WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2011 DECATUR, TEXAS 26 PAGES IN TWO SECTIONS PLUS INSERTS 75¢ WISE COUNTY Veterans remember an infamous day By DAVE ROGERS Messenger photos by Joe Duty ACT OF WAR — Carl Fickle of Runaway Bay was at a Fort Worth movie theater when he learned of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He visited the port as a hospital corpsman in World War II. Enjoying a Sunday afternoon away from Fort Worth’s Lena Pope Home orphanage, Carl Fickle was in line to buy a movie ticket at the White Theater on Berry Street when he got the news. Kenneth Huebner was riding to a movie in downtown Chicago in a car with two other teenagers when he heard. Seventy years have passed since the Japanese attack on the Ameri- can naval base at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously declared “a date which will live in infamy.” Yet many among us in Wise County — a group that includes more than 50 living World War II veterans such as Finkle and Huebner — can still vividly recall hearing the news that pushed the United States into the Second World War and sent millions of young Americans into combat in Europe and the Pacific. “They were showing a movie downtown, and you got in with canned goods,” recalls Huebner, 89, and a resident of Boyd for six decades. “My cousin and a friend and I; the three of us headed down there. But we never did make it to the theater. “We had the radio going in the car, and they mentioned Pearl Harbor. We didn’t know what it meant, but it sounded real serious. DEC. 7, 1941 — Kenneth Huebner of Boyd first heard of Pearl Harbor via car radio en route to a movie in Chicago. Less than a year later, he was stationed nearby. Most of the snow was melted by the afternoon as temperatures warmed into the upper 30s. Rain arrives, then snow, then cold By BRIAN KNOX Wise County residents woke up to a light blanket of snow Monday morning, but it caused few issues on the roadways. Temperatures remained at or above freezing during the snowfall and then warmed to the upper 30s by Monday afternoon, melting most of the white stuff that remained. Temperatures dipped into the upper 20s early Tuesday morning. Overnight temperatures Tuesday were expected to drop to the mid 20s. Two schools, Alvord and Chico, delayed the start of classes for two hours Monday. No major wrecks were reported. The snow followed a rainy weekend in Wise County. Rainfall totals included 3.7 inches in Greenwood, 2.63 in Rhome, 2.1 in Chico, 1.89 in Decatur, 1.25 in Alvord and 1.1 in Bridgeport. Rain early in the day Saturday caused organizers of Decatur’s Parade of Lights to postpone the event from Saturday night to 6:30 p.m. Thursday during the Decatur Main Street Christmas on the Square and Girls Night Out. Other Moonlight Madness activities continued as planned. The rain also caused Rhome to shorten its Holiday in the Park event last Saturday. Originally scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event was changed to 2 to 4 p.m. at City Hall. Despite the rain, organizers reported a strong turnout. Northlake police are still searching for a fourth suspect involved in an alleged armed robbery after tracking down three of them, with the aid of Wise County sheriff’s deputies, in Newark last week. Sonny D. Ruble, 32, of Rhome; Michael E. Crites, 39, of Azle; and Jackie G. Minshew, 59, of Newark; were all arrested for alleged armed robbery of a woman at a hotel room in Northlake. Minshew posted bail the next day. As of Tuesday afternoon, Ruble and Crites remained in Denton County CRITES Jail under a $20,000 bond. Investigators are not yet releasing the name of the fourth suspect, who might live in the Newark area. At approximately 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, four men entered room 329 at the Sleep Inn in MINSHEW Northlake, near the intersection of Texas 114 and Interstate 35W. They allegedly robbed 29-year-old Lesley A. Neumann at gunpoint. It appears all they stole was her purse and some clothing. They used a small, semiRUBLE automatic handgun. The victim actually knew the suspects and gave a description of the vehicle they were traveling in and where they might be headed. Wise County sheriff’s deputies tracked them down and apprehended three of the men near the intersection of Farm Roads 718 and 3433 just an hour after the incident. The men were turned over to Northlake police and transported to Denton County Jail. Sgt. Bobby Dowell with the Northlake Police Department said the victim was not harmed in the incident. WEATHER www.wcmessenger.com/weather 2A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, December 7, 2011 Wise County is WISE COUNTY Despite less riders, Toy Run deemed a success By ERIKA PEDROZA The rain and cold weather may have put a damper on the number of riders who made the trek from Decatur to Bridgeport in the 12th installment of the Wise County Toy Run Sunday. But it did not affect their generosity and outreach. “We will be able to help out as many people as we normally do,” said Wise County Toy Run participant Barry