Service members need to enroll PROMPTLY and do it NOW by following these steps: • Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge. Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA Healthcare at any time in the future. • A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the process becomes more difficult. • If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/ discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy of your DD-214, and two forms of picture identification. • Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a regular, reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to be noted in your medical records. • Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. But by the afternoon of Friday, November 12, we already had a couple of dozen campers showing up at the Tumbleweed in Eloy, including a couple from Las Vegas. As it turned out, although the cold weather scared off some of the fair weather riders, attendance was a bit over last year’s. And despite the chill, we still had a good time. Members of the local Legion Riders showed up early Friday afternoon and were very helpful in getting everything set up for the weekend and the 31 Run. They stayed with us helping out both nights and were there late Saturday to accept our cash donation to “Operation Wounded Warrior”. Special thanks to Palmer and his volunteer crew. It was a bit chilly Friday night but “Fools Life” managed to heat things up with their rock n’ roll show from 7pm to midnight. The night’s festivities included the 21st birthday party and first biker event for “Karaoke Dawn’s” daughter Jessica. She somehow managed to survive the night and even joined us for her first Bike Run Saturday morning. Saturday’s 3 stop 31 Run had beautiful riding weather, but my wife Schadee and her friend Casey opted out. Instead, they chose to go jump out of a perfectly good airplane and fall to earth at speeds guaranteed to cause an abrupt stop. But they survived and met up with us at the 3rd stop. Small groups of riders started leaving the Tumbleweed around 9am with a large group of 30 leaving at 10:30 after 30 minutes of trying to jump start a bike that “someone” had left the ignition on all night. Everyone at the 3 run stops was friendly and appreciative of our business. Thanks to The Lounge in Arizona City, the Silver Bullet in Casa Grande, and the Gallopin’ Goose in Coolidge for their hospitality. For those who have never participated in a 31 Run, it’s like 21 but the magic number is 31. With just 3 stops, those on the Run in the morning can also participate in the Bike Rodeo that afternoon. And in consideration of those too hung over to ride the 31 Run, we let them stay at camp and draw all 3 cards there. When we got back to the Tumbleweed the bands were getting set up and the Bike Rodeo soon got under way. I don’t know who won what, but I do know that I probably won’t embarrass myself like that again. Not for awhile anyway. The “Tall Paul Band” from Tucson took the stage at 4 and really entertained us up to 8pm. As “Tall Paul” broke down their stuff and “Cell Phone Cowboys” were setting up for their 9pm show we were entertained with a lingerie show by Wind, Leather and Lace from Tucson. It was warmer than Friday night so the lingerie show was held on the back patio. The models were hesitant to come out at first because local PD was in the audience. I went and spoke with the senior officer and told him that we were going to have a lingerie show and he said he knew; that’s why he was there. I told him that it might be a bit racy, with really skimpy see-through outfits and he said “it’s all good”. After the models entertained everyone, they went out front to have their pictures taken with the local PD. Brother Seamus and the “Cell Phone Cowboys” took the stage around 9pm and rocked until there was no one left standing. After the show Seamus and his girlfriend Tiffany joined us in the campground as we sat around the fire and mellowed out while recapping some of the weekend’s highlights and some low lights too. Any party you survive is good, but the ones that leave you with cool stories to tell for months are the best. Sunday morning was a bit of a hangover but the Tumbleweed was ready with coffee, breakfast burritos, and biscuits & gravy to help ward off the evil demons from Saturday night. All of the talk over coffee and Bloody Mary’s was about next year’s “NO Passport Required”. A Very Special Thanks to Marla & Bill for allowing us to hold the event at the Tumbleweed in Eloy, and inviting us back for 2011. The weather couldn’t have been any better. And like always, The Brotherhood of Blues left us wanting for nothing. This was my first year to camp alone; well me and my 4 legged date, Spanky. We had a great time. The bike games made my face hurt from smiling and laughing. They were without a doubt entertaining. Unfortunately I was having a little too much fun to catch all the winners names, but congratulations to all the winners. You guys went to all lengths to entertain us, and did a great job at it. Margie F HOME AZ Rider 13 A Different Christmas Poem By Michael Marks, December 2000 The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, “What are you doing?” I asked without old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. fear, “Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!” For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts. To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light Then he sighed and he said, “Its really all right, I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.” “It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December,” Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.” My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘Nam, And now it is my turn and so, here I am. I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile. Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue... an American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house, and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother, Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall. “So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright, Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.” “But isn’t there something I can do, at the least, “Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you’ve done, For being away from your wife and your son.” Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, “Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.” AZ Rider Motorcycle News December 2010 HOME 14 Run Calendar AZ Rider on web, click title above for more calendar entries and event details Every Thursday: Evil Twin Custom Cycles hosts Bike Nite 6-10pm @ NEW LOCATION -- El Dorado Bar & Grill 8708 E.
