2014-2015 Annual Report DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Transforming urban Portland one student at a time DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 1 11/30/15 12:39 PM “You can perform miracles by touching the hearts of those entrusted to your care.”* DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 2 11/30/15 12:39 PM Dear Friends and Families of De La Salle North Catholic High School, As I write these words I am reminded that it is with each new year we start all over again: a new class of 9th graders begins and a group of seniors graduates; our grant writing and fundraising events need to be planned; and there are the new teachers and staff to say hello to and for those who have moved on, we must say goodbye. Change happens here and we continue to grow through this process. So, in preparing to write this letter I spent some time reflecting on the changes over the last year and about our present state of affairs here at our school. It continues to amaze me as to what we accomplish with and for the young people who come through our doors each day. They are remarkable people who have made a choice to be here. They are the ones who every day wake up and give it their best effort in school and out in the work world. I am also aware that we have some challenges that we continue to work on. We cannot always provide our students all the resources we would like to. We don’t have the most modern facilities available for our students: no gym to hold a homecoming game in or a dance, no fields to play soccer or baseball on or just to hang out with your friends on a sunny spring day, limited space to conduct our classes and science labs, and our fine arts and our technology needs are ever present. But what we do have are our students (and it is simply and most profoundly all about the students) and our dedicated faculty and staff. Of course, it will be nice, one day, when we have all of the above facility space, but for now, I will thank God for the families who entrust their children to us to allow us to impart knowledge, professional-work experience, and the opportunity to help them develop a sense of self and a generous desire to help others as they travel on their faith journeys. And I continually thank all my incredible colleagues. I hope they always wake up every day knowing that they have the chance to truly help transform the lives of our young people. And then there are all of you who read this letter who have either been with us from the very beginning or those of you who this was your first year supporting our mission…thanks to all of you. Please always remember that it is because of your sincere generosity that we are able to continue this vital work. And a very special thank you to the Christian Brothers of the San Francisco New Orleans District and their wonderful lay colleagues who have and continue to be such a vital partner and supporter of De La Salle North Catholic. Thank you, Tim Hennessy President * Quotes from the founder of Lasillian schools (St. John Baptist de la Salle 1651-1719) DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 3 11/30/15 12:39 PM Our Students ● 80% students of color ● 88% Catholic or Christian Academics ● Rigorous Curriculum that exceeds state requirements Athletics & Activities ● 8 athletic teams with over 35% of student participation ● 60% eligible for Federal Lunch Program ● Unique “Academic Resource Center” to provide intense one-on-one tutoring ● Activities: Student Council, Fine Arts, Choir On average, students enter 9th grade 1.5 years behind academically. ● Small class sizes ● Clubs: Heritage, Drama, Sci-Fi, Poetry, Constitution Law, Anime, Compassion, Computer Programming, Green/Earth, Ski & Snowboarding Faith & Service De La Salle North Catholic is founded on the five core principles of a Lasallian school: ● Concern for the Poor and Social Justice ● Faith in the Presence of God ● Quality Education ● Respect for all Persons ● Inclusive Community All students and staff are required to provide community service during each school year. MEASURE OF SUCCESS 98%- Class of 2015 acceptance to college 90%- of this class entered college in the Fall of 2015 1 Gates Millenium Scholar (4 yr Full Ride) $3.9 million Scholarship monies! 11/30/15 12:39 PM ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Zarinah Mustafa (’12) (Her speech to the audience at the Fall 2015 Scholarship Dinner) Some would like to believe that one’s success is determined by their ability or their work ethic alone, but I beg to differ. Success is where opportunity meets preparation. There are many capable, intelligent, and hardworking youth who slip through the cracks simply because they did not receive the proper preparation or opportunity to realize their full potential. De La Salle is a unique and, quite frankly, magical place because it serves students who would otherwise not be given the opportunity or preparation to achieve highly in the classroom, in leadership positions and in the corporate setting. I am living proof the magic that can happen here. My name is Zarinah Mustafa and I am a 2012 graduate of De La Salle. Currently, I am a graduating Senior Political Science Major, Philosophy Minor at Spelman College, the first and oldest college for Black women in the United States. I was awarded the Z-man scholarship to attend De La Salle the summer after my freshmen year at a much larger public high school. Looking back on it, I realize now that this was a momentous and life changing occurrence for me. I had always had dreams of higher achievement so that I could take care of my family and give back to my community, but my goals did not seem realistic or reachable until I came to De La Salle and saw people who looked like me or with similar backgrounds as wmy own, both at the school and at my corporate internship, who were achieving success that I had only dreamt of. I never thought the little Black girl whose mother was sentenced to ten years in prison when she was 11 years old could beat the odds. I thought that when people looked at me, they would only see my background, but not the person I am because of it. At De La Salle, the staff and teachers saw me for me and for everything that I represent. They saw me as a student in the first ever AP Calculus class at De La Salle, as the leading role of Macbeth in school play, as member of the school’s first Constitution Law team, and as the feisty, passionate young girl who had the potential to be great. They poured into me, giving me the opportunity to intern at Oregon Health and Sciences University for two years and at Nike, Brand Jordan my senior year. I was afforded the opportunity to travel to New Haven Connecticut for a diversity program and college tour where I visited the likes of Yale University and Columbia University, amongst other institutions. Being exposed to collegiate life as a sophomore in high school showed me what could potentially await me in college. It showed me that I was brave enough to go away from my family and form connections with other students—it was truly a great leadership experience. In addition to that leadership