Celebrating three decades of storytelling
AUTUMN 2015 MUSICAL Wicked CABARET LA SOIRÉE SPECIAL EVENT Brisbane Baroque Celebrating three decades of storytelling Welcome Hello. 2015 is QPAC’s 30th anniversary and we invite you to celebrate this milestone with us. There is much on offer across our stages and outdoor venues, special programs that are the result of a number of wonderful partnerships with artists and companies we enjoyed collaborating with across three decades. One of the most rewarding things about creating art in Queensland is the responsive audiences who are keen to try new things. It goes without saying that you, our audiences, are critical to our work. The conversation that takes place between artists and audiences, in that space between the stage and auditorium is what makes live performance magical. It’s also why it is constantly changing. Feeling the energy in a room shift and respond to what is being played live in front of you is something that you have to be there to share in…there really is no substitute. Over the course of 30 years QPAC has become part of the fabric of the city and a touchstone in the lives of many of you, who saw your first live performance here, graduated from university in the Concert Hall, or simply had an incredible night out here. I hope you feel QPAC belongs to your community and that you are able to join us in celebrating three decades of storytelling. Thank you. Alison Mackay (creator of The Galileo Project) has woven together a magical journey where audiences step into the world of Bach and Vivaldi by visiting the very buildings where the great composers and their patrons once walked, played, and listened; and includes detailed projections of the now-famous paintings that they would have known when new. In this concert, the music is provided by the period instruments of the renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. Narrator Blair Williams is the tour guide, leading us through the hallways and salons, sharing stories of the people who lived, worked and dreamed in these remarkable homes. 4 MARCH CONCERT HALL 44 QPAC.COM.AU PRESENTED BY MUSICA VIVA CL ASSICAL QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Song to Symphony Frère Jacques morphs into the Mahler Symphony No.1. The simplicity of folk songs, world music and music of cultural significance has been the inspiration for composers throughout time. Discover the songs, woven through music, on a journey through time and style that reveal the source of composer inspiration, from The Little Birch Tree growing into Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4 to national anthems woven into the 1812 Overture. EDUCATION EVENT, PUBLIC WELCOME. QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA At the Ballet ‘Everyone at the theatre is raving about my music…’ wrote Tchaikovsky during rehearsals for his first ballet, Swan Lake, and his unerring instinct for music that moves dancers and emotions alike never left him. Just listen to it in modern ads. It’s the rhythm, of course, but most of all it’s in the melody, animating the spirits of the The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Only Coppelia and Giselle can rival them in popularity and in their memorable tunes, as you’ll hear in this delightful musical morning At the Ballet hosted by the entertaining Guy Noble. 5 MARCH 8 MARCH CONCERT HALL CONCERT HALL PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 45 CL ASSICAL The Sixteen THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN After a sell-out 35 venue UK tour in 2013, The Sixteen bring their exquisite a capella program, The Queen of Heaven to Australia. As well as works by Italian Renaissance master, Giovanni Palestrina, the program features the ever-popular Allegri Miserere and a new setting of the Miserere by award-winning British composer, James MacMillan. Now in its 35th year, The Sixteen is recognised as one of world’s greatest choral ensembles, bringing total commitment to the music it performs. Drawing inspiration from the passions of Founder and Conductor Harry Christophers CBE, The Sixteen has a special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, bringing fresh insights into Baroque and early Classical music as well as an inspiring diversity of 20th and 21st century music. 