Bynum. “Probably of the 12 years that we’ve done this, this was the lowest turnout we’ve had. We usually run 800; this time we had about 80. “But we had people come out in their cars to join us at the Harwood Park pavilion in Bridgeport after the run. And we have enough money built up to do what we’ve always done to help people,” he said. The Toy Run, which begins at the Decatur Middle School field house and ends at Harwood Park in Bridgeport, is open to all motorcyclists for $10 or an unwrapped toy. At the conclusion of the run, a chili lunch is served, and there is an auction, Tshirt sales and a raffle. These activities paired with sponsorships by area businesses comprised a bulk of the funds for this year’s contributions. “It’s a community-wide effort; you can’t name one person,” Bynum said. “Thanks to the fine merchants of Wise County who make contributions, a lot of them every year. All I have to say is ‘It’s Toy Run time,’ and they’ll donate — items for the auction, meat and crackers for the chili, drinks — without question.” The funds raised not only provide families in need with shopping cards to the grocery store and Christmas gifts for the children, but also a scholarship for a senior at every school in the county. “People have a bad impression of bikers,” Bynum said. “But let me tell you, these bikers have the biggest heart. If you’ve ever stood beside the highway to see the 800-something cycles ride from Decatur to Bridgeport, you’ll see that. Until you come and witness what it is, it’s hard to appreciate all that this event means to all who participate. Ride for the kids — that’s what it’s all about.” Email Erika at epedroza@ wcmessenger.com. We turned around and went home.” American leaders had been reluctant to intervene after Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939 began World War II, but the expansionism of Germany and its allies could not be ignored after Japan’s surprise bombing left 2,388 Americans dead, another 1,178 wounded and 21 American ships sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor. “I’d never heard of Pearl Harbor, but we found out about it at the theater before we went in,” said Fickle, who lives in Runaway Bay. “We had a lot of faith in Roosevelt, and right away, he was on (the radio) with his famous speech, calling it a date which will live in infamy. I heard him make that (Dec. 8, 1941) speech live on our radio at the Home.” Congress voted to declare war on Japan Dec. 8, 1941, and four days later, declared war against Japanese allies Germany and Italy. Growing up in Park Springs, Decatur resident Carl Mowery didn’t have access to a radio. “We didn’t have a car, we didn’t have running water, we didn’t have electricity, we didn’t take a newspaper,” he said. “It was tough. We were still in the Depression. The way we found out about things was to hear things from somebody else. “But the patriotic spirit was so strong back then. It wasn’t like you were sitting back badmouthing Republicans or Democrats. Patriotism was paramount. I’d loved to have gone to the Philippines to drive an ambulance at 15.” Mowery first saw Fort Worth when he was 16 and tried to enlist in the Navy by lying about his age and telling him he was really 17. “They caught me,” he said, noting it was a year later when he succeeded in joining the Navy. He served in a bomb and mine disposal unit on Okinawa and also aboard a minesweeper. When the war was over, he received two letters of thanks, one from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, the other from President Harry Truman. Alvord resident Tal Morrison, 90, was attending the U.S. Naval Preparatory School in Long Beach when Pearl Harbor was attacked. The son of a Hollywood cinematographer was not surprised by the news. “When Hitler invaded the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia in September Local Sales Tax Supports YOUR City & County Services www.LookLocalWiseCounty.org Phil Major President & Publisher P.O. Huebner admitted that the Pearl Harbor attack caught him by surprise. “We were still trying to find out where Pearl Harbor was,” he recalled about the hours after hearing the news. “All we knew about the Japanese was they were the ones who made the cheap toys.” The Chicago native found himself at Pearl Harbor less than a year later in connection with his duties as a driver for high-ranking officers. “I got there in August 1942, and nothing had changed (from the immediate aftermath of the bombing),” Huebner said. “The ships were still like you see Wes Mowery, U.S. Navy Billy Narramore, U.S. Army Air Corps Wendell Osburn, U.S. Army Walter Pannell, U.S. Army Billy Paschall, U.S. Navy Bill Pedigo, U.S. Army Air Corps R.J. A lot of people were over there, cutting metal. We had to go in and out until we could find a place to dock the ship.” Huebner’s wartime in the Pacific was divided between working in communications, where he ferried messages back and forth to commanders, and as a driver, and he spent time both in Hawaii and on other Pacific bases. “I hauled pilots from the Ewa Field base to Honolulu,” he