The orders recently given by the Norwegian Cruise
Line for a further two luxury liners bring the number
of large cruise ships in the shipyard‘s order books to
a current total of nine.
This means we have now sufficient orders to take us
through to the year 2019. It is not only the good capacity level in all areas of the shipyard that is remarkable but also the fact that the delivery dates in the
spring and autumn of the next few years represent
a 6-month cycle. This cycle is not only advantageous
for the yard but also for our suppliers. Mostly the
interior finishing companies, but also firms working
for us under work and labour contacts benefit from
the steady workload resulting from this cycle.
We are very proud that some of the world‘s biggest
cruise ship-owning companies, such as Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Star
Cruises have placed their faith in us and given us
the opportunity to build these complex and sophisticated ships here in Papenburg.
This trust does not just apply to MEYER WERFT alone but equally to the excellent cluster of small and
large suppliers with whom we have been working
together successfully for many years, and in some
cases decades, in creating these extraordinarily
challenging ‚floating cities‘.

At MEYER WERFT three Quantum-class ships are under construction for Royal Caribbean International.
We have said before that the proportion of external costs in the cruise ships we build is more than
75%. This means that the success or failure of our
projects depends to a decisive extent on our cooperations with partner companies on the supply side;
there are more than 800 suppliers who support us
in our shipbuilding activities.
Shipbuilding is an extremely tough business in our
market segment too. Orders are always put out for
tender worldwide – our competitors are not only
in Europe, but also increasingly in the Far East. To
keep a step ahead in this market, we always need
to remain that much better than the competition.
We have always succeeded in maintaining this in
the past, and we are confident that you will support
us in ensuring that it remains so in the future.
When it comes to building cruise ships, we are
among the top addresses in the world. Over the last
25 years, we have worked hard to attain this market

MEYER WERFT JOINS FORCES WITH STX FINLAND
Following numerous talks aimed at strengthening our cooperation with the cruise
shipyard STX Finland in Turku, the participation of MEYER WERFT was finally agreed
in early August. MEYER WERFT has now acquired a 70% stake in the company, in
so doing taking over the operative management of the Finnish shipyard.
There are currently around 1,300 people directly
employed in Finland in building the cruise ship Mein
Schiff 4 for the German shipping company, Reederei
TUI Cruises. The Hamburg shipping line, a joint venture between TUI and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
(RCCL), has also ordered two more ships of this class
(Mein Schiff 5 & 6) from the shipyard in Turku.
STX Finland are acknowledged specialists in cruise
ships, and the shipyard demonstrates a high level of
technological know-how. ‚By reinforcing our joint
efforts in the field of research & development within the cruise ship market and combining them
with the mutual learning effects gained in the working procedures, we will be able to benefit from
positive synergies in the future,“ says CEO Dr. Jan
Meyer. The shipyard also sees a further positive effect in the increased flexibility it is now able to offer
customers.
All the shipyard‘s sites are set to undergo similar
reinforcement in the future. A contract to secure
the site is currently being discussed with the state
of Lower Saxony. This illustrates that it is not just
about relocating capacities, but about significantly

strengthening the concentration of European competences in the cruise ship sector. The acquisition
is still subject to confirmation by the participating
financial institutions and clearance by the Federal
Cartel Office. The name of the company will then
be changed from STX Finland Oy to Meyer Turku
Shipyard Oy.

