2011 Annual Report YMCA OF SILICOn VALLEY
OUR BELIEFS SHAPE OUR FUTURE 2011 Annual Report YMCA OF Silicon Valley We believe in Our Mission… To strengthen our community by improving the quality of life and inspiring individuals and families to develop their fullest potential in spirit, mind and body. “We believe that the Y, as a movement, has both the national reach and the local presence to drive lasting personal and social change.” Neil Nicoll, President and CEO YMCA of the USA Dear Friends, Our beliefs shape our future. They define our purpose and give us a clear path forward to fulfill our dreams. We believe in the importance of our cause, strengthening community, and the endless possibilities for impacting lives. By focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, we enrich lives while addressing critical community needs. This year, we are excited and encouraged to see tangible results of how we are making a difference. In multiple surveys, our members and participants have responded that we are helping them improve their lives in a variety of ways. We’ve seen it in their actions as well. We are also extremely grateful to have more donors and volunteers than ever before, thanks to the giving spirit of so many. In addressing community needs, we believe in the strength and synergy that results from collaborations. We understand that no organization can do it alone. We are committed to working with others to realize our common vision. As we look to the future, we know that we can dramatically increase quality of life around critical community issues such as obesity, the achievement gap, chronic disease, teen depression, drowning, hunger and family stress. There is a powerful inter-relationship between our focus on nurturing the potential of youth, encouraging healthy lifestyles and helping our neighbors. Our highlighted stories are interchangeable between these three focus areas. Our work in each area contributes to the others. This is our “sweet spot” for maximum community impact. Explore these pages, and you will see our beliefs, how we approach our opportunities and challenges, and our impact in addressing community needs. Most importantly, you will see our dreams for the future. We offer our heartfelt appreciation to all the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, donors, staff and organizations that have helped and contributed along our journey to a stronger, more vital Silicon Valley. Together we are shaping the future. John Baird Chair, YMCA of Silicon Valley Board of Directors Kathy Riggins President and Chief Executive Officer We believe that all children and youth should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential in spirit, mind and body. We’re here to help make that happen. Our Approach • We collaborate with schools and other community organizations. • We provide academic enrichment and support. • We encourage healthy living choices. • We focus on prevention – not intervention. • We connect youth with positive adult role models. Ale x • We incorporate developmental experiences to help kids thrive. cia ren o l F Youth Development Our Story Our Impact Single mother Florencia Alva often felt frustrated and lost. With English as her second language, helping sons Hugo and Alexander with schoolwork was a challenge. Thanks to financial assistance, Florencia joined the Y and enrolled her boys in the Y’s after school program. Now the boys are thriving, making the honor roll, eating healthy and staying active. Florencia credits their academic success and healthy habits to the Y, and says her entire family feels supported and connected. The Y improves the quality of life for more than 98,100 youth each year. “I trust the Y and feel good knowing that my sons are safe and engaged in healthy activities. I especially like the Y’s emphasis on education.” Florencia Alva, mother, Y member and volunteer The Y addresses critical community needs: Achievement Gap We collaborate with schools to help close the achievement gap. • Our after school and child care programs benefited 7,000 youth daily. • The majority of students in our programs raised or maintained their proficiency in math and reading. Childhood Obesity Our youth programs encourage healthy living habits. • 69% of families with kids in after school programs say they are eating healthier and exercising together. • 94% of kids learn skills related to games, sports and activities that promote life-time fitness. Teen Depression and Risky Behaviors • Our youth development initiatives across the community reached 40,000 students, helping to prevent depression and risky behaviors. • We inspired and empowered 1,200 teens through leadership development programs. • Our camping experiences built character, confidence and lasting memories for 27,000 youth. Hug o Our dream for the future Silicon Valley becomes the best place for children to grow up. TOGETHER we can make it happen! We believe that healthy living habits dramatically improve the quality of life for individuals and families. We’re here to teach, encourage and support healthy lifestyles. Our Approach • We teach and encourage physical activity. • We offer nutritional education and support. • We help prevent and support disease and injury. • We build connections and a sense of belonging. • We encourage community involvement. • We offer a wide array of family programming. am ar • We nurture total health of spirit, mind and body. T Healthy Living Our Story Our Impact More than 100 kids with Type 1 diabetes were devastated this summer when they abruptly learned that their camp was canceled–until YMCA of Silicon Valley stepped in. With only three weeks’ advance notice, the Y took the lead and made camp happen. YMCA Campo de los Niños offered these campers a fantastic week-long camping experience in spite of their daily needs to manage their chronic disease. Supported by Stanford Hospital, 75 medical volunteers and counselors, and 61 donors, the Y created lifelong memories for these special campers. The Y improves healthy lifestyles for more than 179,300 members and participants. “I was so excited to go to camp. It’s nice to meet other kids with diabetes, and we all help each other.” Tia Geri, 11-year-old camper “I felt secure knowing that my daughter was in a safe environment with medical staff familiar with her disease. She could just relax and enjoy camp – what a positive experience for her!” Tamar Sofer-Geri, Tia’s mother The Y addresses critical community needs: Obesity • We provided