It’s TIME2CABO. 3 Los Cabos CVB TIME2EXPLORE 4 www.TIME2CABO.com Lo s Ca b o s ’ To p 1 0 The 10 can’t-miss activities in Cabo Los Cabos truly has something for each type of visitor. From beaches to activities, shopping to relaxation, here’s a checklist of “musts” so you can enjoy all that Los Cabos has to offer. By Sarah Muñoz 1. FIND YOUR FAVORITE BEACH. Whether you’re seeking a secluded spot for a romantic escapade or a snorkeling piece of shoreline that’s also great for the kids, Los Cabos and its surroundings offer a multitude of beautiful beaches. Those low-key roads veering off onto the sea often hide a bonanza of prime waterfront. for a tour that takes them just inches away from these gentle mammals, or even spot them from beaches or a strategically built bar overlooking the ocean. You may also spot seals sunning themselves on the rocks around El Arco and loudly complaining about the presence of kayakers nearby. 2. NURTURE YOUR INNER ARTIST. You’d be wise to take your camera, pencil or even pastels every time you leave your hotel room, as Los Cabos’ natural beauty and man-made élan provide ample options for a lifetime of memories. Whether it’s the orange traces in the sky as the sun goes down or fishermen coming back from a day at sea, Baja’s beauty is meant to be captured in some way or another. 5. GO ON A ROAD TRIP. Don’t neglect Los Cabos’ earthly treasures just because there’s so much to discover at sea. A drive around Baja is an adventure in itself. Having your own wheels will give you access to miles of regal cacti, a forgotten fish taco stand with ice-cold beer and other unexpected surprises. 3. VACATION LIKE A CELEBRITY. Indulge in a day’s worth of luxurious spa pampering, whip out your sunglasses and stroll about like the Hollywood stars. Don’t be too surprised if you spot a famous singer or actor (or even some paparazzi) “hiding out” beside you, enjoying the warm days and lively nights of Los Cabos. Even decades after the likes of John Wayne headed here for a little R and R, the glitterati still love this spot of sassy sophistication. 4. BECOME ONE WITH NATURE. From December to March, Baja California Sur welcomes a flurry of whales seeking warm waters in which to give birth. Visitors may arrange 6. HEAD EAST. To the East Cape, that is. This relatively undeveloped area is a favorite spot for surfers looking to get away from the crowds and those who love to fish. With more rustic surroundings and camping sites than its more sophisticated neighbor, the East Cape is a dream come true for nature types, including divers who want to reach the Cabo Pulmo natural reef system. 7. GO FISH. Even if you don’t consider yourself the fishing type, you must try your luck here. Many hotels and outfitters offer fishing packages and assorted options for fun days at sea. If you’d rather run with the big boys, sign up for one of several championship tournaments. 8. TEE OFF. As one of the world’s most famous golf destinations, Los Cabos glitters with amazing greens. Championship courses have been carved out of an arid landscape that often looks out into the blue beyond. Everyone from Tom Fazio to Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Greg Norman has helped design and build what are now some of the area’s most appealing attractions. 9. COME HUNGRY. Leave your diet behind and get ready to savor some of the best seafood and Mexican delicacies in the entire peninsula. From toe-tingling Pacific tuna to shrimp tacos with a spicy kick, Los Cabos’ range of culinary options offers something for everyone. 10. TIME2CABO. You’re in Cabo! Leave your cares behind and embrace the beauty and activity around you. Esperanza–An Auberge Resort; Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort; Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort; Secrets Marquis Los Cabos and One&Only Palmilla were named among the Top 25 Foreign Golf Resorts. By Rick Stedman Most recently, two top Los Cabos golf courses received recognition within the following publications: The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol was voted No. 4 on Celebrated Living’s annual Reader’s Choice Platinum List of Top 20 International Golf Courses, and was included in Golf Magazine’s 2011 Top 100 Courses in the World; Diamante Cabo San Lucas was also named as one of Golf Magazine’s 2011 Top 100 Courses in the World. Names like Nicklaus, Fazio, Norman, Dye, Love, Couples and Mickelson strongly influence the golf landscape in Los Cabos. Over the next several years, a handful of golf courses are scheduled to open. Here’s a preview of what’s