said. “Some of them received decorations and thank-yous. I’d take them by station wagon to dinner in Pearl City and to where the clipper ships (seaplanes) came in. They went home by clipper. “The harbor itself was really damaged, but as you moved out toward the city, the damage was cleaned up. Waikiki (Beach) was all under barbed wire,” he said. From August 1942 until January 1943, when Fickle passed through Pearl Harbor as a hospital corpsman on his way to Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands, little changed in the harbor. “You couldn’t go through the harbor for all the (damaged) ships that Mark Jordan Vice President/ General Manager Ken Roselle Senior Account Executive EDITORIAL WISE COUNTY Brian Knox Editor Veterans remember an infamous day ... Continued from page 1A OPEN FOR BUSINESS Kristen Tribe Assistant Editor were blocking the harbor,” Fickle said. “I was over there a year after the attack, and it still looked like a battleground. They kept us aboard ship.” The Runaway Bay resident set up field hospitals at Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam and Tinian. After Japan’s surrender, he worked in a naval hospital on Guam before being discharged from the Navy in January 1946. “We weren’t all in the soup all of the time. Our job really was to get that thing (hospital) set up and then they sent us out of there,” Fickle said. He worked on hospital ships ferrying wounded from field hospitals to base hospitals and made four trips to Okinawa “to haul patients back to the Marianas.” He also made several trips back and forth to Hawaii picking up supplies and spent time at Hickam Field, the Oahu air base that was also a key target on Dec. 7, 1941. In 1945, Fickle was on Tinian along with a soon-to-be-famous bomber, the Enola Gay. It dropped the first of two atomic bombs unleashed on Japan on Hiroshima Aug. 6. A second bomber called Blocks Car dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, Aug. 9. The Japanese surrendered Aug. 14, 1945. “The Enola Gay flew off from Tinian to drop bombs,” he said. “We weren’t far from the airstrip, and airmen were over with us all the time wanting us to fly with them to Japan (on regular bombing raids). They wanted to have a corpsman with them on their plane. “When they brought the (atomic) bomb on, we knew about it. Well, we didn’t know all the hubbub that was going on. We didn’t have communication then like we do now. You just heard things however you could get it,” Fickle explained. However Americans heard the news about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, it was the call to arms that defined the so-called “Greatest Generation” and did so much to shape this country. An attack on U.S. soil was not repeated during World War II. “The rest of the war didn’t have a lot to do with Pearl Harbor,” Fickle said, “but Pearl Harbor had a lot to do with the rest of the war.” Email Dave at drogers@wcmessenger.com. However, there are already several contested races. Incumbent Precinct 1 Constable Tom Bishop has filed for re-election as a Republican. He will be opposed by former Precinct 1 Constable Dennis Hudson, who has switched from a Democrat to a Republican. In Precinct 2, Jackie Johnson and Angela Denney have filed to run for constable as Republicans. Denney is the wife of current Precinct 2 Constable Leonard Denney. In Precinct 3, current Commissioner Harry Lamance has filed to run along with Glenn Hughes in the Republican primary. Lamance was elected as commissioner in 2010 in a special election to fill the remaining term of the late Mikel Richardson, who died in November of 2009. Hughes was named as interim commissioner after Richardson’s death and served in that role before Lamance took office. Several more candidates have filed but do not have an opponent as of yet. Republican Kevin Huffman has filed for re-election as Precinct 4 constable. Monte Shaw has filed for re-election as tax assessor collector. He is a Republican. James Popp has filed for Precinct 1 commissioner. Popp will run as a Republican in 2012. He lost to current Precinct 1 Commissioner Danny White in 2008 when he ran as a Democrat. White has also announced he will seek re-election but has not filed the paperwork with the county party chairman. Stephen Wren has filed for a place on the Republican ballot for county court-atlaw No. 2 judge. The position was created during the last Texas legislative session, and Wren was appointed to serve as judge. This will be the first chance for voters to make a selection in the race. Although she has not filed paperwork yet with the county party chairman, Marilyn Belew has announced she will also run for the county court-at-law No. 2 judge position as a Republican. Other Republican candidates who have either announced their intention to run for election or have filed paperwork appointing a campaign treasurer with the county elections office include Sheriff David Walker, Precinct 3 Constable Doug Parr and County Attorney James Stainton. An email sent to Wise County Democratic Chairman Mark York seeking information