Usually held at the end of the school year, the Summer Concert is well known to bring the school year to an end on a “high note”. 展現音樂潛能 同頌美妙樂韻 In order to provide a performing opportunity to no fewer than six hundred students currently involved in choirs, orchestras and ensembles of both Primary and Secondary Schools, we are delighted to be doubling the “high note” in presenting a “doubleheader”, which look set to be an impressive showcase of the diverse array of musical talents over two evenings. 02 The academic year 2011-2012 is, by anyone’s standard, an eventful and memorable year for the musicians at St. Paul’s. Among the countable is the outstanding achievements in the 64th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival which added 12 pieces of silverware to our trophy cabinet, Treble Choir’s gold-diploma-winning tour to Venice, Italy in April, as well as the much anticipated tour to the United States by the Secondary and Primary Concert Choirs in July, and Harmonica Orchestra’s tour to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August. But what we treasure more dearly is the uncountable: the incredible spirit and bonding among students, built through the joy and tears shared in the hundreds of hours spent together, where music becomes a part of their lives, and their collective memory at, and of St. Paul’s. 都有機會在台上與大家分享他們的學習成果,參與表演的學生人數多達四百, On behalf of the College, I wish to thank you for your support to the College’s musical endeavors throughout the year. As an active participant in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the choirs have long enjoyed continued success in the competition and have won numerous awards over the past decades. In the 64th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2012, both the Junior Choir and Intermediate Choir won the Best Choir Award in their respective categories in the Choir Final, where the latter choir was also crowned as the Most Outstanding Choir of the Year. Of equal importance to the choirs’ participation in the Music Festival are the wonderful performing experiences the choristers receive. The choirs have been invited to perform on such prominent occasions as the Gala Concert of the HKSMF in 2008 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of HKSMF, the Giant Panda Gift Presentation Ceremony in 2007, as well as a performance with the world-renowned vocalist, Bobby McFerrin during the 2004 Hong Kong Arts Festival. In 2009, the choirs were invited to perform in a memorial concert of 50th anniversary of the Butterfly Concerto with Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. In 2010 the choirs were invited to be demonstration choir and perform under the baton of Raoul Gehringer, the Assistant Artistic Director of Vienna Boys' Choir. The choirs were also invited to lead in the singing of the national anthem in a Gala Concert in the Hong Kong May 4th Youth Festival in 2011. In sharing our love and passion for choral singing, the Primary Choirs have participated in exchange programmes with overseas choirs from the United States and Malaysia. The choir performed in the Central Conservatory of China in a performance tour to Beijing with the school orchestra in 2010 and recorded a CD with a specially commissioned work by Mark Hayes in commemorating the College’s 95th anniversary. The critically acclaimed CD “Faith Hope Love” was released by Naxos in December 2010. 