What to Expect
The Brown Travelers’ Ultimate Serengeti Safari is specially designed for those individuals seeking an unsurpassed wildlife viewing experience while traveling in safety
and comfort. Days will be spent viewing wildlife from specially-equipped 4WD Land
Rover Defenders with popped top roofs for easy wildlife viewing and photography;
window seats are guaranteed for every passenger. Though long drives between destinations have been minimized in this evenly paced itinerary, you can expect drives
of up to 3 hours in length on bumpy, dusty and occasionally muddy roads. The
accommodations have been chosen for their unique African feel, stunning settings,
the quality of service offered to the discerning traveler as well as their ideal proximity to the best seasonal wildlife viewing areas. The lodges are comfortable; most have
private verandahs and all have private bathrooms. All lodges have electricity provided by generators. Our Classic Camp affords you the quintessential safari experience,
harkening back to the days of Ernest Hemingway and Karen Blixen, when luxuries
such as walk-in tents and fine food – even in the most idyllic, remote settings – were
the norm. Our large walk-in tents come with camp beds dressed in linens, an
attached portable toilet and separate bucket shower, a private verandah with table,
washbasin and safari chairs; hot water showers are available anytime of day. Lighting
is by kerosene lamps, and the camp chef prepares delicious meals. You’ll be close to
nature yet safely distant. Expect temperatures with highs in the mid-to high-80s F
and lows in the 60s F; temperatures will be cooler at higher elevations, such as the
rim of the Ngorongoro Crater (7,600 feet).

The Ultimate Serengeti Safari includes:
Your adventure begins in Tarangire National Park, which is world-renowned for its
especially large elephant population and the spectacular baobab trees that dot the landscape. After two days, you wend your way to the lush and verdant Ngorongoro Crater,
a massive caldera inhabited by rhinoceros, elephants and black-maned lions. Then en
route to the Serengeti plains, you visit Olduvai Gorge, the site of the Leakey family’s
remarkable discoveries. Your journey concludes in the Serengeti, where you spend
your days amidst this incredible untamed wilderness where lions, cheetahs, warthogs
and literally millions of hoofed animals roam.

Please join the Brown Travelers' Ultimate Serengeti Safari from February 16-28, 2008
for a journey into the heart of East Africa. During safari, your expert naturalist guides
and a Brown faculty member will take you behind the scenes and off the beaten path
to introduce you to the culture, the people and the wildlife of this fascinating area. The
Brown faculty member will suggest advance readings, give lectures and lead discussions that will give you an additional perspective on this unique part of the world.
On this program, as on all Brown Travelers trips, a distinguished member of Brown’s
faculty will accompany our group, adding a unique and memorable perspective to this
truly extraordinary trip. The faculty lecturer will design and present an informative
educational program, including lectures, discussions and suggested advance readings.
As this brochure goes to press, the faculty member who will accompany the program
has not yet been confirmed, but we wanted to mail this brochure in time for you to

Tarangire is the perfect start of your wildlife-viewing itinerary. Teeming with large mammals, reptiles and an impressive array of birds, the park’s scenery is just as diverse as its wildlife. The
Tarangire River bisects the park, forming a massive river valley that is home to dik-dik, waterbuck, buffalo, elephant, hundreds of bird species and much more. Predators, of course, are
always close by. Enormous baobab trees dot the hills and valleys and create fantastical silhouettes
in the twilight. Your permanent tented lodge makes a perfect base for two days of fascinating

Game viewing as you go, depart Tarangire and head up into the Ngorongoro Highlands to Gibb’s
Farm, a beautiful coffee estate and working organic farm. Using this lush oasis as your base, you
take advantage of all the possibilities on the property and in the nearby town of Karatu: a school
visit, opportunities for biking, hiking and guided nature walks, a cultural visit that allows you to
participate in traditional beading, with plenty of time to relax in the gardens. The food here is
literally farm fresh and is widely considered to be the best in Tanzania!

Enjoy a cup of Gibb’s famous coffee with your farm-fresh breakfast. Then make your way to the

wildlife, bursting at the seams with 30,000 animals yearround. Descend by Land Rover on the crater floor,
where you may spot rhino, leopard, buffalo, lion, elephant, flamingo and more. Continue to search the next
afternoon and return to camp high on the crater rim each night.

as the plains open up before you, over 5,700 square miles of sprawling, unspoiled landscape.

