They are extremely dedicated to helping our residents with utmost compassion and care. Here are their stories. Leitacia Ware or better known to everyone as “Tada” was born and raised here in San Diego. She is the youngest of three children. In middle school Tada was a part of the dance club, then attended Mount Miguel High School. While in school she playing Varsity Soccer, as well as Track and Field. She graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor’s in Science and Health Administration and is currently attending Kaplan College to become an LVN. She has a daughter named Janae who is in the second grade. Just like her mom, Janae loves to play soccer and is in dance. Some of Tada’s hobbies include reading, listening to music, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She recently has been going to the gym to get back into shape and is motivated to do great! One of Tada’s favorite vacations was when she and her family took a road trip to Northern California. They went to Sacramento, Hearst Castle, Redwood Forest, San Francisco, and Monterey. In the next five years Tada hopes all her hard work will pay off as she becomes a licensed nurse as well as owning her own home and having her family and friends fill her life up with love and happiness. SUNGARDEN TERRACE, MARCH 2015 Caregiver Spotlights Continued ... Carla Moreno was born right here in San Diego. Growing up in the Chula Vista area, she attended Castle Park High School and loved going to the football games. There was a pizza parlor right next to the school where she and her friends would hang out. Carla has one son named Alex who is all grown up now and thriving. When she isn’t working, she loves to volunteer her time to help people in her community learn and understand the Bible. Also she enjoys camping, having bonfires at the beach, hosting dance parties, and BBQs with her friends and family. Her favorite vacation was when she went to Hawaii for two weeks. While there she fell in love with the botanical gardens, waterfalls, all the wild pigs, chickens, and peacocks running free. In the next five years, Carla hopes to see herself working in Hawaii as a nursing assistant and continuing to volunteer her time in Bible teaching. Arminda Beltran Lopez was born in Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines. She grew up in Malolos City, a very historical place where the Barasoain Church resides; the picture of the church is on the back of the 10 Peso Bill. She went to school at Marcelo H. Del Pilar High School where she was a varsity Volleyball player. Before Arminda came to America she worked as an X-ray technician and then worked on a cruise ship for six years. She decided to move to the U.S. to support her four children and four grandchildren who live in the Philippines. One of her daughters is moving to America very soon. Arminda’s hobbies include going to the shooting range, horseback riding, and fishing. Her dream vacation is to go on a cruise with her family and attend church mass in Rome, Italy. She was recently married in 2012 to a musician and since then has developed an interest in all types of music. In the next five years, she would love to see herself running a small facility or becoming an activity director. Tami T. SUNGARDEN TERRACE, MARCH 2015 Caregiver Spotlights Continued ... Traveling with Dementia For people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, travel can be stressful. Being away from a familiar environment and established routines may result in an increase in disorientation and agitation. However, with careful planning, it is quite possible to travel safely and well with someone in the early stages of the disease. Someone in the middle stage would present more of a challenge, and travel for someone in the late stage would not be recommended under normal circumstances. To Travel or Not to Travel? If the answer is yes to any of the following questions, travel would most likely not be tolerated well and further consideration would be indicated: Are there periods of agitation, aggressive behavior, and significant disorientation even when in the home environment? Being in unfamiliar surroundings will only make this worse. Is wandering a concern? If so, wandering may increase in unfamiliar surroundings. Is there fear of new places and experiences? If so, the new sights, sounds, and people could prove over Whelming. Helpful Tips Once the decision has been made to proceed with the travel plan, there are a number of considerations and preparations to think about in order to ensure a successful outcome. If traveling by plane, try to schedule the flight on a low travel day (generally Tuesday–Thursday). As much as possible, avoid traveling during peak travel periods, such as holiday and summer vacation times. Prior to travel, inquire about and arrange for airport transportation services to assist in getting you to and from the gate. When booking the flight, inform the airline of any special needs you might have and let the security and flight attendants know you are traveling with someone with dementia. Make sure the person is wearing full identification that is not easily removed and is complete with name, address, destination, and contact numbers. It is recommended that travel companions carry a current photograph of the person as well. Accompany the person to and from the restroom. Do not leave them alone. If traveling by car, many of the previous considerations remain the same. In addition, set up a comfort able place in the vehicle conducive to napping and be prepared to stop as often as needed for comfort and stress reduction. If staying in a hotel, inform the staff ahead of time of any special needs. Be prepared to share the room and secure the door to prevent wandering at night. One recommendation would be a childproof doorknob cover. Be sure to take an adequate supply of medications, up-to-date medical information, a list of emergency contacts, photocopies of important medical and legal documents (such as a living will and a power of attorney). Make sure you have enough people to assist you every step of the way. Well-planned trips can be fun, exciting, and worth every bit of time and effort put into making them happen. www.activityconnection.com SUNGARDEN TERRACE, MARCH 2015
