President’s Message
Keith Nabb, President
As the new President of the Council, I am excited and honored to be in
this position for the next year. Over the past two years I have served as the
incoming president and have been mentored by recent President Rosalind
Bennett and past President John Williams. This special organization has
grown tremendously from the days of having few volunteers and little money in the budget. I
will do my best to implement the transformative processes and goals that have been established by our past boards and Presidents.
In the past 5 years we have gone from a budget of around $3000 (which really was just a
subsidy from the County), to a robust annual budget of $16,000 coupled with In-kind dona(Continued on page 2)

Safety Checks
By Benita Summers
Nearly 20 million seniors ages 65 and older
visit the emergency room each year, with
almost a third of the
visits related to
injuries.1Many injuries
are sustained in the place
seniors should feel
safest: their home. In
fact, 65 percent of senior homes have at least
one potential safety issue, according to adult
children of seniors surveyed by Home
Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead
Senior Care® network. However, almost half
of all home accidents by seniors (48 percent)
can be avoided according to a recent survey
of emergency room doctors.1
These preventable home hazards, such as
throw rugs or loose railings, can be
particularly harmful, leading to falls and
injuries that can impact seniors’ ability to
live independently. However, the majority of

tions of much more than that. The Patronage program established by my predecessors has been implemented in excellent
fashion and over 90% of our patrons renew annually. This
program is a way for the business community to gently reach
our membership and contribute to the health of our organization and message.
Our past boards have implemented new volunteer training and
development methods. Our volunteers now get training on the
History of the Council, Senior Abuse, Senior Housing, Senior
Healthcare, Social Services, and the other Senior Organizations in the county.
We now partner more than ever with professional organizations, local police, local governments, local professionals, and
others to bring education to our membership and enhance all
Gwinnett seniors’ welfare.
I have been actively fundraising for the Council since I came
on board. We have found sponsors for the annual Christmas
dance, the Lifestyle showcase, the Volunteer awards luncheon, our newsletter costs, and much more. We are now able to
set aside money in a rainy day fund to assure the future financial stability of the Council.
We have recently updated our very old By-Laws to reflect the
many changes of our Council.
My goals are to help the Council reach out to the many segments of our community that are unaware of the Council or
misunderstand our mission. We need to be known as a true
resource to all of our Gwinnett seniors and their organizations. I plan to actively seek the opinions of our current membership to make sure we are serving their needs properly. I
have an organizational goal of developing leaders for our future executive boards from our volunteers, program chairs,
and elected board.
The tremendous team of volunteers that we have serving as
committee members in the Information Center and on our
Executive Board are testament to the value and mission of the
Council. Such wonderful people would not give up their precious time for something unless it is worthwhile, well-run,
and has a positive future. I applaud all of our many volunteers
and am amazed at their ongoing commitment. Please thank
these volunteers when you meet them.
The Council is now in a position to serve better than ever. I
look forward to serving you all and I am open to your suggestions and comments. Please help me to help you and your organization thrive.
Thank you,
Keith Nabb
Blue Cross Blue Shield Sponsor
We are very proud to introduce Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Georgia as our newsletter sponsor. Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Georgia has committed a large sum of money towards the
printing and distribution costs for the next three quarterly
GCFS newsletters. The financial relief of this sponsorship
will allow the Council to expand distribution, improve our
budget and better fulfill our mission of education and connection with Gwinnett’s Senior population. What a generous
community partner Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia is!
Thank you!
Health and Wellness
Are you ready to enjoy your summer and
be healthy at the same time? The biggest
thing you can do for your health in the
summer is to stay hydrated. Make sure you
are drinking 8 glasses of water a day and
while you are doing that, make sure you
are moving each day, even if only to refill
that water glass.
There are many healthy, fun things to do in
the summer. Exercise in the morning or evening when it is
cooler. Visit our county parks, which are the best in the nation! Try new things. I am teaching aqua classes at Rhodes
Jordan Pool in June and July and would love to see you there.
Classes are Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm and Wednesday
mornings at 10:00 am.
Most of all, be positive in your health. Speak positively to
yourself and be kind to yourself. The more you help you, the
more you can help others.
I look forward to seeing you again at our meeting in September, when I will demonstrate exercises you can do with a
broomstick! So be ready! Have a great summer and smile!

seniors (85 percent) haven’t taken any steps to prepare their
homes for their changing needs as they grow older.
“The home should be the safest and most comfortable place
for aging seniors,” says Benita Summers of the Home Instead
Senior Care office serving Snellville. “It is critical for
families and seniors to invest the time in identifying the
necessary home safety modifications to ensure a safe
environment.”
“An annual safety check can help seniors avoid dangers that
could threaten their independence,” said Summers. “When
we go into homes, we see a lot dangerous conditions that are
easily overlooked by those who are familiar with the home.
Most of the time, the fixes are relatively easy and
affordable.”
To help families make senior homes safe and reduce the risk
of injury, the Home Instead Senior Care office serving
Snellville is offering free home safety checks conducted by
local senior care experts throughout June. The safety checks
will be provided at no cost on a time-available basis.
To request a free home safety check or the home safety
checklist, please call the Snellville Office of Home Instead
Senior Care at (770) 972-2273.

Faith Based Clubs Support Seniors
Many churches have a senior adult ministry as a vital part
of the church congregation. Many of these ministries focus
on spiritual, social, physical and educational needs of their
parishioners.
The Council for Seniors is excited that six faith based
clubs are members of the Council:
 Joy Club – Harmony Grove United Methodist Church
 Prime Timers with McKendree United Methodist
Church
 Seniors Are Special with Mountain Park United Methodist Church
 OASIS (Older Adults Still in Service) with Eastminister Presbyterian Church
 Salem Seasoned Saints – Salem Missionary Baptist
Church
 Seniors at 12 Stone – 12 Stone Church – Central Campus
Are you a member of a Senior Ministry? Contact the
Council about becoming one of our members.
“The Stars of Gwinnett” - GCFS 28th Annual
Awards Luncheon
Sheri and Bill Eppright
We love attending the annual Gwinnett Council for Seniors
Awards Luncheon and this year was no exception. Presidents
from more than forty senior clubs and organizations take time
each year to publically recognize one senior member for his/her
outstanding volunteer contribution as part of their “Active Positive Lifestyle” (A.P.L.). Just imagine the energy of a couple
hundred “Apples” in one room!
This year’s fabulous luncheon with a Hollywood theme was provided by Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett. Encouraging words from
a smiling John Wayne (“Thanks for saddling up, Volunteers
have true Grit!”) and a seductive Marilyn Monroe (“Volunteers
are like diamonds – worth their weight in gold!”) provided the
perfect backdrop for these “Stars of Gwinnett” to shine as they
were honored for their contributions. The food and service were
both outstanding, and the company was even better!
Guest speaker Gayle Alston, Director at Rosalyn Carter Institute
for Caregiving Training Center, offered words of encouragement
and helpful stress relief tips for caregivers, such as taking time
to breathe deeply in times of stress and always scheduling
