We promise lots to see, do and learn. As the industry’s only member directed association, we are returning to a past host city for the first time. Much has changed since 1995 including a ten-fold increase in attendance. There were 91 attendees in 1995 and well over 900 this year! Our industry continues its steady growth. NASC membership is at record levels, attendance at our meetings is up, and we have more event owners and owner representatives at the Symposium than ever. Last year we committed to refocus all of our efforts around continued education. Here in Milwaukee you will receive multiple servings of the latest and best practices in sports event travel. Our member directed meetings committee has been working for a year on the program and we are very sure you will get the right mix of information, fun, and opportunities to write new business. You will hear from experts across the United States but also from Canada, Denmark and Switzerland. This is by design: there is so much to learn from others and the world of international sport is available to interested host cities. Nothing remains the same. Beth Hecquet resigned to accept a position outside the industry earlier this year, and Lori Gamble has accepted a fulltime position as your Associate Executive Director. We are not hiring a director of meetings and events. Instead we are evaluating our needs, creating new job descriptions, considering budget implications and then moving forward with at least one new employee. In the past year we were able to accomplish the following: • CSEE program redesign including a decision to introduce on-line learning late in 2015 • Expanded our national marketing and public relations programs • Started our NASC Playbook (quarterly publication) • Introduced our Get in the Game weekly newsletter • Created an extensive series of webinars • Created our own stand-alone fall conference that launches this September in Colorado Springs For 2016 you can expect more. For example, we will establish the NASC Hall of Fame and hold the inaugural enshrinement dinner in Grand Rapids. This project will be directed by our Leadership Council, which consists of past chairpersons of the NASC. So, listen, learn, share and sell! This can include a variety of types of marketing: print ads, newsletters, email blasts, digital marketing (including websites, social media components, etc.), press releases, media coverage or any other promotional program. Campaign should promote your organization as a sports destination not general travel or meetings. For complete details, visit SportsCommissions.org/About/Member-Awards 3 CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS 2015-2016 Committees and Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers are the foundation of the NASC. In the last year, more than 100 committee volunteers contributed to the progress and growth of the NASC in many ways, including: • Referring industry colleagues to join the Association • Recommending educational content and programming for the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium, the original conference and longest-running reverse tradeshow for the sports tourism industry • Expanding mentoring activities for new members and first time Symposium attendees • Establishing new categories and serving on judging panels for the annual member awards • Developing CSEE modules • Creating the inaugural NASC Sports Legacy Fund community service project We invite you to respond to this year’s call for volunteers. We need your skills, passion, and perspectives to build a vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural group of volunteer leaders throughout our committees. The NASC is YOUR association; committee participation is one of the best ways to be engaged and help contribute to the decision-making that continues to position the NASC as the most valuable resource available to sports event professionals. Members, including new committee members and those who currently serve, must respond to the call for volunteers by May 8, 2015. Thank you for your consideration! The committee also serves as judges for the various categories. Membership Committee The Membership Committee oversees membership retention and recruitment. The committee contacts inactive and cancelled members on behalf of the association to encourage them to renew. The committee also evaluates membership benefits and resources on an annual basis. Mentoring Committee The Mentoring Committee cultivates relationships with new members to help guide them through their first year of membership. The committee is also responsible for planning and hosting first time attendee activities at the annual Symposium. Pre-requisites: A minimum of four years of NASC membership and industry experience. Professional Development Committee The Professional Development Committee assists with the development and implementation of the CSEE Program. Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls, assist in the development of modules and continually evaluate the program to strengthen the CSEE brand. Pre-requisites: Must be currently enrolled in the CSEE Program and have attended at least two modules. Sports Legacy Committee The Sports Legacy Committee manages the Sports Legacy Fund. The committee establishes the criteria and eligibility requirements for beneficiaries of the fund and selects the beneficiary each year. The committee also coordinates all aspects of the annual fundraiser, including promotion, solicitation of donation items, and ticket sales, as well as equipment donations. Symposium Committee The Symposium Committee assists in the planning and execution of the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium. Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls, recruit event owners, develop education sessions including review of topics, examination of proposals, selection of speakers, and promote the Symposium through word of mouth marketing to industry peers and colleagues. Partnering with the VA, a Local Organizing Committee and host PVA Chapter, we bring 600 wheelchair Athletes, their family members, staff, judges and venue coordinators together to create this 7 day event. John presently manages the east coast baseball division as well as a staff in developing new baseball product and events. Mike Chandler Chandler’s event career began as a volunteer with USA Volleyball, quickly leading to a full-time position with USA Volleyball National Office. For 13 years Chandler led all operations for the USA National Team tours, International Tournaments, and the USAV National Championship events. John has more than three decades of experience in the travel and hospitality industry. Dr. Julie Lanzillo Dr. Julie Lanzillo is currently an Assistant Professor of Sport & Entertainment Management at Neumann University in the Philadelphia suburb of Aston, Pennsylvania. Professionally she has been involved in sports marketing, event management and communications for over 25 years. She founded InfoSport, Inc. an international sports marketing agency focusing on the global professional soccer industry, which is the event rights holder to the InfoSport Pro Soccer Combine. William LeMonnier William LeMonnier, a 20 year veteran of the Big Ten, currently serves as an ESPN “rules expert & analyst”. Alicia has an extensive background as an elite athlete and coach, in sport program development and in program management. After competing at University from 1981 through 1984 she played professionally on the Women’s International Squash Tour from 1986 through 1991. She was the National Junior Squash Coach from 1994-1998 and in 1998 moved to Colorado Springs to become the Manager of Athlete Development for the United States Olympic Committee. Alicia earned her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and serves as Board President of the Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, Treasurer of the National Council for Youth Sports and member of the El Pomar Youth Sports Park and Pikes Peak Community Foundation Boards. Mike Millay Mike Millay had a 19-year executive career at ESPN Wide World of Sports in areas of business development, marketing, sales and event management positioning EWWS as the pre-eminent sports complex in the world. Millay served as the executive director of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation for six and a half years and served as NASC chairman for two terms. Mike serves on the boards of the Central Florida Sports Commission, the DeVos Sports Business Management Program and the National Council of Youth Sports. He has also served on the SportsTravel Magazine Editorial Advisory Board since its launch. 26 Larry Needle Larry Needle is executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress (PSC), a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PCVB) which attracts major sporting events and conventions to the Philadelphia area. Larry’s primary role is to pursue bids for future sporting events and to facilitate their implementation in Philadelphia. PSC is also co-producer of the annual Army-Navy Game, a tradition held in Philadelphia for well over a century. Under Larry’s leadership, PSC, working in conjunction with the City, State, the region’s professional teams, universities and venues, has attracted many sporting events to Philadelphia including: the U.S. Olympic Trials for Gymnastics and Table Tennis, ESPN X Games, NBA All-Star Weekend, NCAA Women’s Final Four, Major League Baseball All-Star Weekend, U.S. Figure Skating Championships, World Dragon Boat Racing Championships, NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships, NCAA Frozen Four and NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regional, among others. Dale Neuburger Dale Neuburger is Director of TSE Consulting, providing strategic services to sports commissions, CVBs, and national sports organizations. His sports career spans 40 years as Assistant Athletic Director of Indiana University, COO of USA Track & Field, President of Indiana Sports Corporation and, a variety of international and domestic aquatic sports leadership positions. Ryan Ortiz Ryan Ortiz, who serves as USABA’s Assistant Executive Director for Development, began working with the organization in April 2004 after working as part of the development team in the University of New Mexico Athletic Department. Ortiz is responsible for working with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop a comprehensive fundraising strategy which concentrates on expanding philanthropic support for the organization. This includes identifying, analyzing, cultivating and soliciting donors through personal outreach, direct mail, bequests, special events, foundations and publications. He also works with performance staff in order to plan and execute USABA’s many national and international events. His knowledge base includes venue sales/contracting & event operations across all market segments. During his time in the industry he has worked the 1998 NBA All-Star game, the 2007 National Senior Games, many USA Volleyball events, multi-court Eddie Ford and AAU Basketball, USA Fencing, The National Wheelchair Basketball Association and many others. Additionally, Dave works with Sports Trade Associations like the Archery Trade Association & National Rifle Association. The Kentucky Exposition Center is owned by the Kentucky State Fair Board which also owns and operates the Kentucky International Convention Center. Monica Paul Serving as the Executive Director for the Dallas Sports Commission, Monica Paul plays an essential role in Dallas’ acquisition of sports competitions and events, including solicitation of Olympic, professional, collegiate and amateur sports, events and meetings. Paul liaised with the Super Bowl XLV Host Committee in 2011, served as Executive Director of the Dallas World Cup Bid Committee, served on the NBA All-Star 2010 Local Organizing Committee as well as the NCAA Men’s Final Four LOC in 2014 and the College Football Playoff LOC in 2014-15. Paul’s previous experience includes USA Volleyball, the National Senior Games, USA Taekwondo and the Junior Volleyball Association of Austin. