As most of you know we at American
Pest Management Inc. are continually
looking for ways to serve our clients

very excited to introduce Recruit HD bait
as the paradigm shift in bait technology.
Recruit HD will enhance your Sentricon
Termite Protection by leaps and bounds.
This new bait will be placed in every
Sentricon Station from day one and will
protect your home or property starting
with the first time the termites approach
your home. The bait is introduced into the
termite colony from the very first feeding
of the bait and the process of termite
colony elimination has started.
The new Recruit (HD) technology is
designed to enhance the Sentricon Termite
Colony Elimination System and has been
manufactured in a way to be effective in
the ground for several years without having to
be replaced. However, we do need to check
the condition and the palatability of the bait.
Our technicians have been expertly trained to
determine when the bait needs to be replaced.
The new bait has new protocols that build in

cost tags along with them. To incorporate this

APM Welcomes Purple Swirl To Manhattan
Purple Swirl Frozen Yogurt is a selfserve frozen yogurt shop in the
Westloop Shopping Center. We pride
ourselves in serving a healthy and
delicious frozen treat. Purple Swirl

This section of “The Buzz” is usually
dedicated to recognizing, our
technicians. However, in this edition we
will be switching it up to “Check the
Office Staff” where we will be
introducing a member of our office staff.
This segment is dedicated to Shawna
Weber.
Shawna has been with APM going on
four years now and has been helping
hold down the fort in the Manhattan
office. Shawna is originally from Home,
Kansas and came to Manhattan to
attend Manhattan Technical School
where she received a degree in Graphic
Design. On the days when she is not
busy at work she is out spending time
with her friends going to the lake,
camping, fishing and swimming. She
also enjoys sewing, fixing computers,
and photography. She is the
editor/creator of our quarterly
newsletter.
Here in the Manhattan office she is
known as our go to girl. There is nothing
she can’t fix.

Pew what’s that Smell?
One of my favorite cartoons when I was a
child was the Adventures of Pepe Le Pew.
For those of you who are not familiar with
this poor little French speaking striped
skunk, check him out on You tube. You will
definitely get a few laughs as he chases
love, but only is denied time and time
again because of his very poignant
cologne.
Recently I had the pleasure of coming face
to face with Monsieur Le Pew and first
handedly experienced why all of Pepe’s
targets ran for the hills. For those of you
at Community First Bank, Dillons, and
other fine establishments in town I am
sorry you had to endure my fine cologne.
But yes, your poor pest management
professional was sprayed by Monsieur Le
Pew as he was removing him from one of
our clients’ homes. Luckily I had just
attended a seminar in Kansas City, in
which an extension agent, Stephen
Vantassel, from the University of Nebraska
shared his University tested antidote for
Skunk Odor Removal. Surprisingly most of
these items can be found around the
house, the recipe is as follows:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
(fresh bottle)
¼ cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1-2 teaspoons liquid dish soap
Ingredients must be mixed in an open
container and used immediately. Never mix
the ingredients in advance because the
oxygen released from hydrogen peroxide
may cause a closed container to explode.
The solution can be used on people or pets;
avoid splashing product in the eyes or
mouth. Allow the solution to remain on hair
for five minutes before rinsing with water.
Repeat as needed. Do not use this solution
on clothing – It may discolor the fabric.

Ever wanted to know if that bat Myth is true?
I have a bat in my home! Should I be
worried? What now!?! Since March we
have had several phone calls in regards to
Little Brown Bats invading homes in our
area. There are several common myths in
regards to our little winged friends.
Myth 1: Bats are blind.
Fact: All bats can see and some have
quite good eyesight.
Myth 2: Bats get tangled up in people’s
hair.
Fact: Bats navigate and catch tiny insects
using echolocation. This system is
extremely refined and more sophisticated
than radar. Bats can detect single strands
of human hair and can easily avoid your
hair. This myth may have gotten started
by bats catching insects that were
attracted to humans. They were actually
helping us out!
Myth 3: Bats have super-natural
powers.
Fact: Bats actually have supersensory abilities. They can navigate
very well at night because of these
abilities. They are active at night
because that’s when insects are most
active.
Myth 4: Bats are flying mice.
Fact: Bats are not rodents; they are
the only mammal that can fly.
Myth 5: Bats have lots of litters
every year.
Fact: Most bat mothers produce only
one baby per year. They lavish them
with attention, making sure they have
lots to eat and that they learn how
to move around safely. Some bats
even carry their babies with them
when foraging at night. Because of
their slow reproductive rate, bat
populations are unable to recover quickly
from disturbances.
Myth 6: Most bats have rabies.
Fact: Like all mammals, bats can get
rabies. However, only ½ of 1% of bats
contract rabies. When they do, they are
very sick and usually die. If you see a bat
on the ground or during the daytime, it
might be sick. Don’t touch it and keep
children and pets away from the bat.
If you are seeing some odd looking
droppings on your porch, hearing noises
from your walls or attic, or have seen a
bat inside your home, a bat family could
have found a way into your home. If you
are concerned about bats in your home
call us for a bat inspection.
