and drug free program for our 7-12 student body in April. We have several pictures of the event on our school website

Summer Projects
This big projects this summer include
a new walk-in freezer at Lacona, a new
fire alarm system at Liberty Center, and
a new preschool playground at Milo.
These projects are funded through penny sales tax and/or grants.
Budget/Contract Settlements
Kudos to our teacher and support
staff associations for taking into acount
a tight budget, and reaching a reasonable
settlement for next year’s contracts.
We will be hiring back all positions
vacated by retiring or resigning staff.
Staff Changes
Mrs. Erin Jensen, Instrumental Music, will not return to our district after
welcoming a new baby in May. Ms.
Amanda Nunn will take her place and
will also be conducting our summer
band lessons this year. To sign up for

Mr. Cole Anderson, Secondary Math,
is taking a position at the East Marshall
District. I am actively conducting interviews in May and hope to have his
replacement determined by the time this
newsletter is published.
Mrs. Tisha Lawton is our new head
dance team coach, replacing Carrie
Cooper. We have a couple of new summer coaches - Jill Oliver, Head Jr. High
Softball, and Jessica Hamell, of Carlisle, will be assisting Nate Bauer with
HS softball.

The Co-Ed State Track Meet is
scheduled for May 20th-22nd at Drake
Stadium in Des Moines. Three members of the boy’s track team qualified
for the state meet. Austin Allen in both
the 100m & 200m, Evan Schurman in
the 400m, and Daniel Hagen in the discus.
High school baseball practice began
on May 3rd with 18 boys starting out
the season. The high school softball
team opens practice on May 10th with
about 20 girls expected to participate
this summer. Both teams host tournaments on May 29th.

scholarships at Awards Night May 13th, 2010. Funds for these scholarships are

What an exciting time for Adrenaline
Dance Team. 34 dancers make up the Jr.
High, JV, and Varsity squads. They are
ready to tackle new projects and perform at a variety of community events.
They are asking for your help for one
project. We would like to compile a list
of recent graduates and family members
who are currently serving in the Armed
Forces. We would like to recognize local service men and women at our performances.

FFA
Trap Shoot Teams
The Southeast Warren FFA trap
shooting team recently competed in the
Harlan FFA Trap Shooting Invitational
on May 1st. Our first squad of Dylan
Lawler, Dillon Montoya, Devin Reed,
Justin Brummer, and Austin Bristoll
received 1st place with 201/250. Our
second squad of Aaron Coffman, Kane
Ellenwood, Cody Mikesell, Sawyer
Steenhoek, and Tyler Renfeldt received
5th place with 187/250. Devin Reed
placed 3rd overall as an individual.
The trap shoot teams also shot at the
Izaak Walton league in Indianola on
Tuesday May 4th. Aaron Coffman got
49/50 for the top gun award.
The trap shoot teams shot at the TriCounty FFA Trap Shoot Invitational
on Saturday, May 8th. Our first squad
received a 2nd place with a shoot of
184/250.
Annual Banquet
The Southeast Warren FFA Chapter
held their annual banquet on May 7th,
2010. Adam Brummer did a terrific job
as the keynote speaker. Bradley Byers
received recognition for his Star Final-
ist in the area of Agriculture Placement.
The Greenhands and Chapter Farmers
were all recognized. The freshmen that
participated in Conduct of Meetings
were all recognized, as well as the students who participated in Soils Judging,
Meats Judging, and Livestock Judging.

participated in the Job Interview CDE.
The girls and boys that participated in
Youth Hunter Education Course were
all recognized. Bradley Byers received
a dairy proficiency award, Dillon Montoya received a swine placement proficiency award and Lindzey Northway,
Myles Thompson, and Alex Sudbrock
are all were recipients of the beef Proficiency Award.
Lindzey Northway received the horse
production proficiency. Bradley Byers
received the Dekalb Award, which is for
academic achievement. Bradley, Myles
and Dillon all received recognition for
their Iowa Degrees.
The following students were sworn
in as officers. Justin Brummer as President, Myles Thompson as Vice President, Lindzey Northway as Secretary,
Chrissy Dittmer as Treasurer, Torie
Hommer as Reporter and Spencer Williams as Sentinel. All of the FFA Members did an outstanding job this year in
all of the activities they participated in.