Tarangire River bisects the park, forming a massive river valley that is home to dik-dik, waterbuck, buffalo, elephant, hundreds of bird species and much more. Predators, of course, are
always close by. Enormous baobab trees dot the hills and valleys and create fantastical silhouettes
in the twilight. Your permanent tented lodge makes a perfect base for two days of fascinating

Ngorongoro Highland
Game viewing as you go, depart Tarangire and head up into the Ngorongoro Highlands to Gibb’s
Farm, a beautiful coffee estate and working organic farm. Using this lush oasis as your base, you
take advantage of all the possibilities on the property and in the nearby town of Karatu: a school
visit, opportunities for biking, hiking and guided nature walks, a cultural visit that allows you to
participate in traditional beading, with plenty of time to relax in the gardens. The food here is
literally farm fresh and is widely considered to be the best in Tanzania!

Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Enjoy a cup of Gibb’s famous coffee with your farm-fresh breakfast. Then make your way to the
top edge of the Ngorongoro Crater wall for a breathtaking
view. At 2,000 feet below the rim lies a microcosm of
wildlife, bursting at the seams with 30,000 animals yearround. Descend by Land Rover on the crater floor,
where you may spot rhino, leopard, buffalo, lion, elephant, flamingo and more. Continue to search the next
afternoon and return to camp high on the crater rim each night.
Savor great meals, engaging conversation by a roaring fire and a
good night’s sleep under your cozy down comforter.

Olduvai Gorge/ Serengeti National Park
You travel into the Serengeti plains, stopping first at the famed Olduvai Gorge. Within these desolate gullies, the Leakey family unearthed some of the earliest remains of man, including the jawbone of Zinjanthropus Man. At the Gorge Museum, you learn about the development of early man
as well as the Leakeys’ meticulous methods and their remarkable finds. Continue on and watch
as the plains open up before you, over 5,700 square miles of sprawling, unspoiled landscape.

What to Expect
The Brown Travelers’ Ultimate Serengeti Safari is specially designed for those individuals seeking an unsurpassed wildlife viewing experience while traveling in safety
and comfort. Days will be spent viewing wildlife from specially-equipped 4WD Land
Rover Defenders with popped top roofs for easy wildlife viewing and photography;
window seats are guaranteed for every passenger. Though long drives between destinations have been minimized in this evenly paced itinerary, you can expect drives
of up to 3 hours in length on bumpy, dusty and occasionally muddy roads. The
accommodations have been chosen for their unique African feel, stunning settings,
the quality of service offered to the discerning traveler as well as their ideal proximity to the best seasonal wildlife viewing areas. The lodges are comfortable; most have
private verandahs and all have private bathrooms. All lodges have electricity provided by generators. Our Classic Camp affords you the quintessential safari experience,
harkening back to the days of Ernest Hemingway and Karen Blixen, when luxuries
such as walk-in tents and fine food – even in the most idyllic, remote settings – were
the norm. Our large walk-in tents come with camp beds dressed in linens, an
attached portable toilet and separate bucket shower, a private verandah with table,
washbasin and safari chairs; hot water showers are available anytime of day. Lighting
is by kerosene lamps, and the camp chef prepares delicious meals. You’ll be close to
nature yet safely distant. Expect temperatures with highs in the mid-to high-80s F
and lows in the 60s F; temperatures will be cooler at higher elevations, such as the
rim of the Ngorongoro Crater (7,600 feet).

Your adventure begins in Tarangire National Park, which is world-renowned for its
especially large elephant population and the spectacular baobab trees that dot the landscape. After two days, you wend your way to the lush and verdant Ngorongoro Crater,
a massive caldera inhabited by rhinoceros, elephants and black-maned lions. Then en
route to the Serengeti plains, you visit Olduvai Gorge, the site of the Leakey family’s
remarkable discoveries. Your journey concludes in the Serengeti, where you spend
your days amidst this incredible untamed wilderness where lions, cheetahs, warthogs
and literally millions of hoofed animals roam.
BROWN FACULTY LECTURER
Please join the Brown Travelers' Ultimate Serengeti Safari from February 16-28, 2008
for a journey into the heart of East Africa. During safari, your expert naturalist guides
and a Brown faculty member will take you behind the scenes and off the beaten path
to introduce you to the culture, the people and the wildlife of this fascinating area. The
Brown faculty member will suggest advance readings, give lectures and lead discussions that will give you an additional perspective on this unique part of the world.
On this program, as on all Brown Travelers trips, a distinguished member of Brown’s
faculty will accompany our group, adding a unique and memorable perspective to this
truly extraordinary trip. The faculty lecturer will design and present an informative
educational program, including lectures, discussions and suggested advance readings.
As this brochure goes to press, the faculty member who will accompany the program
has not yet been confirmed, but we wanted to mail this brochure in time for you to
make plans to participate. The presence of the faculty member ensures that Brownsponsored journeys are not only pleasant travel experiences but