SUSTAINED SUCCESS FROM OPEN
AND TRANSPARENT COOPERATION
We have now further intensified our cooperations with a number of our suppliers
with the aim of working more closely with them and sustainably enhancing our
activities throughout the delivery chain.
The workshop team members
With more than 800 suppliers involved in each new
ship construction, comprising a virtually incomparable variety of industries and trades, the construction
of cruise ships must be one of the most complex industrial activities of all. With an outsourcing level
of over 75%, we attach particular importance and
responsibility to our suppliers. This is why it was
again important for us to intensify our cooperation
with our suppliers in the first half of 2014.
One example is the company G. Th. FREESE GmbH
& Co. KG from Bremen, with whom we consolidated our cooperation in the form of numerous workshops. Jörg Buchholz, CEO of Freese, was highly satisfied with the running of the workshop. „Thanks
to the very frank discussions, we were able to identify the cost drivers with respect to the installation of deck coverings and in turn effect long-term
improvements to our cost structure. The framework contract we have now concluded for the next
three years gives us planning security.“ From the
perspective of MEYER WERFT, the outcome is also
thoroughly positive. The workshop team, consisting
of employees from both Freese and MEYER WERFT,
questioned all the details of the cooperation. Hence
were we able to considerably and sustainably reduce the overall costs, but we also successfully enhanced our strategic partnership with Freese.
We will also be successively intensifying our cooperations with other important partners. An excellent
supplier base is a fundamental requirement of continued long-term competitiveness. It has for a long
time no longer been enough merely to guarantee

supplies. More importantly, all who are part of the
delivery chain face the new challenges and develop
together.
For this reason, we will be conducting an intensive
analysis of our supplier base. A new assessment system will help us to progressively evaluate strengths
and weaknesses throughout the entire delivery
chain. The focus is not only on minimum requirements in terms of quality, punctuality of delivery
and a joint definition of cost structure, but also on
the various interfaces between the supplier and
the shipyard. Conducting talks and joint workshops
with suppliers allows us to define the overriding
potential for development and improvement and
to directly address the derived measures to the relevant organisational units. This is an ongoing process
that does not end in an agreement (contract) but is
performed continually.
Even now, there is great willingness among suppliers to face these challenges together. We also
need the input of our most important partners to
enable us to eliminate our own problems, together
with the MEYER WERFT CIP department. The overall process is not a one-way street. Only together
can we remain competitive in the long term.

PILOT PROJECT FOR SOCIAL AUDITS OF SHIPYARD SUPPLIERS
TÜV Rheinland and MEYER WERFT are working
together: the two organisations have concluded
a contract for an initial pilot project, in which the
future qualification of partner companies working
on the basis of work contracts will be inspected in
accordance with clearly defined and comprehensive
criteria. These social audits will be conducted by
TÜV Rheinland and they will make it possible to test
companies‘ compliance with all applicable regulations more systematically and inclusively. Possible
deviations will then be virtually eliminated.
Following on from this first pilot project, TÜV
Rheinland will systematically inspect and audit all
of MEYER WERFT‘s partner firms working on the
basis of work contracts. Only successfully audited
companies can subsequently become partners of
the shipyard. The inspections by experts from TÜV
Rheinland will cover entire operations and they will
be based on a comprehensive catalogue of criteria,
including working conditions, working hours, pay,
and accommodation.
CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT PROCESS (CIP)
WORKSHOPS ON STRATEGIC COOPERATION
To intensify the cooperations at the interfaces between MEYER WERFT and its partner companies in
the implementation phase, a number of joint workshops are currently being organised for our suppliers, in which the CIP management is also taking
part. This makes it possible to detect optimisation
potential and to define and implement appropriate
measures. Possible interface problems can be evaluated by the direct involvement of the CIP management in the talks. Moreover, improvements can be
implemented directly in the shipyard‘s organisation. The workshops analyse and address the process
chain as a whole, from the ordering stage to the
final handover.
NEW LEGAL FORM
MEYER WERFT GmbH has been renamed MEYER
WERFT GmbH & Co. KG. Similarly, NEPTUN WERFT
GmbH will in future be known as NEPTUN WERFT
GmbH & Co. KG. Upon merging into this new legal
form, the previous distinction between the owner
and operator companies will no longer exist. Combining the owner and operator companies in this
way will serve to strengthen the shipyards and secure their locations in Papenburg und Rostock in
the long term. For example, it will lead to a considerable simplification in administrative procedures
within the company. The new legal form is also
accompanied by a reinforcement of the company‘s
equity capital.