We are appreciative of PIE’s support of our annual field trips through the
funds collected during the 2009 basket
raffle. The following spring field trips
were possible as a result of that one
fundraiser:

Thanks to the Community State Bank
who sent representatives to present a
savings lesson to our 1st and 2nd graders on April 29th. These presentations
were a good reinforcement of general
money counting and simple financial
management for those grade levels.
Because of the inclement weather
during the first weekend of the Drugfree Schools discounted Adventureland
ticket, the expiration of those tickets
was extended to include any weekend
until June 30th. What a great opportunity for families to enjoy this favorite
summer time spot!
The PK-6 Carnival was held at the
Primary building on May 21st. Thanks
to all of the many volunteers required
to make this such a memorable experience for the children! Features were a
tethered balloon ride, the bounce house,
and many games.
A homemade kite-flying event was
held in conjunction with our Japan
Friendship Fair on May 5th. Twentyeight students and their visiting adult
entertained the rest of the student body
on the baseball field, as they worked so
hard at getting their kite up into the air.
Only one ended up in a tree! A total of
nine stations were visited by each classroom during the Field Day activities
– jump rope, parachute, softball throw,
kickball, football toss, base races, relay
races, obstacle course, dodgeball, and
the ever popular water balloon toss.
Thanks to Mrs. Burgin and Mrs. Young
for organizing the kite-flying contest, as
well as the Friendship Fair held on May
28th, and to Mr. Oliver and his many
high school volunteers for spearheading
Field Day.
The kindergarten round-up day on
April 30th was a huge success, with 35
four-year-olds in attendance. They are
all eagerly awaiting the beginning of
the 2010-11 school year, when they will
be coming to school all day every day.
Congratulations to the May 13th first
and second grade spelling bee winners
– Lexi Rupe - first place, and Randy Jimenez - second place. The traditional
3rd and 4th grade spelling bee on May
21st was too late in the month to include
the winners’ names in this issue of the
Warren Pride. Their names will be announced in the August issue. Winners
of both bees will represent S. E. Warren
at the Iowa State Fair Spelling Bee.
Plans are underway for this sum-
mer’s elementary remedial reading and
math summer school classes.
All Primary volunteers were honored
at a Volunteer Tea in the media center
following the Friendship Fair on May
29th. Eighty individuals were named
by teachers as volunteers in our building
throughout the 09-10 school year. PIE
recognized staff members and several
super volunteers with a special thank
you gift. Those special volunteers at-
tended the PIE meetings on a regular
basis and/or worked faithfully at PIE’s
activities, as well as those who worked
with the students in our classrooms on a
regular basis.
We are planning several upgrade
projects over the summer. We will be
adding new early childhood equipment,
replenishing the woodchip and sandbox
supplies, and expanding our present
computer lab from 16 to 24 computer
stations. We are also planning to do
some simple reconfiguring of the media center; with a computer for each
child, the computer lab could be used
next year for whole group instruction of
basic keyboarding and supervised curriculum-related research of designated
topics for the older students, as well as
games to reinforce reading and math
skills for all of the grades.
We are researching the possibility of
expanding our 3-year-old program from
a 2 hour session to a 2 ½ hour session
and adding a second session on a different morning for the 2010-11 school
year. This would put us more in line
with 3-year-old programs in other communities. We will be notifying parents
of enrolled students of those changes as
soon as they are confirmed.
It is with sadness that
we say farewell to our three
long-time Primary teachers who retired at the end
of this school year – Mrs.
Vicki Young, third grade;
Mrs. Paula Baker, third
grade; and Mrs. Keenan,
first grade.
They have
served our community
well over the years, and
we wish them well in their
retirement plans. I would
like to add my expression
of appreciation to Sharon
Young, preschool associate, and Rose
Ripperger, part-time nurse associate.

Accelerated Reading
We are so proud of our Primary Center Readers! This year has seen a good number of students make their reading goals and make it to all four of the AR Parties.
We encourage all of our students to keep reading all summer long. Take that book
to the beach, read at night in the tent, go to the library programs and read, read,
read! Another big thank you to the parents of the PIE organization who put on the
fabulous parties which inspire and encourage our kids to read. Congratulations to
all and have a great summer!

