The challenge
A spectacular new man-made island has been built in Dubai near
Jumeirah in the shape of a palm. On the Jumeirah Island, there
will be upscale residences, resorts and attractions.
Marubeni Corp. has been selected to build a 5.4 km and four-station monorail system to connect major developments of the
Islands to the land.
The system is driverless, but attendants are present on board as
for monorail at Tokyo Disney Resort. The system is the first major
monorail in the Middle East. SYSTRA was selected as Independent Checking Engineer, to verify the design, operation plan and
to assess the safety case.
Background
In order to improve access to the various activities and to the
residential centers, and to connect the Palm Jumeirah man-made
island with the rest of Dubai, Nakheel (the Owner and Developer
of the Project) was committed to develop a modern public transport system using the monorail technology. In the future there
will be a link to the Dubai Metro. Marubeni Corp., as the Main
Contractor, has been awarded the contract for the Engineering,
Procurement and Construction (EPC) of the Monorail system,
including:
the basic and detailed design of the civil engineering works,
the design, construction and procurement of the railway
systems and rolling stock,
the independent review by the Independent Checking Engineer,
the safety case preparation.

stations and depot
Three Monorail Stations on the Palm Island (Trump Tower, Village
Centre, Atlantis) have a central platform. The fourth station on
the main land (Gateway) with lateral platform is integrated in a
large mixed use building also hosting the System OCC, depot and
workshop and a huge Park and Ride facility. Trump Tower and Village Centre stations are located at the center of large residential/
office/hotel/retail developments.
systems
Rolling Stock with air-conditioning,

1,500 VDC),
Signalling (Automatic Train Operation, electronic interlocking),
Telecommunications,
Automatic Fare Collection (contact less),
Operating Control Center (SCADA, Automatic Train Supervision),
Platform Screen doors,
Workshop Facilities,
Stations and Depot with air-conditioning,
Fire Fighting, CCTV, Passenger Information, Escalator & Elevator,

Emergency diesel generator for traction power supply.
depot track switch
The special four point monorail track switch design allows the
reduction of the depot size.
SYSTRA’s role
