J.P. Morgan célèbre ses trois ans de partenariat avec Paris Photo.
Following the success of Paris Photo
Los Angeles, we are happy to welcome
you to the Grand Palais to discover
the extraordinary proliferation
of contemporary and historic
photographic creation presented by
136 galleries and 28 editors, both
french and international.
Once again, a rich ensemble of
exhibitions completes this global
panorama. The “ Recent Acquisitions ”
exhibition presents the new
collections of three international
institutions: lnstituto Moreira
Salles of Rio de Janeiro, The Art
Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and
the Museum Folkwang of Essen.
The “ Private Collection ” exhibition
unveils a singular selection of
photographic artworks from the
collection of Harald Falckenberg /
Deichtorhallen Hamburg.
The Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation
2013 Photobook Awards continue
to broaden our appreciation of the
vitality of this specific medium.
It is accompanied by the “ Open Book ”
exhibition for which Martin Parr
presents an ensemble of exceptional
“ protest ” photobooks.
Paris Photo is also a moment
of exchange, open to reflection.
Artists, galleriests, collectors,
the curious and the passionate
reunite for the Platform, the
programming for which is organized
this year by Nicolas Bourriaud,
Director of the École nationale
supérieure des beaux-arts of Paris
and Chantal Pontbriand, Art Critic,
Curator and Founder of Pontbriand
W.O.R.K.S. [We _ Myself and others _
Research _ Knowledge _ Systems].
Paris Photo is also a photography
Agenda which permits you to follow on
line and all year round, the current
events of galleries and our partner
institutions across the world.
The programming is made possible
thanks to the support and
participation of our numerous
partners, to whom we express our
sincere thanks. Until you join us
again in Los Angeles in April,
welcome to the 17th edition of
Paris Photo at the Grand Palais.

RECENT
ACQUISITIONS
For the third year, Paris Photo has invited three international
institutions to present their recent photography acquisitions to
showcase the diversity of museum acquisition policies.
The Art Gallery of Ontario in Canada presents an exhibition
entitled, “ Propositions de Performances ” [Proposed Performances]
featuring a work by Arnaud Maggs and a selection of press prints.
With “ Looking at Cities ”, the Instituto Moreira Salles in Brazil
invites us to look through the eyes of photographers who have
witnessed the spectacular development of Brazilian cities.
With “ Témoins de leur temps ”, [Witnesses of Their Time], the
Museum Folkwang in Germany addresses the encounter between two
different cultures of photojournalism. The exhibition compares
the era of war reporting in the first half of the 20th century
with the way the Egyptian revolution has been represented.
The exhibition “ Recent Acquisitions ” is organised with the
support of Giorgio Armani, Official Partner of Paris Photo 2013.
On this occasion, “ ACQUA #4 ” presents a body of works on the theme
of water.

THE OPEN BOOK EXHIBITION
PROTEST
BOOK
BY MARTIN PARR
This exhibition examines the history of the protest photobook,
in particular the turbulent decade of the 1960ʹs and 1970ʹs,
when, before the days of the Internet, the book was the best
platform to show the protest movements.
From the private collection of the renowned bibliophile,
Martin Parr, the exhibition features books and pamphlets from
all five continents.

PLATFORM
The Paris Photo Platform this year is co-directed by Nicolas
Bourriaud, Director of the École nationale supérieure des
beaux-arts de Paris and Chantal Pontbriand, Curator and Art
critic, Founder of Pontbriand W.O.R.K.S. [We _ Myself and others _
Research _ Knowledge _ Systems].
The Platform is organized around three lines corresponding to
the state of thinking and practices that provoke debate in the
world of art and photography today:
—
Photography challenged by the world
How is photography changing at a time when the world seems to
be paradoxically both growing and shrinking? Has ethnographic
photography, based on the idea of the existence of people and
places that are “other”, taken with it the idea of documentary
photography? A collection of travel shots and exotic film stills,
protocols for relationships with residents, a mise-en-scène
offsetting what is local and what is global, an archeology of
images in various regions of the world, all this and more feed
into these questions.
—
Encyclopedic fantasy
Influential art historian Aby Warburg opened out the discipline
at the beginning of the last century to include a new concept
of working with images. Today, a number of contemporary
artists following this line of thought explore taxonomies and
iconologies. This “encyclopedic fantasy” is in line also with
the use that artists today make of archives. What is the meaning
of this focus on the past and on the historical weight of the
image?
—
Photography, painting, limits?
What lies beyond the incestuous ties between photography
since its invention and the tradition of painting? How do new
technical and sociological developments, and even developments
in artistic thought itself, push these ties and these limits
ever further? What about the image’s ability to overshadow
itself, a process found in a number of artists’ work, pushing
dematerialization to its limits to the point of even overturning it?

SFR PRESENTS
« LES GLORIEUX »
BY MARION GRONIER
THE SFR JEUNES TALENTS LAUREATES
PARIS PHOTO 2013
An exhibition by Marion Gronier presented and produced by BMW
Art & Culture.
BMW has partnered with the Musée Nicéphore Niépce in
Chalon-sur-Saône to support young photographers in their
artistic exploration and the production of their works under
the leadership of François Cheval, Curator of the Museum.
This year, Paris Photo will be hosting the photographs
of Marion Gronier, winner of the 2012 BMW Residency at the
Musée Nicéphore Niépce. Marion Gronier spent her three-month
residency at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce pursuing her work on
human figures and masks.
Once again, SFR is lending its support to photographic
creativity, and more particularly to emerging photographers,
in the 7th SFR Jeunes Talents competition at Paris Photo.
Five artists selected by a professional jury will have the
opportunity to display their work at the Paris Photo show,
giving them visibility and recognition among the general public
and professionals. The 2013 laureates who will be presented at
Paris Photo: Gabriela Kaszycka, Thibaut Derien, William Lakin,
Alex Cretey-Systermans and Julien Mauve.
A selection of photographs by Mazaccio and Drowilal, winners of
the 2013 residency, will also be shown in the BMW space.

The exhibition, Brassaï, pour lʼamour de Paris, tells the
exceptional story of one passion — a passion that for more than
50 years united Brassaï with intellectuals, artists, powerful
families, prostitutes and vagrants — all those that make Paris
legendary. Throughout his life, Paris remains at the heart of
his reflection, the common thread that binds his work.