Historical Field Trip
The
third
graders
went
on a field trip
to the Iowa Historical Building
to see an original opera about
George Washington Carver,
whom
they
have been reading about. The
play
showed
much of his life
in Iowa. The
students then
went to three
workshops. At
one of the workshops the students reinacted the incident at Katz Drug Store in Des
Moines where African Americans were not allowed to sit at the counter. Another
workshop showed them how to make paper and draw a plant as Mr. Carver did in
his lifetime. The last workshop allowed them to sing songs from the 1800’s that
were sung by slaves. This field trip was made possible by a grant written by Mrs.

IDM Final Results
The Intermediate Building held the
final Data Day of the 2009-2010 school
year on May 12th. Each grade level
team met to analyze reading data gathered from the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) fluency & accuracy test, the ITBS reading
results, and the Measures of Academic
Progress test (MAP) reading results.
Using the accumulated data, the
teams set the reading intervention
groups for the 2010-2011 school year.
The DIBELS data is the primary data
used for intervention reading groups.
DIBELS has predetermined fluency
goals that change over time for each
grade level. The Instructional Decision
Making (IDM) goal is that 80% of students meet the DIBELS reading fluency
without intervention above the general
education reading instruction. The accuracy goal is constant at 95%.
The 4th grade class (Class of 2018)
ended the year with 98% of the students
reading with at least 95% accuracy
while reading unpracticed grade level
materials. Seventy-six percent of the
4th grade students met the reading fluency target of 118 correctly read words
per minute. The fluency remained constant with the winter testing data and
was 10% higher than the fall testing
score of 69%!
The 5th grade class (Class of 2017)
has made considerable gains since entering 4th grade. In the fall of 2009 the
current 5th grade class had only 50%
of the students meet the fluency goal.
Seventy-five percent of the 5th graders
are now meeting the grade-level fluency
goal. Only 68% of the 5th graders were
reading accurately when they entered
4th grade. Ninety-one percent of the
class is now meeting the accuracy goal!
The IDM team believes that the small
intervention reading groups, additional
fluency practice carried on through
out the day, and the Concept Oriented
Reading Instruction (CORI) strategies
used in science and social studies are all
major factors in the reading improvements in this grade level. This is especially significant because 29% of the
5th grade class have at least one special
education goal.
The 6th grade class ended the year
with a decline in the percent of students
meeting the fluency goal, while the accuracy remained constant at 90%. The
fluency percentage dropped from 74%
in the winter to only 60% of the students meeting or exceeding the fluency
goal of 125 correct words per minute on
grade level reading passages.
The IDM team is pleased with the
improvements in reading fluency and
accuracy. The concern still remains that
none of the classes have met the 80%
fluency. Additional reading fluency
practice will be worked into the normal
routines practiced by these students on
a daily basis.

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

The 4-6th grade classes all went on
field trips this spring. The 4th grade
travelled to Living History Farms in
Des Moines. The 5th grade went to the
Children’s Water Festival held on the
DMACC campus and the 6th grade visited Principal Park to take in an Iowa
Cubs game. These trips were made possible through the PIE committee and we
are very appreciative.
MAP testing has been completed as
our alternate assessment as required by
the state and the DIBELS testing has
also been completed. The DIBELS test
supplies us with reading achievement
information which helps us determine
the needs of each student. The compilation of scores and measurement of
progress is explained in Mrs. Beard’s
article on page 6.
Mr. Oliver and Mr. Anderson have
once again organized the flipping, pitching, and casting contest. This year’s
winners were: 1st place Dalton Thompson, who received a new rod and reel.,
2nd place Trinity Cox and 3rd place

