Achieving Energy Efficiency in Data Centres
Achieving Energy Efficiency in Data Centres Agenda Who we are What we do How we serve the BPO Industry Energy Efficiency for Data Centres Jardine Matheson Founded as a trading company in China in 1832, Jardine Matheson is today a diversified business group focused on Asia. The group employs approximately 300,000 people and had a revenue of US$ 47 billion in 2010. The Group’s range of activities encompass: Engineering and construction Transport services Insurance broking Property investment and development Retailing Restaurants Luxury hotels Motor vehicles and related activities Financial services Heavy equipment Mining Agribusiness Jardine Pacific Jardine Engineering Corporation Shanghai Guangzhou Hong Kong MacauHO Bangkok Manila 88 years experience in Asia US$ 374M turnover over 3,500 people 8 territories Singapore JEC Philippines Incorporated 1998 Fully owned subsidiary of JEC Hong Kong Total employees 548 (Admin 54 / Technical 494) Head office in Makati Provides engineering services for the operation and maintenance of building systems and electrical and mechanical contracting. Specializes in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems and Energy Efficiency Solutions. Enhancing Asia’s Built Environment JEC deploys engineering expertise to enhance Asia’s built environment and operate facilities at a world class standard. 8 9 Services – Operations & Maintenance Monitoring of critical engineering systems such as: HVAC Precision Air Conditioning Power Supply Electrical Systems Building Management Systems Fire Engineering Security Operate engineering systems at peak performance. On site staff monitor equipment. If a minor problem is identified it is rectified immediately. If a major problem it is reported, a 24 hour emergency maintenance team is deployed to solve the issue. Services – Preventive Maintenance Scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance to identify & resolve potential equipment problems before they arise. Perform value-added services such as particle counting, vibration analysis, thermal scanning, and air duct cleaning. Site Inspection Define Equipment Condition Recommendation Implement Solution Services - BPO Customers Provide operations and maintenance services for Ayala Land over 24 sites. Solaris One Vertex One Bonifacio E-Services AN2 Aprisa Services – BPO Customers Provide preventive maintenance, monitoring, and operations for all IBM sites managed by JLL in the Philippines. Services – Other Customers 15 Contracting/Environmental Engineering Total solution design, supply and installation of cooling and other electrical and mechanical systems. Lighting Building Automation Power Solutions Wastewater Treatment Plants Contracting - ePLDT Ventus Call Centre Air Conditioning and Ventilation System Turnkey project cooling system. Designed a cost effective solution with 8 separate systems including roof deck, split type, window type, and package air conditioning systems. System design maximizes energy efficiency and varies operation strength and power consumption according to production needs. Contracting – Wastewater Treatment JEC, in partnership with FF Cruz and Kingsford is designing and constructing 2 sewage treatment plants in Taguig Baybreeze and Taguig Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LNMB) for Manila Water. 40 and 75 Million-Litre-per-Day Sewage Treatment Facility with a combined value of over US$ 80M. Includes 2 year Operation & Maintenance Contract after completion of construction. 19 Sourcing Wide range of equipment and products: HVAC, Precision Air Conditioning, fire, power and electrical, security. Representing major brands, and sourcing on a project basis. Dedicated sourcing office in Shenzhen HVAC Precision Air Conditioning Power Electrical Building Automation Fire Security Boiler Systems Sourcing – Precision Air Conditioning Modular Design: Different combinations used to deliver flexible capacities and rapid replacement of spare parts. Can be broken down into smaller modules for places where space is limited. + Module A Module B Module A + B (20kW) (35kW) (55kW) Energy Efficient Data Centre Design Traditional Cold/Hot Aisle Arrangement Not all cold air from the floor grill enters the server rack. A large portion returns to PAC unit. Not all capacity is used and PAC unit has to be oversized. Airflow Problems in Traditional Arrangements 24OC 45%RH DOWNFLOW PAC Equipment UNIT Rack CITEC DOWNFLOW UNIT 16OC 70%RH As heat load increases, airflow requirements increase and rack draws air from back of rack rather than air grill. Hot Air Loops DOWNFLOW PAC DOWNFLOW UNIT PAC UNIT Equipment Rack Problems With Conventional Cooling Airflow distribution in a Data Centre is difficult to predict. Cool air often bypasses the server racks and passes straight back to the PAC units. Hot air discharged by the racks is drawn back into the racks before being cooled. PAC units have to supply more cool air than should be needed to compensate for the inefficiency. About Conventional Cooling “ 72% of cool air generated by precision air conditioning units does not pass through IT equipment but short cycles back to the PAC unit.” “ 2.6 times more cooling is delivered than is required by the IT equipment load.” 3 Solutions for Enhanced Energy Efficiency 1. Cold Aisle Enclosure Issues: 1) Hot Data Centre 2) Complicated Fire Suppression 35 - 40OC Equipment Rack CITEC DOWNFLOW UNIT 20 - 25OC No longer hot data centre but fire suppression still an issue. 2. Hot Aisle Enclosure 35 - 40OC /16 – 23%RH Equipment Rack CITEC DOWNFLOW UNIT 20 - 25OC / 40-55%RH 3. Heat Containment System (The CITEC Solution) 35 - 40OC /16 – 23%RH Intelligent fan monitors pressure, temperature & humidity to ensure the rack is kept at the correct temperature. Back-up fan blades are built in for additional security. CITEC Intelligent Fan Equipment Rack CITEC DOWNFLOW UNIT 20 - 25OC / 40-55%RH Solid rear panel on the server rack Heat Containment – Rack View CITEC DOWNFLOW UNIT Solution eliminates the need for a hot aisle. Racks do not have to face each other. Equipment Equipment Rack Rack Heat Containment Rack (CITEC Solution) Traditional Rack Perforated panel restricts airflow, pressure must build up inside the rack to enable air flow. Fan draws hot air out of the rack. Ensure hot air is extracted effectively. Some hot air is drawn back to the front due to lower pressure. Backing plate ensures only cold air is drawn through equipment . Rear panel Benefits of Heat Containment (The CITEC Solution) No hot aisle, the whole data centre is cold. No circulating hot air. Consistent temperature from bottom of the server rack to top. Increased PAC Unit efficiency. Precise control over temperature of air delivered to server racks. Allow higher capacity with lower airflow.
