NEWSLETTER OF THE NORTHWEST CHAPTER Of The National Corvette Restorer’s Society March– April 2009 Chairman's Message by Mike Benner G reetings, The New Year brings the Puyallup Swap Meet, this was the first NW Chapter activity for 2009. The swap meet was well attended and most of the vendors reported healthy sales activity exceeding last years level. Sunny Arizona was the location of 5 specialty car auctions the second week of January. Barrett Jackson hammered the majority of the Corvette sales at 138. The Corvettes brought good money but not the crazy money spent in 2006. I am not sure what motivates these buyers. It must be the combination of national television, glitz and glamour of an auction and out bidding another affluent person. All in all I don’t think the car auctions set the market on Corvette pricing. The auctions do however promote unreal expectations in the eyes of prospective non-auction Corvette sellers. The 2009 Board of Directors scheduled a great host of activities for this year. The chapter will focus on new growth areas such as Bend, Boise and Central Washington. We will continue refining the website. Plus, plan to provide a venue of events that focus on the education for NCRS judges. All in all mid 2009 is looking a little brighter in the economic scene and the Corvette in your garage is holding up better than your 401K. 2009 Events Schedule Mar 28 June 28 Jul 12-16 Aug 21-23 Sep 28 Oct 3 TBA Chapter Meet Yakima, WA Judging School Olympia, WA National Convention San Jose, CA Super Chapter Meet Leavenworth, WA Terminator Party Sherwood, OR Judging School Wilsonville, OR Holiday Party To be announced (TBA) 1 Region VIII Directors Message by Arland Dower T his notice is for those who have expressed an interest, or may be interested, in joining a group of NCRS members from the Northwest who are driving to the 2009 National Convention in San Jose, California. Thank you. -Editor 2 (Continued from page 2) want. If you can’t make the initial schedule, you can just meet up with us in Redding for dinner or anytime Saturday night and we can head into San Jose on Sunday morning. If you have any questions call us at (360) 896-5334 or email akadower@comcast. net - Arland Olympia (actually in Tumwater). This will be a mini-meet/judging school, and our tentative plan at this point is to judge two similar early C-3’s. As we’ve done at the past mini-meet/judging schools, newer judges will be teamed up with Master Judge instructors. This process seems to be good way for newer judges to get actual judging experience in a less threatening way than at a full blown judging event, such as a Regional or a National. From The Judging Chairman by Wayne Loron T he March 28th Chapter Judging Meet in Yakima is shaping up to be another great event! We have three C-1’s, two C-2’s, and a C-3 registered for Judging. We still need some judges (any level) to help get the job done, so if you can, please plan to attend. The registration form is included in this issue, in the Driveline, and on our Chapter website at www. nwncrs.org. We hope to see you there! Our joint Chapter Judging event with the British Columbia Chapter will be in Leavenworth, WA at the Enzian Inn on August 21-23, 2009. We are still planning the details, but we are planning to have registration and a classroom judging school on Friday, then Flight Judging on Saturday. The registration form for this event is also included in this issue, in the next Driveline, and on our Chapter website at www.nwncrs.org. As at all Chapter Meets, we reserve the right to limit the number of cars judged. Preference will go to Corvettes that have not been judged before, and in order of date registration was received. We had a great time in Leavenworth for the Regional in 2007, and this event should be a good one also! WANTED Judges for the March 28th Judging Meet! Our last judging event for 2009 will be another mini-meet/judging school on October 3 at Dean Sprecher’s business (Corvette Specialties) in Wilsonville, OR. Again, this will be a “hands-on” training session for newer judges. One or two Corvettes will be judged with the support of Master Judge instructors. Please let me know if you would like to have your Corvette judged in a learning environment. More details will be published later. On Sunday, June 28 a judging event will be held at Larry Johnson’s Corvette & Hi Performance in 3 Northwest Chapter NCRS Board Meeting Minutes by Connie Falk– Secretary Board of Directors Meeting February 7, 2009 The meeting was called to order at 3:08 PM by Chairman Mike Benner. In attendance were Mike and Suzanne Benner, Bernie Schneider, Eric and Connie Falk, Mike Doty, Bob Johansen, Bert Lukens, Wayne Loron, Arland and Kay Dower, and Larry Richter. Minutes from previous meeting were motioned for approval by Bernie Schneider, 2nd by Eric Falk, motion passed, minutes were approved as written. Treasurer Report by Larry Richter, interest earned on existing accounts all other accounts remain unchanged. Judging Chairman Report by Wayne Loron: Yakima meet has 6 cars being judged, and only 6 judges. Wayne is hoping for 4 more judges. Membership Report by Suzanne Benner: Currently we have 115 member renewed. Suzanne also announced that she is resigning her position as Membership Chairman; she said Tammy Shirley was interested in the position. Mike Benner appointed Tammy Shirley to fulfill the remainder of Suzanne’s term. Suzanne will relinquish her duties to Tammy and will assist her with the transition. New Business: Mike Benner started a discussion on whether or not the Webmaster should stay as an advisory position or make it a separate board position. It came to a vote that it be a separate board position. Vote by the Chapter would take place at the Chapter meeting later the same evening. Mike Benner said there was a request by the National to participate in the Pinewood Derby Race by building and sponsoring a car. Mike Doty said he was planning to attend the National Convention so he was willing to build and race the car on behalf of the Chapter. Update on Leavenworth Super chapter Meet: Friday August 7 & 8. Friday afternoon there will be a judging school for about 2-3 hours. Saturday will be the judging on the cars. The awards banquet is yet to be determined. Mike Benner is going to check on being able to host the awards banquet at the breakfast; he