The Hôtel de Sers, a five-star ‘baby-palace’
In 1880, Henri-Léopold Charles, the Marquis de Sers, acquired a magnificent parcel of land in
Paris, ideally located in the 8th arrondissement just a short distance from the Champs-Elysées.
This area of the city was then home to the aristocracy, whose beautiful homes competed
with each other in terms of luxury and elegance, and remain today symbols of the Belle
Epoque style. The Marquis de Sers decided to have his own hôtel particulier (private
residence) built there and called upon the architect Jules Pellechet to design it for him.
The building’s classically inspired design follows the Haussmann spirit that was the height of
fashion toward the end of the Second Empire of Napoleon III and has all the prestige elements
of the era, in particular a specially designed carriage entrance which gave direct access to a
monumental staircase and a splendid reception room.
The four-storey building bears witness to the luxurious standards of the period: the ground
floor housed the service rooms; the first floor was reserved for guests and was divided
between guest bedrooms and drawing rooms; the second floor had the owners’ bedrooms; and
the servants’ accommodation occupied the top floor.

Over the years a number of changes have been made to the original house, including raising of
the roofline and the construction of another building next door. At the beginning of the twentieth
century this considerable enlargement enabled the former private home to be developed into
a palatial healthcare establishment. Later still, on further remodelling in 1935, it was converted
into a hotel for travellers. When new to France in the mid-nineteenth century, the concept of a
hotel as we would now recognise the term consisted not only of providing rooms and a restaurant
for clients, but also of offering visits to places of interest to tourists. The conversion into a hotel
was completely in tune with contemporary changes in Parisian lifestyle and the development
of the areas around the main streets of the capital. Since then, the Hôtel de Sers has continued
to welcome guests and provide services for their pleasure.
In 2002 it was decided to renovate the establishment, with emphasis being put not only on the
historical character of the building, but also on variety. And so it was that spaciousness and
light became the hallmarks of the 45 bedrooms and 7 suites, expressing discreet luxury through
completely new and contemporary design and decoration.
The ultimate accolade came in 2009, when the Hôtel de Sers was honoured to receive its fifth star.

The Marquis de Sers, the character
behind the hotel
Henri-Léopold Charles de Sers, son of Messire Armand Louis Melchior de Sers and Dame
Gabrielle Julie Hortense Jougla de Paraza, was born in Toulouse on 25 October 1822.
Former pupil of the Royal Military College of Saint-Cyr and descendant of a noble family of the
former Province of Languedoc, the Marquis de Sers started his military career during the reign
of Louis-Philippe (1830-1848). As a Captain of Hussars he took part in the Crimean War
(1853-1856) and was awarded the Légion d’Honneur. He also fought in the Italian campaign
(1859) before taking off his uniform for the last time in 1860.
In 1859, the Marquis de Sers married Louise Henriette Marie Jougla de Paraza, whose maternal
family owned the Château de Madon, in Candé, 15 km (10 miles) from Blois. He later became
mayor of that commune.
When in 1871 he was elected député of Loir-et-Cher, an apartment in Paris became essential. In
keeping with his position as a man of the world, he acquired a plot of land a mere stone’s throw
from the Champs-Elysées, in an area much sought after by the aristocracy and the upper

Decoration in classical style with
contemporary zest
In this rediscovery of its origins, the Hôtel de Sers is proud to show off the vast, 22-metre long
gallery which now links the different areas of the hotel: a sober and discreet reception area,
the monumental staircase which serves the former ‘prestige floor’ of the Marquis’s residence
and also the grand salon, which has been restored to its full volume.
The bedrooms, which were redecorated in 2012 by the architect Christophe Daudré, are reached
by lifts in the new building, where clients can have a break by enjoying a beautiful and recently
renovated library-loundge designed by Vidalenc Thomas.
The bedrooms, which were redecorated in 2012 by the architect Christophe Daudré, are reached
by lifts in the new building, in which can also be found a wonderful library and drawing room.
The charm of these spacious bedrooms is enhanced by the small items of furniture made to
measure in rosewood in a reflection of classical French furnishing. Only the most noble of
materials have been chosen for the decoration, fabrics and chair coverings, such as taffeta,
wool and leather.
In each of the forty-five bedrooms and seven suites hang portraits of historical figures of the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Two of the seven suites are designated panoramic suites:
from their magnificent furnished terraces, guests have breathtaking views over Paris and its finest
monuments.

A hotel in the French feminine plural
ANNE JOUSSE
Anne Jousse is president of the Bessé Signature hotel group and a member of the owning
family. In 2003, after more than 20 years as an insurance broker for large French industrial
groups and at the same time a Judge at the commercial court, she took up the hotel business.
She transformed the Domaine de la Bretesche (in Brittany - www.bretesche.com), a property
bought by her father on love at first sight, into a luxurious and charming Relais & Châteaux with
a starred restaurant, magnificent private salons and one of the finest golf courses in the west
of France.
Also in 2003, she encouraged her family to buy the now well-known Hôtel Bel-Ami
(www.hotel-bel-ami.com), which had attracted her by its ideal location in the heart of Saint-Germain
des-Prés, in Paris. Further dream locations were the Hôtel Edouard 7 (www.edouard7hotel.com)
and the Hôtel de Sers (www.hoteldesers.com). The latter has been remodelled into an environment
which combines fascinating history (that of the Marquis de Sers) with the flamboyant luxury of
the Haussmann era, yet all is in keeping with the demands of the twenty-first century.
Most recently the Hôtel Vernet (www.hotelvernet.com) has been added to the list of establishments
belonging to the Bessé Signature group. These hotels are the backbone of the new Bessé
Signature group, whose philosophy is to provide hotels in the spirit of our times.
Anne Jousse plans to develop the group through cultivating the personality of each establishment
and a spirit that comes from family ownership, for her synonymous with incomparable quality
of service.
Finally, in last february, the Montalembert Hotel (www.hotel-montalembert.fr) joined Bessé
Signature, located in the Left Bank, not far from the Bel Ami.
JENNIFER BOCCARA
After gaining valuable experience as the commercial and marketing director of the Hotel
Warwick Champs-Elysées, with the group Hôtels et Résidences du Roy (Hotel California and Royal
Hôtel in Paris), and later at the Concorde Lafayette, Jennifer Boccara became General Manager
of the Hôtel de la Paix in Geneva, which had then been taken over by the Concorde Hotels group.

In 2004, a few months after the l’Hôtel de Sers was opened, Jennifer Boccara took over the
direction of this baby palace with the unceasing aim to surpass the quality of all that is on offer,
and with unequalled dynamism and insistence on high standards in order to make this
exceptional hotel the place to be.
In December 2013, she was also appointed General Manager of the Edouard7 Hotel.

A gastronomic table
No stay at the Hôtel de Sers would be complete without a gourmet visit to the gastronomic
restaurant – a bright, colourful and contemporary environment.
The Restaurant De Sers, under the leadership
of its chef Jordan Delamotte, offers modern
French cuisine prepared from carefully selected
products. Its innovative menu is regularly
renewed in order to offer as far as is possible
products that are in season.
The Restaurant De Sers was redecorated in
2013 by the architect Michel Cancio Martins,
and now basks in a bright, modern atmosphere
benefitting from natural light from the internal
terrace. In winter, the terrace is transformed
into a heated patio protected by an arbour
roof, and becomes the Salon Signature.
Every Sunday, the brunch, served from 11.30am to 3.30pm, is an invitation to enjoy your weekend
to the full among friends or family.