on Democratic filings did not draw a response by press time. At the state level, the redistricting battle has made things a bit interesting this year, as some plans would have a major effect on Wise County. District 30 State Sen. Craig Estes of Wichita Falls has filed for re-election and has drawn Jim Herblin of Prosper as an opponent in the Republican primary. District 61 State Rep. Phil King of Weatherford has also filed for re-election on the Republican ballot. While District 61 in the past has included Wise County, the court-ordered interim house plan places Wise County in District 68. If that plan stands, then Wise County would see the following names on the Republican ballot: Paul Braswell of Forestburg, Fred Skeen of Wichita Falls and Drew Springer of Muenster. The district is currently represented by Rick Hardcastle of Vernon, who is not seeking re-election. The filing period began Nov. 28 and continues until Dec. 15. Candidates file paperwork and a filing fee with their party chairman. Bridgeport Main Street Holiday Events on Halsell DECATUR New! Rick Perry’s shiny exterior. The campaign for Republican presidential candidate has taken a toll on the politician once known for his rugged good looks. In a matter of months, he’s traded his sharp cowboy boots for orthopedic shoes, and on occasion, I’ve even seen a hair out of place — a sure sign the end is near. Although I’m not a fan of Perry, his self-destruction came as a surprise. For better or worse, I thought the politician from Paint Creek could pull it off, but his recent gaffes are reminiscent of Howard Dean’s campaign-ending yowl in the 2004 Democratic primary. Rick is unraveling before our eyes, and as the campaign has crumbled, it has given me cause to reflect on my own “Perry experience.” From 1998 to 2007, Perry continually popped up along my path of writing and reporting. This is slightly unusual because I’m not a political reporter, I’ve never worked for an Austin-based publication, and we attended Texas A&M University in different decades. It started with my first job out of college. I landed a post at The Cattleman, a beef cattle magazine published by Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association in Fort Worth. TSCRA hosts a convention for its membership every spring, and government and industry leaders are invited to speak. I’ll admit I wasn’t particularly politically curious until post-college, so it was during this time frame that I first remember tuning in to Perry, even though he’d held state office since 1985. When I joined the magazine staff, Perry was lieutenant governor, and he became governor in 2000. I heard him speak at almost every major TSCRA event during that time until I left in 2001. Before I quit, I had memorized the opening to his speech. The speeches weren’t identical, but they were a variation of the same old schtick. “But I stand before you today, the son of tenant farmers and part of the first generation of my family to attend college,” he said. It was a poor attempt to relate to his ranching audience, some of which still operated under meager circumstances. Of course, some in the crowd lapped it up, but to me it came off as slick and insincere. I appreciate humble beginnings, but it loses meaning when it becomes nothing more than a turn of phrase. By 2002, I was back home in Wise County and had started a stint here at the Messenger. It was summertime, and then-editor Skip Nichols sent me to cover a Perry pit stop at the Decatur Public Library. He blew into town touting the TRIBE Trans Texas Corridor, a massive alternative to interstate travel, and a good size crowd showed up to “meet the governor.” Of course, I was already unimpressed but assumed my station, notebook in hand. The arrangement of the room was not clear, though, and instead of standing at the back of the crowd, where I prefer, I was at the front, next to Gov. Sexy Hair himself. In the post-speech interview, he noted my Aggie ring, like his, and attempted to discuss A&M instead of any real issues, declaring the interview over when the topic of education was mentioned. I fell into fits of laughter this week when I looked back at that story and read the following: “‘You want the best economic deContinued on page 5A Messenger photo by Joe Duty TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT — Reporter Kristen Tribe attempts to stifle a grimace while Gov. Rick Perry makes a point in his address at the Decatur Public Library in 2002. YOUR VIEWS Leaders lack moral foundation Mr. Kenneth McKay is indeed correct concerning the “wall of separation” not being mentioned in the U.S. Constitution, but then again, I think he knew it all along. The outline of the Constitution was designed by Thomas Jefferson, who used the expression when corresponding with the Danbury Baptists in 1802. Anyone familiar with “The Story of Stupidity” and Edward Gibbon should also recognize George Santayana. History is a great teacher, along with lessons from “The Supreme Architect of the Universe.” Mr. McKay’s assertion is correct in that a diverse society