If this product changes ownership, be sure to provide these instructions to the new owner. • Intended use: This product is designed for use at home or in an office setting. Use in production areas voids the warranty. Improper use voids the warranty. • The air humidifier is designed for indoor use, not for use outdoors. The room where the product is used should have an area of at least 40 m³ (1,400 cu ft). Smaller rooms are not suitable for this product. • This product must be placed on a level surface. Do not install in areas where warmth is generated, e.g. near heaters, in large, sunny window fronts, or under air conditioning units. • We recommend using a protective mat or similar floor covering when placing this product on sensitive flooring (e.g. parquet) in order to avoid damage caused by scratches or water. • Only use the power cable provided with the unit. Only connect the unit to 230 V/50 Hz. • Inspect the power cable for damage. Danger of electric shock! Never use a damaged power cable and always make sure to replace it with an original power cable. • Lay the power cable on the floor so that it does not create an obstacle that someone might trip over. • This product is designed for use with the Lechuza AirClean granulate supplied. Only these special granulate may be used as this is the only way to guarantee that the product functions properly. • Only fill the unit with fresh tap water. • Make sure the unit is connected to the main power supply when filling it with water. Only then will the filling height be confirmed with a visual and acoustic signal. • Avoid overfilling with water! Water may leak from the bottom of the planter if the unit is overfilled and the ventilator is set too high. • If the unit is accidentally knocked over, first disconnect the plug from the power outlet. Before returning the unit to service, make sure the electrical parts have not come into contact with moisture. • The safety features of the unit must not be altered in any way. A contact-free safety switch is integrated between the electrical box and the plant liner. It detects whenever the plant liner is removed from the unit. The water pump and ventilator are switched off. 2 3 Safety instructions AirClean components and scope of delivery • The AirClean system unit may only be opened, repaired or modified by professional 1 Planter service personnel. • Always unplug the unit before setting the plant liner back into the planter. • Persons (including children) who, whether due to their personal abilities or due to a lack of knowledge, are unable to safely use this product should only do so under trained supervision. 2 Plant liner with recessed carrying handles 3 Water tank with attached system unit. The system unit forms a single component consisting of an intermediate floor panel with seals, the electrical box with the AirClean operating unit, the ventilator, the sensor rods and the water pump. • Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the unit. 4 Lechuza AirClean granulate • The unit must be unplugged before performing any maintenance or service work. 5 Power cable (for connecting to the main power supply) • Children should never have access to packaging materials such as plastic bags. • The unit must be shut down if damages become visible or the electronics on the unit malfunction. 5 4 5 Operating principle There are two circulation systems: 1. Water circulation system: Water is poured from above onto Lechuza AirClean granulate, flows through the granulate and collects in the water tank below. Using a pump, the water is transported upwards at regular intervals via a hose into the Lechuza AirClean granulate to moisten them. 2. Air circulation system: The integrated ventilator within the planter takes in air through the perforation on the outside of the planter and circulates it through the Lechuza AirClean granulate. The air escapes on the surface of the Lechuza AirClean granulate. The air takes in moisture from the granulate as it flows through the unit and releases it back into the room (cool evaporation). Fine dust particles, etc. are captured within the granulate. Please note: The circulation systems only function when the AirClean system is connected to the main power supply. 