A special message from the 2014 Costa Mesa Home
for the Holidays Home Tour Chair:
W
e are thrilled to bring a new tradition to Costa Mesa with this first ever Costa Mesa Home
for the Holidays Home Tour. Our neighboring schools in Newport Beach and Corona
del Mar have been hosting home tours as an annual
fundraiser for Newport Harbor High School & Corona del
Mar for more than three decades. It’s through the generosity of their organizing committees and leaders that we
were able to collaborate to bring this time honored event
to Costa Mesa. We are excited to showcase five unique
Costa Mesa homes from all parts of the city, along with
the Mesa Water “Water Wise Wonderland” garden project.
The five homes represent the eclectic nature of Costa
Mesa and its variety of neighborhoods and homes. We
hope that in the years to follow that this event continues
to showcase all of the great neighborhoods in Costa Mesa
while raising money for the Arts & Science Academies:
ACE & DELTA at Costa Mesa Middle and High School.

We, on the Home Tour Committee, are extremely

to us. It’s wonderful to have two CMHS Zone families
participating. None of these business owners have
children in our local schools, but they care about
and love Costa Mesa. They gave more than just
financial resources, they contributed countless hours
assisting the homeowners to prepare, working with
the designers, attending meetings, marketing and
promoting our first event. We truly appreciate them
and encourage you to support their businesses.

This modern traditional home is a fresh take on the coastal vibe.
Special points of interest:
Eastside Collective is an exclusive community of just eight
new homes located in desirable Eastside Costa Mesa just a
short walk away from the beautiful back bay nature preserve
and trails.
Origins/Renovations & Remodels:
The homes were designed by the award winning architectural
firm of JZMK Partners of Costa Mesa and developed by the
team of Pinnacle Residential and Collective Housing Supply
Co. We have a number of local firms included in our project.
The project architect, JZMK is a Costa Mesa firm as well as a
number of suppliers and consultants including:
Kollrich plumbing fixtures manufactured in Costa Mesa are
used exclusively. Nail It finish carpentry and stairs is located
in Costa Mesa. Art Guy landscape architecture is a Costa
Mesa resident. Robin Hamers civil engineering is a Costa
Mesa company.
Molly Wood Garden Design is a Costa Mesa landscape design
business.
Home Style:
These beautiful new homes feature a “modern traditional”
lifestyle that is at the same time both sophisticated
and casual. The architecture has a decidedly “modern
farmhouse” look that is typically found only in exclusive
custom home developments. The spacious floor plans have
been created to provide the best in Southern California
coastal indoor-outdoor living with spacious great room and
kitchen with 12 foot wall of glass that opens to your own
private outdoor retreat.
A must-have for the home:
The homes at Collective include 3 bedrooms and 2 and 1/2
baths. The master retreat is a must see with it’s spacious

The home includes classic board and batten siding. This
sustainable home also has recycled content materials in

The interior design for the Collective model home was
created in partnership with West Elm and their South Coast
Plaza design team. All the furnishings are available for

From the two turntables and the custom-made “records”
drawer in the front room to the drum set and guitar wall
in the kids’ room and playroom, music is a central theme
in our Westside home. Music is what we can turn to in all
moods and it’s not very often that we are living in just a
silent home.
We loved the layout of our ranch style Westside
Costa Mesa home and the style that runs through the
neighborhood, but we reached a point where we were
longing for a bit more space. We took advantage of the
large front lawn and, inspired by the Eichler homes in
Orange, CA, used the space and added onto the home
while maintaining the look and feel of the original home
and layout. The laundry room and master bed/bath that
come out towards the street were added on in 2007, thus
creating what we now call the “compound” and a home
where you can see inside and out, and into other parts of the
home from most all points.
Home Style:
Outside, we refer to our house as Contemporary Costa Mesa/
California Ranch Style, while the inside is modernly eclectic.
Inspired by music, art, travel, action sports, sustainability,
and modern design, the home has reference to many an
aspect of each of our lives.
The kitchen. So much of our life revolves around the food in
our lives and our kitchen. The newest addition to our home,
it’s a central meeting place for friends, a place for breakfast
and homework, a place for family happy hour, and a place for
homemade meals and exploring new flavors all year long.
We love the concrete throughout the compound, the bamboo
floors, our custom TV/Record cabinet and kitchen and, of
course our repurposed skate tile backsplash in the kitchen.
While they may not be unusual, you won’t find them in
all homes: A solar array on the roof, composting and
vermiposting in the backyard, a small skate street course in
the backyard, an outdoor fireplace in the courtyard, and a wall
in the kitchen made of previously used (one of them by our
son) skate decks.
Even though the master bedroom on Sundays, watching
Sunday Morning the news show, or lounging on the chaise
lounge on a mid-summer afternoon are close contenders, we
all think that the opportunity to eat together in front of the
outdoor fireplace in our front courtyard, with the music on, is
quite special. We’ve had many an amazing evening with just
family, and with many friends there.
Favorite Home for the Holidays Tradition:
Finding the perfect “Charlie Brown Christmas tree” and
decorating it as a family with celebratory hot cocoa and
obligatory Christmas music!