cannot escape religion. George Washington’s farewell address to the Continental Congress in 1796 expresses religion and morals as indispensable supports to political prosperity. Character, integrity and morals, which accompany religion, were deemed essential for the survival of our nation. Looking at our elected leaders in Washington today, is there any doubt why our government is failing? I would ask how the religion of government as it exists today is consistent with the ideology of America’s founders. Indeed, when government becomes worshipped as a religion, those liberties given by the Creator are in jeopardy. I love my country and the liberty it provides; however, I fear the “ineptocracy” which has become my government. Eddie Dunlap Decatur Hughes: Help clean occupied areas Well, Mr. Hughes, I am so glad that you are proud of your “occupy” groups. It doesn’t surprise me any that you would take their side over the police trying to restore order. Since you have such a great sense of pride for them, maybe you ought to go help some of the “occupied” areas clean up the “occupiers’” trash, feces and urine when they leave. Then those cities will be able to return those public areas back to the law abiding people of the non-whining, hardworking, taxpaying, God-fearing, true 99 percenters ... the American middle class. It would be a win-win for all if you did. Those cities would get much needed help, and Wise County would get a rest from your venom-spewing, hate-filled, radical, left wing whacko, warped sense of political rhetoric ... for a while at least. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, December 7, 2011 WISE COUNTY Wreath laying will honor veterans By ERIKA PEDROZA Twenty-three of the more than 400,000 wreaths to be placed simultaneously in 600 places across the nation Saturday will be set locally. For the fifth year, the Wise County Veterans Group has organized a local installment of the Wreaths Across America, beginning at 11 a.m. on Dec. 10, at the Veterans Park in Decatur. The event includes a keynote address by Wise County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Stephen Wren and the distribution of seven ceremonial wreaths representing each branch of the military (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines) and POW/MIA. Members of local Boy and Girl Scout troops will place a wreath at each of the 16 monuments in the park dedicated to various wars. “We commemorate the sacrifices of our veterans and honor those still serving our country, all while teaching kids the value of our freedom,” said veterans group member Drue Bruton of Decatur, who served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam. The tradition began more than 20 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Co. in Harrington, Maine, donated and placed wreaths on headstones at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. According to Bruton, the seven ceremonial wreaths placed at the Wise County Veterans Park have been donated. The remaining 16 have been paid for through donations of $15 for each wreath. Although all have been accounted for this year, any additional donations will be put toward next year’s campaign. “Only 1 percent of Americans are in the military service,” Bruton said. “One percent is carrying the war effort. They should be honored for preserving the value of our freedom, especially during the holidays, but also every day.” Email Erika at epedroza@ wcmessenger.com. 5A KAREN GARRETT EXCITED TO HELP YOU WITH A GREAT DEAL! 940-62 940-6 27-2177 jameswood.com BUICK CHEVY GMC HYUNDAI PRE-OWNED NEW NIGHT TIME BUFFET PIZZA HUT IN DECATUR 5 - 8 PM • SUNDAY - THURSDAY DAYTIME BUFFET 11 AM - 2 PM • SUNDAY - FRIDAY 601 S. Continued from page 1A are Era, Krum, Decatur and Forestburg. Janice Godlewski, a regional manager with the United States Postal Service (USPS), said at an earlier meeting that the Slidell post office didn’t bring in enough revenue to justify its continued operation, which is why it was under review for closure. She said it generated approximately $20,000 in revenue in 2010 and cost $78,000 to operate. The post office rents 130 P.O. boxes. “I know this is a small post office that doesn’t operate in the black, but most of them don’t,” Wilson said. A study released late October by the U.S. Postal Service recommended that the Greenwood and Slidell post offices be permanently closed. The study cited a decline in office workload and revenue for the recommendation. At the meeting last Thursday, comment forms were handed out. The forms must be turned in by Dec. 26. They are available at the Slidell and Greenwood post offices by request. The group also discussed a petition to file that includes a list of grievances should the USPS move forward with the closure. Customers have a 60-day window, through Dec. 26, to submit comments. On Dec. 26, another decision will be posted, and customers will have another 30 days to appeal the decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission. The commission must then render a decision within 120 days. After the