Football: Foster and Anderson
named finalists for national awards
Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster has been named one of
six finalists for the Broyles Award, the annual award for the nation’s
top assistant coach. Other nominees include Oregon offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis,
Alabama defensive coordinator Joe Kines, Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker and UCLA quarterbacks coach Jim Svoboda.
The winner will be announced Jan. 17 in Little Rock, Ark.
This is the third time Bud Foster has been named a finalist for
the award. In 1999, he lost to current Maryland head coach — then
Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen. In 2001, he lost
to Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon.
Bud Foster’s defense is currently ranked No. 1 in the country in
scoring and total defense. Last season, the Hokies finished in the top
five of both categories as well.
Also recognized is Tech senior linebacker James Anderson who
has been named one of ten finalists for the Awards and Recognition
Association’s Sportsmanship Award.
The new award honors good sportsmanship, character and role
models. Other finalists include University of Southern California
quarterback Matt Leinart, Auburn wide receiver Ben Obomanu
and running back DeAngelo Williams from the University of Memphis.
Anderson is the only player in Virginia Tech history to earn the
Excalibur Award for top honor in strength and conditioning four
times. In addition, he has recorded 75 tackles and three sacks on
the season. The winner will be announced in mid-December.
Cheerleading: Felder in final round
of online spirit contest

one of seven finalists in the Athlon Sports Sideline Spirit Contest. Final round voting started Monday, with a photo shoot in Athlon Sports
2006 College Football Preseason Annual going to the winner. Votes

Here’s a piece of advice: Go to
Jacksonville this weekend.
Trust me. I went for the first time
in the last week of October for the
Florida-Georgia game and had a
blast. Four friends and I piled into
a Honda and made the trek to a
place where we knew nobody and
the result was one of the most fun
weekends I’ve had in a long time.
Like I said, that was with us
knowing nobody. When the town
is swarming with Virginia Tech
fans, the place is going to be insane.
If you are going and have never
been, thank me now because I am
going to show you the ropes so
when you arrive to the Sunshine
State, you’ll be ready to rock and
roll like you own the town.
First, getting down there is easy.
Just drive south for a long time
until the air is much warmer than
Blacksburg’s. All kidding aside, get
on the Internet and get directions
to your hotel, but the trip should
take around nine hours, so plan
accordingly. I will tell you that you
should grab some good BBQ at
some point in your drive. I prefer
Ray’s Rib King in Yemassee, S.C.
(best sweet potato pie ever) but
I’m sure it’s all good — just try to
avoid places that look like they are
a part of a major chain ’cause you
can get that anywhere.
All right, now on to the important stuff so you don’t get to Jacksonville and stand around like a
deer in headlights for two hours
trying to figure out a game plan.
Your objective should be to get
to The Jacksonville Landing, which
is right on the St. Johns River. Look
for the big bridge that will be lit up
at night (likely blue) and The Landing is right at the bank of that part

of the river. There will be an enormous lit up white sign that says
“The Jacksonville Landing” — you
can’t miss it.
The Landing is what I like to
call a mini Bourbon Street. Basically, it’s a ton of restaurants and
bars that stay open until around 2
a.m. where everyone congregates
to partake in social activity (take
that for what it’s worth). There will
be live music, plenty of banter between Seminoles and Hokies — remember, Hokies Respect — and
delicious food.
It will probably cost $5 to get into
The Landing, but it is worth every
penny. Also, you do not have to be
21 to get in, which is great for all
the small fries seeking a good time
in Jacksonville as well.

on the location of your hotel, taxis
run anywhere from $6-$10, per
person (that’s not roundtrip).
There is also a few other ways to
get around town. If you’re staying
downtown on the other side of the
St. Johns, then you can take the
water taxi, which has several stops
and costs $3 (to Alltel is $4). If your
hotel on is on the south side, there
are other ways to get around, check
your hotel’s front desk for that information.
Don’t worry if you’re not staying
in downtown Jacksonville, most
aren’t. The last time I was there,
we stayed in some beat-up hotel
called The Scottish Inns on Phillips Highway, about four miles
from downtown and it worked out

month ago, it was for The World’s
Largest Outdoor Cocktail party,
and that’s exactly what it was and
what it will be this weekend. There
is going to be thousands of people
at The Landing ready to have a
good time — it is the place to be
when you get there.
One huge difference between
Jacksonville and Blacksburg that
will create problems is the size
of the city. Unless you’re staying
downtown, you can’t walk to The
Landing like you would from The
Village at Blacksburg to Collegiate
Suites.
However, have no fear, there are
going to be taxis galore — they
know you’re coming. They can be
a little pricey, but if you decide to
drink down there, it’s pretty much
your only alternative. Depending
