Cliffside Park School 5 “Knowledge is Power” Spring, 2016 2- Five on Five A Message From Mrs. Martinotti Inside Looking Back 2 Inside Our Classrooms 3 Students of the Month 6 Citizens of the Month 7 PTO News 8 It’s hard to believe that winter is behind us and summer is on the horizon as we go through a rather chilly spring! While the temperatures are slow to rise, our students have been steadily climbing toward their year-end targets. As I walk through the halls and into classrooms, I am amazed at the progress so many of our students have made this year. I feel an air of confidence and with that a flurry of excitement as personal and academic goals are being met. As we approach June, it is important to keep in mind that while summer may be a time to slow down due to lazy, hazy days, it is important to keep our students active with their reading, writing, and math skills. I look forward to celebrating our students at our upcoming ceremonies and end-of-the-year activities! Mrs. Martinotti School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 LOOKING BACK AT SPECIAL EVENTS AT SCHOOL 5 While the winter months may have brought chillier temps, our halls were sizzling with activity! School No. 5 Celebrates Literacy! On February 24th we participated World Read Aloud Day! Sponsored by LitWorld, this is a day on which global attention is brought to the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories. Student in School 5 participated in this event in many different ways. Students in Ms. Sanchez’s class skyped with middle school students who read them a story! The week of March 2nd, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday for Read Across America! Many guest readers came to School No. 5 to share some special stories! 2 We had some parents, some members of the community and even Mr. Cupcake! Our students also spent an afternoon as artists! In our Arts and Craftery program, students in grades PK-3 were guided through the steps of creating an undersea masterpiece! We are so proud of their talent! Our next painting session will be on Wednesday, May 18th…we can’t wait to see what our young artists create! School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 A Peek Inside Our Classrooms PK Wrap Around – Mrs. Perez: Students in wrap around Summer is Coming! Ideas to promote learning during the heat! Taking a trip? Start a family travel journal to record memories. And don’t forget to bring along audio books for car trips! Cool off at the Library! Magazines, newspapers, and books galore at your fingertips! Did you know you can borrow CDs and DVDs, too? Check them out with your library card! were involved in learning all about our community. We took a tour of Cliffside Park using Google maps. Students also drew pictures of what they wanted to be when they grow up. They wrote letters to someone they knew. We also started learning about signs of spring. The students made binoculars and came up with their own checklist of signs to use during our “nature walk”. PK Mrs. Rutz: Students in the Pre-K Classes learned about different community helpers that are in our community. They had a chance to see and meet them as well. Many of the classes went to visit the post office, public library, fire department and police department. PK Ms. Fontana: Students in Ms. Fontana’s class participated in an author study, focusing on one of our favorite authors in the class: Mo Willems. We discussed who an author is and what they do. Students practiced print skills by making best friend books after reading My New Friend Is So Fun! PK Ms. Sanchez: Students in Pre-K learned about various community helpers and went to visit the post office, library, fire and police departments. Students had the opportunity to mail their very own letters to their loved ones, meet the police chief and see inside of the police station, listen to a story and participate in a craft at the local library and go on a fire truck! PK Ms. Montana: Students in Mrs. Montana’s class enjoyed a unit on community helpers. Students participated in assembling an anchor chart matching community helpers with the tools needed for their jobs. During center play, students dress as police officers, fire fighters, mail carriers, doctors and nurses. We have also been participating in several field trips within the community with Miss Fontana’s class to the post office, fire and police department and library. PK Ms. Hompesch: Students in Miss Hompesch’s class enjoyed participating in a number of interactive Smartboard activities. Many of these activities included topics