TEVET-SHEVAT-ADAR 5773 JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2013 A BOUQUET OF ROSES TO OUR 2013 DINNER DANCE HONOREE MARTINE JAFFE SUNDAY JUNE 9, 2013 CLIFTON JEWISH CENTER 2:30PM Martine Jaffe has been a member of the CJC for almost 40 years. Her relationship began with an interview she did for a college course with Doris Jaffe, the Executive Director in 1971. She subsequently married at the CJC, had her two daughters named in the Grober Chapel, and watched them grow and participate in the Hebrew School as well as "clibing nachas" at their respective Bat Mitzvahs. Over the years Martine became active wearing many hats on many committees and soon became a member of the Board of Directors. In 2008 she proposed to the Board to begin a singles program and established the North Jersey Jewish Singles Group to help meet the needs of the Adult Single Community. After almost 5 years the group has over 800 people on a "meetup up"website. We salute Martine for all her wonderful accomplishments. The Torah tells us, " For man is a tree of the field", (Deuteronomy 20:19). The Jewish calendar reserves one day each year, the New Year for Trees on the 15th of Shevat for us to contemplate our affinity with our botanical analogue and what it can teach us about our lives. The trees' primary components are: the roots, which anchor it to the ground and supply it with water and other nutrients, the trunk, branches and leaves comprise its body and the fruit which contains the seeds by which the tree reproduces itself. For us, mankind, the roots represent our faith and traditions bequeathed to us by our parents and ancestors. The trunk, branches and leaves represent our endeavors and our intellectual, emotional and practical achievements in life. The fruit represents our ability to procreate: in a literal sense, our children, and in a figurative manner., the ability to influence others, to teach, to plant a seed in a fellow human being and see it sprout, grow and bear fruit. On Saturday evening February 23rd at 7:00pm we begin the celebration of Purim. Though it is considered a "minor holiday, " the lessons and teachings are profound. We read the Megillah, the Scroll of Esther, which is the only book of the Bible without G-d's name. However, as the story of Queen Esther, Mordechai, Haman and King Ahasuerus unfolds, we clearly see the hand of G-d orchestrating all events to a happy finale. It teaches us that not only is G-d present today, although hidden, his intervention is constant and immediate. Also, the things we are searching for are actually hidden in just the places we least expect to find them. It is during this holiday that Jews celebrate a positive reversal of fortune and rediscover G-d. It's like children who play hide and seek and are overjoyed when they find the person they are searching for. It is this holiday that sets the stage for Passover. Rabbi Ari Korenblit ISRAEL BONDS It is always a good time to consider Israel Bonds for your savings. Israel Bonds have never defaulted on payment of principal or interest since the first bonds were issued in 1951.To purchase a bond, please call the Center 973-772-3131 The Bulletin Page 4 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I Hello Everyone, By the time you get to read this, Chanukah will have come and gone. I hope you all enjoyed this very joyous holiday. On Sunday December 9th we held our CJC/ Sisterhood Chanukah party. The sandwiches and latkes along with all the other goodies were just great. A BIG THANKS goes out to Aaron, Elinor, Karen, Iris, Barbara, Shirley, Helen, Stanley, Bernie, Betty and Gio for all their help in making this event the success that it was. The clown show was entertaining and enjoyed by all our members and their guests. The clowns want to thank you for the food and positive remarks offered to them after the show. As they were packing up their props and the sound system they told me that of all the shows they do during the year the CJC treats them the best.. They appreciate our hospitality and would love to come back in the future. THAT MADE MY DAY. The best part of this party was the attendance. It was wonderful to see so many of our members and their families. Congratulations to Pauline and Stanley Grossel, our raffle winners. On December 12th we had our annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony at Clifton City Hall. The weather was perfect, the children were in fine tune singing Chanukah songs led by Rabbi Korenblit and the refreshments were enjoyed by all. I want to thank Mayor Anzaldi and his staff for their hospitality. In talking with Mayor Anzaldi he thought that the CJC has been lighting the menorah at City Hall for approximately 30 years. That is a testament to the wonderful relationship we