A Letter from a PSD Principal
Mark Wertheimer, Principal at Traut Middle
School 2005-2015
“For the nine years I have been
principal at Traut Core Knowledge School, the
B.A.S.E. Camp program has been an important
partner in our operations. The staff and
leadership of this program have joined us in
pursuit of our vision of “educational excellence
in knowledge, skills and character with strong
parent-teacher-student partnerships.” The
legacy of this partnership goes back even
before my time here!
“Parents feel safe with their
students in B.A.S.E. Camp, and this allows
them to focus on their work and personal
responsibilities, knowing their children are
being well-cared-for until they can pick them
up. Parents know that their children will
receive the attention, nurturing, and guidance
they need—just like when they are in the
classroom.
“Many engaging educational, physical,
social, and fun activities take place in B.A.S.E.
Camp. One afternoon the students might
embark on a unique and creative project
invented by the staff. At other times they
engage in recess or movement-based learning
activities (Academics in Action). If they need
extra help or time doing schoolwork, they can
get help and a quiet place to work.
“I know that if I were a working
parent needing day care, I would have my
child stay right at his school and go to B.A.S.E
Camp when I had to work late or early!”
Meet Melanie Duncan: Featured
Site Director
School: Kruse Elementary
Favorite thing about BC:
It’s such an honor to watch
the kids grow up. We are
with them for 6 years and get
to be an integral part of their
growth.
Favorite Food: My mom’s
chicken and dumplings.
What you hope every kid learns at BC:
Social and academic skills, WHILE having fun!
Dream Vacation: Australia
Kids: Emalyn, 6; Maddie, 3
How long have you been with BC? 10
years!
“I love my job. Being a parent has made me a
better Site Director and being a Site Director
has made me a better parent. I love getting to
do both.”
B.A.S.E Camp Chooses to be
Licensed for Your Child’s Benefit
Mary Rutledge, Program Coordinator Lead
All 32 B.A.S.E. Camp programs are
licensed by the Colorado Department of
Human Services, Division of Child Care. Over
the past few years, I have been asked several
times by parents and others, “What exactly
does it mean to be licensed and what benefits
does this provide for my child’s experience
while attending B.A.S.E. Camp?” It’s important
to note that licensed child care brings with it
regulations that seem different for the child
from that of the school day. Some of benefits
of licensed child care are:
-Health and Safety Regulations
are monitored daily by staff and by DHS
at least once per year. Facilities and staff
are observed for best practices and to test
knowledge of these important areas. Health
and Safety compliance is also supported by
the Larimer County Health Department in
conjunction with DHS. In addition, programs
must complete fire, tornado, lock-in and lockout drills at least monthly.
-Licensing mandates B.A.S.E. Camp’s
employees working with children must
be Qualified and Trained Staff at the
director, program leader, and assistant levels.
Qualifications vary per position, but range from
a 4-year related degree to hundreds of hours
working with school-aged children. The benefit
is that children are getting a better overall
experience with social-emotional support,
problem solving, academic support, and more.
In addition to qualified staff requirements, all
staff must complete CBI and FBI clearance to
work with your children.
-Staff are required to seek out 15
hours of additional Safety and Professional
Development Training each year. Site
leaders are required to have CPR, First Aid,
and Medication Administration trainings.
B.A.S.E. Camp provides all staff multiple
opportunities throughout the year to attend
trainings that will intentionally impact their
work with children. In addition, we send staff
to both local and national conferences as part
of their paid professional development hours.
-As part of providing Superior
Supervision, staff are required to be
interacting with children at all times. B.A.S.E.
Camp must provide a method of all children
to be signed in and out of program and
knowledge of where all children are at all
times. Children are never to be left unattended
and children may not leave the program to
go to other areas of the school without an
adult. If direct interaction is unavailable, staff
must be within sight and sound of all enrolled
children. B.A.S.E. Camp utilizes a document
called Master Name to Face. This is a tool you
will see staff use when your child arrives and
departs the program. It allows for staff to not
only know how many children they have, but
exactly what children are in attendance at any
given moment.
As you can see, being a licensed
facility has many benefits to your child and the
entire program. If ever you have questions or
concerns about licensing rules and regulations
or its implementation in B.A.S.E. Camp, please
feel free to call 303-866-5958.

B.A.S.E. Camp is a 501c3 nonprofit. On average, 30% of students
during the school year and 60% of students during Summer
Camp receive partial or full financial aid. Our sliding scale fee
and scholarships make it possible for hundreds of local families
to receive quality, safe care so parents can work. Please consider
making a tax-deductible donation to B.A.S.E Camp this holiday
season through our website at www.mybasecampkids.org and
make a difference in the lives of youth in Larimer County.