guidance, encouragement and resources to thousands of adults and children to improve their eating habits and activity levels. Drowning • We taught life skills of water safety and swimming to more than 11,000 youth and adults. Chronic Disease • We provided support and improved quality of life for 450 cancer survivors in partnership with Stanford Hospital. Family Stress • We offered family activities, programs and events to help strengthen bonds, enhance communications, and achieve work/life balance. Families played and grew together more than 27,000 times this year. Tia Our dream for the future Silicon Valley becomes one of the healthiest places to live. TOGETHER we can make it happen! We believe that by helping our neighbors, all of our lives are deeply enriched and our community is strengthened. We’re here to work together with you and others to create a stronger, more vital community. Our Approach • We collaborate with agencies and community organizations. • We offer critically needed programs for children and families in need. • We provide financial assistance and program subsidies. • We deliver targeted programs for seniors and specialty groups. • We engage youth and adults as leaders and volunteers. Social Responsibility Social Responsibility Our Story Our Impact Like so many others, Janet Cornejo-Perez’s family struggles to make ends meet. This makes buying healthy food for a family of four difficult. But every Friday, Janet and her classmates leave the Y’s after school program with a bag of healthy food to take home. Janet has shared how important the donated food is to her family. Her mother relies on the fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and rice to supplement their diet. By collaborating with Second Harvest Food Bank, the Y is able to help Janet’s family and countless others enhance their health and well-being. The Y strengthens community by collaborating with more than 200 schools and 150 partner organizations to address issues and needs. “They don’t give us junk food. They give us healthy food that helps us eat better.” Janet, age 10 YMCA after school program at Scott Lane Elementary School “The Y staff are valued collaborators in helping us improve quantity, quality and access to healthy food for families in need.” Cindy McCown, Senior Program Director Second Harvest Food Bank Hunger • In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, we distributed 244,580 pounds of food to children and families in need. • We led a collaborative effort to provide 6,000 children with nutrition programs, healthy living activities and academic enrichment over the summer. Lack of Access to Solutions • We provided $3.8 million of financial assistance to individuals and families in need. • 1,300 youth in our Ys raised $23,550 toward this total. Suicide • We offered a wide variety of programs to ensure youth have the connections and support they need when stress levels are high. More than 25,200 teens participated in Y programs last year. t ne Ja Senior Health and Isolation • We offered a place to stay connected, remain active and improve quality of life for more than 20,200 seniors. Our dream for the future Silicon Valley becomes a stronger, more vital community in every way. TOGETHER we can make it happen! We believe that camping experiences transform lives through discovery, social connections and environmental appreciation. We’re here to create lasting memories and help campers thrive. Our Approach We create life-changing experiences by offering… • Exploration and discovery for educational enrichment • Character-building activities to help kids thrive • A safe, nurturing environment with caring adult role models • An inspiring outdoor setting fostering environmental appreciation YMCA Camp Campbell Tree Top C abi n a arr y Swenson, Phi l Bo y ce rt K ai n ly ol B nd H er b e “We are so proud and honored to have our name associated with the newly renovated YMCA Camp Campbell. We are truly impressed with the beautiful new cabins and the future plans for the amazing swimming pool. We believe that these changes will enrich the lives of so many campers for years to come, making this the best real estate investment we’ll ever make.” ,M In August, we celebrated the YMCA Camp Campbell Ribbon Cutting and Ground Breaking with fun festivities in a spectacular setting. We unveiled the Tree Top Camp and the Swenson Family Lodge, and broke ground on The Valley Foundation Swimming Hole. The Valley Foundation and its chair, Phil Boyce, and Molly and Barry Swenson, were recognized with heart-felt appreciation for their Cornerstone Circle contributions toward renovating camp. Alana and Bob Lee, Major Gift Donors Our Impact Sw en so n Fa mi l y Lo dg e Our year-round overnight camp programs enrich 12,800 youth and their families each year, and help address issues such as achievement gap, obesity, teen depression and risky behaviors. • Outdoor Science Camp provided accredited science curriculum for 5,700 students. • Summer resident camps continued summer learning for 5,000 kids. • Family camps strengthened family relationships for 1,500 individuals. • Leadership programs developed skills and confidence in 600 teens. • Financial assistance enabled 1,140 kids-in-need to experience camp. We believe in the developmental experiences and opportunities that have been proven by research to help kids thrive and become healthy, caring, responsible adults. We’re here to provide those experiences to kids. Project Cornerstone is a community initiative, led by the YMCA of Silicon Valley, to create an environment where all adults support and value children and teenagers so that they thrive. We partner with thousands of adults and hundreds of schools and community organizations to increase the developmental assets of all youth in Silicon Valley. Our Survey In 2011, Project Cornerstone surveyed 38,000 students in more than 200 schools and 25 school districts throughout Santa Clara County. The survey measured developmental assets that young people are experiencing. Our Impact Developmental Assets are the positive experiences, relationships, opportunities and values that young people need to thrive and become healthy, caring and responsible adults. Overall, the results showed significant improvement in the average number of assets reported by youth in Santa Clara County between 2005 and 2011. Research proves that youth with 21 or more assets are more likely to choose healthy activities, succeed in school, and avoid risky behaviors.