will confirm at a later date. There are 40 rooms on hold at the Enzian Inn. 2009 Chapter Charity Donation: There was discussion on donating to a charity for 2009. There were many items and concerns. Any ideas for a charity event should be emailed to Mike Benner. No final decision was made. Website Update: Eric is still working on the site and wants to be sure everyone is comfortable with going from one site to another through ours before turning it over to a permanent Webmaster. Comments were made about the website being much more user friendly. There was discussion on a Marketplace being available for members to have their own link to list items for sale. The issue is open to suggestions, nothing final. There was also discussion on passwords and who should have access to them, as in the past where only one person was in charge of all. Eric recommended NO one person should have all the information, instead he suggested at least 3 people on the board share the responsibility. Eric will compile the information and a plan and submit it to the BOD. Boise Area: Stan Clements is ready to host a car event in late spring; Burt Lukens is willing to help with the event. It was brought up, whether or not Boise could become its own chapter, and it apparently didn’t work in the past. With continued support from us and the Boise area it’s possible they will be able to become their own chapter. Larry suggested that there be a reimbursement from the chapter for members that are going to travel that far in order to help with different events. No further decision was made! Unfinished business: 2009 Holiday Event: Mike Benner mentioned having two holiday events this year; one up north to accommodate the Washington members and one further south to accommodate the Oregon area members. It wasn’t decided whether to have one or two locations. A discussion was brought up to change the venue from The Rutherglen Mansion, which served as the location for the past two years. Two places under consideration are the Monticello Hotel in Longview, WA. and The Oak Tree restaurant in Woodland, WA. Bernie Schneider will gather more information on both locations and report his findings to the Board. Advertising sponsorship for 2009, Mike has approached Pacific Corvette, Russ Chevrolet, Les Schwab Tire Centers and Corvette Specialties with proposals for 2009 There will be a designated spot for the paid sponsors in the Front Bumper and the website. Next meeting June 28th, at Larry Johnson’s in Olympia.. Meeting Adjourned at 4:11PM. 4 1954 CORVETTE ROADST ROADSTER ER I n the last issue Bob and Valerie Johansen’s 1954 Corvette Roadster, serial #2975, graced the cover. Bob has been a member of the Northwest Chapter since 1982 and his NCRS number is under 6,000. He bought the car in September 1994 from a gentleman who purchased it 27 years earlier with the intentions of restoring it. The prior owner got as far as putting it in a warehouse and taking off a few of the parts before giving up. To his credit he purchased numerous NOS parts and stored them for later use. When Bob got the car, the original Polo White paint had been repainted Sportsman Red. It was in rough condition but it was all there and had many NOS parts too. In 2002 Bob completed a body off restoration; returning it to its original color. The car has the original 235 CI 155 HP Blue Flame six cylinder engine with three side draft Carter carburetors, and a Powerglide transmission. The same year the restoration was completed the car was awarded a Top Flight in Welches, OR and another Top Flight in Monterey, CA. A Performance Verification award was bestowed on the car the following year. In 2004 the car received the prestigious Duntov Award at the National in Windsor, Ontario Canada. The car was displayed at the 2008 Northwest Regional Event in Bend, OR; that is where I took the photographs. Bob said the car traveled thousands of miles in a trailer, but has few road miles since the completion of the restoration. He said it is a neat piece of history that was a lot of fun to work on; with a few exceptions. I have to agree that it’s a piece of history; one I’m glad ended up in the hands of a true Corvette enthusiast. Bob, thanks for restoring the car and sharing it with the rest of us. -Editor Northwest Chapter Jackets The Mens standard jacket, style # J730, is a black lightweight microfiber. Mike and I really appreciated your support. The event allowed us the opportunity to talk with a lot of Corvette owners about the NCRS and our hobby. “At the judging meet in Yakima I will pass the torch to Tammy Shirley.” My personal schedule has grown to the point that I no longer have the extra time needed to handle the tasks as the Membership Chairperson. Therefore, I have decided to resign my position. I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as your Membership Chairperson the last 4 years. I enjoyed getting to know many of you on a personal basis. I plan to finish publishing the 2009 Membership Directory this month. At the judging meet in Yakima I will pass the torch to Tammy Shirley. Tammy was appointed by our Chapter Chairman to finish the remainder of my term. I will still assist Mike in his position as Chairman. Evidence of an unknown visitor was discovered on this Corvette during the 2008 Northwest Regional Meet in Bend, OR. Did it appear before or after the judging? Michael Pierce would know. Thank you! Membership Chairwoman’s Report by Suzanne Benner I would like to welcome the following new members to the NW Chapter. Wally and LeAnne Kropf from Bend; friends of the Lukens. They had one of their cars judged at our Bend Regional last September. Bernie and Norie Heilman are from Yakima and will be attending the event at Mike and Tammy’s in March. Keith & Charlene Finnelly attended the Puyallup Swap Meet and are from Maple Valley Washington. We welcome all of you to the NW Chapter. T he Chapter Dinner and Meeting at the Puyallup swap meet February 7 brought 37 members and guests. The menu featured prime rib and salmon. The highlight of the evening was the most unusual true Corvette story told by a member. Four members took turns at the microphone. John with a story about a 54, Fran Harder had their history involving a 61, Wally presented a story involving a tractor and a 65 and Don Fast told a saga regarding a speed bump and a Policeman.