A mid-century traditional home that emphasizes the need
for comfortable spaces for family gatherings for this growing
Mustang family.
Florals: Table2Garden
This Costa Mesa family has a long history of Costa Mesa and
Mustang Pride. The Rice family has lived in Costa Mesa since 1958.
Their family members have attended every elementary school in
the zone as well as Costa Mesa High School. They are also a family
of educators. Rob Rice’s father was the Principal at Rea School
when it was a junior high school, and Bryan is a history teacher and
former CMHS Basketball coach. Their youngest granddaughter is
active in Middle school ASB, a cheerleader, water polo player, and
DELTA Science Academy student. They bleed green.
Our College Park home addition was built with a growing family
in mind. We now have 10 grandchildren, so we needed both the
indoor and outdoor space to contain all of the energy.
When we were completing the addition, we had not even ordered
the bathroom fixtures when the fireplace, BBQ and outside
stovetop were delivered. My husband believed they would be
“value engineered” out of the addition, so he made sure they were
on hand very early! The china painting in the family room cabinet
and the lamp in the living room were painted by my Grandmother.
Origins, Renovations/Remodels:
Our home was built in 1958 and had little renovation work until
early in 2001. We started with the kitchen remodel and then just
a couple of years later we pushed out the walls to create a bigger
living space and the outdoor room. This meant tearing off the
entire back of the house and raising the height of the roof. We lived
in the house during the remodel. It was quite an adventure. We
did all of the finish work ourselves, with a lot of help from friends
and family. The result is a space big enough for many to enjoy.
Our master bathroom was very, very tiny in our original home.
With the addition, we were able to add double sinks, a large
shower and our fantastic soaking tub. The outdoor fireplace that
we installed is awesome. We spend many hours enjoying time
outside, whether it is just the two of us, or we are entertaining a
large group. We love the winding path that our son designed in the
backyard. It is unusual and it provides some whimsy that blends
well with the structure of the stone.
Home Style:
Giving our “style” a name is one of the hardest things for us. We
have used ideas from the past and the present. We both love
traditional homes, but we wanted ours to be welcoming and fun.
The one thing that we had to have was the outdoor living space.
With our large family, we needed as much room as possible, and
being able to be outside at any time of the year is a real blessing.
One of our favorites is the wood floors. They keep our home light
and airy, and they really hide the wear and tear.
As you can see from some of the other answers, our favorite place
is the outdoor room. We enjoy sitting outside at any time of the
year, especially in fall and winter when we can get full use of the
fireplace. It is a wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine and
reflect on the great place we get to live.
My favorite Christmas tradition happens when all of our children
and grandchildren are gathered here on Christmas morning. The
kids squeal with delight when they arrive, ready to share what
Santa brought and thrilled to be together to celebrate and eat our
traditional pre-breakfast favorite - Monkey Bread.

This mid-century Mesa Verde golf course view home
has been upgraded and remodeled into a modern
style with clean simplicity.
Our Mesa Verde home was remodeled in 2012. The entire back of the house was torn
down to the foundation and rebuilt. The 3 children’s rooms were left alone except for
we added 1 bathroom. Home Style:
Mid Century Modern. We love the clean simple lines of modern homes. A must-have for the home:
We had to have an open great room with indoor-outdoor feel. We wanted a room that
we could have a lot of people in and not have it feel cramped and at the same time
flow to the outdoors where our SOCAL weather could be enjoyed.
Cement, metal and Cesar stone. We love our cement floors and our metal fleetwood
windows and doors.
There are ZERO appliances or video components visible, as everything is hidden to
keep the clean look.
On the golf course during the day and in our spa at night.
Having the entire family over for Thanksgiving!

