Contact Suzette Taylor (CReEd@olgal.org or 251-752-4304). Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands, protect them as they protect us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Last Memorial Day (our secular All Souls Day), the old florist shook his head sadly as we filled the car with baskets to begin our annual “cemetery run.” “Each year the Memorial Day baskets get fewer and fewer,” he lamented. “Of course, we make it up in proms and dances—more and more, for kids younger and younger. Well, the future belongs to the young, I suppose.” But if young people forget the wisdom of the past, and neglect to “treasure” their living grandparents and all the elderly, then we’re building our future on sand. There is no future if we forget those gone before us. All Souls Remembrance Sheets are available in the vestibule. If you would like your deceased loved ones remembered at Masses during the month of November, please fill in a sheet, drop it in the box provided or email the name to: staylor@ olgal.org. The names will be bundled and enshrined on the altar for remembrance at all Masses during the month of November. Today, and throughout November, we not only remember but, in the communion of saints, we also pray for those gone before us. The Catholic doctrine of purgatory teaches that God’s love reaches beyond the grave to heal whatever remains unresolved at one’s passing from this life. The book of Wisdom assures us that our departed are in God’s hands, embraced by grace and mercy. The Letter to the Romans promises us ultimate reconciliation and a share in Christ’s resurrection. Jesus Himself declares that, far from rejection, resurrection and eternal life await believers. Thus All Souls Day offers us the grace-filled consolation of remembering and praying for all the dead, especially those we knew best, in all their humanness, with their faults and flaws, their struggles and sorrows, their imperfections and idiosyncrasies, even their eccentricities. In other words, the same way they knew us and as God knows us all. I ntroduction to the L iturgy of the D ay Our loving God calls us here today to remember those whom we have known and loved, and indeed all the souls who have gone before us. For some of us the pain of grief is still fresh, but for all of us the memories give us strength to carry on in our faith as we pray for those who have died. Today is a day to proclaim our hope in the Resurrection and in the promises of Christ for all whom we have known in this world and whom we hope to see again in the next. The mission of Ushers is to facilitate a spiritual atmosphere in serving at their scheduled Sunday and Holy Day Masses, seasonal liturgical celebrations, and any special occasions as directed by the Pastor. Also, to enthusiastically and cordially welcome parishioners and visitors, answer general questions, and distribute information as requested. Please call the office if you are able to serve. Ushers are especially needed for our 4:30 p.m.Vigil Mass. Question of the Week Besides those I lovingly miss, for whom do I need to pray today precisely because they were difficult to love in life? Or because, at their passing, conflict or unresolved issues remained? GREAT FAMILY SERVICE PROJECT! Join in the Kairos Cookie Ministry! Cookie Pick-up November 5th at Noon Homemade cookies are a tangible expression of Christian love and an indication of God’s concern for a group of people who seldom encounter either in the course of their daily lives. Your loving sacrifice will provide “bread” that shines the Light of God’s Grace into the darkest corners of a prison unit. A typical Kairos Weekend will go through hundreds of dozens of cookies which are distributed to inmates, correction officers, support staff and yes, even team members! Please make as many as you possibly can. They will NOT go to waste! May God bless you for the gift of baking! Cookie Guidelines Cookie Preparation: • Many types of cookies are generally acceptable including: Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Molasses, Chocolate Chip, Ginger and Sugar. Homemade cookies from scratch are always a special treat but store-bought cookie dough can be substituted if desired. However, all cookies should be “homebaked.” • Cookies should be between 2 inches and 2-1/2 inches in diameter and not more than 1/2 inch thick. • Avoid using icing, sugar or any other type of coating on the outside of the cookie. The Key Ingredient – Prayer!: • Pray individually or as a family over the ingredients before and during mixing. • Pray over the cookies as you drop them onto the cookie sheets and bake them. • Ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the prisoners and staff on the Kairos weekend. • Pray that each cookie brings the inmate, officer or warden who eats it closer to God. We want every person to become part of the family of God. • Prayer is vital to a successful Kairos weekend. A prayer list is available in the church entry. Please sign up and pray for us! Packing the Cookies: • Bag thoroughly cooled cookies in a Zip Lock bag – six cookies per bag. You may wish to freeze the cookies if the Kairos Weekend is more than 3 days away. Getting the Cookies to the Prisoners: Please deliver the bagged cookies to the Church Office before Noon on November 5, 2014 so they can take them to the prison. Stay informed!!! Our Lady of the Gulf @OLGCReEd Hurricane Protection Prayer God, hear the voices of Your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf of Mexico can invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You in prayer, and ask You to spare us from any tragedies. Help to remove from our minds past disasters and give us the faith we need to believe You will protect us. Amen. The weekend of November 15th and 16th, we will take part in the Christmas Toy Share program sponsored by the Catholic Social Services and Christian Service Center agencies. Please take an ornament, purchase the toy, and return the unwrapped gift with the ornament firmly attached to the box in church by Sunday, November 30th. Thank you for your help giving toys to children in need. For further information, please contact Judie Flanigan (968-7818) or Frances & Florence Brennan (968-7855).
