ABOUT US: Why choose this
school over other schools?
Our Martial Arts and Physical Fitness Programs are
under the direction of experienced and dedicated
Black Belts. Our program places great emphasis
on the individual student. Each student is unique
and has different learning requirements and
abilities. We understand and utilize the principles
of observation to discover the special needs of each
student and listen carefully to them.
We have a traditional yet, innovative training
program flexible and challenging enough for their
needs, at the same time keeping within the protocol
of our Martial Arts system and our core Christian
values. Our curriculum is comprehensive and
physically demanding. It is designed for students to
gain strength, develop confidence, and grow at their
own pace at each level before advancing.
Our programs are taught in a progressive and logical
manner. Our students will learn practical and
realistic Self-Defense skills they can use to defend
themselves in a dangerous situation. We teach
our students to be proactive in crime prevention
and how to avoid the dangers of gang violence,
drugs, bullying and promiscuous sex. Our students
require no special skills and will learn Self-Defense
techniques from the age of 5 years old and up.
In 2001, The Ohana Self Defense Academy LLC was
voted “Dojo of the Year.” Our school is a Christian
based Ohana ‘’Family” oriented Martial Arts
school with a variety of social activities ranging
from our Monthly Birthday Parties, Year-End
Holiday Celebrations, FUMA Self-Defense Training
Seminars, Open Karate Tournaments, Kids Camps,
“Movie Nights,” Martial Artists Battle Against Cancer
Fundraisers, to our annual Ohana Summer Luau.
Our students train in a safe fun filled Christian
atmosphere where our Black Belt team assists
our students in developing skills for Academic
Excellence. We mentor, inspire, and encourage
Spiritual Growth; promote Family Nutritional
Education, Health & Wellness and provide
Martial Arts, Physical Fitness, and Personal Safety
Instruction. “Come and join our Ohana!”
May God Bless & Keep You Always!

“Our Focus, Our Fight!”
In 2004, The Ohana Self Defense Academy LLC
joined the New Jersey Chapter of the Leukemia
Lymphoma Society to assist in raising funds for
pharmacology research and innovative medical
technology to find out how these cancers attack,
and find future cures for patients with Leukemia,
Lymphoma, Myeloma and other blood cancers.
We’ve raised thousands of dollars by hosting
annual fundraising events such as: Self-Defense
Training Seminars, and Karate Tournaments to
help raise money for additional patient services
that include: financial assistance, transportation,
medication education and support groups for
patients and their families coping with blood

What is Bullying?
Bullying is the repeated, deliberate “thug-like” practice
of: Harassment, Intimidation, Mistreatment, Torment,
Oppression and other hurtful acts of Cruelty inflicted
upon another person or one group over another for
pleasure. There are different types of bullying: Cyber,
Verbal, Physical, Emotional, Extortion, Direct/Indirect,
Social, Relational, Sexual Assault and Rape.
The person who faces the aggressive acts of a Bully, is
known as the “TARGET” or victim.
The results of bullying can have long term effects. In
some cases, the impact of bullying has had deadly
implications to both the target and the bully.
Bullying acts usually take place in school hallways,
locker rooms, bathrooms, playgrounds, churches,
healthcare facilities, the workplace, and especially in
the home. Adopted, step and handicapped children are
common targets of abuse. Our goal is to be a proactive
resource and help the targets as well as the bullies.
FUMA
The Federation of United Martial Artists Crusade Against Crime®
FUMA: is a 501 (C) 3 charitable non-profit organization founded in
1981, specializing in providing proactive educational anti-crime
programs for communities across the United States. Our programs
are designed to meet the needs of citizens of all ages, shapes, and
sizes, making their community a safe place to live; especially those
citizens who have physical disabilities. As a last resort, we provide
a realistic and practical “hands on” Self-Defense program providing
citizens with the necessary skills to avoid and defend oneself in a
dangerous situation. We also provide Physical Fitness programs
for senior citizens assisting them in improving the 4 pillars of life:
Emotional, Physical, Spiritual, and Mental Health. Our fitness
programs are designed to improve circulation, concentration,
strength, and balance to decrease injuries due to falls. We also assist
in developing relaxation and breathing exercises to reduce stress.
Most of all, we assist them in maintaining their dignity, and to walk
with confidence.
FUMA conducts workshops for our young people in the
community about “peer pressure,” and the dangers of Gang
Violence, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and Teen Sex. We also
conduct workshops for children who are victims of “Bullying.”
We provide education, and training for parents and teachers
in the school system to maintain an atmosphere of intolerance
for this destructive behavior, and recognize the aggressors and
the warning signs of behavior changes in bullying victims.
We also provide support to the victims of Domestic and Child
Abuse, assisting them in restoring their dignity and self-respect.
FUMA provides Self-Protective and Anti-Crime seminars for the
following community organizations:
Police and Fire Safety Officials, Private and Corporate Security,
Boys & Girls Clubs, Church Organizations, Elementary through High
Schools, Colleges, Women’s Groups, Martial Arts Dojos and the
Military.
PERSONAL SAFETY
STREETWISE SAFETY
For Women and Children®
Today more than ever before, it is essential for women
and children to be aware and utilize basic Self-Protection
techniques. Our community based proactive Self-Defense &
Personal Safety program is designed to keep you and your
family safe. This effective safety program deals directly
with confrontation issues, communication and avoidance
techniques, and the utilization of defensive survival skills. Our
program is practical and reality based. The subject matter is
taught with a “hands on” approach and covers topics such as:
(1) learning about the psychology of fear and how to overcome
it; (2) developing skills to manage and escape from single and
multiple attackers; (3) learning personal and family safety tips;
(4) learning awareness skills such as visual, auditory, and body
language; (5) as a last resort, learn and apply practical
Self- Protection techniques you can use at home, on the
street, and the workplace.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
TAI CHI
A Chinese system of physical movements designed to use
energy in the body resulting in spiritual development. Tai
Chi exercise improves circulation; concentration; and special
breathing patterns; centering the body with meditation and
relaxation. Most often, the elderly practice these exercises to
regain strength and balance; greatly decreasing their chances
of injuries and falls.
The slow movements of Tai Chi make it easy for anyone to
practice and gain health benefits.
AMERICAN CHI-KUNG
The Art of Breathing
Focuses on becoming one with our bodies’ internal force
through the art of breathing. Western culture and medicine
practically ignores this natural vitality and energy. The art of
breathing can benefit the young and old by amplifying and
enhancing the bodies’ natural rhythms and cycles.
Chi-Kung can be applied to any martial arts system to
improve effectiveness. The development of this internal force
can bring devastating speed; power and extreme relaxation;
increased flexibility; agility; and endurance.