have with the city. The Saturday Service of December 15th was in memory of our beloved Max Birnbaum. Max is missed by us all. December 22nd we celebrated the Bat Mitzvah of Izabella Frima Braun. Izabella performed wonderfully and I am sure her parents, grand parents and the rest of her family and friend were very proud of her. Congratulations to the Braun family. I want to thank Alan Prostick for the relining of the interior of the ark in the Grober Chapel. The finished product is beautiful. In closing, Iris and I and our children want to wish you and your loved ones a very HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR. Malvin Gang SINGLES GROUP The North Jersey Jewish Singles Group organized by Martine Jaffe and sponsored by the Clifton Jewish Center continues to be popular for singles in their 40’s-70’s. On Sat. Dec. 8th we had a Chanukah Dance attended by 65 people. A great time was had by all with lots of food, schmoozing, dancing the Hora, as well as Party favorites. The DJ ran the "grab bag gift game" and everyone had a lot of fun. The next Brunch is scheduled for January 20th from 11:30-2:30pm, featuring Square Dance Callers Ron & Ruthie Kapnick. CJC members are welcome to participate 12:30-2:30pm. Group Photo and Alan Voles DJ The Bulletin Page 5 TU B’SHEVAT - NEW YEAR OF TREES Tu B’Shevat , the new year for the Trees will be celebrated on Saturday January 26th. The word “Tu,” pronounced “too” is constructed from the Hebrew letters “tet” and “vav”. “Tet” is the ninth letter in the Hebrew alphabet; “vav” is the sixth. Nine + Six = Fifteen. B’Shevat means in the month of Shevat. The custom on Tu B’Shevat is to eat fruits from the seven species for which the Land of Israel is praised: ...a land of wheat and barley and (grape) vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and (date) honey (Deut. 8:8). The proper blessing before eating the fruit is: Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elohai-nu Melech HaOlam boray pri ha-aitz. Blessed are you God, King of the Universe, Who creates the fruit of the tree. On Tu B’Shevat, it is also customary to eat a new fruit (a seasonal fruit that you have not yet tasted this season), and to say the following blessing: Baruch Atah Ado-nai, Elohai-nu Melech HaOlam, sheh-he-che-yanu vi-kee-yimanu vi-hee-gee-yanu laz -man ha-zeh. Blessed are You God, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season. SISTERHOOD Shalom from Sisterhood! By the time you read this article, the Clifton Jewish Center/Sisterhood Chanukah Party will have taken place. The deli heroes were a great hit and the latkes were the best ever! Those of you who weren’t there missed a fun-filled afternoon. If you have not already done so, please send in your Sisterhood membership dues to the Center. Dues are $25.00 per person and $30.00 per couple. As always, don’t forget Sisterhood for your Golden Book needs. Please contact Barbara Klausner at 973-471-0151. We the Sisterhood Presidium and our families wish all of you and your families, a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013. L’Hitraot, Elinor, & Fran Sisterhood Presidium Dear Members Winter is upon us and the snowbirds have started to depart for warmer locations. This leaves a void in our morning MINYAN and FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES If you can attend the MINYAN on Mon. or Thurs. at 8:00am or Sun. at 8:30am and Friday evening at 7:30pm , please make every effort to do so. Help us maintain these very important religious services. Your attendance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and I look forward to seeing you there.-Mal Gang The Bulletin Page 6 CJC/SISTERHOOD CHANUKAH PARTY DECEMBER 9, 2012 "Pappa Razzi Pied" The Bulletin Page 7 TEMPLE TALES By Glen Poller Miriam and Henry Poller I can still remember as a young boy how my father would come home from work, eat dinner, relax a bit, and then take out a list of names and telephone numbers which he would start calling. I could still hear his voice in my head as each phone call began. "Hello, this is Henry Poller calling on behalf of…" As early as I can recall, my father was involved in all kinds of Jewish organizations and causes. If he wasn't on the phone soliciting, he might have been busy voicing his opinion at a meeting, formulating policy or advocating for Jewish education and institutions. In 1976-1978, when I was a student at Hillel Academy, my father served as President of the school after years of consecutive tenures of holding other offices. As a Holocaust survivor, he always believed that every Jewish child should be afforded a yeshiva Day School education. As Chairman of the scholarship committee he gave many children this chance to grow up learning Jewish law and bringing it into their homes. Many