Beacon Award Priestley college Art and Design nominated for prestigious award 01 The Art and Design Department received excellent news in September, they had been shortlisted for the prestigious National Beacon Award. The feedback was that the Pulse of the City Liverpool project, undertaken by vocational students stood out as an excellent example of good practice and as an innovative exciting application. 01 Summer Show 2006 Priestley’s highly successful, ever expanding Art & Design department put on another stunning end of year Exhibition in July, officially opened by The Mayor of Warrington, which celebrated the incredible achievements of students from every area of the art and Design curriculum. Two members of the award committee came to Priestley for the day and spent time talking to students, tutors and viewing examples of the work that was exhibited in the Renew rooms in Liverpool. Their response was very positive and encouraging and the staff all feel hopefull of an endorsement by the awards committee when the winner is announced at the end of November. The academic year was a busy time with a great deal of achievement along the way, so students and staff thought it superb that the Mayor took such a personal interest in the event. Students leave Priestley to pursue a range of degree courses and careers in many aspects of the Creative Arts and the exhibition is an exciting opportunity to celebrate their achievements with guests also including Parents, Teachers, representatives from Industry, and students from local schools as part of the college’s Welcome Day activities. It is a remarkable achievement for the department to receive such a positive endorsement of their work through the shortlist nomination. 02 01 Beacon Award Applicatiion 02 Jack Moores - Urban Repeat 03 Summer Show Website 02 Following the opening ceremony, the Mayor was given a guided tour around the exhibition which was positioned over two separate buildings, including Priestley’s Art and Design block. Here, she was able to speak at great length to the students themselves who were proud and delighted to be able to display their work as part of such a prestigious event. 03 Priestley currently has one of the broadest and most diverse ranges of Art and Design courses available. Represented in the exhibition were: A/S & A2 Art and Design, A/S & A2 3D Design Technology, A/S & A2 Graphic Design, A/S & A2 Textiles, Level 2 and Level 3 Multimedia Design, Level 2 BTEC EDEXCEL First Diploma in Art & Design, Art Foundation Diploma, and Level 3 BTEC National Diplomas in both Art and Design and Graphic Design. The department is also excited to announce that it is expanding its curriculum area by offering AS & A2 Photography from September 2006. The Summer Show 2006 show still, in fact, lives on in the form of a dedicated website at ‘www. priestleygraphics.co.uk/summer’. 01 Mayor meets Graphic Students 02 Mayor meets Art Foundation Students 03 Andrew Jones - Childs Toy 03 BTEC ND GRAPHICS National Diploma in Graphic Design 100% Pass 100% High Grades CASE STUDY OF ONE STUDENT ABIGAIL FREEMAN BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN GRAPHIC DESIGN RESULT: DDD DESTINATION: Hudderfield University, Graphic Design AS 3D Design A2 Textiles 100% Pass 100% A - C Abbie came to Priestley College having completed a successful programme of GCSEs at Woolston High School. She enrolled onto the BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design and also elected to pursue an additional AS in Textiles Design, which has subsequently helped improve her use of visual language and opened her up to using less conventional methods and processes in her design work. She also studied Multimedia Design up to Level 3, where she designed and built a personal website that includes a portfolio of her artwork. Outside of Priestley College she has a very healthy fascination with a wide range of music and a keen interest in the way that recording artists are portrayed visually through a marketing identity. It is to her credit that Abbie sees graphic design as hobby as much as a career path. She is both reliable, diligent as well as an exceptionally talented graphic artist. Abbie was been offered a place on degree courses at Coventry and Derby, but chose to study Graphic Design at Huddersfield University from September 2006. 100% Pass 92% High Grades 100% Pass 77% A - C AVCE L3 Art + Design A2 Graphics 100% Pass 95% A - C A lot of time and dedication was been put into her coming to terms with the procedures and production techniques that have allowed Abbie to produce graphic artwork of real quality for the computer platform and for print. As inferred above, away from the computer, Abbie’s drawing skills and her use of traditional materials and processes were ambitious, experimental, and brilliantly incorporated into all of her assignments. Her investigation into the work of other artists and graphic designers provided her with valuable inspiration in terms of conceptual thinking and a clear benchmark for her expected standard of work in her final outcomes. Abbie, in this second year at Priestley, enrolled herself onto an enrichment course to study Photography during one evening of the week.