to come. 6 www.TIME2CABO.com Cabo Riviera Marina & Golf Resort, a scenic 18hole Pete Dye Signature Golf Course with the option to add an additional nine holes, features a unique waterfront community surrounded by an ecological landscape. Scheduled for completion in late 2012, the course is suitable for amateurs and professionals. Currently in development, Chileno Bay Golf & Ocean Club encompasses more than two miles of coastline for the creation of luxury home sites and two championship courses designed by Tom Fazio. Located four miles north of Cabo del Sol, this resort-style community will be one of the premier private clubs and will feature a private marina and yacht club. Also in the development phase is the luxurious Montage Los Cabos. In addition to opening a luxury new hotel where the former Twin Dolphins Hotel once stood along The Corridor, Montage Los Cabos has commissioned Fred Couples to design an 18-hole championship golf course. With a spectacular backdrop along one of Mexico’s most dramatic stretches of oceanfront property, the two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses at Quivira Los Cabos promise magnificent and memorable golf experiences. The first 18 holes of the course are expected to be completed in early 2012. The second phase of development is expected to be complete in the latter half of 2013. Set along massive sand dunes, rugged cliffs and white-sand beaches, the highly anticipated courses will be separated into two golf experiences: an 18-hole course open to resort guests and a private 18-hole course. Its 18 holes span more than 300 acres — carving their way through deep arroyos and resting atop cool, arid plateaus — at the top-ranked golf club in the peninsula. Certainly not a place for everyone, Querencia is a place to live a life (and play a game) of one’s own, encircled by stands of ancient cacti and palm trees, and pleasantly absent of the inconveniences of a crowded destination. Club Campestre San José Km. 119 Libramiento Aeropuerto SJC Local Phone: (624) 173-9400 MEX: (800) 543-2044 U.S.: (877) 795-8727 www.clubcampestresanjose.com Designer: Jack Nicklaus 6,966 yards / Par 71 / 18 holes Rating: 73.5 / Slope: 137 Resort Course / Semi-private / $$$$ Course highlights: One of Questro Golf’s showcase courses in the area, Club Campestre San José features spectacular views of the Sea of Cortés, incredible panoramic views, dramatic elevation changes and a plethora of undulating championship greens. Its original purpose was to help increase tourism. This course was created for very soft play with a partially flat design. But be careful, the fairways are not very wide and the external urban environment can make your play more interesting, and require more precise strokes. Puerto Los Cabos Paseo de los Pescadores, La Playita San José de Cabo Local Phone: (624) 105-6441 U.S.: 877-795-8727 www.puertoloscabos.com Designers: Jack Nicklaus – The Marina Course Greg Norman – The Mission Course 7,461 yards / Par 73 / 18 holes Rating: 75.9 / Slope: 145 Public and Private Club / $$$$ Course highlights: Puerto Los Cabos begins with the Shark and finishes with the Bear. Challenging and breathtaking, this course has it all and has been called by some as the best golf course in Mexico. A second course, the Oasis Course, will be designed by Phil Mickelson at a later date. Note: With the exception of Diamante Dunes Golf Club, courses are listed in order of location driving north on the Carretera Transpeninsular Highway from Cabo San Lucas to San José del Cabo. Since greens fees fluctuate depending on the time of year and the time of day, the scale used is a general guide. $ = less than US$50; $$ = less than US$100; $$$ = more than US$100; and $$$$ = more than US$200. 7 J. Kevin Foltz TIME2FISH 8 www.TIME2CABO.com Ex t ra o rd i n a r y Fi s h i n g What will you catch today? Jacques Cousteau nicknamed the Sea of Cortés The World’s Aquarium for its abundance of species. It boasts over 850 identified species and at least 80 local and migratory fish that are the focus of sportfishing. Cabo San Lucas is known as the Marlin Capital of the World, and deservedly so, as there are easily more marlin caught and released here than anywhere else on the planet. By Robin Wade A BOUNTY OF SEA LIFE Unlike other well-known fishing destinations where many days and many dollars can be fruitlessly spent chasing marlin, it is not unusual to find one or more on your very first trip. Peak months for striped marlin, which range in size from 100 to 180 pounds, include May, June, December and January. Blue marlin and