MEXICO-CANADA TRADE January - April 2011 COMERCIO MÉXICO-CANADÁ Enero - Abril 2011 Trade Among NAFTA Partners Comercio Entre los Países del TLCAN Region of North America Región de Norte América • By April 2011, trade at the NAFTA region recorded a value of USD$323.2 billion, which is equivalent to a growth of 15.8% in comparison to the same period last year. • Al mes de abril de 2011, el comercio total de la región TLCAN registró un valor de US$323,277 mdd (millones de dólares estadounidenses), lo que representa un crecimiento de 15.8% respecto al mismo período del año anterior. • With this increase in regional trade, the level of trade flows exceeded by 1.9% the levels recorded before the recession (USD$317.7 billion in 2008). Between 2009 and 2011, TLCAN trade grew 52.2%, making it possible for pre-recession levels to recover in only 2 years. • As for bilateral trade between Mexico and Canada, flows grew 16.3% in comparison to last year, resulting in USD$10.8 billion. This value represents a trade increase of over 820% during the NAFTA era, which can also be read as an average annual growth rate of 13.1% between 1993 and 2011. • Regarding the bilateral trade between Mexico and the United States the goods exchange increased 18.7%, amounting USD$138.1 billion. Mexico – Canada Trade Balance: • Mexico keeps a trade surplus with Canada of USD$5 billion, value USD$1.2 billion higher than the number registered in 2010. • Mexico ranked as Canada’s 3rd largest trade partner in the world, covering 3.8% of the Canadian market, with United States being in the first position with 62.3% and China in second, with 6.2%. • Among the main trade partners of Canada, Mexico is in 2nd place regarding trade growth (16.3%), only after China (23.4%), and followed by Germany (16.1%), the United States (13.5%) and Japan (10.8%) 1 The information contained in this report was developed using importer’s numbers shown in official sources such as BANXICO, Statistics Canada and USDOC (in the section of trade by province, only data from Statistics Canada was used). El comercio TLCAN entre 2009 y 2011 crecío 52.2%, permitiendo recuperar los niveles anteriores a la recesión en tan solo 2 años. • En relación al comercio bilateral México – Canadá, los flujos crecieron 16.3% comparado con el año anterior, ubicándose en US$10,815 mdd. Este valor representa un crecimiento del comercio de más de 820% durante la era del TLCAN, lo que además se traduce en una tasa de crecimiento anual promedio de 13.1% entre 1993 y 2011. • En relación al comercio bilateral México-EE.UU., el intercambio de bienes creció 18.7%, registrando un valor de $138,158 mdd. Balanza Comercial México - Canadá • México mantiene superávit comercial con Canadá por US$5,065 mdd, monto US$1,220 mdd superior al registro de 2010. • A nivel mundial, México se ubicó como el tercer socio comercial de Canadá con el 3.8% del mercado canadiense, por debajo de EE.UU. (62.3%) y China (6.2%). • Entre los principales socios comerciales de Canadá, México ocupó el segundo lugar en crecimiento del comercio (16.3%) antecedido por China (23.4%) y seguido por Alemania (16.1%), EE.UU. WWW.NAFTA–MEXICO.ORG 1 Exports from Canada to Mexico Exportaciones de Canadá a México • In April 2011, Mexico was ranked the 5th largest export market for Canadian products (2.1% from total), only after United States, United Kingdom, China and Japan. • En abril de 2011, México se ubicó como quinto mercado de exportación para los productos canadienses (2.1% del total), por debajo de EE.UU, Reino Unido, China y Japón. • In terms of value, exports from Canada to Mexico reached USD$2.8 billion, amount 771% higher than sales recorded in 1993. In spite of this strong recovery in 2011, the value of the Mexican market for Canadian products is still below the levels recorded before the crisis (USD$3 billion in 2008). • En términos de valor, las exportaciones de Canadá a México se ubicaron en US$2,875 mdd, monto 771% superior al monto registrado en 1993. A pesar de esta fuerte recuperación en 2011, el valor del mercado mexicano para los productos canadienses se encuentra aún por debajo de los niveles previos a la crisis (US$3,093 mdd en 2008). • The average annual growth rate of exports from Canada into Mexico between 1993 and 2011 is 12.8%. • La tasa de crecimiento anual promedio de las exportaciones de Canadá a México entre 1993 y 2011 se ubica en 12.8%. Exports from Mexico to Canada Exportaciones de México a Canadá • By April 2011, Mexico kept its position as the 3rd largest supplier for the Canadian market (5.4%). This participation is only exceeded by imports from the United States and China. • Durante abril de 2011, México mantuvo su posición como tercer proveedor de Canadá (5.4%), participación superada por las importaciones provenientes de EE.UU. y China. • April exports of Mexican products to Canada amounted USD$7.9 billion, which is more than 8 times the sales of 1993 (USD$845 million). The average annual growth rate of exports from Mexico to Canada was 13.3%. • Las exportaciones de productos mexicanos a Canadá en marzo sumaron US$7,940 mdd, monto más de 8 veces superior respecto a 1993 (US$845mdd). Main products Principales productos • Amid the main Mexican products imported to Canada, the goods that showed a greater increase in April 2011 were: automobiles with engines between 1501 and 3000 cc's, cell-phones, computers, ignition cables for automobiles, aircrafts and gold. • Los bienes de exportación de México con mayor crecimiento a abril de 2011 fueron: automóviles con motor de entre 1501 y 3000 centímetros cúbicos, celulares, computadoras, cables de encendido para automóviles y aeronaves y oro. WWW.NAFTA–MEXICO.ORG 2 Investment from Canada in Mexico Inversión de Canadá en México During the last seventeen years, Canadian foreign direct investment (FDI) has been a key factor for the integration of our productive sectors: Durante los últimos diecisiete años la inversión extranjera directa (IED) de Canadá ha sido un elemento clave para la integración de los sectores productivos de ambos países: From January 2000 to March 2011, Canada’s cumulative FDI in Mexico reached $9.9 billion USD, becoming the fourth largest foreign investor in Mexico. According to the Ministry of Economy, on December 2010, 2,636 firms were registered in Mexico as having Canadian capital. These results demonstrate the high confidence that the NAFTA’s legal framework has granted to Canadian investors to operate in Mexico.