08 Junior Choir Conductor: Ms. Yvonne Lui Chi Yan Pianist: Ms. Wendy Lin Sze Wing Chan Cheuk Hang Darius Chan Hau Yan Chan Hayden Martin Chen An Sheng Vincent Cheng Chi Yan Jocelyn Cheung Laetitia Chiu Yan Ling Choi Tsi Loy Elijah Chow Cheuk Yan Chow Chiu Kwan Alexander Chu Rachel Lorelle Chuang Hang Yi Anthony Fan Chung Yuen Ho Man Wah Hu Hsin Kuo Andrea Hui Ching Yi Hung Elroy Shing Tsun Ip Hiu Ki Ko Cheuk Yin Charles Ko Kwen Ning Kwan Yuet Yan Cheryl Kwong Hannah Wing Yee Lai Cheuk Yee Charlotte Lam Hao Xin Lauren Lane Nga Chi Gigi Lau Borg Yan Michelle Lau Ka Hei Heidi Lee Kwan Ho Lee Xuan Zhi Hilbert Leung Hei Yan Li Shing Yau Maison Liu Joshua Liu Ngar Yin Bethanie Lo Lok Yi Aerin Luo Steven Tin Sui Ma Cheuk Laam Charmaine Man Sing Hei Ng Rachel Sinew Ngai Long Sang Clement Pang James Henderson Shu Zoe Yulan Tam Jan Tang Hoi Man Tong Ching Nga Tsang Wai Lam Tse Boe Kee Wan Tsz Kiu Iman Wong Chun Yi Wong Gregory Chi Kan Wong Sin Yee Cheryl Wu Zhuo Yin Jamie Yeung Faith Yip Chun Hei Yu Angela Lok Sze Yuen Shing Ho Yung Cheuk Yin Yung Hei Yu Cheryl Yung Ho Yan Audrey 09 Senior Choir Concert Choir Conductor: Ms. Katherine Cheung Wai Shun Conductors: Ms. Katherine Cheung Wai Shun Ms. Alice Chung Tsz Ping Banfield Charlotte Sophia Louise Chan Christopher Michael Chan Lok Chun Chau Joanna Man Hey Chau Yan Lam Chen Tiffany Hong Kiu Cheng Alice Cheng Sum Yi Emily Chiu Kwan Wing Choi Kelsey Hoi Kiu Chow Mun Robert Chung Cheuk Hei Peony Chung King Cheer Joshua Gaw Matthew Ho Ashley Ho Wing Ching Hsiung Nerissa Tsz Ching Hui Wing Tuen Jat Stephanie Constance Ko Christina Anne Ko Yui Ting Bernard 10 Ku Wun Lucinda Lai Hiu Ching Lam Hoi Kei Lavina Lam To Yiu Lee Christine Hiu Yan Lee Ming Ho Lee Shaun Chad Leung Ashley Siu Tung Leung Chi Ho Jonathan Leung Ming Hin Li Tsz Yan Angie Luk Megan Heyee Miao Katrina Ng Him Yui Timothy Ng Kwok Lam Gemma Ng Pui Lam Helen Ng Tim Wai Ng Tsz Long Pang Chi Yan Joanne Pang Yuk Kei Alexandra Poon Tsz Ting So Jasmine Stannard Carolyn Jane Tak Mei Tam Hoi Fong Naomi Tam Tsz Yan Stephanie Ting Chee Ka Jacqueline To Tsoi Wai Tse Wai Hei Tobie Tsoi Ying Ching Larissa Wong Chun Ho Christopher Wong Hym Yau Morven Wong Man Tsun Wong Ngo Chi Wong Wing Sum Wong Yui Chit Yau Nok Yiu Crystal Yeung Cheuk Yin Yeung Wing Yung Yip Chin Wing Jamie Yung Fang Sing Christy Yung Ryan Xandes Au Yeung Pak Him Chan Anna Selene Chan Chi Chin Nunciata Chan Hiu Yi Chan Hoi Kiu Chan Ting Hon Chan Wing Hei Alison Cheng Hoi Lam Cheung Celine Wen Xi Cheung Hang Chit Cheung Henry Hung Cheung Yue Ching Charlotte Chiu Hiu Ying Samantha Chow Tsoi Yee Ding Wai Yan Fu Yaoji Giuseppe Fung Man Wui Ho Dai Rong Ho Mei Yi Ho Tsi Lok Huen Wing Yu Keung Wai Oi Ko Christelle Joy Kong Chun Yin Kwan Yuk Lam Kwok Wing Yu Lam Christie Lam Jasmine Long Sze Lam Kae Ning Ashley Lam Pak Sun Barry Lau Ching Yan Law Tak Kan Lee Chi Ying Jasmine Lee Hiu Yan Lee Yuen Yee Liao Hui Yi Helaine Liu Kai Yin Andrew Luk Ethan Joshua Mok Ka Lam Kevin Ng Ka Ching Tiffany Ng Nga Yu Elizabeth Shum Hang Chee Siu Ming Sin Siu Wun Chi Una Tang Hiu Chung Tang Valerie Weiping Ting Chee Yeung Jeremy Tsui Ching Tung Wan Ho Ching Hermian Won Larry Justin Wong Hiu Lam Wong Hoi Kiu Heather Wong Kai Yan Brian Wong Ling Fung Anson Wong Nga Ting Wong See Laam Wong Sophie Man Wai Wong Sze Wing Woo Alfred Hoi Fung Yang Ai Ning Emma Yow Carolyn Ka Yin Yu Hoi Man 11 St. Paul’s Co-educational College Primary School Junior Percussion Ensemble Senior Percussion Ensemble T he first record of a percussion ensemble in the school’s history was in 1966 when it first participated in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. With the belief that each of our students is a star in the making, the College seeks to provide the best opportunities for the formation of values and attitudes, development of skills and competencies through the diverse learning opportunities and programmes. With the Compliments of Gerald Lau 劉俊龍 Tania Wong 黃羡嫦 Oscar Lau 劉浩揚 Oliver Lau 劉信言 Our Long-cherished Musical Tradition Since the founding of the School Choir in 1949 and the School Orchestra in 1950, music has always been at the forefront of the school experience at the College. Over the past decades, the College has enjoyed a longstanding tradition of excellence in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival; and along the way, has instilled a lifelong love of music in many of our graduates. Music undoubtedly has become a collective memory for many generations of St. Paulians. Excelling in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2010: (Left) The School Orchestra