families kept Kosher homes, joined synagogues and observed Jewish traditions due to their children's enrollment in Hillel during those years. Many of them were my friends. As you know my family has been members of the CJC for many, many years. Henry has been on the Executive Board for decades, serving in various capacities including President and has been counsel to other presidents during their terms. Throughout my adolescent years, he held the office of Israel Bonds Chairperson. We would sit as a family stuffing envelopes and then taping them to the sanctuary chairs each year before Yom Kippur. My father's love for the Center has spearheaded his involvement at every possible level. Especially since his retirement, he has played an intricate role in managing the daily affairs of the front office, balancing the annual budget, renting office space to tenants (including the nursery school) which has been essential to the survival of our shul. Henry has been Chairman of the Menorah cemetery for the past 24 years, an office he serves in earnest and with great affection. A number of years ago he worked out a fabulous maintenance contract for perpetual care of the ground. Through his business acumen, he has "wheeled and dealed" to bring in tens of thousands of dollars acting on behalf of the CJC during his chairmanship. . . The Bulletin Page 8 TEMPLE TALES cont… He was instrumental in the relocation of the Jewish memorial Chapel to its Allwood Road location. He has served on the executive board for may years performing various duties. He was one of the founders responsible for establishing the Holocaust Memorial Library in the Clifton/Passaic YM-YWHA and organized the annual holocaust Memorial program there while serving the Jewish Federation. While my father was doing all this, someone had to raise the children and maintain the home life of our family. My mother, Miriam contributed as a remarkable homemaker for five children. My father has reiterated on many occasions that he never could have accomplished half of what he did in his life if not for his wife, partner and best friend. The days were long and nights were longer with mother always sitting with one of us, helping with homework and projects. She gave of herself without limits and cared for extended family, including taking in her own parents when they needed special care and grandchildren who presented her with many ongoing challenges. Never having had the chance to attend college as a youngster, my mother went back to school a few years following the birth of her fourth child. She attended college for the next seven years earning a degree in Special Education, graduating as a member of a national honor society for academic excellence and with glowing recommendations from her professors. She opted to remain home where she was needed the most by her children, occasionally substituting in Hillel where she could be close to us.. Her devotion to us over the past sixty years is the basis of our collective happiness and success as a family. We begin our fast at daybreak on Thurs. Feb 21st and it ends at nightfall. The Megillah (Scroll of Esther) reading will take place in the synagogue, Saturday evening Feb 23rd at 7:00pm and Sunday morning Feb. 24th at 8:30am. Please come in costume on Saturday night. During the reading of the Megillah we sound the grogger or other noisemaker every time we hear the name of the arch-anti-Semite Haman. By doing that we are fulfilling a biblical commandment of "erasing the name Amalek" who was the direct ancestor of Haman and the archetype of all anti-semites. During Purim we send Shalach manos which are gifts of food: two different kinds of ready to eat foods. i.e., an apple and a cookie, to at least one friend. We also do Maatonos Laanyim, give charity to at least two needy people. In the afternoon of February 24th we eat a celebratory meal. Some have a tradition to imbibe more than usual to fulfill the tradition of Ad D'Lo Yada-to not be able to distinguish between the righteous Mordechai and the evil Haman. The most important aspect of Purim is to be Happy. This January he will be 108 years young. Yes he is starting to show his age. Getting up to walk is tougher so we use a wheel chair to take him out. He still answers that he is still kicking, when asked how he is doing. He still has a good handshake. Joe roots for the Mets, Jets and the Giants. He is a great sportsman. They say that he is the oldest man in the State of New Jersey. However, there is a woman in Dover who has him beat by two months. Maybe we can make a shedach!! He asks me to bring him a kosher Hebrew National bologna sandwich with mustard. He says he can't smell or taste it, but the garlic in the bologna wakes him up. Joe wishes all a Happy Chanukah.
