Warrior - AMVETS Department of Maine
National Commander’s Project: 2014 National Commander Larry Via WarrioR Transition Workshops I believe it is our mission to assist our returning veterans without applying the burden of the stigma that often comes with seeking mental health. Our soldiers are experiencing a very natural outcome of their service in protecting our freedoms and it is our duty to provide the leadership and appropriate tools to transition home. I am counting on you to help! In a recent twelve month period our Posts and Departments donated over $965,000 for various community programs, and in excess of $365,000 was for non-veteran causes. Our veterans should come first! Participant Comments: Help our Nation’s War Fighters come “all the way home,” by learning how to deal with the silent injury of the War on Terror: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “Reach out to all veterans and active duty; they will gain hope, peace, inspiration and get closure on civilian and combat related situations.” (Marine) “Very effective, thought provoking process of health and empowerment.” (Navy) “All the exercises were well planned and made such a great impact.” (Air Force) AMVETS Warrior Transition Workshop 4647 Forbes Boulevard Lanham, MD 20706 (301) 683-4005 Attn: Mike Fisher MFisher@amvets.org Mission: To assist in the successful healthy reintegration of Veterans Goal: Through expert evaluation, AMVETS is committed to demonstrating that this model of the Freedom and Honor warrior transition trainings is an effective and efficient reintegration model. And should be integrated into the DOD and VA post deployment programs to expand existing services and provide alternative routes for Veterans, Active Duty, Guard and Reserve to address Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and reintegration challenges. A preliminary sci entific evaluation conducted by Freedom and Honor under the direc tion of the Amer ican Institutes for Research® (AIR) show statisti cally significant results of AMVETS Warrior Transition Workshops (WTW) in addressing Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and reintegrationrelated challenges. The positive results of this evaluation speak to the need for a larger study. Full report may be viewed at: www.amvets.org/ pdfs/programs/WTW-Evaluation.pdf AMVETS Warrior Transition Workshops are post-deployment training programs for personnel of the U.S. military (veterans, active duty, Reserve and Guard), with a focus on those struggling with combat stress (PTS) and readjustment issues resulting from one or more deployments to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation New Dawn (OND) and other foreign military operations. The flagship program is a 3-day hands-on reintegration training program. The program uses paradigm shift methodologies, bioenergetics along with a well-crafted blend of history, legend, ritual and archetype proven effective in dealing with transition and the emotional and physical impacts of trauma. Programs are provided at no cost to the Veteran. Overall Issues the Trainings Are Designed to Address: 1. Combat Stress (Post Traumatic Stress) is a natural outcome of having served in combat. 2. Veterans do not want to be “labeled” as mentally unwell and do not readily seek mental health support; it negatively impacts their life and career. 3. Readjustment concerns and combat stress, when left unattended, often leads to permanent issues and long-term costs to society. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) 4. The current system operated by the DOD and VA is overburdened. AMVETS Warrior Transition Workshops integrate a peer-to-peer approach to help the veteran learn how to re-establish connections with their friends, families, occupations, and society as well as to reduce the impact of combat trauma. The Freedom and Honor programs were designed by training experts, combat veterans and mental health professionals. For more information go to www. AMVETS.org and click on programs.