6 7 Assembly and startup Remove the material used for secure transportation Plant the liner Unpack the air humidifier and prepare it for use. Lift out the plant liner using the carrying handles. Tip: It is most practical to fill the liner with Lechuza AirClean granulate and plant the liner in an area where water can drain after rinsing the granulate, i.e. outdoors (for example on the lawn) or in a sanitary room (for example in a bathtub). Remove the cardboard from the water tank (used for secure transportation). Check to make sure that the coarse mesh of the plant liner is inserted properly in both corners. The mesh allows air to pass through while at the same time holding the granulate. The factory installed transparent irrigation hose (a) must be inserted starting from the bottom of the plant liner leading directly to the inside fixing point (b) and then temporarily outwards. Fill the plant liner with Lechuza AirClean granulate, leaving enough room for the root balls. b a 8 9 Assembly and operation Planting We recommend only planting hydroponic plants in the AirClean system or, alternatively, ground plants from which the organic soil has been completely washed away. For information on recommended plants see page 26 of these instructions. Continue to fill with Lechuza AirClean granulate until they are 5 cm (2 in) below the rim of the plant liner. Remove the desired plant from the culture pot and shake off any loose expanded clay. Hold the rootstock into the plant liner at the desired height. 10 11 Assembly and operation Insert the irrigation hose Now insert the transparent hose as follows: Ensure that the Lechuza AirClean granulate are level and lay the hose on top, avoiding any kinks as illustrated. The hose should be placed close to the corners of the plant liner; if possible, either horizontally or at a slight decline from the fixing point. Run the end of the hose towards the middle, straight down to the rootstock. Tip: Lechuza AirClean granulate are composed of a variety of elements which are naturally prone to settling during manufacturing and transport. We therefore recommend rinsing the planted liner (with the Lechuza AirClean granulate and plant) with water prior to use. This can be done in a bathtub, over a drain on the floor or with a hose/watering can outdoors. Then let the plant liner stand to allow the excess water to drain. Finally, cover the irrigation hose with Lechuza AirClean granulate so that it is not visible. Please do not remove the cap at the end of the hose! 12 13 Assembly and operation Insert the plant liner Connect the unit to the main power supply Lift the plant liner using the carrying handles and place it into the planter. Push the carrying handles back down. Insert the power supply connector (a) into the corresponding plug socket at the base of the planter. Then connect the plug (b) into the power outlet. Check to make sure that the upper edge of the plant liner is flush with the planter. If not, inspect the upper and lower seals of the system unit for any debris. Caution, this will turn on the humidifier. See “Operation”. b a 14 15 Assembly and operation Fill the AirClean system with tap water When the AirClean system is connected to the main power supply and there is too little or no water in the water tank, the bottom red LED on the level indicator will begin to blink. Stop refilling when the last LED lights up green. This is indicated by five short acoustic signal tones (beep-beep-beep-beep-beep). Fill the water tank (approx. 28 liters [7 gal]) by pouring tap water onto Lechuza AirClean granulate from above. When overfilled, the upper LED will light up red (= caution overfilled!). Tip: Keep an eye on the level indicator LEDs while filling with water! There is a delay as water collects in the water tank and registers on the level indicator. Please pour the water slowly and evenly. The unit can also be operated when overfilled. A longer signal tone will be heard once. An integrated overflow mechanism allows excess water to drain from the bottom of the planter. Caution: Water may leak out! Therefore: Avoid overfilling! When overfilled, only use the humidifier at ventilator speed I. Watch for signs of leakage at the bottom of the planter! Caution overfilled! Stop filling! Too little or no water in the water tank 16 17 Operation The AirClean system is ready for operation when the plant liner, filled with Lechuza AirClean granulate, is placed in the planter. The AirClean system turns on immediately when connected to the main power supply. The “ventilator” LED lights up. Ventilator speed I is activated (= standard setting). Selecting ventilator speed The push button on the right is used to select ventilator speeds of I, II or III. We recommend ventilator speed I for everyday use. At speed III the humidifier works at full power. Please note: There may be a delay in ventilator activation if the system was filled with water, if the water circulation system was activated automatically or if the humidifier shifted position thereby triggering a change in the level indicator. Selecting standby mode The push button on the left is used to select the stand-by mode: The ventilator is then permanently deactivated to ensure the plant receives sufficient water. The water pump automatically switches on and off. Press the button on the left again to switch off the standby mode and return to the standard setting with the specified ventilator speed. 