HAWAII KENPO KARATE
KAJUKENBO
Hawaii Kenpo Karate & Kajukenbo: are true realistic
Self-Defense systems developed by founders Sijo
Adriano Emperado and Professor Marino Tiwanik. To
effectively understand why these Hawaiian based
Self-Defense systems have a fierce reputation; one
must witness the techniques to understand the
beauty, power, and speed of Kenpo and Kajukenbo.
The Kenpo Karate/Kajukenbo practitioner devastates
an attacker relentlessly by striking with great force
and quickness; taking advantage of the attacker’s
body motion as the attacker reacts to the blows.
Although the practitioner has this demeanor and
ability, he or she, portrays a fun loving, humble,
God fearing family person, and a leader in their
community.
YOSHITSUNE/COMBAT
JUJITSU
The Yoshitsune JuJitsu system was founded by Junji
Saito, Sensei. Upon Saito Sensei’s passing in 1988, Dai
Shihan Michael DePasquale Sr. became “Soke” of the
Yoshitsune Jujitsu system until his passing in 2006. His
son, Ni Dai Shihan Michael DePasquale Jr. is now, the
“Soke” of the Yoshitsune and the Combat Jujitsu system.
The basic principle of Combat Jujitsu is to defeat the
enemy in any way possible. While evading the attacker,
the Combat Jujitsu practitioner uses the least amount
of force necessary. The Combat Jujitsu practitioner uses
leverage to take away the attacker’s balance and uses
the attacker’s force against him. Combat Jujitsu uses
quick and powerful hand and foot strikes, devastating
joint locks, and throwing techniques to control and
immobilize the attacker. Combat Jujitsu is ideal for close
“hand to hand” Self-Defense against grabs, punches,
and weapons attacks.
IAIDO/IAI-JITSU
Japanese Swordsmanship involves the drawing and the
returning of the sword to and from the scabbard, cutting
motions and defensive techniques. By continually refining
our motion and technique, we improve concentration,
physical skills and mental discipline. Our “Katas” are
pre-arranged series of motion designed to defend
against an attack. Each “Kata” teaches several principles
of Miyamoto Musashi Sensei’s “Samurai Warrior” fighting
strategy and the principles of correct sword maintenance
and handling.
ESCRIMA/ARNIS/KALI
Escrima (also known as Arnis and Kali) is a weapon based
martial art from the Philippine Islands. The main weapon
used is a 28 inch 71cm in length rattan stick called a “cane or
baton.” Both single and double baton techniques are used and
“empty hand” self-defense techniques against stick and bladed
instruments are also taught.
The Escrima/Arnis practitioner strikes the attacker’s hand
and/or arm, not the attacker’s weapon. This technique is
called “defanging the snake.” By striking the hand/and or
arm of the attacker, it forces the attacker to drop the weapon,
greatly reducing the threat. Escrima/Arnis is the national
sport of the Philippine Islands and has a long history of proven
combat effectiveness. Only recently has this art become more
conspicuous in many countries and enjoyed the popularity of
other traditional Asian martial arts.
The Escrima/Arnis student starts training with the weapons
from the beginning before empty hands self-defense training.
This type of training builds manual dexterity in the student
and develops faster conditioned responses to various attacks.
Although Escrima/Arnis is weapons based, it also includes:
kicking and striking, ground-fighting, as well as practical
defenses against most weapons. In the northern islands of the
Philippines, (Luzon) the weapons art is called “Arnis,” in the
central islands, (Visayas) it is called “Escrima,” and the southern
islands of (Mindanao), it is called “Kali.”
THE INSTRUCTORS
“A true leader has the confidence to stand
alone; The courage to make the tough
decisions and the compassion to listen to the
needs of others. True leaders are not those
who strive to be the first, but those who are
first to strive and give their all for the success
of the team. True leaders see the need to
have a clear vision and implement a plan of
action to empower the team for action. By
the strength of the leaders commitment,
the power of the team is unleashed. Some
say “I’ll try my best,” true leaders say “I’ll be
the best!”
One does not set out to be a leader, but
becomes one by the quality of his or her
actions, and the integrity of their intent. In
the end, leaders are much like eagles... They
don’t flock, you find them one at a time.”
