Alaska Native peoples for
uncountable years prized abundant
salmon runs to the creek at the
center of our town. Ketchikan is
adapted from the Native name for
this stream. The City of Ketchikan
was incorporated in 1900 by settlers
who saw the value of the natural
resources of the area.

K
etchikan was
cited a few
years ago as one of
America’s Top 100
Small Arts
Communities.
Galleries and
public art
display our appreciation of creative
endeavors and
enrich this unique
community for
residents and
visitors alike.
• Native artists, some internationally
known, work in traditional forms
from carving to weaving. Contemporary artists produce amazing work
in media from acrylic to sculpture,
ceramics to watercolor.
• Most local galleries are owned and
operated by resident artists.
• Art exhibits, festivals and special
events occur each year. The artistic
highlight of summer is the Blueberry Arts Festival the first weekend of August, with a dazzling
array of artwork and public events.
Residents turn on in the off-season
with the Jazz and Cabaret Festival
and the Wearable Art Show.
We’re big on public art. Terry Pyles’ piling caps at Salmon
Landing Market render sea creatures in tile. David Rubin’s
“The Rock” on Berth 2 depicts Alaska Natives and pioneers.

Misty Fjords
& TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST
M
isty Fjords National Monument’s deep canals and inlets were carved
by glaciers thousands of years ago and their granite grandeur leads
some to call this place the Yosemite of the North.
The U.S. Forest Service manages the
monument—much of it as wilderness.
The near edge of the 2.3 million-acre
area is 40 miles south of Ketchikan.
Misty Fjords provides outstanding
recreational opportunities and wildlife
habitat. The monument is accessible
by floatplane or boat from Ketchikan.
Mountain goats grazing in numbers on alpine greenery
are commonly observed by flightseeing passengers.
Snowfields melting in granite bowls provide spectacular scenes. For longer, up-close experiences, outfitters
conduct multi-day stays and guided kayak tours.

MISTY FJORDS & TONGASS NATIONAL FOREST
K
etchikan is in the heart of 17 million-acre Tongass
National Forest, the largest in the United States.
This temperate rain forest is integral
to the lifestyle of Southeast Alaska and
always has been. It’s habitat for a rich
abundance of plants, animals and birds.
From the earliest habitation by Northwest Coast tribes, the forest and sea
provided for every necessity. The forest
in modern times has provided wood
for industry and fascinating country for
visitors.
It’s a vast place: you can travel the 500
miles from Ketchikan to Yakutat and
never leave Tongass National Forest.
Around Ketchikan, you’re visiting
Tongass National Forest—whether you
know it or not—when you cruise along
its shores, hike local trails, fly into a
remote lake or camp and picnic at a
recreation area.
As you plan your visit, it will be apparent that the Tongass plays a large role
in much of what you will see and do in
Southeast Alaska.
For more information:
Tongass National Forest
www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass
Clear streams flowing out of Tongass National
Forest’s mountains are habitat for salmon and
opportunity for fishers. The nation’s largest
national forest provides recreational options from
sea to peaks. Wilderness areas welcome the
adventurous. Well-maintained trails invite
exploration. Remote cabins welcome those who like
to settle in and soak up nature. If you plan more
than a casual visit to the forest, plan carefully and
outfit your party for changeable, challenging
conditions. Be mindful that bears may be feeding
along salmon streams near the ocean. Local guides
and merchants can provide advice and provisions
for an unforgettable backcountry experience.