8 MARCH CONCERT HALL 46 QPAC.COM.AU A tiny soundbite of heaven” THE TIMES, UK PRESENTED BY QPAC CL ASSICAL Fritzsch & Shlomo Mintz QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The majestic solitude of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto (1905 version) provides the perfect vehicle for this collaboration between QSO’s two biggest names — revered Laureate Conductor Johannes Fritzsch and incoming Soloist-in-Residence Shlomo Mintz. Like the Sibelius, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1 sounds Scandinavian, even if meant to depict the Sahara desert. Sunrise from Also Sprach Zarathustra by R. Strauss is equally famous as wide-horizon daybreak music, ever since Stanley Kubrick used it in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Choose a morning or evening concert time. QSO CONGRATULATES QPAC ON ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY 2015. AS QPAC’S RESIDENT ORCHESTRA, WE ARE DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THESE CONCERTS AS A TRIBUTE TO OUR MAJOR VENUE PARTNER. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 13 & 14 MARCH CONCERT HALL QPAC.COM.AU 47 CL ASSICAL AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Reflections on Gallipoli QUEENSLAND YOUTH SYMPHONY One of Australia’s great storytellers, Neil Armfield, directs this heartfelt exploration of our ANZAC story through music, spoken text and visual imagery, where an Australian’s elegy for his friend brushes shoulders with the words of the father of modern Turkey. Set to music in a new work by Carl Vine featuring soprano Taryn Fiebig, the program also features English works that are evocative of the era, including Elgar’s Sospiri and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, as well as the music of the Ottoman Empire and 20th century Turkey. The Queensland Youth Symphony opens its 2015 season with internationally acclaimed soloists and an Australian Premiere. The concert begins with Leonard Bernstein’s dazzling overture to his musical Candide. Anticipating QYO’s 50th anniversary year in 2016, QYS performs Larry Sitsky’s apparitions, an Australian work commissioned in 1966 for the first ever QYO concert and dedicated to conductor John Curro AM MBE. The Australian premiere of German composer Heinz Störrle’s Concerto for Brass Quintet and Orchestra follows, showcasing Brisbane’s brilliant Best of Brass quintet before the final work, the mighty 20th century classic, Concerto for Orchestra by Lutoslawski. 23 MARCH 28 MARCH CONCERT HALL CONCERT HALL PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 48 Best of Brass CL ASSICAL QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA QSO & Mischa Maisky QSO & Sarah Chang A night of music so emotional it could make a stone weep. Mischa Maisky’s famously warm tone will capture the aching, yearning feeling for home in Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, written in New York as he sat on the docks watching the steamers heading back toward Europe. And then, prepare for inexhaustible melodies to tear at your heartstrings, brass fanfares to raise the roof, and some of music’s most riotous explosions of orchestral colour to pin you to the back of your seat in Yan Pascal Tortelier’s grand vision of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4. She auditioned for the New York Philharmonic at age eight, and the next day was playing live with them, without rehearsal. Sarah Chang still brings that immediacy to the stage, in Bruch’s showstopping Violin Concerto with its immortal finale. Shostakovich too flirts with danger in his Symphony No.5 about struggle for survival within oppression, with esteemed British conductor, Jessica Cottis, ensuring the slow movement brings radiance into darkness, and warmth into the bitter Soviet winter. This concert also features Chen Qigang’s Enchantements oubliés. 2 APRIL 18 APRIL CONCERT HALL CONCERT HALL PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 49 CL ASSICAL AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA Vivaldi Unwired A shared belief in the transformative power of music and a spirit of intrepid adventure led award-winning British composer Max Richter to take a baroque classic – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – and reimagine it for orchestra and synthesiser, and for Paul Dyer AO to take up the challenge to present the recomposed piece with period instruments, and to take the reins of the synthesiser himself. The result is an audacious creation that takes the audience through the same landscape of spring, summer, autumn and winter but with a renewed sense of the genius of Vivaldi’s work. Staying faithful to the structure of the four concertos, Richter’s Recomposed Four Seasons is in turns beautiful, peaceful and serene, yet also wild, passionate and intensely emotional. Vivaldi Unwired includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, widely recognised as amongst the best baroque compositions written, C.P.E Bach’s Concerto for flute Wq 166 (arr. soprano saxophone) featuring Brandenburg favourite Christina Leonard, Vivaldi’s Concerto for two violins op.3 no. 8 RV 522 from L’estro armonico and finally discover Vivaldi, the indestructible baroque genius in a new light with Richter Recomposed – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, beautifully led by Guest Concertmaster Brendan Joyce. 