International recognition as one of the few women players to challenge China’s badminton domination. A regular top-5 spot in the world rankings. Medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. Eleven titles, six Super Series and five Grand Prix gold in the badminton fortresses of the Far East as well as in Europe. Those are the tangibles. The intangibles are as significant. Nehwal is, arguably (with only boxers and wrestlers in competitive contention), India’s No.1 athlete across all sports. Saina’s game is built, not on neither ‘style’ or ‘finesse’ (much-patronised “Indian” sporting qualities) but a coldblooded commitment to athleticism and endurance. On this special day, IBL Express goes back into the past to highlight a few crucial moments of Saina’s career DoB: March 17, 1990 1st coach: Nani Prasad in Hyderabad in 1998 G International debut: At the age of 13 in India Satellite Tournament in 2003 G 1st Splash: World Junior Championship in 2008 G Olympics debut: First Indian women shuttler to reach the last-16 in 2008 G 1st major award: Honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2009 G 1st International glory: Philippines Open in 2009 G Big laurel: Awarded the Padmashree in 2010 G High Point: Received India’s highest sporting award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2010 G Striking gold: 2010 Commonwealth G Saina Nehwal has given Indian badminton its 21st century tipping point THE IBL EXPRESS G G Games singles title Historic landmark: 1st Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal in 2012 By Ayaz Memon Columnist and TV Commentator The Chinese coaches and players see in Saina a threat to their hegemony —Samikshan Dutta Saina Nehwal Youth icon par excellence Saina Nehwal—Upclose G World No.2 women singles player G Loves fashion ‘shoots’ G Likes playing ‘angry birds’ G Watches DDLJ re-runs G Believes in destiny G Trains seven hrs a day G Takes a break on Sunday IT’S an age when you think you can conquer it all. Saina Nehwal, 23, has already broken the taboo for Indian sportswomen – the Haryanvi lass in a Hyderabadi avatar is the most suc- THE TIMES THEY ARE a-CHANGIN’ cessful story of a Girl Uninterrupted in Indian sports. Saina has been in the limelight for years, reached a position that no Indian shuttler has done before, become the ad world’s new poster girl and a youth icon who will strive to be successful like never-before. Not surprisingly, girls from the remote corners of India to the uber ones in the cities want to emulate her today. Saina Nehwal is indeed an inspiration to millions of youth in India. –Isha Ravi THE HIGH point of the London Olympics for me was the performances of Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal. The bronze medals they won (in boxing and badminton respectively) not only swelled up India’s kitty of medals by 100 per cent from the Beijing Games but also provided a direction for Indian sport: ignore women and you cut down your medal prospects by at least half. In many ways – though only one medal was won – the performance of the shuttlers was the most impressive from the Indian contingent. In doubles, mixed doubles and obviously singles, the improved standard of Indian badminton was evident and a happy augury for the future. We’ve had some stellar players in the past – Prakash Padukone and Syed Modi in the 1980s and Pullela Gopichand in the 1990s who made a deep impact at the international level. What is heartening today is that women shuttlers too are notching up noteworthy achievements at this level, suggesting a revolution of sorts, with Saina Nehwal in the vanguard.
