Spring 2013 Buggy Barn Technique Class All Levels Instructor: Vicki 1 Session Fee: $20 + Book Saturday, June 22nd, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm This technique is a “must have” in your repertoire. You will learn another creative use for freezer paper and then practice “letting go” of matching seams while making a quilt that is fun and uniquely yours! You can pick from any of the Buggy Barn Crazy Piecing patterns or books for your project. The store sample is Liberty Star, with kits to match, but come in with your choice of pattern and get some help picking your own kit – Undeniably Crazy, Certifiably Crazy, Stir Crazy, Frightfully Crazy and other books and individual patterns can be used for class. Tubing it Pillowcase All Levels Instructor: Diane 1 Session Fee: $20 + Book Saturday, June 22nd, 2:00 - 4:00 pm Have you wondered how to make a french seam pillowcase? Come join us for make-and-take pillowcases. This method encloses the seams around the cuff so that you don’t see exposed edges. Single Small Pine All Levels Instructor: Sandi 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Tuesday, June 25th, 6:00 - 8:30 pm This is a single pine tree from the Tall Pines Pattern. Start with this tree using the Quilted Jewel templates and you’ll be able to easily make any of the trees or any other Quilted Jewel patterns. Fabric kits are available. Class Supply Lists and Other Information • For each class there is a list of supplies needed. Please stop in to pick up a supply list for each class you register for. Supply lists are also available over the phone. All supplies needed for classes will be available at the shop. • If a class requires a sewing machine, make sure your machine is in good working order. This will save you a lot of frustration in the long run. • Quilt classes are generally for the top only. Help with finishing your quilt is always available at the store and classes on finishing will be available periodically. • Try to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class so you will have time to get your supplies organized and purchase any additional supplies you may need. • Wash your fabrics prior to class. This will prevent bleeding or shrinkage of your finished product. • In consideration of classmates, children should not accompany you to class. Quilt Retreat Spring 2013 All Levels April 3rd-7th: three-, four-, or five-day option Fee: $175 - $320 depending on nights and room Come join us for a weekend away with nothing but quilting, good food, and, well, quilting!!! Hopefully by the time you receive this the weather is getting warmer, but don't abandon your sewing. We have classes to tempt you. Remember that club in May is a week later than normal. This is because I will be at market during the normal week buying fabric so I'm sure you all won't mind! The ad for the Twin Cities Shop Hop is on this page. It promises to be great fun and you'll get a Twin Cities Treat! What could be better than that? We are also taking signups for the State Shop Hop buses. Don't wait too long as these will fill up quickly. For $39.95 you will take 2 buses either the first (Aug 2nd & 3rd) or second (August 9th and 10th) weekend of the hop. There are 6 different pick up and drop off locations. The buses will run from 8 am to about 5 pm depending on how prompt you are with your shopping. Lunch is not provided but a stop for lunch will be part of your day. All shops in the Twin Cities section will be visited. I'm not sure you can get gas for the price of the bus...at least not for my Suburban! We will also be beginning the Wind in the Whiskers Block of the Month as soon as the fabric arrives. We make a sampler quilt top of 9 different blocks that help develop skills, achieve accurate results and increase confidence in quilting. Basic quilt making techniques include supplies and fabric selections, rotary cutting, machine piecing, quilt construction, border application and binding. Our class will discuss quilting options for finishing your sampler quilt top. In class we will make paper pieced basket blocks that can be made into a small wall hanging. After making these, you will have enough confidence to make any paper pieced block. New designs, new techniques and fresh ideas make it easier than ever. Hand stitching has the advantage of a take-along project you can do anywhere. Take this class and learn the basics of hand embroidery or update your skills with some new ideas. Plus, it’s a great way to meet other hand-stitch enthusiasts. Produce smooth curves and sharp points using an old technique with a modern twist. No starch, burned fingers, fabric marking or overlay sheets! Tired of machine quilting “in the ditch”? Well, drop those feed dogs and take off with all the lovely quilting stencils that you really want to use. This hands-on class will focus on freehand quilting with information and demonstrations of quilting with a darning foot, nylon thread and various other specialty threads. Proper techniques for quilting full size quilts will also be discussed. Students must know how to remove, cover or lower feed dogs and must have a darning foot. Chubby Charmer Bag All Levels Instructor: Chris 2 Sessions Fee: $25 + Pattern Thursdays, April 25th, and May 9th, 6:00 - 8:30pm This great bag uses a charm pack and coordinating yardage for a quick and easy project. You will learn the basics of bag construction. The store sample also uses some of our new metallic floss for embellishment. Come see the store sample and you will want one for your very own! Japanese Jigsaw All Levels Instructor: Vicki 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Saturday, April 27th, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm