Time once again for our occasional trip around the Internet to pick up tips and
insights from some of our favorite blogs and websites out there in cyberspace
that we like to call, “Stuff You Should Know.” Here at NTS MediaOnline

CEO Mike Henry to the
company’s blog offers deeper
analysis into an announcement
by Ford Motor Company at the
recent Consumer Electronics
Show that the automaker has
opened up their dashboard to
app developers seeking to enable
their app for in-car use. Henry
goes the extra mile to gather insights beyond the CES press releases from
Scott Burnell, Ford’s Global Lead for Business Development and Partner
Management, who offers this advice to all broadcasters: “Go to the link and
create a profile for yourself. You’ll see the program overview, what we’re
looking for, what it requires to work with us, and what is appropriate content.
In addition to your current radio app, Ford invites innovation. Broadcasters
can now create new applications for the vehicle based on these new resources

Two Audio Apps Everyone In Radio Should Have: KIRO/Seattle
Creative Director and Road Kill Creative principal Chris Pendl shares a
post from his blog, Old Radio. New Tricks. “When the iPhone was released
in 2007, this new device combined two things we could only dream of in the
early days of digital audio recording: a microphone and an Internet connection
on the same device. Combined with phone apps like Soundcloud (great for
simple one-touch recording) or Vericoder’s VC Audio Pro (a multi-track
audio editor), you can now record broadcast quality audio from virtually
anywhere. And while it doesn’t quite sound like you’re in front of an expensive
German microphone in an isolation booth, it does sound pretty darn good. Yes,
the idea of recording high quality audio from the sofa sounds exciting, but let’s
look at some practical ways for broadcasters to use this technology.” Read

Don’t Always Follow The Rules: 4 Sales Rules To Break: In a post at her
company’s blog, Involution Digital’s Content and Communications Director
Sara Gabriella thinks that changing times demand re-evaluation of what we
think we know. “Some knowledge stands the test of time, while other long
held beliefs reach their expiration date and must be put out to pasture,” she
writes. Gabriella goes on to debunk four “rules” of sales that she believes no
longer apply in today’s sales world. Number one? “Always talk to a decision
maker. The assistant to the chief not only holds the keys to the castle, but is also
easier to make contact with and can frame a meeting in a way that is positive,
giving you a beneficial edge going in. He or she can pique the boss’ interest
and put in a good word so that you walk in to a receptive audience.” Find out

Learning From An Agency Review: Another good sales tip comes from
veteran consultant John Lund via his regular Lund Letter for clients. “Here’s
a topic for your next one-on-one’s with your sales force,” he writes. “If your
top three accounts (on each AE’s list) asked you what you have done for them,
could you quickly handle the instant review and justify their expenditures with

CBS Sports Radio welcomes new affiliates WCFN/Cincinnati; WXNT/
Indianapolis; WRSO/Orlando and WOZN/Madison. The network
also gets a DC broadcast radio home as CBS pulls the plug on AM 1580
Gov.Biz Radio (WNEW-AM/Washington) this weekend in favor of the
recently launched 24/7 sports programming. The move comes just in time
for Super Bowl Week, during which CBS will offer more than 75 hours of
multi-platform programming from New Orleans, culminating with CBS
Television’s broadcast of the game between the NFC San Francisco 49ers
and AFC Baltimore Ravens … Meanwhile, Cumulus Media Network’s
Mark Levin Show joins the lineup at WFLN/Arcadia, FL and WECZ/
Punxutawney, PA -- home of the most famous Ground Hog in the world -which also adds the syndicated Mike Huckabee Show … Former WLUP/
Chicago PD Bill Klaproth joins RadioMd as Marketing/Social Media
Director. He joins broadcast vets Tim Disa and Tim Disa, Jr. at the
network which is seeking to carve out a nationwide niche as a “talking”
health info source … Suburban Orlando AM WBZW/Apopka, FL adds
the syndicated Malcolm Out Loud Minute … WIOS/Tawas City, MI adds
Talk Media Network’s syndicated Front Lines of Freedom hosted by
Denny Gillem, LTC, US Army (Ret).
Kudos to the gang at KNX/Los Angeles who picked up six Golden Mike’s
at this year’s SoCal Radio Television News Association’s annual awards
dinner. Among the trophies the station took home was “Best Newscast
Over 15 Minutes” that went to the KNX afternoon news team of Diane
Thompson, Jim Thornton, Chris Sedens, Jan Stevens, David Singer
and Greg Habell … The expected departure of Paul Finebaum from
Cumulus Media Sports/Talker WJOX/Birmingham, AL is right on
schedule, as the afternoon host exits following the expiration of his
contract. No official word on where he’s headed, but most believe that -after sitting out a 90 day non-compete -- Finebaum will land at crosstown
Cox Media Group Sports competitor 97.3 The Zone. Meanwhile,
WJOX midday show, The JOX Roundtable makes a move up with Ryan
Brown, Jim Dunaway and Lance Taylor all moving to PM Drive …
Clear Channel Media & Entertainment names Steve Geofferies VP/
Programming for the station’s eight-station Phoenix cluster. The 12-year
company veteran was most recently Regional Programming Manager
for Charlotte and Raleigh … WLW/Cincinnati quietly adds an FM
simulcast on low power translator 94.5 which Clear Channel recently
acquired in a deal with Northern Kentucky University.

a new channel dedicated to stand-up comedy 24/7, featuring a mix of
brand new material and exclusive performances from Comedy Central’s
considerable library. The multi-year deal adds to the satcaster’s lineup of
comedy channels that already includes Laugh USA, Blue Collar Radio,
Jamie Foxx’s The Foxx Hole, George Carlin’s Corner, UCB Radio, Raw
Dog Comedy and more. The new channel is set to debut in Spring 2013.…

your station? An agency review amounts to the existing agency showing their
value, while competing agencies are trying to short-sell what’s been done. It’s
not that different from what other ad execs do when trying to get an advertiser
to drop your station in favor of their station. Be constantly ready for that
question and your competitors will have a much harder time eating away at the
budgets you get from clients. Plus, you’ll have a greater likelihood of gaining
more revenue if the client knows what your stations bring to the party.” Lund

Is Your Whiteboard On Fire? The blog by Mark Ramsey Media namesake,
Mark Ramsey, is always a regular stop on my tours to seek out practical
news you can use and implement today at your station. A recent post by the
researcher and media watcher under the aforementioned headline caught my
eye. “I was on a conference call with a major radio talent recently and he
made a comment that stuck with me: “Our whiteboard is on fire!” On fire with
new initiatives, new brand extensions and new ways to take the over-the-air
product into the real world where it can be experienced in fresh ways -- each
more monetizable than the last. And I thought, “Is your whiteboard on fire?
In a time of diminishing ad budgets for traditional over-the-air spots, are you
spinning ideas and initiatives? Or are you just spinning? Whiteboards don’t
blaze untended in a corner of a conference room. They need kindling, they
need a match, they need fuel, they need a team of people whose job it is to
make and use fire. If you commit to lighting up your whiteboard, your white