18 Switching off AirClean completely To completely switch off the humidifier, disconnect the plug from the power outlet. Warning! The plant will no longer be supplied with water! Refilling with water When the lower red LED on the level indicator blinks, the minimum level has been reached and the humidifier will switch off. The plant will no longer be supplied with water and may dry out. To refill, use a watering can to pour fresh tap water directly onto the granulate. While refilling with tap water, be sure to pay attention to the level indicator LEDs! Stop refilling when the last LED lights up green. This is indicated by five short acoustic signal tones (beep-beep-beep-beep-beep). Avoid overfilling! When overfilled, the upper LED will light up red and a longer signal tone will be heard. Please observe the instructions above! Tip: Pour the water slowly and evenly. There is a delay as water collects in the water reservoir and registers on the level indicator. 19 Maintenance and care Remove the plant liner with the Lechuza AirClean granulate (and plant) from the planter using the carrying handles and place it on a drain or similar area. Rinse the Lechuza AirClean granulate thoroughly, washing away any debris that has collected there. Maintenance intervals We recommend cleaning the water tank once a month. Tip: Perform maintenance work when the level indicator is at the minimum level; the water tank will be easier to remove. It is most practical to perform maintenance work in an area where water can drain later after rinsing the Lechuza AirClean granulate, i. e. outdoors (for example on the lawn) or in a sanitary room (for example in a bathtub). Maintenance First disconnect the plug from the power outlet (a). Then remove the power supply connector from the plug socket at the base of the planter (b). ! We recommend replacing the granulate completely every two years, cleaning the plant liner and then replanting the plant in new Lechuza AirClean granulate (see page 10 “Planting”). Tip: When removing the plant liner, the water tank should be almost empty so that it is light. Use a short piece of hose to allow the water to drain from the water tank. a b 20 21 Maintenance and care Remove the water tank and system unit completely from the planter using the carrying handles. The system unit can now be carefully lifted out of the planter and placed on the floor. Do not bend the long sensor rods that hang from the system unit! The electrical cable is located on the outside of the water tank. This cable must be disconnected by first loosening the plug socket (a) on the corner and then pulling out the connection from the fixing points (b). Clean the water tank. Remove any lime scale deposits using a household vinegar solution, then cleanse the container using a household disinfectant. Rinse thoroughly with water. Before replacing the unit, clean the sealing surfaces on the top and bottom of the unit (a). Make sure there is absolutely no debris on the sealing surfaces! a b a 22 23 Maintenance and care Place the system unit back into the water tank (a). Caution, do not bend the sensor rods! The water pump must be placed in the intended fixing points, located on the base of the water tank (b). Press the electrical cable and connector into the fixing points located on the outside of the water tank (c). The angled corners of the plug socket must point downwards; only then has the socket been properly inserted (d)! With both hands pointing outwards, hold the water tank with the system unit using the carrying handles and place it into the planter. Caution, danger of pinching! Insert the power supply connector into the corresponding plug socket at the base of the planter. Do not connect to the power supply at this point! Set the plant liner back into the planter. The upper edge of the plant liner must be flush with the planter. If not, inspect the upper and lower seals of the system unit for any debris. Once the unit is connected to the main power supply, the maintenance activities are complete and the humidifier is ready for operation once again. a d c b 24 25 Tips Planting Hydroponic plants are ideal for planting. It is very important that the hydroponic pot and the expanded clay on the root system (as far as possible) are removed before planting the plant in the AirClean system. Use plants with a hydroponic pot size ranging from 15–20 cm (6–8 in) in the AirClean system. Cut the root ends as usual. The plant will then begin to grow fresh roots again in its new environment. When choosing