Regular Board Meeting
April 12, 2010
The Southeast Warren Board of Education met
in regular session April 12, 2010, in the media
center of the Junior/Senior High School Building.
Board President Paul Mead called the meeting to
order at 5:30 p.m. The following board members
were present: Jennifer Mihalovich, Marianne
Lester, Ron Miller, and Larrie Williams. Superintendent/Secondary Principal Delane Galvin, Primary Principal Charlotte Weaklend, Intermediate
Principal Dan Dow, Transportation Director Joel
Mosher, and Board Secretary Julie Wilson were
also in attendance, along with members from the
community.
AGENDA: Motion by Marianne Lester, seconded
by Jennifer Mihalovich to approve the agenda.
Ayes: 5.
Tanner Allen. We had 18 students who
qualified for the Summer Games held
this July in Ames.
The 6th grade students travelled to
Liberty Center on Tuesday May 4th for
Mad About Money program presented
by the Iowa Insurance Division. The
general feedback is that it was well-received and educational.
The Bookfair has been back and ran
from Monday May 3rd - Saturday May
8th. They raised a very respectable
$1,000 for our library needs!
I would like to congratulate Mrs. Pat
Butler on her 30 years of service to the
school district. She will retire at the end
of this school year, and we appreciate
her contributions in the field of education as a classroom teacher and most recently in the area of special education.
Best wishes to Pat and her family.

COMMENTS FROM THE AUDIENCE: Alyssa
Spear spoke to the Board concerning her plans
to be a foreign exchange student in Germany
next year. She will be sponsored by the Indianola Rotary Club. Alyssa will be leaving toward the
end of July and will be gone for the entire year.
the students. She and her husband have collected quite a few over the years, and they have
many interesting tools that are unfamiliar to the
students (and teachers). The children always
enjoyed seeing the old hand tools and hearing
about how they were used in the pioneer days.
BOARD SALUTES: Dan Dow recognized Kim
Carnes for her efforts with the book fairs. Because of her efforts, approximately $2,000 worth
of books has been added to the Intermediate
Center library this year.
Marlys has also volunteered her time to teach
the 3rd graders how to make something very
special--their own basket! She has graciously
given of that time and talent to invite any parents
who wanted to learn how to do this beforehand to
come to school an hour early so she could teach
them, and then they would teach the students,
right along with Marlys. Even as the economy
has fluctuated over the many years that we
have done this project, Marlys kept the cost to
a minimum, and all students have been able to
participate and weave their own basket. The students leave school that day with their own special
creation, feeling quite a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Marlys Sowers, local community member and
professional basket maker, has been active with
the S.E. Warren 3rd graders for at least the past
15 years. When we have studied Laura Ingalls
Wilder’s Little House in the Big Woods, she has
brought pioneer tools and artifacts to school and
has taken the time to show and explain them to

We have certainly appreciated the time and effort that Marlys has given over the past 15 years
and also her willingness to be a part of our 3rd
grade curriculum. Her cheerful, friendly attitude
helps each student (and parent) feel successful.
We have especially enjoyed having a Southeast
Warren patron provide her expertise in this interesting endeavor and are looking forward to it
again this year!