Native Culture
T
he heritage
of Northwest
Coast tribes is
integral to our
lifestyle. Twenty
residents in every
hundred around
Ketchikan trace
their heritage to
the Tlingit, Haida
and Tsimshian
tribes of Alaska.
The world’s largest
collection of
totem poles is
found here, and
you can meet the
artists and teachers
whose work keeps
the culture vital.
• Saxman Native Village and
Totem Bight State Park display poles and clan houses.
The two totem parks also feature scheduled performances
of Native dancers.
• Totem Heritage Center is a
federal historic site housing
ancient poles retrieved from
abandoned villages. The
center has instructed students
in traditional Northwest
Coast design and Native art
since the 1970s.
• Artisans at Saxman’s carving
center work on contemporary
totem poles and invite you to
get close.
• Southeast Alaska Discovery
Center features a replica of
a summer fish camp and a
display depicting traditional
Alaska Native life.
• Tongass Historical Museum
displays ancient tools and
implements.
The work of master carver Nathan Jackson is in private collections and museums from Ketchikan to Berlin and you can
see numerous pieces around our community. (The “Art Lives Here” book provides handy maps for many artists’ public
works.) Totem parks in Saxman and at Totem Bight State Park display nearly a century of carving. Local carvers can be
seen at work in carving sheds. Totem Heritage Center’s collection of poles from village sites and its interpretive
materials open up the historical book. Traditional regalia, such as woven hats and button robes, is seen in
scheduled dance performances at totem parks.

PACKING FOR SOUTHEAST ALASKA
Pack casual, comfortable clothing. We’re
not sticklers about fashion up here. It’s all
about suiting clothes to the activity.
• Lightweight shirts layer under sweaters and jackets; light wool and polyester fleece are good.
• Pants and shorts, a water-resistant coat
with a hood, and sturdy, waterproof
shoes best fit our changeable climate.
• You may want lightweight gloves and
raingear for hikes or saltwater excursions. Sunglasses and sunscreen are
recommended, especially if you’ll be
on the water.
• If you’re prone to motion sickness, see
a physician before your trip.

& ENTERTAINMENT
S
almon, halibut, crab, shrimp, oysters and clams—often caught and
served on the same day—are on the menus at local eateries. Hearty
steaks, pizza, fast foods and country-style breakfasts are also served.
Ethnic fare ranges from Mexican and Thai to local favorites introduced by
immigrants from the Philippines.
Live entertainment at lounges, Native
dance performances, plays, audiovisual
presentations and arts events provides
multiple options during your visit.
Substitute seafood in traditional fare
such as omelets and sandwiches. Try
seafood chowders, fish tacos, salmon
burgers or jerky, and the freshest fish
and chips available anywhere. Sushi
and other Asian culinary delights are
available at several eateries in this
historic Pacific Rim port.
Your favorite beverages are available,
whether you crave a latte made with
Alaskan-roasted coffee or want to try
an Alaskan brew.
More and more excursions based in
Ketchikan are featuring dining on
their tours.

Dungeness crabs fresh from the sea are local favorites available at most restaurants. From hotel dining rooms to lodges,
from small local restaurants to take-out joints, seafood is fresh and featured. To find live entertainment, check the web
sites of Ketchikan’s arts council and community theatre. In July, First City Players offers a weekend crab feed and show;
“Fish Pirate’s Daughter” is a comic musical melodrama loosely based on Ketchikan’s exotic history.

est of Ketchikan lies the third-largest island in the United States. Prince of
Wales Island is home to several thousand residents in communities with populations from 50 to 1,500. The island is a prime destination for sportfishing enthusiasts and provides outstanding opportunities for camping, hunting and hiking.
Totem poles and other Native Alaskan artwork are featured in several towns.
• El Capitan and Cavern Lake caves are
managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
They are excellent examples of the
massive cave and karst landscapes in
Southeast Alaska.
• Alaska Native cultures and totem
pole collections can be viewed in
several Prince of Wales Island communities.
• Daily transportation between Ket-
chikan and Prince of Wales Island
is provided by the Inter-Island Ferry
Authority. IFA operates from ports in
Ketchikan and in Hollis on the western side of Prince of Wales Island.
• Rainforest Islands Ferry service is
scheduled to open in 2013, connecting Coffman Cove on Prince of Wales
Island to Ketchikan and Wrangell.
