April disbursements typically represent sales taxes collected by merchants in January and paid to the state in February. Pekin’s sales tax disbursements received from the state for the last 3 months were 15.2% greater than the same three months a year ago. The other three large communities on the east side of the Illinois River also showed positive growth in sales tax disbursements received in April. Compared to April of 2012: Morton (+6.7%), East Peoria (+6.6%), and Washington (+8.0%) For the 12-months ending in April, all four communities showed an increase in sales tax receipts from the state, compared to the same 12-months a year ago: Pekin (+11.5%), East Peoria (+5.2%), Washington (+3.9%), and, Morton (+2.8%). The number of residential units sold in Pekin in the first three months of the year was 14.3% greater than the sales in the first three months of 2012. The other large Tazewell County communities had mixed residential sales unit results in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2012: East Peoria (+26.4%), Washington (-9.7%) and Morton (-17.9%). The average sales price of a Pekin residential unit in the first quarter of the year was $107,671, which is up 2.1% from $105,489 - the average price for the same period in 2012. The year-to-date average sales price of residential units in the other large Tazewell communities was mixed compared to 2012: East Peoria (+12.5%), Washington (-0.4%), and Morton (-13.5%). The unemployment rate in Pekin rose to 11.9% in February, which is up from 10.3% in February of 2012. The February unemployment rate in the Peoria region stood at 10.4%, up from the February of 2012 rate of 9.0%. The number of people employed in Pekin in February was 15,522 — the lowest number since February of 2011. Nationally, nonfarm payroll employment edged up in March (+88,000), and the unemployment rate was little changed at 7.6%. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) decreased 0.2 percent in March. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.5% before seasonal adjustment. 3 3 4 RECENT EVENTS Chamber Elects New Leadership The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual membership meeting on April 22nd at the Pekin Country Club. Over 200 attendees representing 52 businesses and organizations enjoyed the reception and short business meeting, followed by entertainment by the PCHS Noteables. Dennison Chevrolet Hosts Business After Hours Ray Dennison Chevrolet hosted the April Business After Hours for chamber members and their guests. Ray, John and Brian greeted their guests and showed them the recently remodeled showroom. Four members of the Board of Directors completed their terms and were recognized for their service. The retiring members were: Daryl Dagit, Savant Capital Management; Paula Davis, Pekin Community High School District 303; and, Paul Scherer, Heartland Bank & Trust. Also recognized was Skip Schermerhorn, Herget Bank, who completed his service on the board as Past President. Newly elected board members were introduced. They are Tracy Blanchard, Kroger;Larry Crouch, Monge Crouch & Mahoney; Chad Gambetti, Pekin Trophy House & Engraved Gifts; Gary Jepson, Pekin Hospital; and, Frank Shearer, Covenant Heating & Air Conditioning. The chamber membership elected these new directors in March. The newly seated board then elected officers for the coming year. They are: President, Tom Hornstein, Excalibur Seasoning Company; President Elect, Aindrea Balagna, Wolf Tesar and Company; Vice President, Gregg Ratliff; Treasurer, John Franks III, Pekin-Peoria Yellow Checker Cab; and, Past President, Drew Leman, Puttin’ on Pekin Recap Nearly 100 chamber members attended the April 12th Puttin' On Pekin breakfast held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Pekin Residents only– IDs will be checked. 5 5 6 Member Announcements Pekin Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Pekin Hospital is pleased to offer an adult diabetes education workshop on May 13, 14, and 15. The series of three classes will be held from 2 – 5 p.m. in the 4 South Education Classroom at Pekin Hospital. Beyond Jobs is a free program that helps Central Illinois women improve their job skills and find employment (or better-paying jobs). Funded by a grant from the Walmart Foundation and administered by Goodwill of Central Illinois, it connects qualified women and respected employers—building brighter futures for both. The Pekin Hospital League’s 22nd Annual Golf Classic will be held Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Pekin Country Club. Entry deadline is April 26, 2013. For more information, call (309) 353-0803. Make plans to attend Dragon Pride on May 1st from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in Hawkins Gym in Pekin Community High School. Dragon Pride is the annual exhibition for PCHS students to display their class projects from all academic areas. The event is open to the public and is an open house format so visitors are free to explore the exhibits at their own pace. The Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a non-profit comprehensive medical rehabilitation center, is pleased to announce Deb Adlington as the new Director of Marketing and Business Development.
