MN Fishing (Walleye/Northern) Opener: May 9
2nd Street Stage: Every Thursday, June 18 - August 20
Head to downtown Park Rapids for 2nd Street
Stage, a free summer music series, featuring
live music, a beer garden, kids activities and
more. The series will run Thursdays from 6
to 8 p.m. (most nights) on 2nd Street between Main Avenue and
Highway 71. For the 2015 schedule, go to www.parkrapids.com
Park Rapids Bull Ride: July 2-4
The greatest show on dirt! The Upper
Midwest’s largest Professional Bull Riding
event returns Thursday through Saturday
with an all-star cast of the greatest bull riders
and bucking bulls in the world. The PBR pits
a tough, wiry cowboy on the back of a hulking 2,000-pound bull
to see if he can ride the beast for an eternal 8 seconds. Top stock
contractors provide the bucking stock including world champion
bulls. Kids’ sheep riding and freestyle cowboy poker also
entertain spectators.
Crazy Days & Downtown Dash: July 23-24
Local merchants host sidewalk sales both
days! Don’t miss the Downtown Dash Road
Race - 5K run and 1 mile walk/run down
Main Ave on Thursday, July 23.
23rd Annual Field Days: August 1-2
The Park Rapids Antique Tractor and
Engine Club’s annual event takes place
the first Saturday and Sunday in August.
Demonstrations of combining, threshing,
tractor plowing, shingle making, gas engines, lath making, a
snow fence making machine and a working sawmill will take
place. Visitors also will enjoy displays of horse-related machinery
and model tractors, music, a petting zoo, sifting through
collectibles, an ice cream stand and other food. Tractor parades
and a Saturday tractor pull are highlights and youngsters can sign
up for a pedal tractor pull or pinewood tractor derby.

2015 EVENTS & FESTIVALS
4th of July Celebration: July 4
From dawn to dusk, family friendly events
honor Independence Day. In the morning,
runners and walkers gather at Heartland
Park for the Firecracker Foot Race. Lake
associations organize and launch boat parades and picnics
celebrating life at the lake. Pie lovers head to Beagle Books’
Pie Baking Contest, a fundraiser for the public library. A traditional
4th of July Parade on Main Street, Park Rapids Area Community
Band’s Pre-fireworks Concert at Red Bridge Park and Rotary Club
fireworks display over Fish Hook River round out the day.
Bite of Park Rapids: July 12
Take a bite from our restaurants, hear live
music, bring the kids to an inflatables park,
participate in food races and contests for
prizes and enjoy our beer garden.
Two stages will host activities and local musicians, as well as
well-known area bands.

Headwaters 100 Bike Ride: September 26
Fall is a great time to see the Lakes Area. Itascatur puts on this
ride in September each year as a 45, 75 or 100 mile bicycle

ride with over 650 riders. There are multiple stops throughout
the completely paved route. The casual ride sees riders bring everything from road
bikes to mountain bikes to crossovers, bike trailers hauling gear or children and more.

Art Leap 2015: September 26-27
Enjoy the fall colors on a driving tour of artists’ studios and
other cultural destinations throughout our mysterious Jack Pine
woods. Meet artists and artisans in their studios and workshops.
Enjoy live performances of music. Maps are available at the
Visitor Center and the event is free to the public.

Light U style. The entire community gathers on the wide street of Main

to witness the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. A live
nativity, visit from Santa Claus and singing carols make the evening
complete. There is also a joyful evening to be had wandering through the shops on
Main, sampling holiday nibbles and enjoying shopping discounts for the Yuletide Sampler.
Heartland 106 Snowmobile Race: January 31 - February 1
USXC is a new snowmobile cross-country racing circuit that
provides a series of terrain races throughout the Midwest.

The Heartland 106 is the only woods race in the 6-8 event

circuit. The goal of USXC is to continue the tradition of racer-friendly events at many
classic cross-country venues, giving drivers, crews and fans the best possible experience.

American Legion Ice Fishing Contest: February 7
The first Saturday in February always promises to be a great
ICE FISHING CONTEST day on the ice for the American Legion Community Fishing
Contest on Fish Hook Lake. Thousands of fishing enthusiasts
enjoy great food, dancing and an awards presentation for a weekend of fun. The
contest offers one of the largest purses in Minnesota with over $110,000 in cash and prizes.
Hubbard Sleigh Festival: February 22
An unforgettable winter day in the scenic small town of
Hubbard. Enjoy a parade of sleighs and horse drawn vehicles;
snow sculpture contest; free sleigh rides; kids activities; dog sled
rides; steaming hot chocolate, pioneer camp site and a cozy
campfire in front of the Hubbard Community Center. This nostalgic trip into yesteryear
will create wonderful memories for you and your family and guests.

The Legend of
THE LOON’S SONG
Long, long ago there was a Great
Warrior of near-god stature who
needed a messenger he could send
between the world of gods and the
world of men. Looking over the lake,
the Great Warrior’s eyes fell upon the
Loon. He called to the loon, and
asked if the Loon would act as such
a messenger.
The Loon was honored, and agreed.
“But how will I call for you?” he
asked. The Great Warrior stopped
and thought for a moment. Then he
said, “I will give you a song to sing,
a special song so that I will know it is
you who calls and not my enemy.”
The Loon agreed and the Warrior taught
the Loon his song as he sings it now.
As it happened, though, the Great
Warrior soon after became
displeased with the people he had
created on earth and he chose to
leave them. The Warrior turned his
back on the people and walked away.
The Loon called after the Great Warrior
trying to convince him to return.
But the Great Warrior did not return.
And the Loon calls to him still.
