Laredo City Manager Olivares Receives One of
Rotary’s Highest Service Honors
Paul Harris Fellow Recognition bestowed by District 5930
(Laredo, TX – April 25, 2016) City of Laredo City Manager Jesus Olivares was honored by
Rotary District 5930 at their annual conference and banquet dinner this past Saturday, April 23,
2016, with an audience of 150 attendees looking on at the Ramada Plaza Hotel. The award was
presented by Marilyn K. Bedell, Rotary International President’s Representative. The purpose of
the awards program portion of the event is to honor Rotarians in the district, as well as other
community members that exemplify the service values of the organization. Two special dinner
attendees received the Paul Harris Fellow honor: Olivares and Hector “Tito” Garcia, General
Manager of La Posada Hotel.
Each of the award recipients received a medallion, a lapel pin and a certificate with the signature
logo silhouette of Paul Harris. The Paul Harris Fellow award is one that honors the founder of
the organization and those selected for each award must exemplify the “service above self”
motto of the group. This was a first time honor for both recipients. A donation in the amount of
$1,000.00 per recipient was donated to the Rotary Foundation in each recipient’s name which is
used to fund local, district, national, and international projects.
“I appreciate everything that our local Rotary Clubs do to give back to the community of Laredo
and I am just thankful to have received this honor,” stated City Manager Olivares, in his remarks
to the dinner attendees that evening.
The dinner event was part of an extensive three-day Rotary Assembly and Conference agenda set
by the District 5930 conference planning committee April 22-24 at La Posada Hotel. The
weekend encompassed a variety of activities including class room-style presentations and
speaker sessions; a simultaneous youth program; an opening and welcoming reception at San
Agustin Plaza; shopping tour; Historical Walk for Polio; a Sunday-morning Memorial Service
followed by concluding remarks.
