Annual Report - Ohio Association of Foodbanks
Bringing a healthier Ohio into focus State Fiscal Year 2014 Annual Report Friends, supporters, and partners of Ohio’s foodbanks: Hunger is a pervasive reality in Ohio because food is usually the only discretionary part of a low-income household’s budget. Ohioans are making tough choices between affording food and other essentials, like medicine and medical care, housing, utilities, transportation, and more. That’s why we are committed to not only keeping foodbank shelves stocked, but also empowering nonprofits to connect Ohioans in need with other resources. We can make a difference, but we need your help. Will you join us in our mission? Our state-funded food programs provide Ohio-grown fruits and vegetables, protein items, and shelf-stable foods to Ohio’s 12 Feeding America foodbanks. The Ohio Food Program and Agricultural Clearance Program represented about 22 percent of the 186 million pounds of food distributed by Ohio foodbanks. Kasich the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives the Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Department of Administrative Cost 86% Job and Family Services. 7 The Ohio Food Program provided 10.9 million pounds of food, or nine million meals, including nutritious protein items and shelf-stable food. The Agricultural Clearance Program harvested 29.6 million pounds of Ohio-grown fruits and vegetables that would have otherwise gone Unused. In addition to the Ohio Food Program and Agricultural Clearance Program, we operated three summer meals programs for Ohio’s most vulnerable children thanks to Executive Orders made by Governor John R. Kasich. The summer weekend meals program, innovative meal delivery program, and mobile farmers markets for families provided 2.5 million meals to at-risk, underserved Ohio children. 9 A program of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks SINCE 2006, THE OHIO BENEFIT BANK HAS grown from a grassroots program to a STATEWIDE MOVEMENT. THIS YEAR, A NETWORK OF 1,412 SITES AND 5,656 COUNSELORS connected 115,002 household members , , WITH $236 231 678 in potential work support programs and tax credits. THAT’S MORE THAN $1.21 BILLION in potential income enhancements to 596,739 OHIOANS since the program’s inception. We partner with the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and six member foodbanks to implement a statewide outreach program to connect Ohioans to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP, formerly food stamps). We began a pilot project to test implementation of the MyBudgetCoach™ platform, a tool which allows participants to be matched with a coach to help them learn budgeting and hone their financial skills. Personal Budget Coaches receive free training to help clients with reaching their financial goals. We are working hard to expand our services for populations with unique needs. Our network can help veterans complete applications for a variety of education benefits and access important service-related forms. We also have sites with advanced training to complete SSI/SSDI applications. 11 SHARECORPS When our first national service program began in 2006, we had eight AmeriCorps VISTA members. Since then, we have sponsored 1,185 members who have spent 1.4 million hours in service to their communities. Our members have raised $2,737,312 in donations and recruited 40,012 volunteers who have spent 484,945 hours volunteering. Our national service members truly make a difference. This year, our AmeriCorps VISTA members planned or attended 3,366 outreach events and/or presentations, ranging from emergency food distributions to community forums to volunteer orientations. These events and presentations are vital to engaging communities to take ownership in the fight against poverty. Our AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates serve full-time throughout Ohio for eight weeks during the summer months. They strengthen summer meals programs for children, working to increase participation in the federal Summer Food Service Program and implement other pilot programs for at-risk kids. 13 In the first year of implementation of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act we operated Ohio’s largest federal navigator program. Our consortium of local and regional partners placed over 70 navigators to assist with enrollment in health care coverage. We made over 12 million impressions through media & participated in over 1,200 enrollment events, helping 11,000 Ohioans enroll in private insurance or Medicaid, many for the first time. We worked with our consortium partners and members of the Ohio Network for Health Coverage and Enrollment (ONCE) to host a statewide calendar of outreach and enrollment events on our website, www.ohioforhealth.org. We look forward to expanding this resource during our second year implementing the program. We also partnered with Community Catalyst to administer a Certified Application Counselor (CAC) Initiative grant. This partnership allowed us to provide funding and support to six local organizations to establish new CAC programs or expand existing programs, making more enrollment assistance available in Ohio. 15 After changes to work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (commonly known as food assistance or food stamps) took place in Ohio in late 2013, we began partnering with the Franklin Co. Dept. of Job & Family Services on expanding the Work Experience Program (WEP). In just six months, we recruited 106 new WEP host sites and created 729 WEP opportunities for unemployed adults between 18–50 without dependents. We assessed 2,150 adult SNAP recipients and placed 1,287 at WEP sites so they can access work experience and keep their food assistance. We complete in-depth assessments with Franklin County residents impacted by the changes to SNAP work requirements to identify any barriers they may have to employment. Thus far, we have found that 40% do not have reliable transportation; 30% never graduated high school or received their GED; and 34% have felony convictions. We began planning for an additional partnership with the Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services that will focus on youth aging out of foster care in Franklin County. Our YouthCorps program will provide these at-risk young adults with education and career services to help them transition into adulthood. 17 Private Funders Abbott Laboratories Employee Giving Campaign ADAMH Board of Franklin County Buckeye Community Health Plan CareSource Center for Financial Services Innovation Chesapeake Energy Corporation The Columbus Foundation, including the Lois S. and H.
