If you are one of the 2.5 million visitors who crossed the bridge to Hilton Head Island
for a vacation this year, chances are you have entertained the idea of living here. Whether
you’re a first-time visitor or an annual guest, maybe you are wondering what it would be like
to plant your feet more firmly in the sand. If you already own a piece of paradise, read on and
count your blessings.
Life in the Lowcountry centers on three important values: nature, convenience and
community. Often billed as the nation’s first environmentally sensitive, “eco-planned” resort,
in spite of its steady growth, Hilton Head remains a haven for nature lovers. Waving palms,
magnificent moss-draped oaks and manicured golf courses decorate our world, with no
glaring lights, gaudy billboards or tacky carnival rides to compete with starry skies and
moonlit beaches.
A multitude of convenient amenities contribute to the serenity. In addition to a 13-mile
oceanfront playground and eight beach parks, the island boasts more than 100 miles of
multi-use trails and 12 parks for picnics, sports, community events and more, not to mention
golf, tennis, boating, fishing, swimming and other watersports.
New and re-development projects currently underway include the Shelter Cove Towne
Centre and adjacent five-acre park, Coligny area updates, a new rowing and sailing center
and continued additions and improvements to roads, signage, leisure pathways and parks.
The weather here is subtropical and temperate, yet Hilton Head Island experiences all
four seasons. Fall brings crisp air, oyster roasts and outdoor festivals. Spring paints the town
with bursts of color on a canvas of lush green grass and fresh foliage, inviting us out to play.
No snow shovel required for winter, but a sweater comes in handy for chilly days on the golf
course. Hot summer days are freshened by gentle sea breezes and ocean waves lapping at
our toes. Sounds good so far, right?
The truth is, not everyone who lives on Hilton Head Island is on a perpetual vacation. Many
people are working, building businesses, volunteering, raising families, and/or traveling—all the
more reason to appreciate the conveniences. Wherever you choose to live, on the island or in
Bluffton, rare is the occasion when you will drive more than 15-20 minutes to get where you’re
going: restaurants, schools, shopping centers, churches, grocery stores, hair salons, banks,
medical facilities and more are all within a stone’s throw. Two airports service the area: Hilton
Head Airport, located on the island and the Savannah/Hilton Head International airport—about a
45-mile drive from the island.
While like a small town in many ways, Hilton Head Island offers an unusual number of
cultural opportunities for a community its size: a performing arts center, art galleries, choral
society, symphony orchestra, and events such as the Hilton Head Wine Festival (the largest
outdoor tented tasting on the East Coast), the Hilton Head Motoring Festival and Concours d’
Elegance, the Heritage of Golf Classic PGA Tour event, and many community festivals and familyoriented affairs. Educational opportunities include public and private schools for children as well
as the University of South Carolina-Beaufort’s Hilton Head campus, Technical College of the
Lowcountry and Osher Lifelong Learning.
But perhaps what sets the community apart most is the friendly and fascinating people
who choose to live here. Most everybody is from someplace else, making for a diverse mix of