opportunity, I served as Co-President of De La Salle’s Executive Leadership Committee under the great Mr. Edward Zupcic, and founded and served as President of the Heritage Committee. These leadership positions helped to prepare for one of my greatest moments at Spelman. In February I ran for and was elected the 74th President of the Spelman Student Government Association. Although I naturally doubted myself at times, the leadership opportunities I was exposed to at De La Salle helped to show me that I am capable of being a great leader. I was prepared to take advantage of the great opportunity that was bestowed upon me. Not only did De La Salle expose me to great opportunity, but prepared me to take advantage of it as well. There is this special little lady who sits right down stairs in the scholarship office, named Mrs. Barbara Ward. Mrs. Ward worked and continues to work tirelessly to ensure that all of her students are college ready and that upon acceptance, they can afford to attend the college of their choice. Mrs. Ward, though technically only part time, would come in early and stay late to read scholarship essays, send off scholarship applications, and talk college with students. With Mrs. Ward’s unwavering support, I was able to win 11 scholarships to cover almost my whole first year at Spelman, which was then $42,000 a year. Three of those scholarships have covered almost 50% of my tuition for all four of my years at Spelman. I am forever grateful for Mrs. Ward’s persistence and commitment to the success of her students and their lives after De La Salle. Along with Mrs. Ward, there were many others who are still here and who have left that have poured into me and been a second family. Mr. Fraizer, Mr. Shelton, Mr. Reis, Ms. Adams, and Mr. Z to name a few. Now I can say, with my mother and father sitting there proudly, that I am a product of my environment. I am not who I am despite of my background and life circumstances, but because of it. I will be the first person in my immediate family to receive a bachelor’s degree. I will be the first person in my entire family to pursue a Juris Doctorate degree and practice law. The potential was always there, but it took people to believe in me and invest in me for me to realize my full potential. Though I am unique, there are many other youth who have stories similar to mine. They are capable of achieving success but they may not have the preparation or opportunities to succeed. We need people like you to continue investing in places like De La Salle so that those youth who would normally slip through the cracks can have a chance to succeed. De La Salle is a magical place, where preparation meets opportunities, potential is realized, and dreams come true. It’s up to you to continue making this magic a reality. Thank you. DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 5 11/30/15 12:39 PM WHY DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC? •●Steve Morgan (De La Salle North Catholic High School parent): As our five children have all attended De La Salle North Catholic High School we have experienced the intentional caring and Presence of the living God in staff, including administrators and teachers. Passionate about subjects they teach, the instructors have shown an above and beyond effort and commitment to challenge our children to reach beyond themselves looking to serve those less fortunate in the immediate and global communities. •●Leigh Norris (Alumnae): De La Salle gave me the opportunity to work along side people who not only have jobs, but successful careers. At age 14 these interactions let me know what could be and even now those interactions still give me the motivation to never settle for less than what I am capable of. •●Pam Wood (School Counselor): Until a person feels like they belong, they cannot start to imagine what their future story can be. The community at De La Salle North Catholic is a place where kids can start their journey by finding a place where they belong. DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 6 11/30/15 12:39 PM “Your faith should be a shining light for those whom you teach.”* DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 7 11/30/15 12:39 PM WHY DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC? •●Janelle Parrish (Alumnae): De La Salle North Catholic is the place that I truly learned that the world is bigger than me and my problems. It taught me to be truly compassionate and to stand up for what I believe and it made me a women for others. •●Kyle Ritter (Math Teacher): The students at De La Salle North Catholic are different than what it was like when I was a high school student. It is fun that they relate to me as a person, not just as a teacher. •●Sarah Maher (Director of Lasallian Youth Ministry): De La Salle North Catholic students always amaze me how they are not afraid to use their faith to address hard social justice questions. •●Aiyana Ashley (Director of Corporate Work Study Program): Everyone here has a singularity of purpose- my colleagues are all here because they want students to succeed. Everyone here has a shared desire, regardless of department: to enable kids to have life changing experiences. •●Leslie Porter (Registrar & parent of an ‘05 alum): This is a place where I see miracles, great and small, occur daily. DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 8 11/30/15 12:39 PM “Show much kindness and love for the young people you teach.”* DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 9 11/30/15 12:39 PM THE UNIQUE PROFILE OF DE LA SALLE NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL A LASALLIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL- in the 330 year-old tradition of Lasallian schools, our mission is to provide a faith-based, quality education, to our students and their families regardless of their ability to pay for it. Over 500 Lasallian schools throughout the world educate more than 1,000,000 students. CRISTO REY NETWORK SCHOOL- we were the first to replicate this unique education & corporate work-study program and are now one of 30 in urban America. De La Salle students work hard at school and their job to help provide themselves an incredible opportunity to change their destiny. DEDICATED TO THE FAMILIES OF NORTH AND NORTHEAST PORTLAND- although it seems counter intuitive, but if a family’s income is too high, they cannot send their student to our school. We are dedicated to provide this opportunity just to the families who most need this educational option. OUR STUDENTS ARE WORKING TO EARN THEIR EDUCATION- this school is not for all students. They have to want to be here and to put in the hard work, both in the classroom as well as in the workplace. We hold the bar high and expect these young people to strive to learn and to achieve their goals. DELASALLE ANNUAL REPORT 2015.indd 10 11/30/15 12:39 PM THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS De La Salle North Catholic continues to provide our unique educational opportunity for the families of the inner-city of Portland because of the following generous supporters. Thank you for your kindness.