The solar attic fans and hidden surround sound are special features
we enjoy.
Our Mesa Woods home was originally built in 1966. As our family
grew, as well as our desire to remain in our home, our need to add
shared living space and a larger, more efficient kitchen became apparent. We added 950 square feet comprised of a “great room”...open
layout kitchen/family room and a laundry/mud room.
Home Style:
The outside of our home is California Coastal with its wood siding,
pillar construction, and front porch. We also have a wrap-around
covered porch in the backyard.
The inside is more eclectic with a mix of mid-century modern, French
provincial, and California easy-living. Our style has evolved over the
years and our house reflects the many phases we have gone through.
Definitely moving the washer/dryer from the garage to inside the
house. We now have a large laundry/mud room that lessens the pain
of doing laundry!
We love natural stone and used it throughout the house - marble
backsplash in the kitchen, marble shower floor, granite countertops.
Our hardwood floors are distressed which help to mask the wear and
tear from our family of 6. We used wallpaper in the guest bath to add
some whimsy. Our furniture is a mix of leather, fabric, and different
woods from teak to walnut to rosewood.
All exterior walls are 2” X 6” (most homes are 2” X 4”) and insulated
so the house is very environmentally sound. We have used mostly LED lamps throughout the bedrooms and hallways. All exterior
security motion lights are LED. The 2 attic fans are solar. Our dining
room chandelier came out of an old Albertsons grocery store remodel
my company did and we kept it in our garage for over 5 years waiting
to find a great spot for it.
We love our oversized leather couch in our family room because our
whole family can snuggle on it and watch TV!

a Water-Wise Wonderland! Join us at our Mesa
Water Reliability Facility (MWRF) for a self-guided garden tour that will present some great
water-saving tips and tools to spruce up your home garden
with drought-friendly landscaping.
The MWRF provides our customers with a 100% local and
reliable water supply, featuring our symbolic California
redwoods, and several gardens organized by water use,
including a variety of native and drought-tolerant grasses,
riparian varieties, sages, coastal succulents, and more!
This is a fun and friendly garden tour.

ABOUT COSTA MESA HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION
History of CMHS Foundation
The CMHS Foundation was founded in October
of 2003 to manage the generous donation of an
endowment of $1million from the C.J. Segerstrom
& Sons family to fund enhanced educational
advancement opportunities and facilities at Costa
Mesa High and Middle School.
Contributions History for the CMHS Foundation
During the first 10 years, the Foundation
contributed more than $502,000.00 in grants
directly from the interest earned on the
endowment, such as:

annually: Costa Mesa Community Run in April;

Mesa Home for the Holidays Home Tour.
In 2013-14 the CMHS Foundation donated more
than $92,000 for teacher and administration
grants, student activities and trips, and band
uniforms.
Our fundraising goal for 2014-15, as we plan for
the new Signature Academics and Arts Academies
is $100,000. We are only half way to our goal.
Please donate to help us fund a concert grand
piano, enhanced amenities for the new performing
arts center. We also hope to support a Chinese
Student Exchange trip in 2015-16 and amenities
for the new Mustang Stadium currently under
construction.
Parent and community volunteers host all of our
events. We appreciate your support of the first
Home Tour for what we hope will become an
annual tradition.

The Academy of Creative Expression -
Academic Success through Interdisciplinary
Learning
To inspire greater levels of academic success, the
Academy of Creative Expression (ACE) will link
student interest and talents in the Arts to all aspects
of the educational experience. By utilizing their
strengths in the Arts, teachers guide students to
higher levels of achievement in all subject areas
by linking the Arts with English, Math, Science and
History for an enriched academic experience.
ACE students participate in arts course work
through an extended day schedule. This schedule
permits students to cross idioms (e.g. participation
in theatre and dance or orchestra, choir, and band
simultaneously is possible). Studying the arts
prepares students considerably for the workplace.
According to Americans for the Arts, “U.S. employers
rate creativity and innovation among the top five
skills that will increase in importance in the next five
years, and rank it among the top challenges facing
CEOs.” ACE will provide students with the essential
skills in the performing arts that will benefit them as
they prepare for college/career.
ACE Prep
Sonora Arts Academy of Creative Expression
(SAACE)
Sonora Elementary school will prepare students
to matriculate to ACE at the middle school and is
ready to launch the Sonora Arts Academy of Creative
Expression (SAACE) (ACE Prep) in the 2014-15 school
years.
SAACE will operate as a “school within a school”.
Students interested in expanding their abilities in
Performing and/or Fine/Visual arts will apply for
their choice of conservatories: Theater Performance,
Choreographic Dance, Visual Arts Emphasis,
Technical Theater, Instrumental Music: Beginning,
Intermediate, Advanced Band, Hand bells and/or
Strings.
Sonora’s History: Segerstrom Center Partnership
Over the past 9 years, Sonora has established itself
as an “arts centered school community”. Sonora
teachers have been professionally trained by Master
Teaching Artists from the SCA (Segerstrom Center
for the Arts) and Arts Advantage. Both teachertraining programs involve strategic integration of
the arts with academics, which aligns to the STEAM
model at CMMS and CMHS. Sonora is also the only
school within the Costa Mesa Zone to add a kiln for
ceramics instruction. Every grade has participated
in the use of ceramics as an art medium. Currently,
Sonora relies on parent and community volunteers to
sustain its unique arts focus.
ACE Prep
Paularino Elementary—Digital Arts
In addition to offering a solid academic curriculum,
Paularino will offer after and during school digital
arts instruction to prepare students for matriculation
to the CMHS digital arts pathway in ACE. Digital arts
is the emerging field where technology can be used
to create art (web design, z z video production) using
ipads, computers, and photography.
Apply Spring 2015
Offering an elementary to high school arts and music
program is unique in Orange County. Costa Mesa
aspires to compete with established performing arts
schools as we embrace our city’s motto—City of the
Arts. Applications and auditions occur in Spring 2015
for 7-9th graders into the inaugural ACE class to