black marlin frequent these waters from July to mid-November, with sizes ranging from 150 to 800 pounds. Many of the largest marlin ever caught off Los Cabos (those over 1,000 pounds) were caught in off-season months, so you never know when you’ll get that prized fish. Sailfish are huge throughout the area, ranging from 70 to 160 pounds. Swordfish can also be found, but prefer the colder water months of February and March, although there is always a chance for them year-round. Some of the largest yellowfin tuna in the world, ranging from 10 to 300-plus pounds, are here. Dorado, also known as mahimahi, are also numerous. These yellow and gold fish with shimmering green and blue spots range in size from 10 to 60 pounds and are considered a prime catch. Another favorite, wahoo, can reach up to 100 pounds and are one of the fastest fish in the ocean. The unusual-looking roosterfish is found close to the sandy beaches, but is very difficult to catch. Prized by the fly-fishing crowd, these odd fish range in size from 10 to over 100 pounds. In addition, the area has some excellent bottom-fishing opportunities: red snapper, jack crevalle, amberjack, sierra, cabrilla and yellowtail. And caught with less frequency are record-size snook, mako, blue and hammerhead sharks, as well as black sea bass. DECIDING ON THE BASICS Cabo’s large marina will help you decide what boat size is best for you and your wallet. Pangas, one of the most economical ways to fish, take up to three anglers for shorter trips of up to five hours. These trips concentrate on inshore fishing for smaller game fish. If landing the Big One has always been your dream, opt for the cruisers, which are in the 28- to 35-foot range and come with an experienced crew. Los Cabos also offers one of the world’s most complete selections of luxury sportfishers and yachts. If fishing was a last-minute decision, the best way to decide on a fleet is by talking with different fleet operators as you stroll around the marina, seeing what each has to offer. If you are planning a trip down, visit different fleet offices’ websites for more complete information on fishing techniques, tackle and amenities. And if conservation is important to you, make sure you check the fleet’s policy regarding catch and release. 2012 Fishing Tournaments • May 13–18: IGFA Offshore World Championship. www.igfaoffshorechampionship.com • June 28–July 1: Annual Stars & Stripes Fishing, Golf and Music Tournament. www.starsandstripestournament.com • July 24–28: 13th Annual East Cape Bisbee Tournament. www.bisbees.com • Oct. 16–20: 14th Annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament. www.loscabosbillfishtournament.com • Oct. 19–21: Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament. www.bisbees.com • Oct. 23–27: Bisbee’s International Black and Blue Marlin Tournament. www.bisbees.com A VARIETY OF FISHING AREAS Fishing in San José del Cabo has the advantage of a shorter boat ride to the famous Gordo Banks fishing grounds. Known for its fall and winter bite, fish opportunities include sailfish; black, blue and striped marlin; dorado; wahoo; yellowfin tuna; amberjack; pargo; grouper; skipjack; jack crevalle; sierra and others. Here 22- to 24-foot pangas and super pangas are the most popular. We recommend reserving a sportfishing charter boat in advance. On Baja’s East Cape is the secluded Bay of the Palms. This area is famous for huge blue marlin, hard-fighting black marlin and striped marlin. The East Cape is known as the Roosterfish Capital of the World and also offers yellowfin tuna. These waters have been fished by famous anglers, such as John Wayne and Bing Crosby, and have inspired writers, such as John Steinbeck and Ray Cannon, to write tales of their fishing adventures here. 9 Cabo Adventures TIME2DISCOVER 10 www.TIME2CABO.com Ou t d o o r Sp l e n d o r Los Cabos’ adventure-laden landscape When you feel that pang of fire inside that beckons adventure, heed the call and experience Los Cabos’ outdoor fun. Advanced dives of up to 130 feet are found five to eight miles offshore at El Gordo Banks, where majestic 15-foot-wide manta rays, docile loggerhead turtles and schooling hammerhead sharks swim around. Ultra advanced dives are located 28 miles out and feature the wreck of the El Vencedor. Motivated scuba divers can book a trip to Los Islotes at Isla Espíritu Santo, an area of two large rock islets that attracts schools of silver sardines, blue and gold king angelfish and yellow surgeonfish. Transcabo takes it to another level with a mini-submarine cruise/dive. Motor eight feet under