Echuca Moama’s
HISTORY AND CULTURE
Echuca and Moama were founded
by ex-convicts. Cattle dealer James
Maiden came to Moama nearly 10
years before Henry Hopwood’s arrival
in Echuca. He had been sentenced to
death for the burglary of silverware
and candles before the sentence
was commuted to seven years’
transportation.
n 18 , aiden established a punt and
an inn on the northern side of the urray,
in an area soon nown as aiden s unt.
he area became nown as oama
meaning place of the dead in 18 1.
enry opwood had been convicted
for receiving stolen sil and sentenced
to 1 years transportation. fter two
stints as a policeman, he arrived on the
southern side of the river in 1850 and set
up a rival punt and pub in 18 . he site
became nown as chuca in 18 , a term
meaning meeting of the waters .
opwood was the more enterprising
of the former convicts. is suggestion
of a river port formed the basis of the
river trade which was paramount to
the economic development of the
nation, opening up inland ustralia
for settlement. chuca soon became
ustralia s largest inland port and was
even nominated as a possible national
capital in 18 1.
rom then on, chuca oama prospered.
arges and boats graced the river, plying
their trade.

chuca was the main ship building centre
for the river transport industry for many
years catering for a growing demand for
red gum for wharf piles, railway sleepers
and building materials.
he district supported a do en sawmills
in the 1870s, cutting more than 1000 logs
a wee .
he e pansion of the railways from
elbourne, improvement to roads and
fic le river conditions all combined to
lessen Echuca’s importance and by the
18 0s, the paddlesteamer eet was in
decline.
n economic depression and the collapse
of several ban s virtually ended chuca s
role as a ma or economic centre and the
population began to disperse.

By touring our region, you’ll come to understand
how people on the land care for it. From the
original custodians, the Aboriginal tribes, over
thousands of years, to the early pioneering
families.
The countryside is dotted with niche businesses

The Echuca Moama region is surrounded in
rich natural habitat from River Red Gum and
o forests to significant par s and wetlands
abundant with native birds, animals, plants and
trees. The region is home to some spectacular
waterways, including the Murray, Edward,
Campaspe and Goulburn Rivers, which provide
popular water sports, camping and fishing
locations.
The road network around the region ranges
from major highway arterials to gravel bush
tracks. Caravans are able to access most roads,
however, care should be taken when using river
tracks.

has free camping facilities,
hot showers and a caravan

in January each year.
Often referred to as the “Fauna Park
town”, Kyabram is well known for the
internationally acclaimed Kyabram Fauna

Fauna. The town’s history is captured in
a town mural off the main street, while
the central shopping precinct provides a

of the historic buildings are
nowadays home to cafes, gift
shops and stores selling vintage
wares. Nearby, Waranga Basin is
a haven for water sports, while
the now deserted township of
Whroo provides an insight into
what was once an extensive
mining operation. Don’t miss the
Rushworth Easter Festival and
Moora Working Draught Horse
Festival each Easter.
Stanhope boasts some