relating to spring, which helped them learn about many of the changes we see during this time of year. They enjoyed learning about things such as weather and animals, while also experiencing how to use technology. PK Ms. Clinton: Students in Ms. Clinton’s class learned about different community helpers that have jobs in our community. They then dressed up as the community helper they would most like to be and created a class book with their photos. PK Ms. Viviani: Students in Ms. Viviani’s class learned about different ways to take care of the Earth for Earth Day. They sorted items that are trash and items that can be recycled. They also created maracas by reusing plastic water bottles. One of the fun center activities was Alphabet Trash, where students used grabbers to pick up alphabet litter! 3 School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 Continued from page 3 PK Mrs. Perez: Celebrating Earth Day students in Mrs. Perez’s class made their own recycling home sorting game. Students recycled old shopping bags and old file folders into a wonderful sorting game. In the game they have the abilities to sort recycling items in different categories. The categories are bottles, paper, cardboard, and tin. Games were differentiated between levels of learning. Some students had a simplified matching game and others had a more advanced game with different items to categorize. Grade 1 Ms. Berta: Students in both First Grades have begun a Community unit where they are learning all about our wonderful town of Cliffside Park. They will create a community brochure including the history of our town, town leaders, restaurants and businesses, and why they love living in Cliffside Park. To culminate the unit, students will take a walking tour of Cliffside Park visiting the places in their brochures. Grade 1 Ms. Corcoran: Students in both First Grades created a hardcover, nonfiction class book. They visited the Cliffside Park Library to conduct their research. They also have been participating in a Flat Stanley Unit. Students mailed letters and a Flat Stanley to family members all over the world. Grade 2 Mrs. Vento: Students in both second grades are learning about cultures around the world in Social Studies. During this unit students will create a poster filled with information about their culture. It will include their countries flag, foods, costumes, music, etc. Students had the opportunity to sing a song or dance to music from their culture. They loved seeing the different kinds of dances. This is a really fun unit for second grade and it gives them an opportunity to learn more about their background. Grade 2 Mrs. Orso: Students in both second grades completed nonfiction books and we celebrated by reading to other grades. We just started the letter writing unit which is our favorite! We celebrated Earth Day by thinking of ways that we can help our planet. We looked at photos of litter and pollution on the Smartboard and watched what happens during oil spills. Our students learned many ways to conserve energy. They promised not to litter and to always recycle. 4 We Are Turning 90! On May 26, 1926, the borough of Cliffside Park gathered on Day Avenue for the cornerstone to School No. 5 to be laid! In just a few short weeks we will gather again to celebrate 90 years of knowledge, friendships, and wonderful memories! Join us on Saturday, June 4th from 12:00-4:00 as we Celebrate our 90th Birthday! School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 Continued from page 4 Grade 3 Mrs. Maurizio & Ms. Robles: Students in both third grades studied the solar system and all the planets. Each student had the chance to research one of the planets and create a model/poster of their planet. The third grade finished their nonfiction Writing unit and read to a few of the classes. A few topics ranged from animals, WWE wrestlers, Ocean life and science experiments. Grade 4 Mr. Nichols: Students in 4th Grade are currently studying hurricanes and tornadoes. So far 4th graders have created hurricanes though the use of water, food coloring, and a spoon. This lab showed the students first hand what the eye of a hurricane looks like. Now the unit of study has now switched to tornadoes so the class will be writing in the future a newspaper article about a tornado. Grade 5 Ms. Scordo: Students in Ms. Scordo’s class created and published a class book highlighting our aspirations for our futures and thought about possible career opportunities as well as long term goals. We’ve also finished our memoirs and biographies in Writing, as we’re now working