a plant, please note that the plant should not be taller than the air humidifier itself. Here is a small selection of hydroponic plants: – Spathiphyllum Sensation – Sansevieria – Raphis Excelsa – Aglaonema – Yucca Elephantipes – Zamioculcas – Dracaena fragrans and many other similar plants. Longer periods of absence / Vacation If the humidifier is left unattended for several weeks, stand-by mode is activated: The ventilator remains deactivated to ensure the plant receives sufficient water. The water reservoir should be filled up to the last green LED. In addition, we also recommend storing the unit in a shady area. The AirClean system must remain connected to the main power supply. Stand-by mode in the summer If the air cleaning function is not used for long periods (e.g. during the summer), only fill the water tank with 10–14 liters (2.6–3.6 gal) of water (until the second green LED lights up) and switch the unit to stand-by mode. The ventilator remains deactivated to ensure the plant receives sufficient water. Removing the AirClean system from service entirely If you are no longer planning to use the humidifier, please clean the unit according to the instructions outlined under “Maintenance” and do not refill it. Rinse the Lechuza AirClean granulate thoroughly and store in the plant liner (without the plant) for later use. In general, plants in organic soil are also suitable for Lechuza AirClean granulate. For these types of plants it is important that the root balls are cleaned completely free of dirt. Cut the root ends. Fertilizer Fertilizer is not recommended. 26 27 Troubleshooting Ventilator speed II and III have been set but you still cannot hear the ventilator immediately? For technical reasons, a delay was built in to ensure that the water can drain off before the ventilator begins operating whenever water is added, when the pump is operating or when there is a change in the level indicator. The LEDs no longer illuminate? Please check whether the power supply connector is correctly inserted in the plug socket at the base of the planter. The upper and lower red LEDs on the level indicator are both illuminated? This is an error message. The sensor rods require cleaning. There is leakage at the bottom of the planter? 1) The AirClean water tank is overfilled. It is important to stop filling when you hear the five short signal tones. The last green LED will light up. If you continue to fill the unit, a longer signal tone will be heard and the upper red LED on the level indicator will light up. 2) There is debris on the seals of the system unit. When fitting the system unit be sure that the sealing surfaces on the top and bottom of the system unit are clean. If a pellet becomes lodged in the system, the seals will no longer work properly. Water leaks during pump operation. A large amount of water needs to be filled before the third and fourth LEDs register? The distribution of the individual level indicators is not arranged in a linear fashion. At the minimum and maximum filling levels the AirClean system responds quickly to changes in the water level. For users the advantage here is that the entire volume can be used as a reservoir. You occasionally hear dripping coming from inside the unit? Depending on whether ventilator speed I, II or III is selected, the water pump is turned on for 2 minutes after 2, 4 or 6 hours, respectively. This is necessary in order to moisten the Lechuza AirClean granulate and to provide the plant with water. The humidifier is loud when ventilator speed I is selected? Please check whether only Lechuza AirClean granulate were used. This is especially important whenever the granulate have been replaced. The plant liner is not flush with the planter after insertion? There are impurities (e.g. pellets) on the sealing surfaces of the system unit. Please remove. 28 29 Technical data Appendix Type LLB 40 Airflow rate Level I approx. 30 m (1,060 cu ft) Level II approx. 40 m3 (1,413 cu ft) Level II approx. 80 m3 (2,825 cu ft) Humidification Level I approx. 3 l (0.8 gal) / day (at 77 °F, 30 % relative humidity) Level II approx. 4 l (1 gal) / day (at 77 °F, 30 % relative humidity) Level III approx. 7 l (2 gal) / day (at 77 °F, 30 % relative humidity) Sound emission Level l approx. 33 db Level Il approx. 40 db Level IlI approx. 49 db Water reservoir approx. 28 liters (7 gallons) Capacity approx. 26 liters (6.8 gallons) – Lechuza AirClean granulate Electrical connections 230 V AC/50 Hz Power consumption Level l 25 W Level Il 30 W Level IlI 40 W Standby approx. 3.5 W Dimensions 400 x 400 x 770 mm (15.75 x 15.75 x 30.32 in) Weight approx. 11 kg (24 lbs) (without water and granulate) 30 3 Warranty The legal warranty provided by the manufacturer applies.
