RightsCatalog2014 from Mexico he Mexican publishing industry has experienced a continuous growth during the last few years. Proof of this are the number of New Horizons Awards given to various Mexican publishers at the Bologna Book Fair. In 2008, the National Chamber for the Mexican Publishing Industry (caniem) set up the Children and Young Adult’s Book Commission. It is composed of approximately 20 publishing houses working in coordination towards the promotion of authors and illustrators. This catalog includes a brief selection of the backlists of various publishing houses in Mexico. It aims to introduce the works by participating publishers which we consider most suitable for the sale of foreign rights. One series of children titles, for instance, looked at traditional stories and artistic expressions of Mexican Indian groups, that have given us a better understanding of who we are, how our country is Contact: Teresa vergara artesdemexico@artesdemexico.com Gabriela Olmos horizontedepalabras@artesdemexico.com Website: www.artesdemexico.com perceived, and how this perception has influenced our own imagination. Of equal importance is our series on poetry and art. We have published them absolutely conviced that children´s renders on these topics are much deeper than ours. In each of these issues, the power of imagination has guided our approach to those expressions whose beauty bewitches us. 5 Artes de México Mexican Rights Sale Artistic and educational books for children and young people Soñé… canto contra la violencia I Had a Dream: A Song against Violence Animalitos endemoniados en la tierra de los hñäñhu Gabriela Olmos In this day and age, when violence has turned the lives of many Mexican children into a nightmare, Artes de México asks them to use the best defense of all: their imaginations. Huichol shaman José Benítez Sánchez tells us these stories in his yarn paintings, which Gabriela Olmos translates into words so we can all take part in these adventures. Mexico’s conception of death is an atypical one, and so are the traditions that coalesce around it. Literally, calaveras are popular rhymes that are part of the folklore related to the celebration of the Day of the Dead. These poems about death are picaresque descriptions of the Grim Reaper’s wanderings through the world of men, and use irony to point out the qualities and defects of our friend the “pale rider.” Gabriela Olmos is a Mexican writer and editor who, among other things draws on oral tradition to write childen’s stories. She was the Mexican candidate for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2009. Her books include I Dreamt… A Book about Hope, Con los ojos cerrados. Sueños de los niños indígenas [With Your Eyes Closed: Indigenous Children’s Dreams], Pintores mexicanos de la A a la Z [Mexican Painters from A to Z], and El juego de las miradas [Eye Play: Let’s Discover Art]. Eduardo Bustos is a teacher, writer and musician, which is why his books always feature creative poetry and reference traditional Mexican music. José Benítez Sánchez was a Huichol shaman internationally renowned for his yarn paintings representing Huichol cosmogony. In 2003, he received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes for his artwork, in the field of Folk Art and Traditions.
