ABOUT
The Gund Gallery
Dedicated in the fall of 2011, the Graham Gund Gallery advances the role of
visual art as a critical centerpiece of Kenyon’s liberal-arts mission by
championing the best art and artists of the 20th-and 21st-centuries via an
active exhibitions schedule, expanding permanent collection, and formal and
informal learning experiences.
Public Art at Kenyon College
Shortly after the museum opened, the Gund Gallery Collection launched with
inaugural gifts from alumni donors and board members. Bookending this new
collection of 20th- and 21st-century art were gifts of three Lewis Hine
photographs from the first decade of the 20th century and two recent video
works by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, which were joined by the gift of
a 1986 wall sculpture by Louise Nevelson. In 2014, eighty additional works of
contemporary art were donated by Ann and Graham Gund ’63, further
securing this collection’s important focus and trajectory. The Kenyon College
Collection includes a range of pre-20th-century art, works related to the
College’s history and alumni, ethnographic objects, and material culture and is
managed and cared for by the Gund Gallery.
Kenyon’s beautiful campus provides the perfect backdrop for a growing roster
of important and historically meaningful works of art from the Gund Gallery
Collection and the Kenyon College Collection. Public art installations are
approved and sited by the Public Art Committee, a group of dedicated
faculty members, College administrators, staff members, students, community
representatives, and gallery personnel. Publicly displayed works of art now
include special QR-code labeling to provide an array of interpretive and
historical information researched and written by Gund Associates, the
museum’s dynamic interns.
