Hah” is an all-time classic. EMG: Do you plan to write a sequel to this musical---one possibly about the famed Medieval King Ash??? GR: his show already combines all elements of Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness, so I don’t see a sequel in our future. EMG: What do you have hidden under your loorboards? GR: You don’t want to know. Playwright Biography GEORGE REINBLATT (born 1977) is a comedy writer from Toronto, Canada, is best known for writing the of-Broadway show Evil Dead: he Musical.
