NMIA AIRPORT CHAPEL
is an interfaith facility, that is, the
facility will be made available for use
by airport users and stakeholders of
all faiths, for individual spiritual
needs, such as silent prayer, reading
and meditation. Corporate faith
based events will be permitted in the
chapel, based on the suitability of the
facility to host the event and its conformity to the regulations of the Airport Operator and Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority.
The facility will be operated in conformity to
provisions on religion in the Jamaican Constitution. “Every person shall have the right
to freedom of religion including the freedom
to change his religion and the right, either
alone or in community with others and both
in public and in private, to manifest and propagate his religion in worship, teaching, practice and observance. “
Opening hours: The chapel will be opened
to airport users and stakeholders 16 hours
per day for silent prayer, reading and meditation. Regular Opening hours are 6:00am to
10:00pm each day. The chapel will be
closed during the hours of 10:01pm –
5:59am local time each day; notwithstanding,
the chapel may be made available upon
request for special events during the normal
closed period upon sufficient advance notice
of not less than 24 hours before the event.
Where a corporate event will be hosted during normal opening hours, the event notice
will be clearly displayed on the chapel’s
meeting notice board identifying the faith or
faiths (in the case of interfaith events) and
the type of event.
Booking: Persons/airport stakeholders
wishing to book the chapel for an event/use
outside regular opening hours should contact
the Airport Operations Centre (AOC) for
approval, no less than 24 hours before the
desired event.
Devotional Services: Time will be allotted
for Devotions by airports stakeholders and
the schedule of such activities will be published on the chapel’s meeting notice board
after approval by the Airport Operator. The
nature of these devotions will be ecumenical
and open to all.

Events: The hosting of corporate and group
events in the chapel without the written approval of the Airport Operator is prohibited.
Corporate events must utilize the chapel
within the time allotted; the allotted time will
cover set up, photographs, decorating, clean
up and removal of personal effects.
Special Circumstances / Airport Emergencies: During an emergency or other tragedy
the airport chapel will be made available to
licensed, ordained or credentialed ministers
to conduct counseling to victims’ family, survivors and other affected members of the
public. The Airport Operator will advise airport users, stakeholders, and event organizers of the changes and cancellations which
may become necessary based on circumstances.
Chapel Furniture: Chapel furnishings, including flags, seasonal decorations, and Faith
Books are not to be moved.
The conduct of worship, teaching, practice and observance in the chapel by any
individual or group that is not silent or
that in any way infringes on the ability of
other airport users and stakeholders to
use the facility is prohibited.
Although the policy of allowing use of the
chapel is in keeping with the provisions
of the Jamaican Constitution, no observance, practice or teaching that poses a threat to public safety, incites violence, is illegal, criminal or a public
health risk will be permitted in the chapel. That decision will be at the sole discretion of the Airport Operator.
Soliciting: The taking of contributions,
gifts, or offering is prohibited.
Eating and drinking is prohibited in the
chapel.
Airport users and stakeholders will not rearrange the chapel furniture during personal
use. Rearrangement for corporate events
may be permitted following an appropriate
request to and approval by the Airport Operator. These requests are to be made to the
AOC no less than 24 hours before the desired usage.
Prohibitions: Lectures, preaching, teaching
outside an approved event is prohibited in
the chapel.