11 MAY & 19 MAY CONCERT HALL 50 QPAC.COM.AU PHOTO PAUL DYER AO, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA CL ASSICAL Don Juan In a world premiere, Lord Byron’s Don Juan theatrically compares the life of Lord Byron himself with the hero of his greatest literary creation, Don Juan. Performed by acclaimed actor/director Tama Matheson and internationally renowned guitarist Karin Schaupp, the show moves seamlessly between the steamy world of Don Juan and the scandalous life of Lord Byron (Matheson) himself. Matheson captivatingly marries Byron’s life with the poem, moving between the real world and the fictional world of Don Juan. The setting is brought to life by Schaupp through the evocative Spanish guitar music of Turina, Pujol and Tarrega and by stepping into the drama to become part of the play herself. As the show goes on, Byron and Juan become reflections of each other and it grows increasingly difficult to tell where fact ends and fiction begins until they are both tied together in a great, heart-wrenching conclusion. After all, as Byron himself famously put it, ‘truth is strange, stranger than fiction.’ Full of the wit, charm, elegance, adventure and horror of Byron’s great poem, but also the deep personal pathos of its great author, Don Juan will reveal a deep portrait of one of the greatest creative minds of the Romantic era, picked out in relief by his own creation. Don’t miss this exciting, varied and engrossing experience in the theatre. 17 MAY CONCERT HALL, REVERSE MODE PRESENTED BY QPAC QPAC.COM.AU 51 CL ASSICAL QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA QSO, Alondra & Sergio In glorious Russian colour, Rimsky-Korsakov weaves musical tales of magic and mystery from the Arabian Nights, the concertmaster’s solo violin as spell-binding as the nightly tales Scheherazade tells to save her life. Meanwhile Sergio Tiempo brings powerhouse pianistics to heart-on-sleeve Tchaikovsky in his Piano Concerto No.1, and Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra shows why she’s fast becoming one of the brightest stars in classical music. This program will also be performed on 23 May. 22 MAY CONCERT HALL 52 QPAC.COM.AU PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CL ASSICAL QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA QSO, Alondra & Sergio Its premiere caused a riot, but whether it’s a scandal or a quintessential classic, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring picks you up in a wave of energy, leaving you invigorated and dazzled. In glorious Russian colour, Rimsky-Korsakov weaves musical tales of magic and mystery in Scheherazade, while Sergio Tiempo brings powerhouse pianistics to heart-onsleeve Tchaikovsky with his Piano Concerto No.1. QUEENSLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA London Symphony The Queensland Youth Symphony presents a program of romantic masterpieces and a world premiere. The concert opens with the first ever performance of Concertato for Orchestra by Melbourne-based composer Allan Zavod who specialises in the classical-jazz fusion style. Four outstanding musicians from QYS then take centre stage as soloists in Schumann’s exuberant Konzertstück for four french horns and orchestra. The final work is the wonderfully evocative London Symphony by Vaughan Williams. 23 MAY 30 MAY CONCERT HALL CONCERT HALL PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA 53 EXHIBITION QPAC 30 HONOUR •CELEBRATE •INVEST The south bank of the Brisbane River was a gathering place and a hub for entertainment long before the building of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. First as a meeting place for the local Indigenous population, then, after white settlement, as a port, a rail head, and the location for theatres, clubs and dance halls, this stretch of river bank already had a rich history before the ambitious Cultural Centre was planned. When QPAC officially opened on 20 April 1985, it became a vital part of this story. A place for people to gather and to explore the diversity of human experience: to laugh, to cry, to be challenged, to be entertained. Through costumes, artefacts, photographs and video, QPAC 30 surveys this diverse performing arts heritage. Drawing on the collection of the QPAC Museum, the exhibition honours what was happening before QPAC opened, celebrates the past 30 years of extraordinary activity, and the partners who helped make it a reality, and looks to plans for the future.