final decision is made public, the post offices will remain open for at least 60 days before shutting down. Comments can be hand delivered to either post office. USPS has targeted 3,700 post offices across the nation for closing. Wilson hopes some kind of compromise can be made at least. “I understand if they have to close one, but at least keep one open,” she said of the Slidell and Greenwood offices. “Even if it is only open half days or only one day per week.” “This is not a good situation for anyone,” Wilson added, “not just for us but for the people who work for the post office.” Wilson and others have contacted several elected officials, including Congresswoman Kay Granger and U.S. senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn. The only one who has contacted her back personally about the issue was an aide for Kay Granger’s office. The meeting in Slidell came right before the post office announced some drastic changes over the weekend. USPS said they might eliminate next-day delivery service for stamped letters, and it plans to close 252 of its 487 mail processing centers. This would reduce OUR VIEWS Perry seems off his game ... Continued from page 4A velopment tool in America, you educate a child,’ Perry said. He admitted that there are problems with the school finance system that will have to be addressed in the next two to three years.” Evidently, those issues were not addressed as we were witness to its failure this year. Five years later, I found myself in Tyler at the Texas Rose Festival writing a feature about the elaborate event. The ceremonies include crowning a Rose Queen and naming her court, which is similar to the presentation of debutantes. As luck would have it, Perry’s daughter was on the court that year. I arrived early one morning before the parade to finish a few last-minute interviews, but everything stalled when I ran into none other — Gov. Perry — alongside one of the floats. As is his custom, he immediately noted my Aggie ring and blabbed his way through a few minutes of A&M chit chat before handing me his point-and-shoot camera and asking me to snap a photo of him and his daughter. All the while I was tempted to tell him I voted for Kinky Friedman in the previous election. In the end, I chalked it up to another random encounter with Rick, and I’ve learned to accept him at face value. I’m not convinced he’s capable of effectively running a government, but the man can style his hair. Despite my dislike for Perry and what he represents, I was convinced he would win — because he always does — and waltz into Washington guns blazing. But his path to the presidency has become riddled with potholes, each seemingly deeper than the last. It’s been suggested that his miscues and elementary mistakes are due to lingering back pain, which would also explain the shoes and slurred speech, if he’s on painkillers. Perry had spinal fusion surgery in July, and although his camp claims he’s operating at full speed, it’s obvious he’s off his game. He needs some more swing in his swagger to make up lost ground in this presidential race, but it seems that his spiral into oblivion will land him squarely back in the governor’s office, and not even a new hairspray will help. delivery standards at the USPS for the first time in 40 years. The undefeated 10-0 Lady Bulldogs moved up to No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Texas Girls Coaches Association polls Monday. Alvord was ranked No. 2 in both last week. The Lady Bulldogs’ coach Rob Schmucker downplayed the polls Monday. “They mean absolutely nothing,” he said. “We didn’t even play Friday, and we moved up to No. 1. Not to take anything away from the girls; they deserve it. But it’s not where you start. It’s where you finish.” Alvord tried to stay unbeaten Tuesday taking on Class 4A Springtown. The new top ranking is expected to paint an even bigger target on the Lady Bulldogs as they near the start of District 9-2A play Dec. 16. “That target was already there,” Schmucker said. “We know that anyone in this district can beat anyone. It’s a tough district.” Alvord will start district play against the No. 3 team in this week’s poll, Krum, who was 11-0 entering Tuesday. Krum won the Nazareth Tournament over the weekend. Schmucker also pointed out that 9-2A rival Nocona won the Era Tournament this weekend and that Ponder fell by two in the finals of the Jacksboro Tournament to Muenster, ranked No. 2 in Class A. Along with the tough district road awaiting the Lady Bulldogs, Schmucker also pointed out that the two-time state champions, Brock, are also in the region. Brock knocked Alvord out of the playoffs last year in the region quarterfinal. “Brock is still No. 1 until someone knocks them off,” Schmucker said. GIRLS BASKETBALL Lady Eagles win Lindsay tourney Led by 21 points and 10 rebounds from Joey Redwine, the Decatur Lady Eagles knocked off their District 7-3A rival Bridgeport Sissies 41-29 in the championship game of the Landmark Bank Invitational Saturday in Lindsay. Decatur (9-2) fought back from an 11-6 first-quarter