B.A.S.E. Camp Partners with CSU
to Impact Students’ Lives
Mary Beth Solano & Amanda Christman,
Program Coordinators
In addition to B.A.S.E. Camp’s highly
qualified paid staff who run our programs
every day, we also bring in volunteers who can
make an impact on our students. Volunteers
can make a big impact in a child’s life. Reading
together, teaching special skills or just being
a friend are but a few of the ways volunteers
are valued at B.A.S.E. Camp. We are in need
of both groups and individuals to support our
programs. We work to make our volunteers’
experience as meaningful and enriching as
possible.
Recently a group of CSU students from
the School of Social Work volunteered. They
met with an individual student once a week
most of the year. The results were extremely
beneficial for the children, but also had great
impact on the CSU Students, as expressed so
eloquently in letters we recently received:
“Making a lasting impression on a
child’s life means the world to me. I am so
thankful to say that I was able to play a role
in all that B.A.S.E. Camp is about. I can say
with the utmost sincerity and certainty that
only positive experiences came out of this
opportunity!” --Taylor S.
“I got to help JR grow and strive in
areas of leadership and academics. I watched
him mature and his patience developed. I
was blown away to see how his social skills
improved over time. Since working with JR, I
made the decision that working with children
is my life’s passion. I will be eternally grateful
for this opportunity.” --Sophie C.
“J. was so reclusive at first, and had
seen more than any 8 year old should have
to. I couldn’t get him to discuss anything. But
with time and patience, something changed.
One day he let me join him playing Legos
instead of just watching. Then he offered up
what he did that week and before in great
detail. It was the most rewarding moment!!
When I had to say good bye in May, he told
me he would miss me and that I was the only
one who listened to him. That’s when I knew
that not only had I changed his life, but he
had changed MINE!” --Brittany G.
“Seeing the impact that consistent
kindness and service can make in the life of a
child has encouraged me to further consider
working with children in the future. I want
to especially commend the Site Director
who collaborated so well with me. I will
look back to her as a vivid example of what
cooperation can look like between two helping
professionals.” --Jarred P.
Volunteers are an integral part of what
we do. If you are interested in sharing your
time and talents with us, please call our office
or visit us online at www.mybasecampkids.org.
Welcome to B.A.S.E. Camp!
B.A.S.E. Camp and Food Bank for
Larimer County Make a Difference
Lindsey Sutherland, Program Coordinator
Thanks to the hard work of the Food
Bank for Larimer County’s Programs Director,
Bruce Wallace, and team, a partnership
between the Food Bank and B.A.S.E. Camp
was developed and launched in 2014. Through
the Kids Café Program, the Food Bank for
Larimer County provided Summer B.A.S.E.
Camp with nutritious, chef-prepared lunches
and snacks for over 250 children daily during
summer camp. That’s 24,500 meals over
summer 2015, with no cost to families!
The Summer Camp program is an
important resource for families of all income
levels. Because about 60% of attendees
qualify for free-and-reduced lunch, B.A.S.E.
Camp and our students were able to benefit
from this impactful partnership!
Choose B.A.S.E. Camp for School
Out Days
Amanda Christman, Program Coordinator
At B.A.S.E. Camp we are always
looking for ways to better service families
of Larimer County. As we look at the 2015 –
2016 school year, we will be offering a variety
of programming options for kids. Currently,
B.A.S.E. Camp School Out Day (SOD) care is
for grades K – 5th. Our SOD programing will
be able to cover families in need of care on 20
of the 27 days when school is closed.
Our traditional programs with
enrichment activities will continue for students
in K - 5th grades. All SOD’s consist of a theme
and most days have either a field trip or a
guest speaker. We are always looking for
community members to share their knowledge
and expertise with our students. If you know
of someone who would be interested in
sharing, please e-mail
amandac@mybasecampkids.org.
We are excited to announce our first
elementerytheme for the 2015 – 2016 school
year: Life as a Pioneer. This school year, we
are also extending our SOD programs to
include 6-8th graders. Middle school programs
will have a separate theme and also feature
a daily field trip. This programing will be
designed as age appropriate and relevant to
their interests.
If your child has experienced our traditional
programming and is interested in improving
their active skills, then our new Sports Camp
will be a great fit for you. We host Sports
Camp alongside our other SOD programs.
Students will learn a new sport, improve
mechanics, and have the opportunity to learn
important team dynamics.
As each SOD approaches please check
in with your Site Director for more information
or go to our website
www.mybasecampkids.org. Registration closes
48 hours prior to the first day of care. Space
permitting, walk-ins could be available. To
register for K-5th Grade SODs, Sports Camp
or Middle School SOD, please log into your
account on daycareworks.com. Please use this
calendar to identify SODs for this school year.
We look forward to supporting your family.
