The HiFlyer gondola
The HiFlyer balloon
Balloons have a very special place in the
history of aviation. With HiFlyer you can
become part of this, and experience the
thrill and romance of ballooning.
For thousands of years,
through myths like
Icarus to the plans of great
thinkers like Leonardo da
Vinci, people have dreamed
of flight. On November
21st 1783, these dreams
became reality when a hot
air balloon carried two
men high into the skies
over France.
Per Lindstrand
In 1987, the Swedish-born pilot and
aeronautical designer and manufacturer
of the HiFlyer, Per Lindstrand, broke a
record with British entrepreneur, Sir
Richard Branson, when they successfully
crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a Lindstrand
balloon. This was not only the first hot air
balloon to cross the Atlantic, but was the
largest ever flown at 2.3 million cubic feet
(65,000m3) capacity, reaching speeds in
excess of 130 miles per hour (209km/h).
Their passion for ballooning led them into
a race to be the first to circumnavigate
the world non-stop.
The history and spirit
of ballooning
Today, personal milestones continue
to be reached, as children and adults
throughout the world enjoy the thrill of
a balloon flight for the first time, riding
in one of our tethered, helium-filled,
HiFlyer balloons.
Lindstrand AeroPlatforms
The pioneering trip took place in a balloon
designed and created by, Joseph Michel and
Jacques Etienne Montgolfier. The brothers’
invention caught the imagination of the
world and sparked an infatuation for balloon
flight that has never since been extinguished.

Orlando, USA
The HiFlyer offers a unique passenger
experience, adding an additional
dimension and unique vista to many
existing tourist destinations.
Passenger experience
In today’s age of raucous jets, there
is something magical about gently
ascending high in the sky in a peaceful
silence. Riding in the HiFlyer gondola
provides visitors with a unique experience
that is, curiously, both soothing and thrilling.
Working with you
In normal conditions, the balloon can
provide romance and excitement,
adventure and unforgettable views
up to four times an hour. In addition,
visitors can purchase wonderful personal
souvenirs including in-flight photographs,
flight certificates, HiFlyer postcards and
HiFlyer branded clothing.
•compliance with all planning and
regulatory requirements,
•installation of balloon and winch systems,
•employees and training for operating
the system (see page 13),
• insurance cover and maintenance.
The HiFlyer balloon is nonpolluting, environmentally
friendly, quiet and safe

HiFlyer balloon flight is suitable for
everyone, child and adult alike. The
gondola can comfortably accommodate
30 passengers and is designed to prevent
people bunching up. It allows every
passenger an unhindered view. It is highly
accessible and allows for a standard
(lightweight) wheelchair. Open weave
viewing ports ensure that the view for
wheelchair users and small children is
not obstructed.
The iconic balloon provides
considerable potential
to increase footfall at
existing sites

The winch system is installed either adjacent to the
ticketing room, or inside the outer mooring points.
The winch system is installed below the
landing platform.
Advertising

Artworked directly onto the balloon envelope, this gives
the most complete visual coverage, encircling the entire
70m circumference.
Attached underneath the netting envelope banners come
in various sizes up to 70m by 10m (230ft x 32ft).
Lindstrand AeroPlatforms
•Advertising graphics and sponsorship can be artworked
directly onto the balloon, which measures 22m (72ft) in
diameter. Alternatively a banner 10m x 70m (32ft x 230ft)
may be attached to the balloon, enabling graphics to be
changed as required.
•Up to eight advertising banners may be fitted to the
sides of the gondola, with a further opportunity to place
sponsorship or a message on the underside of the gondola.
•The balloon can be used as a backdrop for video projection
and laser advertising when low mooring or flying.
•The gondola can be fitted with a camera system for
TV channels to report on weather and news as well as
radio broadcasting.
• The HiFlyer is an excellent sponsorship and corporate events opportunity.
•An internal illumination system can light up the balloon
like a giant lantern in the night sky.
•Representing a high visibility advertising location, the HiFlyer
can ascend to a maximum height of 160m (530ft), up to
four times an hour (subject to weather conditions), both
day and night.
•When at ground level, the balloon is still imposing,
measuring a height of 36m (120ft).

Expertise
Lindstrand AeroPlatforms
Per Lindstrand and his team
have specialised in aeronauticalfabric engineering for almost
three decades.

Backed by experts and
fronted by enthusiasts
Per Lindstrand, the founder of Lindstrand
Technologies, is a director of LAP and
its parent company Aeroplatforms plc.
His team of highly qualified specialists
have designed and built hot air balloons
to fly the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, in
addition to Roziere balloons (which use a
combination of helium and hot air) to fly
the jet stream on the ICO/Virgin Global
Challenger with Sir Richard Branson.
Leading-edge design
World-class manufacture
Lindstrand has been a leader in the field
of hot air balloon design for more than 30
years. Technical know-how and innovation
in the manufacture of traditional hot
air balloons has progressed to include
gas airships, aerostats and the HiFlyer,
our passenger-carrying tethered balloon
which operates in several countries
throughout the world.
The Lindstrand manufacturing process
and quality control is second to none.
The HiFlyer system is constructed in
the purpose-built Oswestry factory by
a team of highly-specialised experts.
Lindstrand design welding techniques
give joints added strength over normal
gluing methods, providing unprecedented
quality assurance, unmatched in balloon
manufacturing anywhere in the world. All
work is checked, inspected and approved
by aviation authorities under the strict
guidance of European Aviation Safety
Agency to ensure the highest standards.

true creativity are the result of
commitment and persistence.”

Safety
Strength
Comfort
Safety is our priority at all times. The
gondola’s non-slip floorboards are made
from marine plywood. A safety barrier
extends around the upper section to
prevent falls and the loss of objects such
as cameras over the side. An emergency
stop means the balloon can be halted at
any point in the operating cycle. The main
motor has a spring-operated fail-safe
brake which is backed up by a fail-safe
calliper brake which acts directly on the
winch drum flange. Either brake is capable
of stopping the balloon independently.
A Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA)
ensures that all possible modes of failure
can occur without risk to passengers.
Mechanical limit switches back up all
functions and three levels of protection
cover excess speed and excess travel.
The net that covers the balloon carries
the entire structural load from the
envelope to the winch cable. It is
manufactured from high tenacity
polyester yarn and each element can
carry a load of more than one tonne.
At least 192 elements share the load in
the net. The balloon is designed to stay
inflated at all times. The 40 anchor points
which moor the balloon to the ground allow
the HiFlyer to ride out winds gusting in
excess of 60 knots (69mph). The octagonal
shaped gondola is manufactured from
aircraft quality stainless steel box sections
for added strength.
Under 3m the balloon moves upwards at
a slow speed. At 3m it accelerates gently
to a full speed of no more than 35m per
minute, automatically stopping at the
pre-programmed ride height. Descent is
a reversal of the ascent, where the balloon
lowers to a height of 3m where it stops
and then continues its descent to land at
the slower speed.
Longevity
All components of the balloon are
manufactured to the highest levels of
quality and life. The net is UV treated
and is designed for a 5-7 year service
depending on UV intensity, humidity
and pollution levels.