ACE & DELTA PROGRAMS
CMMS/HS DELTA - Science,
Technology & Math Academy
The DELTA Academy is a pathway geared for high
achieving science and math students to prepare them
for entrance into top tier Universities. The students
are exposed to many unique learning opportunities
and rigorous academics, including robotics, computer
programming, and high-level science labs. In 2015,
the Engineering focus through Project Lead the
Way will be added. Project Lead The Way’s “HS
Engineering” curriculum will engage students and
provide them with a foundation and proven path to
post-secondary training and career success in STEMrelated fields. Students will receive special seals of
merit at graduation and on transcripts. Students who
complete the program also have the opportunity to
earn accelerated admission for college programs. In
addition, partnerships between the school and industry
will provide students with internships and other
opportunities for experience.
DELTA Prep
Davis Magnet Science &Technology School
(STEM) Education to equip and inspire our world’s
future scientists, programmers, engineers, and
mathematicians. A Robotics Club has launched at
Killybrooke. As they prepare to create their robots,
students are learning computer programming using
Scratch. Scratch is a programming language where
children can program and share interactive media
such as stories, games, and animation. As children
create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively,
work collaboratively, and reason systematically. The
robotics team may participate in the VEX Worldwide
Competition.
DELTA & ACE Prep
College Park Elementary Mandarin Immerson
Beginning in the Fall of 2015, College Park will become
a duel immersion Mandarin English school. The
educational program at College Park endeavors to
identify, nurture and celebrate these qualities in all of
our students. In addition we believe that all students
can benefit from, and have the capacity to be bilingual
and bicultural. Regardless of background or home
language, all students spend 55% of their instructional
day learning the California standards in Mandarin
Chinese. Davis Elementary provides the matriculation necessary
to succeed in the CMMS/HS DELTA Academy. Davis
provides hands-on instruction focusing on math,
science, and technology. The Davis Magnet School campus contains two
computer labs, a hands-on science lab, math lab,
learning gardens, and ecology center. These are all
used to provide additional instruction for students in
grades preschool through sixth grade. DELTA Prep
Killybrooke Computer Science Program
Prepares Students for DELTA
Killybrooke School provides the necessary
matriculation to succeed in the DELTA Academy
by providing numerous experiences in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
BAND & CHOIR
The Costa Mesa High School Madrigal Choir is one of four choirs at
the school and is the top auditioned choir at the school with students
in grades 9-12. The choir performs a varied repertoire of music
spanning many centuries and continents each year. This fall they
have already performed as the back-up choir for Britain’s Got Talent
contestant Susan Boyle for her October performance at Segerstrom
Center. They are excited to have been invited to perform in Carnegie
this spring where they will perform under the baton of well-known
composer and conductor John Rutter. The choir has previously
performed on the stage of the Segerstrom Center (singing back
up for American Idol contestant Clay Aiken), in Disneyland’s
annual CandleLight concert, at Knott’s Berry Farm, at the Mormon
Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, and at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
The busy concert season includes numerous holiday performances
for the local community, a jazz concert, a choral literature concert,
and a concert featuring songs from the stage and screen. In
The Costa Mesa High School Band Program, under
the direction of Sandy Gilboe, is a very active program
that performs nearly 100 perform ances throughout the year
for the school, community and in competition. The students
have garnered many awards over the years, including
addition, each year the department holds a special benefit concert
featuring student solos and donates the money raised to a charity.
Past benefactors of the Solo Night have included Save the Children”
for tsunami relief and earthquake relief in Haiti, “Habitat for
Humanity” for hurricane relief, the local Costa Mesa charity “Share
Our Selves,” and “Africares,” which works to end poverty in Africa,
the Southwest Center in Santa Ana, and HALO, an organization
which assists families who have children with autism. Students
who sing in the choir are busy in numerous other school activities
as well, including athletics, cheerleading, student government, and
theater productions.
The Costa Mesa Choirs are under the direction of Jon
Lindfors, with Jerry Wilhoit serving as the accompanist.

3 years, as well as the Drum Line Finals. The program
includes 3 levels of concert band, marching band, jazz band,
drum line, a small ensemble program and color guard.”