hard to create our last book for the year in multi-genre. Grade 6 Ms. LaRose: The 6th Grade loves research! After reading 2 different accounts of the sinking of the R.M.S Titanic and a passage on the attack of the R.M.S. Lusitania, students found manifests of passenger and survival lists, displaying their information on two ship models. As a follow-up to reading the novel, The Breadwinner. The class worked in teams to produce movie trailers from their favorite parts of the story. Students began planting Spring Gardens of vegetables and flowers with the hopes of enjoying a home-grown salad. Soon they will begin a cross-curricular unit of Holocaust Studies. Band Mr. DiLisio: We have been practicing for our Band Spring Concert for 5th & 6th Grades Thursday May 12th. Art Mrs. Burge: 5th grade students made radial symmetric mandalas, 6th grade drew animals from Africa and made a border inspired by the Ndebele Tribe. Gifted and Talented Mrs. Burge: Students in grades 4-6 researched and wrote a one page paper on philanthropy and an organization or cause that is important to them. They also had to support their cause either by giving their time, talent, or treasure intended for the common good. (Make ribbons for cancer research, homemade toys for animals, bracelets for St. Jude’s children, etc) Students at School No. 5 show their pride and dedication to our school motto, “Knowledge is Power.” 5 School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 Students of the Month 6 December January February OLIVIA WOODS BRANDON CHITIC GABRIELA DUFFY THAIS LOH DAVID CRUZ SINCUIR HAILEY SILVA MATHEO VASQUEZ RICARDO BONILLA JOSHUA DRAGONA TYLER ROSA NYALEE GARCIA ANYELI SOSA EZEQUIAS MORALES GAVYN CARABALLO ERIK LOSHE KEVIN MATIAS JOANNA PEREZ RAMADAN RAMADAN JACQUELINE PEREZ PRISCILLA HERRERA LUIS MOTA STELLA VEERASAMI PAISLEY RUSSO NALA TAVANA JADZIA ROJAS TAE KYU RYU RANDY TOMAS JEREMY FAGUA CALEB TREVINO JUSTIN FIGUEROA BALIAN SANABRIA-MORALES JACKSON FILHO ALISON HERNANDEZ ISABELLA MARTINEZ RONNELL AVILA LEVI SHERRY BRANDON RENTEZELAS LINDRIT BRUKA JORDAN JURIC PRISCILA SARAVIA JANA HERNANDEZ DAREEN ABID DANEL XON VALDEZ IRIS CANA ESQUIT DEREK SUAZO NILSON ESTRADA RYAN AOKI RICARDO BONILLA SKYLAR VACCARO STEVE RIVAS MOSES CORDOBA-SOUSA ASHLYN ESTRADA XIMENA MORENO LILIANA CHITAY ALEXIS ALATISE JADEN PENA MADISON DYSON WILBUR MORALES GRACE YHLEN MICHAEL PARLIER March April KAYLEN ALVAREZ JUSTIN JOERG MONALISA MANJANI JAYDEN ROSA LEVI QUEVEDO TYLER ROSA MIA ROTH VICTOR GONZALEZ CHRISTINA CHAMOUN LUCAS TANG SELAH HAN YOUSSEF CHAMOUN VESA SHALA SOLEI BUCHANAN CHLOE CARRAWAY VICTORIA SEQUEIRA JOHAN SOTO MARIA FILHO JADEN COLON ALEX ESTRADA ANDREA IZQUIERDO ALIYAH SANCHEZ HUMEYRA COSKUN JORDI SALAMANCA JORDAN MARCELLE TIFFANY WOLBURG MIA ROTH VICTOR GONZALEZ OKANNOR TUMUX MATTHEW RIZZO AXEL PERREIRA MELANIE ORTIZ AURORA ALVAREZ-ROCA AVRAHAM OVIEDO ISRAEL OVIEDO VERONICA CORREA LUIS RAMOS VALENTINA VILLARREAL KARMA BUCHANAN MARIA SANTIAGO School No. 5 Newsletter Spring 2016 Citizens of the Month December January February KAYLEN DUBON DECLAN O’DONNELL GABRIELA DUFFY THAIS LOH MIA CHAOUM ZULY ATZ JOCELYN RIVERA MATHEO VASQUEZ VICTOR GONZALEZ LUCAS TANG NYALEE GARCIA IKENNA IRIAKA ALEX POGREBINSKIU ANTHONY FILHO ISIAH RODRIGUEZ BILGE BALCI ADAM OMAR RAMADAN RAMADAN TEELA COLLENDER GARWIN MOTA JACQUELINE HERNANDEZ CORTES MANUEL DE LEON ORELLANA MARJORIE ESTRADA NALA TAVANA NINA BRUSCO OUDAI ABUBAKER ALHUTMANY RANDY TOMAS LEHO LEE CHRISTINA CHAMOUN SADEEL ABUELHIJA BALIAN SANABRIA-MORALES CARINA GARCIA ERICK SOTO JOANNA GONZALEZ SAHIR BAKSH BRANDON VILLA JOLEEN KATTOURA MADELINE MOLINA GRACE YHLEN PAOLA SARAVIA LEYLA PEREZ SKYLAR VACCARO LEEZA MERZLENKO IVAN LU SHAILI DUARTE SUBRAHMANYAM GOPARAJU SHARON ARMIRA FRANKLYN CONTRERAS NOLAN O’DONOVAN TYLER ROSA MOSES CORDOBA-SOUSA SELEN SARI YAMIM MEREIROS ASHLEY OSORIO GABRIELLA MORALES KEVYON FOSTER ALEYAH GARCIA EDWIN ELIAS SARA RALIOS MATEO MEJIA March ESVIN ROCA EMELY PABLO CELESTE PEREZ JEREMY MARROQUIN KYLIE INOA RAPHAEL ANICETO RYAN AOKI LEHO LEE CALEB TREVINO JOSEPH ALVAREZGILDERSLEEVE SELAH HAN ANYELI SOSA ZAIN ZAKZOUK ZEHRA ATILA RIHANNA ROJAS NATALI ESTRADA XIOMARA VASQUEZ KESSA FOSTER JULIUS GONZALEZ JORDAN ROMAN April GIOVANNI DEMAIO CAMERON MAHDAVIAN KATE CHUN JORDI SALAMANCA ELLA YOON NAOKI TAKEDA MATHEO VASQUEZ JEREMY FAGUA JOCELYN RIVERA ISAAC AHN BALIAN SANABRIA-MORALES JOSE ORTEGA AYAN RIZWAN CLAIRE FALERO JAYDEN DRONE MARITA CHAMOUN LIZBETH SUAZO EMILY CRUZ ANNA NAKOUSSOV AUSTIN CORDOBA 7 PTO NEWS Thank you to our PTO for all the time and hard work in supporting School 5!