REPORTS:
Transportation report submitted by Joel Mosher:
We had 5 extra bus trips for the month. All the
drivers attended the required 3-hour inservice
class held at Melcher on March 9th. The rest of
the month was spent doing general repairs.
Primary Principal’s report submitted by Charlotte
Weaklend:
Our spring parent teacher conferences topped
out at 90% attendance, down slightly from the
91% attendance last fall.
The Ottumwa Rotary Club gave each of our 3rd
graders a free paper back dictionary on March
24th. Along with the dictionaries came some
words of advice about the importance of reading
from the couple who delivered the dictionaries.
The Indianola Lyons Club will be conducting free
eye exams through their service project called
Iowa Kid Sight on April 20th for our 4-year-olds.
The process is simple. An MTI Photo screener
is used to take a special Polaroid picture of the
child’s eyes to detect eye problems. The results
are evaluated by specialists in the Department of
Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Results will
be available two to four weeks after the screening. If a possible vision problem is detected, parents will be sent a letter of referral for the child
and a list of ophthalmologists and optometrists in
our area. A consent form signed by the parents
are required for each child’s participation in the
screening.
A big thanks to community members Mary Jo and
Duane Ohnemus who brought the Milo Lyons’
jump house to the school for our third quarter Accelerated Reader party on March 26th. Thanks
also to the Lyons for making this opportunity
available to us. We are privileged to have many
volunteers in our school – including those who
come on a weekly or daily basis. I will again be
hosting a thank you tea for all of our volunteers
sometime in May.
Over the past few years, fall and spring fundraising events, the cookie walk, the Scholastic Book
Fairs, and the basket raffle by the Partners in Education have supplied us with the funds for extra
classroom supplies and playground equipment
like balls and jump ropes, as well as covered the
expenses incurred from field trips, all of which is
above and beyond what our budget allows. In
addition, we have conducted several smaller
fundraisers ones from our office – including the
collection of Campbell’s labels and Big G box
tops, the upcoming recycling of ink cartridges and
cell phones, and the online shopping credit to local schools through several different programs.
We will be purchasing playground equipment this
spring especially designed for children age three
to five from our preschool grant dollars, but the
time is coming when the existing equipment for
the older children will have to be replaced. The
storage and relocation of our playground ten plus
years ago during the construction of our new
building placed extra stress on the then nearly
new equipment. While that equipment is safe, I
realize that they are not going to last forever. We
also conduct several service learning projects
that involve asking for money – including the St.
Jude’s math-a-thon for cancer research, Jump
Rope for Heart, the angel tree, and others.
The needs are great, but I am concerned about
the extra financial burden that many of our families are currently under with our poor economy
and would welcome the board’s input about our
continuing with these fundraising efforts.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Watch for
the blue ribbons around the trees and the banner
in our schoolyard to mark this important event!
Intermediate Principal’s report submitted by Dan
Dow:
The 4th-6th graders that qualified for the character trip traveled to Knoxville on March 31st to
go bowling.
Thursday April 1st the students participated in an
Easter egg hunt at the park in Lacona.
The staff attended CORI inservice with Barb
Schons from the Dept of Education.
The students and staff have completed the 4 required tornado drills. We still have 2 fire drills to
conduct for the year.
Athletic Director’s report submitted by Chuck
Jones:
Spring sports season has begun. We have a lot
of kids running up and down the hallways itching for that opportunity to get outside and run in
the spring air. Coaches for track are Mr. Dirkx,
JH boys; Mr. Walter, JH girls; Mr. Oliver & Mr.
Anderson, HS boys; Mr. Bauer & Ms. Sealock,
HS girls. Mr. Tierney will be coaching the boys
and girls golf teams.
The boys’ golf team will be hosting the Pride of
Iowa Meet on May 3rd. The meet will be held at
Deer Run in Indianola. The Little Warhawk Invitational track meet has been dropped from the
schedule due in large part to the poor condition
of the track.
Martensdale-St. Mary’s has taken over the
meet.
Spring and summer schedules are available on
the Southeast Warren web site. All are subject to
change. There are three sizes of schedules available at the high school office: pocket, notebook,
& poster.
Below you will find the Sportsmanship Ratings for
football, basketball, and wrestling. Officials are
mandated to rate each game that they officiate.
Football received 47 ratings; basketball received
55 ratings; and wrestling received 40 ratings.

Athletic Booster Club
The boosters are looking forward to spring and
summer sports. Some projects that will be undertaken this spring will be the paving of the baseball & softball batting cages. This will give teams
the opportunity to hit even when the field is not in
condition to be used. They will also be purchasing various items such as a new batting cage and
two team bats for the baseball team.
Team state banners are still on the to do list. The
cost of one state banner from the girls athletic
union is $150 and from the boys athletic association is $53. We would need to purchase over
twenty banners for both boys and girls. So, if
anyone would like to donate some money to the
booster club towards the purchase of a banner it
would be greatly appreciated

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Superintendent Delane Galvin reported on the following
items:
1. Work is being continued on the Every Fifteen
Minutes Program. Presentations will be made to
the students the week of prom.
2. The graduation ceremony will be held on May
15th at 6:00 p.m.
3. We are still trying to work out a schedule with
the Indianola School District to share the Ag program.
4. Health Occupation classes will be offered
next year.
5. Graduation requirements will be reviewed
and modified to align with the Iowa Core Curriculum and courses offered. Revised graduation
requirements will be brought to the Board in May
for approval.
6. At the Pride of Iowa Principal’s meeting there
was discussion that Nodaway Valley may leave
the conference. If so, Clarke has inquired about
entering the conference.
7. The 5th-12th grade band concert will be held
tonight at 7:00.
8. Letters are being sent out for scheduling
nights to all secondary students.
9. The Building Leadership Team is attending
IDM Training.
10.The spring play will be held on May 1st.
11.Spring Fling Dances will be held on May7th
for the Junior High students and on May 8th for
the High School students.
12.The District received a $25,000 grant to replace the fire alarm system. Bids are being requested and will be brought to the Board at the
May meeting for approval.
WALK-IN FREEZER PROJECT: Superintendent
Galvin related to the Board that he is in the process of obtaining bids to bring back to the Board
for the walk-in freezer project. Superintendent
Galvin would still like to move forward with the
project, but stay within the projected budget.
Bids will be brought back to the Board for consideration at the May board meeting.