the water’s surface in a spacious, climatecontrolled cabin and view sergeant majors, yellow seahorses and purple frogfish. SURFING AND KAYAKING For standard surfboarders, world-class surf breaks can be found at the East Cape; Playa Acapulquito, at Km. 28, which is a beginner’s reef break; Costa Azul’s Zippers at Km. 28 and 29 off of San José; and Playa Cabo Bello between Km. 5 and 6. By combining traditional healing with the most up-to-date techniques, the spas and wellness facilities here are among the best in the hemisphere, providing healthful, well-crafted cuisine with organic ingredients, meditative therapies, yoga by the sea and so much more. By Sarah Muñoz ABSOLUTE RENEWAL There is nothing ho-hum about a spa visit here — Los Cabos facilities have graduated into fully integrated wellness centers where the mind-body connection is a key component. Hacienda Encantada’s Holistic Spa, for instance, offers spiral meditation and a temazcal herbal steam chamber of pre-Hispanic origins. After a saltwater bath ritual at Casa Dorada’s Saltwater Spa, you might want to indulge in a Heaven on Earth Massage, with two therapists providing simultaneous upper- and lower-body pampering. At Capella Pedregal’s Auriga Spa, each experience begins with a floral footbath. Guests can enjoy water therapy and sound therapy sessions for enhanced relaxation, followed by a healthy spa-cuisine lunch with a tea or tonic. A Mexican folk therapist can also help guests choose treatments based on local traditions that will better aid their particular needs. The hotel’s fitness center also offers daily group fitness classes of yoga and Pilates, as well as personalized one-onone training. Spas in Los Cabos also seamlessly combine rejuvenation and relaxation. Besides an array of indulgent and body-healthy treatments, Armonia Spa at Pueblo Bonito Pacífica Resort & Spa offers beachside yoga and a meditation labyrinth to soothe the mind, as well as signature options such as Watsu, which combines elements of Shiatsu and yoga in the water. If you have a packed schedule, take advantage of Secrets Marquis Los Cabos’ new Mini Spa Indulgences menu, composed of five 25-minute treatments. Among the spa’s signature treatments: the Quetzalcoatl Oxygenating Experience, inspired by the Aztec water god, where you receive a eucalyptus foot bath as you enjoy an herbal tea, then an exfoliation of mineral salts followed by a derma-purification bath and culminated by being covered in a hydrating milk of cucumber. Native influences are also prevalent in the region’s spas. The indigenous Anuiti Collection at ME Cabo’s YHI Spa is not to be missed. A series of rituals focused on exfoliation, transformation, renewal, restoration and revitalization — all inspired by the landscape and culture of Los Cabos — provide a sumptuous restructuring of body and spirit. Among the options to consider: the Purifying Cochimie Wrap and the Anti-Aging Magic Facial. COSMETIC & MEDICAL OPTIONS Los Cabos has also become one of Mexico’s go-to places for health and medical care. Visitors will find excellent medical facilities and highly qualified, English-speaking physicians and med- ical personnel, with treatments and surgical options offered at a fraction of the price of that in the U.S. The wide array of dental, medical and cosmetic choices are complemented by many top-tier resorts in which to relax and recover. Natural experiences also form part of Los Cabos’ health-oriented offerings. In Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort, new Spa Pods combine water therapy, infrared heat and steam for a multi-sensory experience that naturally cleanses the body of unneeded toxins, increases one’s basal metabolic rate, relieves muscle aches and alleviates water retention. At Playa Grande Resort’s Thalassotherapy Spa, seawater and its nutrients are used to treat a number of skin conditions, joint injuries and back pain, among others. The SOMMA WineSPA at Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos Golf & Spa Resort has been a trendsetter with its wine- and grape-based therapies, which put the fruit’s antioxidants to great use — imagine a Chardonnay bubble bath, Merlot scrub or Champagne body mud wrap. Now it offers visitors a neuro-cutaneous facial repair service and a non-injected meso-sculpting treatment for those stubborn fatty areas. It’s easy to disconnect in paradise, but a spa experience that relaxes and heals makes it so much simpler! 17 One&Only Palmilla TIME2RELAX Si e s ta Ce n t ra l Accommodations continue to impress The Los Cabos hotel experience is unlike any other.