Art In Transit - Works Take Off At NMIA
The public-address system crackles and announces the departure of a flight amid familiar scenes
of people moving to the check-in counters, security and airline personnel milling about in the terminal, the whiff of freshly brewed coffee permeating the air ... and a 24-foot tree in the Departures
Concourse (Ticketing Hall)..
A tree, did we say? Yes, you are reading it right; this is not life or the departure lounge moving
alfresco but a towering art installation, the focal point, in the building.
"The Art Sub-committee of AAJ (Airport Authority of Jamaica) was seeking a major work of art for
display in the main check-in hall of the NMIA (Norman Manley International Airport) and an outstanding sculpture of the size required to highlight the check-in hall was identified at the exhibition
at Devon House," said the director of the committee, Joseph A. Matalon.
Laura Facey's 'Walking Tree' was chosen for its sheer size and the concept behind this creation.
According to the artist, this work has been inspired by African combs, a carpenter's plumb bob,
and ladders.
"'A comb untangles, a needle stitches together, a plumb bob finds the centre and a ladder takes
you upward," Facey says of the creation. "I went through a difficult time, as we all do. I had to
untangle my life, stitch it together, find the Divine within me, and go to another level of consciousness.
"'Walking Tree' is one of my combs," she says. "As she walks, she combs, healing the earth as
she goes."
This towering installation unfolds the works of art housed at NMIA.
SHOWCASING CULTURE

The spaces at the airport are dotted with facets of Jamaican art, which showcase the island's
heritage, culture, flora and fauna and the vibrancy and diversity.
Just beyond the check point in Outgoing Immigration is a collection of TWELVE MASTERS,
which is a celebration of Jamaican art pioneers. This display was done in collaboration with the
National Gallery of Jamaica.
Showcased in this selection are paintings of Barrington Watson, Eugene Hyde, Karl Parboosingh, David Pottinger, Colin Garland,
Osmond Watson, Alvin Marriot, John Dunkley, Albert Huie, Mallica 'Kapo' Reynolds, Carl Abrahams, and Edna Manley.
For any country, the airport is the first impression that travellers get as they arrive, and the very last as they leave. NMIA manages
to encapsulate that warmth through sprinkles of artifacts from the island. On the upper deck, the main departure lounge, is the bust
by the Harlem Renaissance master sculptor Richmond Barthe, of Norman Manley, in whose honour the airport has been named.
Two towering panels illustrate Jamaican history, painted specifically for the Norman Manley International Airport in 1985; this installation exudes nostalgia of the old airport that has transitioned to the new building.

Tucked away from the high-traffic areas, Club Kingston, the first-class lounge,
unfolds the sublime art space. On the walls are paintings, highlights of 'Five Top
Things' that are Jamaican, and framed front pages of The Gleaner. A pathway is
lined with photographs of Jamaica's landmarks, people, flora and fauna.
"The idea is to showcase as much of Jamaica's culture, heritage and people,
which leaves a lasting impression with the travellers," said Grace Morrison, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager of AAJ.
Spreading this warmth is an ongoing process. "This (showcasing more art) will
take place over time," said Matalon. "As we progress, the Art Sub-committee will
make recommendations to the main board, who will implement in line with the
budget."
AAJ SCHOOLS’ ART PROJECT 2014
SUBLIME ART SPACE
As a part of this mandate, an annual school-art competition will be launched in September this year. "The winning works will be put
on display in the Departures and Arrivals concourses," Matalon informed. "The inaugural AAJ SCHOOLS’ART PROJECT was
staged last year and several works were selected for prominent display in the Terminal.”
"Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow," says acclaimed Indian author Anita Desai, and travellers passing through
NMIA are sure to take home a piece of Jamaica in their hearts as they head to their destinations.

BLUE AND JOHN CROW MOUNTAINS
INSCRIBED TO UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LIST
On July 3, 2015 JAMAICA’s renowned Blue and John Crow Mountains was inscribed to the world heritage list of the United Nations Educational Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The inscription represents the first world heritage site for Jamaica and the first
mixed – cultural and natural – site for the Caribbean sub-region. It is one of only
32 mixed sites.
JAMAICA now joins the list of iconic sites such as the Great Wall of China, the
Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Taj Mahal of India, Acropolis of Athens in Greece,
Great Barrier Reef of Australia, as well as the Pitons in St Lucia.
World heritage status is given to natural and cultural sites across the globe considered to be of outstanding universal value; meaning sites which possess cultural and natural significance which are so exceptional as to transcend national
boundaries and are of common importance for present and future genera-
tions.