deficit with a 17-8 run to build a 23-19 halftime lead. The Lady Eagles outscored Bridgeport (5-6) 18-10 in the second half. The Sissies managed just three points in the final frame. “Ball possessions and turnovers cost us,” said Bridgeport coach Dallas Taylor. “Our kids competed hard.” Lauren Hart led the Sissies with 13 points and four steals. For Decatur, Graham put in nine points. Handlon had two points, six boards, seven assists and three steals. The Lady Eagles topped Henrietta 46-22 in the semifinals of the tournament Friday. On Cloud Nine Brazile ropes record ninth all-around title Proctor of Grand Coulee, Wa., who has $137,774. The fact that Brazile competes in multiple events gives him a huge advantage every year in winning the allaround title. “Winning the steer roping championship helped a lot,” Brazile said, “but we didn’t have a good enough second half of the year (in tie-down and team roping).” And what about the possibility of winning a third triple-crown in five years? “You know, I haven’t really looked at that,” Brazile said. By BRANDON EVANS Decatur ropers are taking Las Vegas by storm in the National Finals Rodeo, which runs Dec. 1 through 10 at the Thomas and Mack Center. On the second night, Trevor Brazile and team roping partner Patrick Smith placed first in the event with a blazing 4.10. It solidified Brazile’s ninth all-around cowboy world title. “It’s off to a pretty good start in team roping,” Brazile said. “With no lead to protect, we’ve been able to be aggressive all week.” On the first night Brazile and Smith finished fifth with a 5.90. On the third night they finished seventh with 6.00. The fourth night Brazile and Smith stayed consistent and finished second with a solid 4.70. The pair finished seventh on Monday night with a time of 5.60. Brazile qualified for team roping and tie down in the NFR. A competitor must finish in the top 15 in world rankings to qualify for an NFR event. Brazile had already won the steer roping championship in Oklahoma last month. It’s helped him secure his ninth allaround cowboy world title. With total earnings already at $305,581, he’s uncatchable with five nights left. Second place is held by bull rider Shane Coopers at it again For the second year in a row, the three Cooper brothers from Decatur — Clint, Clif and Tuf — all qualified for a spot at the prestigious NFR in tie-down roping. “I’m really proud of all of them,” Brazile said. “All of them do a great job at representing the sport and giving it all they have.” Clint Cooper snagged second the first night in tie down with a 7.70. He finished behind the always consistent Cody Ohl of Hico, who clocked a 7.50. Tuf Cooper finished fifth with a 7.90, and middle brother Clif was ninth with 8.40. Brazile was 14th with an 18.80. EXTENSION AGENT One of the most common insects I find when making horticulture visits is the scale insect. One of the common scale insects that we find is the euonymous scale that attacks many species of indoor and outdoor plants. Many species of scale insects damage landscape plants, shrubs and trees. Scale insects insert their mouthparts into plant tissues and suck out the sap. When scale numbers are high, plant growth will be stunted, leaves will develop yellow blotches, branches will die and some or all of the leaves may fall off. Although scale insects are common, they are probably the most misidentified of all insect groups. Scale insects are generally small (1/4-inch long or less) and often mimic various plant parts such as bark or buds. Other species appear as small, white, waxy blotches or small bits of cotton on leaves or stems. The one attribute of scale insects that leads to the misidentification is that they appear to be nonliving. Once the young crawlers settle on a plant, they generally don’t move and can be overlooked. Depending on the species, scale insects can spend the winter as eggs, youth or adults. Because of their protective wax covering, most scale insects are very difficult to control with insecticides once they have settled. Scale insects are most vulnerable to spray formulations of contact insecticides during the crawlers stage. Many pesticides are available to consumers wanting to control scale. Pesticides work best on crawlers. For effective control, you may need to apply pesticides two to four times at five to sevenday intervals because most pesticides work for less than a week, but crawlers from a single generation can hatch over several weeks. Regardless of the number of applications needed, you must cover the plant thoroughly with insecticide each time. Cover both sides of the leaves and all the twigs and branches. Dormant oils should be ap- Ag News plied before spring growth begins, when temperatures are above 45 degrees for 24 to 48 hours. Apply summer sprays when temps are below 90 degrees for 24 to 48 hours. When scales are on plants that are actively growing, apply a systemic insecticide such as imidacloprid around the base of scale-infested plants. The following is a partial list of approved insecticides available for scale insect control: