Looking Forward to the Real Mother’s Day
By Barbara Rainey
My first memories of Mother’s
Day are sitting as a child in
church as the minister recognized
all the mothers. I remember them
standing in recognition of their
day. I also remember them all
wearing corsages. It was a tradition in that generation, and somehow the men knew it was part of
their jobs to provide the corsages
for Mother’s Day Sunday.
years, I felt funny standing in
church, as if that role still belonged only to my mother and not
to me. But by the time I had three
or four kids, I was firmly established in my new identity. As my
daughter Ashley said during her
fourth pregnancy, “I don’t know
what happened to the old Ashley.
She got lost somewhere along the
way.” Mother was indelibly who I
was, and the vestiges of the old

Things to pray about with and for your kids




Pray for you kids and their friends.
Even harder, pray for those who aren’t your kids friend.
Pray for those graduating high school and college.
Pray that in the last month of school, your teens make the
most of their time and share their faith.
Praying is awesome! It’s also something we learn. It’s not the
most natural thing. Just like teaching our kids to talk we need
to teach them to pray. Pray with them, for them and on their
behalf! You won’t regret it!

I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps
you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone
would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.”
-Matthew 5:39-41
For whatever reason, forgiveness has been at the forefront of my
mind this week, though it always should be. This section of Scripture is a great reminder to us straight for our Lord that it’s never
about winning, its not about being right but it’s about forgiveness
and putting others first. Model this at home. Your teens need to
see this. Talk about why forgiving others is so important.

Gwen Stefani- “This is What the Truth Feels Like”
Background: Gwen Renée Stefani; born October 3, 1969, is an
American singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and actress. She is
the co-founder and lead vocalist of the ska band No Doubt. During
the band's hiatus, Stefani embarked on a solo career in 2004 by
releasing her debut studio album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Inspired by pop music from the 1980s, the album was met with both
critical and commercial success. Including her work with No Doubt,
Stefani has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
What Parents should know about their new album: By the time I finished listening to This Is What the Truth Feels Like, I felt like a protective older brother reacting to news that his little sis was being manhandled by life's big baddies. On "Rare," Gwen
Stefani vulnerably admits, "I am broken, I am insecure/Complicated, oh yeah, that's for
sure/I feel worthless, I've been hurt so bad/I get nervous that you won't love me back." That's
a precarious precipice, for sure. And it's like she's not even aware of the danger. Because
when she's not articulating the agony her ex-husband put her through, she's all in—both emotionally and, it would seem, physically, too—for the new guy she herself has admitted will be
seen as her "rebound." Stefani insists that she can feel the truth of her latest relationship,
and she desperately wants to believe it will be the real deal this time around. But feelings are
flawed barometers of solid substances such as truth—both for pop stars like Gwen Stefani
and for all of the rest of us who internalize the familiar-but-still-problematic philosophy she
espouses. If it feels so right, it can't be wrong, she gushes. And while one would hope that
such a seasoned artist would have been through enough to recognize the peril of capitulating to that old lie … perhaps hope is not always the best strategy.
V.Rose– Young Dangerous Heart
A formidable female-fusion
of modern pop unlike anything else Christian music
has to offer, pop artist
V.Rose. This vibrant young
artist is making a splash
with her debut release
Young Dangerous Heart, which hit shelves
and digital markets April 22. The 13-track
album is a sonic blast collection that is
packed tight with power-pop grooves fueled
by forgiveness, informed by truth; an empowering reminder for the younger generation
who may be struggling to find themselves.
"The transition from the teenage years to
being a young adult is such a vulnerable
place," explains the 27-year old. "You can
grow into being a strong, confident person or
an insecure and confused, all depending on
whether you play it safe and try to make
people happy or whether you can listen and
follow God's voice in your heart. If you can do
that, true joy is within reach."

the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye
(Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.
Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie
Rated PG--13-extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem.

Honestly, Mother’s Day was usually somewhat of a disappointment to me. The inherent promise and expectation of a day set
aside to honor mothers was never met. It’s
not that my husband didn’t try. He always
bought me something; usually it was a rose
bush or another plant for the yard, which he
knew I liked. And my kids always made me a
sweet card or a crayoned picture in Sunday
school. They all said, “Happy Mother’s Day,”
and gave me kisses and hugs. But then everyone needed lunch and naps, and there
were squabbles to resolve and needs to be
met …
The kind of honor I longed for and needed in
those harried years of selfless, endless labor
was not to be found on the second Sunday
in May. It’s not possible for children to really
appreciate you for the enormity of your service. What I wanted was a day free from sibling rivalry and a simple, genuine, “Thanks,
Mom,” that was unprompted by my husband
or the Sunday school teacher.
In hindsight, I now understand what I longed
for is only possible when your children grow
up and become parents themselves. Then
they begin to “get it”!
are grown that I really appreciate my own
mother. And even so, I really have no idea
what sacrifices, worries, and suffering
she endured for me and my brothers. Only God knows, and He is the One who will
give the ultimate honor when He says one
day, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
And that is the real Mother’s Day. May
your focus be on the honor to come on
that day, and may you raise your children
to walk closely with Jesus all their days.
And remember, as I so often forgot in the
daily-ness of life, that a mother’s job is
laborious not because it is small, but because it is gigantic. Mothering is the most
important calling on a woman’s
life. Mothers can indeed change the
world.

You see, mothering is a ministry to the future. It’s a very private, unseen ministry. It’s
like a long-term, 20-year investment in which
you cannot withdraw any of your money until
the 20 years is up. You place your bets and
then wait to see the outcome many years
ahead. In mothering, there are moments of
glory when you see hints that your investment is paying off, but they are not permanent until the end.
Interestingly, it’s only now that my children

Hi Parents!
Summer is nearly here! That means lot’s of downtime for your teens. I want to encourage you to find
constructive things for them to do. I don’t want you overloading them but let them do things that are
going to be edifying for them and hopefully build them up. Also, we are going to offering them the
chance to come up to the church on certain days to hang out and serve in various ways. Look for that
sign up coming soon. Also, I wanted to let you know that I have somewhat kept the summer schedule
light because of the expectation of the arrival of our baby, Finn. I don’t want things on the calendar,
then have to postpone or cancel them. Also, my mother is in poor health and she may pass at any time.
Thanks for you understanding of this. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have
questions or concerns.
In Him, Pastor Josh