While many traditional Japanese quilt blocks are pieced by hand, in this class we show you how to use a template to easily cut and machine piece your own “pine bark” quilt. The pattern includes directions to make the quilt in two sizes, small wall quilt or throw quilt. This project is fat quarter and layer cake friendly and looks great in many styles of fabric. May Flowers All Levels Instructor: Micky 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Tuesday, May 7th, 6:00 - 8:30 pm Need something to brighten up your home for spring? Make this mini that fits on a 12" wire frame. Fusible appliqué techniques will be covered in class along with guidance on making small quilts. We have kits made up just like the shop sample. Bag Construction Made Easy All Levels Instructor: Jill 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Saturday, May 11th, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm This class will focus on construction of charming purses and bags using your creativity and the sewing skills you already have! By the end of the class you will have a finished “Lunch Bag” making you the envy of the bag-lunch crowd. The bags can also double as a unique and lasting gift bag filled with your best wishes to someone special. In addition, we will review and practice some of the steps, like zippers, bottoms and finishing seams that sometimes stifle one’s creativity! All of this in one productive session! Bistro Apron All Levels Instructor: Chris 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Thursday, May 16th, 6:00 - 8:30 pm Entertain in style with the Bistro Apron. Make this apron with an interchangeable panel to keep it neat and clean while having a chic look. You should be able to finish this project in only one session! Kits using the same fabrics as the store sample are available or pick your own! 3D Folded Blocks All Levels Instructor: June 1 Session Fee: $20 + Book Saturday, May 18th, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm Explore fabric folding and layering to form three-dimensional versions of traditional pieced blocks. You will be working on a 3 block table topper or wall hanging. Fabric kits like the store sample are available. No special tools are required to make these blocks. Great for simple gifts, retreat projects, and guild challenges. Once you have completed the class, you will have many more projects in the book to challenge yourself with! Kaleidoscope Quilt All Levels Instructor: Diane 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Saturday, May 18th, 2:00 - 4:30 pm Triangles, triangles, triangles…with a template to simplify your cutting. Every time you look at this quilt, a different “pattern” will emerge in your eye, just like with the kaleidoscope toys we had as a child. There are lots of points in this quilt, but don’t be afraid! Helter Skelter All Levels Instructor: June 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Saturday, May 25th, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm Don’t be afraid…this quilt has nothing to do with Charles Manson. The name describes how the blocks seem to float on a background. Our quilt is done in flannels with a Minkee back…oooh so soft and cuddly. Learn the “Helter Skelter” method of quilt construction. This quilt is fat quarter friendly. Come in and feel it. That’s all it will take for you to want one for your very own. Bridget’s Bagettes All Levels Instructor: Jill 1 Session Fee: $20 + Pattern Saturday, June 1st, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm No, it's not a cooking class. This is a very cute little tote that will introduce you to vinyl and zippers. In no time, you will have your own baguette! You should be able to complete one baguette in class! Cabin Fever Advanced Instructor: Julie 3 Sessions Fee: $60 + Pattern May 5th, June 9th and 23rd, 1:00 - 5:00 pm Cabin Fever is a quilt that is made from all fat quarters- for the 60x 60- 25 dark and 25 light quarters. Log cabin cutouts is an add on pattern sale that uses the cutaway pieces from Cabin Fever to make a companion quilt. Join Julie Arrowood, Certified Instructor for Judy Niemeyer for another new pattern from Quiltworx. Cabin Fever is a quilt that is made from just fat quarters. Paper piecing gives this age old classic precision you will appreciate. Quick cutting techniques, so many different ways to lay out your colors, and sew lines that leave you with the flattest Log Cabin Top you will ever sew, makes this pattern a staple. Add to that, a cutaway process that allows for the insertion of a paper pieced arc and cutaway pieces that build a companion quilt called Log Cabin Cutouts. It's Quilted, Now What? Radiant Star Advanced Instructor: Mary G. 2 Sessions Fee: $30 + Book Wednesday, June 12th, and 26th, 6:00 - 9:00 pm The Radiant Star has traditionally been one of the most recognizable quilt patterns. But many quilters have shied away from undertaking what appears to be a difficult pattern. By using strip piecing techniques and Eleanor Burns' detailed instructions, making this star is easy and fun to put together. Fabric kits available. Scalloped Placemats All Levels Instructor: Cindy H. 2 Sessions Fee: $25 + Book Mondays, June 17th and 24th, 6:30 - 8:30 pm A new technique for curved piecing comes to us from Joyce Lawrence Cambron in her new book A New Spin on Curved Piecing. The Scalloped Placemat pattern is the introductory project to learn the technique and is the lead-in to several unique projects. So what’s so different? It’s using freezer paper to guide the curved sewing. If you’re intrigued, come in to see the sample and the book. We have kits to make the placemats just like the sample or you can pick your own fabrics.