orthene, Azatin XL, Sevin, Di-Syston, Merit, Battle, horticultural oil, Olympic insecticidal soap and Distance. Read and follow instructions on the label. For a complete list of insecticides and more information on scale insects, call or come by the Extension office and ask for publication B-6097. Now is a good time to plant trees By NEIL SPERRY Dear Neil: I lost a Bradford pear this year. I’d like to replace it. How and when should I do that? Fall and early winter are great times to plant new trees. You’ll find good supplies in nurseries, and they’ll have half a year to get established before next summer. The pear will probably try to resprout from its roots. If at all possible, have someone grind or pull the stump out for you. Don’t feel like your new tree has to go in exactly the same location. Dear Neil: I lost much of my St. Augustine this past summer. I had no chinch bugs, at least not that I saw. The grass that is under my oak trees is doing well, but in the sunny areas, I see a lot of dead runners. I’m thinking about ripping it out and resodding. My lawn was 30 years old. Are the new St. Augustine varieties better than what would have been planted then? When should I resod? If samples of a few more bushes give negative results, I’m going to remove and replace them in the near future. Thanks. You’re welcome. I’m glad that you’re willing to make the change. As the due date approaches, those painless and frequent “Braxton Hicks contractions” that many women feel since mid-pregnancy may become rhythmic, frequent, and even painful. At this point, it helps to know that “false labor” contractions come at irregular intervals and vary in length and intensity. True labor contractions may be irregular initially, but eventually they come at regular and shorter intervals, become more intense, and last longer. The contractions associated with false labor also tend to be centered in the lower abdomen while the pain of true-labor contractions is more likely to emanate in the lower back and wrap around the abdomen. True labor contractions are also persistent while Braxton Hicks contractions may subside with changes in position. Willowleaf hollies are good in the 6- to 8-foot range. Dear Neil: I’m saving pepper seeds for next spring. As they’re drying, would it help if I sprinkled them with medicated foot powder to prevent mold or mildew? Don’t do that. There’s no telling what effect a medical product might have on the seeds. Letting them dry thoroughly, then storing them in a sealed bag or bottle in the refrigerator should be all you need to do. Dear Neil: I stuck some poplar branches in the ground after pruning my tree last winter. To my surprise, they sprouted roots and have grown vigorously. When can I dig them and replant them? Some of their branches are bigger than the main stem. Do I cut these off, or just transplant the entire thing? If I’m understanding your question, the rooted “cuttings” have started to branch. If so, you’ll probably want to remove some of the lower branches as you transplant them while they’re dormant this win- ter (January is ideal). If the new trees are more than 2 or 3 feet tall, they may suffer a little setback from the roots that will be lost. Dear Neil: We have converted our vegetable garden from the spring into a winter garden with a hoop-style greenhouse. We’ve had ants in the garden all season, and baits haven’t helped. What could we use now? That’s a difficult question to answer, and I really don’t think I should attempt it here without knowing precisely what type of ant is involved. Their feeding habits, and therefore, the controls you might use will vary depending on species. The fact that it’s a vegetable garden area further complicates things. Contact your county Extension office for help through Texas A&M’s Entomology specialists. You may also find help at the TAMU Entomology website. Have a question you’d like Neil to consider? Mail it to him in care of the Wise County Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX 76234 or email him at mailbag@ sperrygardens.com. Neil regrets that he cannot reply to questions individually. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?” — J. B. Priestley A cold delicate death dances like a ballerina suspended in time. Snow and ice clings as precariously as life to passionate pink petals unfurling from forest green foliage, blood red thorns. Nature’s brush abstract as a blind Picasso, as random as dice, creates beauty in contrast. Our roaming photographer captured this image in the yard sprawling before the antique Waggoner Mansion in Decatur. Perched (Major Credit Cards Accepted) on a hilltop, the tower on top overlooked the town transformed by a dotting of snow. It marked the first snowfall of the season in Wise County, and a sudden sense of finality as the kingdom of winter sprouted overnight on the rolling prairie. The freezing flowers mark the end of warmth as cold and darkness grows. But it also foreshadows nature’s renewal, the burst of life that blooms every spring, and the magic inherent in the season’s first snow.