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from UT Austin and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Kevin Phelan is a board member of the Council for Responsible Sport and President of Agon Partners, a strategic advisory practice working with organizations to develop and implement strategy and innovation in a sustainable context. Kevin has more than 25 years of executive leadership in sectors including Energy, Sustainability, Retail and Renewables. He was previously Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for BP America and SVP Olympic Mobility. Kevin has worked with major sporting organizations including London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, US Olympic Committee, British Olympic Association, Warrior Games, Chicago Cubs, White Sox and Bears and New York Giants. He advises multiple events through the Council. Mike Price, CSEE Mike Price is the Executive Director of the Greater Lansing Sports Authority (GLSA) and was integral in its creation. The GLSA is dedicated to raising the bar for superior sports development and marketing in the Lansing region and has been recognized by peers for their efforts; recipients of NASC Awards in Outstanding Web Presence, Outstanding Communication/ Advertising and in 2011 as Member of the Year. As one of the founding DMO’s for Pure Michigan Sports, Mike was instrumental in the creation of the initiative and currently has the pleasure of serving as the group’s coordinator. Mike is a Certified Sports Event Executive (CSEE) and is currently a member of the Member Mentoring Committee. Mike Rindo Mike Rindo is the Assistant Chancellor for Facilities and University Relations at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is responsible for all aspects of facilities planning and management, media relations, community and government relations, as well as all communications functions that support the mission of the university. Don Schumacher, CSEE Don Schumacher, Executive Director, NASC - Don has been executive director of the NASC since 1994, and was executive director of the Greater Cincinnati Sports & Events Commission from 1989-1998. He also recently served four years on the board of directors of the U.S. Travel Association, and teaches the Sports Marketing elective in DMAI’s CDME Program. Don has spent more than thirty years managing sports facilities, bidding on and promoting sports events, conducting market and feasibility studies, and consulting with convention and visitors bureaus. In the last twenty years he has conducted at least 75 studies for sports travel industry clients. He was named one of “25 Influential People You Should Know” by Sports Events magazine. Mike Stevens Dr. Patrick Rishe Dr. Patrick Rishe is the Founder and CEO of Sportsimpacts, a national sports consulting firm which has conducted more than 80 economic impact studies, including two Super Bowls, three Final Fours, and a Ryder Cup. He created the economic impact calculator employed by the National Association of Sports Commissions, which serves more than 400 sports commissions and tourism agencies across America. Starting June 1, Dr. Rishe will be the Director of the Sports Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis, a Top 20 university nationally. Since 2010, Dr. Rishe has been a contributing OpEd columnist for Forbes. He specializes in developing sports and recreation opportunities for Veterans with Spinal Cord Injury and other physical disabilities as a tool to enhance the rehabilitation process and improve their independence. Over the years, Dave has served in various leadership positions in the VA. In 2012, he accepted the position as Director, National Veterans Wheelchair Games. He is now leading the world’s largest annual wheelchair sports program that the Department of Veteran Affairs co-presents with the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Dave lives with his wife and family in Seattle, WA. When he’s not at work, he loves to cook, golf, bike, and enjoy the Pacific Northwest. The majority of his professional career was spent as a Division I Collegiate Athletics Administrator (20 years at Arizona State University and 3 years at University of Hawaii). He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a Masters in Public Administration from Arizona Sports University. Randy Schubert Randy Schubert has been the Executive Director of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association for the past three years. Randy received his degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Randy brings more than 30 years of senior management experience in the nonprofit sports sector at the local, state, national and international levels to the NWBA. He is nationally recognized in the Special Olympics Movement as an effective and outstanding organizational change facilitator and has a proven success record of board building, volunteer management, strategic planning, financial analysis, and fundraising planning and implementation. Shelley Villaloboso Shelley Villalobosó has focused on helping sports events reduce their environmental footprints and amplify their positive social impacts for five years.