REVIEW STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS:
Superintendent Galvin reviewed the 2009-2010
ITBS/ITED test results with the Board. The results as a whole show improvement over the
prior year, but there are still a couple areas of
concern.
CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM: Superintendent
Galvin related that the five-year school meal program review was held in March. The consultant
handling the review was extremely pleased with
the improvement in the school meals program
since the 2005 review. The consultant now felt
that Southeast Warren’s school meals program
was in the top five of the state. Kudos to the
Southeast Warren lunch staff.
SPORTSMANSHIP RATINGS: The annual
sportsmanship ratings for the boys’ sports programs were reviewed by the Board.
ACTIVITY PASSES FOR RETIRING TEACHERS: Superintendent Galvin related to the Board
that our current policy is to give lifetime activity
passes to retiring teachers. Superintendent Galvin recommended continuing to do so.
SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION: Superintendent Galvin related to the Board that he will have
evaluation materials ready for the May board
meeting.
PUBLIC HEARING ON 2010-2011 BUDGET: A
hearing was held to allow community members
the opportunity to speak concerning the 20102011 budget.
BUDGET GUARANTEE FOR 2010- 2011 BUDGET: Business Manager Julie Wilson recommended approving the budget guarantee for the
2010-2011 budget as a precautionary measure.
Motion by Ron Miller, seconded by Jennifer Mihalovich that the Board of Directors of the Southeast Warren Community School District will levy
property tax for the fiscal year 2010-2011 for the
regular program budget adjustment as allowed
under section 257.14, Code of Iowa.
2010-2011 BUDGET: Superintendent Galvin
recommended approving the 2010-2011 budget as published. The proposed tax rate is
$19.99794 per $1,000 taxable valuation. Motion
by Marianne Lester, seconded by Larrie Williams
to approve the 2010-2011 budget as published.
Ayes: 5.
PERSONNEL CHANGES: Superintendent Galvin recommended approving the retirement of
Karen Miller, Intermediate Secretary; approving
the resignations of Carrie Cooper, Dance Team
Coach; Kim Heim, Assistant Athletic Director,
and Cole Anderson, HS Math Teacher; approv-
ing the appointments of Karen Downs, Volunteer
Assistant FCCLA Advisor; Jill Oliver, Head JH
Softball Coach; Scott Dirkx, Assistant JH Boys’
Track Coach; and Jason Walter, Assistant JH
Girls’ Track Coach; and Bev Schurman, volunteer
driver for the senior class trip. Motion by Larrie
Williams, seconded by Ron Miller to approve the
personnel changes as presented. Ayes: 5. The
Board expressed their appreciation for Karen
Miller’s years of service.
TAG TRIP TO NAUVOO, ILLINOIS: Superintendent Galvin recommended approving the
TAG trip to Nauvoo, Illinois for the fifth and sixth
grade TAG students. The cost of the trip will be
approximately the same as last year. Motion by
Marianne Lester, seconded by Ron Miller to approve the TAG trip to Nauvoo, Illinois. Ayes: 5.
ISCAP PROGRAM: Business Manager Julie
Wilson recommended approving participation in
the ISCAP Program and approving the ISCAP
Supplemental Resolution. The program allows
the District to borrow money if needed for cash
flow purposes at a low interest cost. Motion by
Larrie Williams, seconded by Ron Miller to approve participation in the ISCAP Program and to
approve the ISCAP Supplemental Resolution.

STUDENT TEACHING AGREEMENT WITH
BUENA VISTA UNIVERSITY: Superintendent
Galvin recommended approving the student

Board that due to the extended school year for
snow make-up days, the school year would be

2009-2010 school calendar to make the Friday
before Memorial Day weekend a 1:30 dismissal.