IN BRIEF
PURCHASING DEPARTMENT AT THE SMM 2014
On 9-12 September, the SMM, the leading exhibition for shipping, marine and ocean technology
in Hamburg will be opening its doors for the 26th
time. After attracting a record number of visitors in
2012, the organisers are again expecting more than
2,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries, along with
over 50,000 visitors at this year‘s event, the motto
of which will be ‚Keeping on Course‘. As in previous
years, the purchasing departments of both MEYER
WERFT and NEPTUN WERFT will again be maintaining a joint exhibition stand in Hall B4.EG at stand
212 throughout the event.
QUANTUM OF THE SEAS SOON TO BE DELIVERED
The Quantum of the Seas is nearing completion. After undocking in August, the ship with the construction number S.697 will remain at the shipyard‘s fitting-out berth until the end of September, when it
will make its way along the Ems to its destination
of Eemshaven. From there, it will sail towards Bremerhaven, during which the last adjustments will
be performed. Upon arrival the final fittings will be
made, before the vessel is finally handed over to its
owner, Royal Caribbean International, at the end of
October. Once delivered, the Quantum of the Seas
will not only feature the latest in environmental
engineering but it will above all offer an exciting
range of innovative entertainment services.
FULL ORDER BOOKS AT NEPTUN WERFT
After the shipping company Viking River Cruises
secured itself an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in March of this year by launching 16 new
river cruise vessels within a 24-hour period, the
company‘s success story continues unabated. NEPTUN WERFT in Warnemünde also has a further 11
river cruise ships in its order books. Like their predecessors, the vessels are 134.90 metres long and
11.45 metres wide, with room for up to 190 passengers, and are deployed on a variety of rivers in Europe. Viking River Cruises and NEPTUN WERFT have
been working together since 2011; it has meanwhile supplied the shipping company with a total of 32
river cruise craft.

SONNE RESEARCH SHIP LAUNCHED
The SONNE was launched on 11 July by Chancellor
Angela Merkel at NEPTUN WERFT. The research ship
had already passed a number of major tests, first
sailing through the Ems and then undergoing its
first adjustment and trial voyages. In the coming
months, the ship will be put through a number of
tests in the West Atlantic and the Caribbean to ascertain its scientific capability.
The new SONNE research ship has a length of 116
metres and a width of 20.6 metres and features a
high level of energy efficiency. From January 2015,
the new SONNE will commence its activities in the
field of marine scientific research.

IN OPERATION: NEW BLASTING, STRAIGHTENING AND PRIMING SYSTEM
The new innovative and environmentally friendly
plant will enable ND Coatings not only to perform
the blasting and priming of sheet metal panels and
profiles for MEYER WERFT but also to straighten
them – all in a fully automated process.
The new blasting, straightening and priming plant
has an investment volume of 12 million euros; it is
178 metres long, 28 metres wide, and can process
sheet metal panels at a maximum speed of five metres per minute. Environmentally friendly solutions
have been developed and implemented in the new
production line, such as the use of water-based
shop primers. Particular attention has been given
to ensuring that plant equipment is state-of-the-art
and energy-efficient.
The aim is to satisfy the exacting demands of the
customer when it comes to the finishing of sheet
metal panels and profiles. High quality and adherence to delivery deadlines are just two aspects. At
the end of the pre-treatment process chain, the
new and innovative plant is able to deliver straightened panels to MEYER WERFT. The straightening
procedure takes place in the process just before the
steel production, which significantly improves qua-
lity. The system is dimensioned to cover the growing requirements of both the shipyard itself and its
strategic partners.
Installation of the new blasting, straightening and
priming plant including cranes and other required
infrastructure commenced a few weeks ago at
Papenburg‘s southern industrial harbour. The plant
became operational in July 2014, to allow adjustment and performance tests to be carried out.

Summit in Essen.
For ND Coatings GmbH, winner of the ’Top 100‘
award, innovative thinking has been part and parcel of the company‘s operations since its inception.
Indeed, upon its foundation in 2011, innovation
was strategically anchored in its business plan. In
only three years, the company, which operates in
the fields of corrosion protection, surface finishes
and insulations, has developed into a close strategic
partner for MEYER WERFT, primarily thanks to its
ability to come up with new ideas. Quality-improving process innovations led to an increase in sales
of around 70 percent last year. A lean organisation,
short communication channels, highly modern facilities, and innovative and environmentally friendly

success.