came first with Distinction in the Secondary School Orchestra (Senior) division. (Right) The Primary School choir won the Most Outstanding Primary School Choir in the Urban Area and the Best Primary School Choir Singing in a Foreign Language. Our Vision for the Future In preserving the trust of our musical heritage, and with a vision of becoming a best-practice school in music education on the international arena, SPCC is committed to developing and realising visionary initiatives. Bearing in mind the globalised world in which our current students will eventually compete in, it demands us to broaden our own mission and prepare them accordingly. As such, it is of utmost importance that we deepen our ties and raise our profile globally, and propel our students to the world stage through participating in international festivals, competitions, artistic exchanges and musical collaborations. International touring looks set to become an integral part of the music-making experience at the College. Tours to the United States, China and Japan are being planned at this very moment. Taking on the World Stage: The Senior Mixed Voice Choir was being crowned as the Winner of the Youth Mixed Voice Category (Open Competition) at the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China in July 2010. The Treble Choir also participated and was a silver medalist in the finals. ✃ The Council of St. Paul’s Co-educational College Charitable Trust Music Endowment Fund Enclosed is my cheque to “SPCC Charitable Trust” in support of the Music Endowment Fund: Cheque No. Bank HK$3,000 Others HK$____________________ Donations of HK$3,000 or above will be acknowledged on our next Fundraising Annual Report Name Contact No. Alumni (Class of ) Group Donation Name_________________________ Email address: Parent (Name of Student/School/Class) _________________________ Address Please send me a receipt I do not wish the above information be disclosed for acknowledgement purpose. Furthermore, a “Composers-in-Residence” scheme was also launched with the objective of allowing students rare access to the creative process of music-making through interacting with composers. Under this scheme, composers of reputable standing are commissioned to compose choral music specifically for the various choirs of SPCC, and these works will be published in the future as our contribution to the choral repertoire, and the music community at large. Renowned composers such as Professor Victor Chan Wai Kwong, Professor Richard Tsang Yip Fat and Dr Steve Ho Sung Chi were among the first to be invited in 2010. Knowing that music has the power to enrich human experience, to draw us to new heights and depths and to create community and meaning, the future of our students’ musical experience stands before us.To help us realise our vision, and to ensure sustainable growth and diversification of our music programmes, the Music Endowment Fund was established within SPCC Charitable Trust to support the College on these bold musical ambitions. With the Fund being of an endowed nature, it not only ensures that these initiatives are financially supported for a sustainable period of time, but also allow the College to be more visionary, or grandioso (to paraphrase it in a musical term) in its planning. Deepening International Ties: Professor Robert Blocker, Dean of the School of Music, Yale University, recently spoke at our morning assembly and worked with two of our musically gifted students afterwards. Working with the Composer: Professor Victor Chan coached and interacted with the Senior Mixed Voice Choir on his work, “Ye Did It Unto Me” commissioned for the choir in June 2010. Learning from the Maestro: Members of the SPCCPS Orchestra interviewed Maestro Yongyan Hu of the Central Conservatory of Music, in the National Centre for the Performing Arts during their 4-day performing tour to Beijing in April 2010. ✃We call for your support as we shape the musical future of the College, and of the students.
