P.O. Box 773 Windsor, CT 06095 2012A 4 The Friends of Northwest Park 34th Country Fair Thirty-four years ago, The Friends of Northwest Park participated in the Town of Windsor’s 350th birthday celebration by sponsoring an Old-Fashioned Country Fair. The Fair has become a Windsor tradition and is cherished by the entire community. From the beginning, the Friends have been committed to providing a day of old-fashioned fun, games, entertainment and activities for all ages. The Fair gives the Friends an opportunity to showcase the Park and Nature Center by encouraging families to discover the many ways the Park can provide leisure, education and recreational opportunities. This year we will be offering a silent auction in the warming shed featuring baskets, gifts, toys and services donated by local businesses and individuals. All proceeds will benefit the upgrade and expansion of the park’s maple sugar house. The goal remains to introduce the community to what is theirs to enjoy at Northwest Park. Fairgoers will quickly discover that Northwest Park truly is a gem for Windsor, with many great attractions including the Nature Center, Animal Barn, Luddy/Taylor Tobacco Museum Archive, hiking trails, picnic facilities, Maple Sugar House and many other natural treasures that the Park has to offer. The staff at the Park provide hundreds of hours of environmental activities for both children and adults. The Friends are proud to have assisted with the installation of a Geothermal Heating and Cooling System as well as many other projects to benefit the Nature Center. Proceeds from the Country Fair are used by the Friends to support programs, equipment, exhibits and other features of the Park. The Friends have contributed more than $800,000 to the Park in addition to their countless volunteer hours. The Friends actively assist the Park throughout the year and invite you to join them. Membership in the Friends is open to all. Please pick up membership information at the Nature Center, join online at: www.northwestpark.org/membership.htm or mail in the form on page four. The success of the Friends depends on people like you! The Park is open daily from dawn until dusk. Call the Nature Center at 860285-1886 or the Tobacco Museum at 860-285-1888 for hours of operation, exhibit information and programs. One of the hens in our barn has taken to laying eggs in the hayloft. We’re tired of broken eggs and at wit’s end, so we’re asking the public to design a device that will allow an egg to survive the drop without as much as a tiny crack! Only catch is…to test the true safety of your device, we have called in the Poquonock Fire Department. Using their Ladder truck that reaches up to 100 feet in the air, your device will take the ride of its life! Can you get the egg down safely?? Who can enter? Anyone!!!! Kids of all ages, engineers, taxi cab drivers, and adventurous adults! Family and team entries welcome at the Animal Barn! Guidelines The device can be any shape but must fit in a box 10” on a side. Large eggs will be supplied at the fair so you must be able to open and close your device. The egg will be inspected after being dropped from the ladder truck, 75-100 feet in the air. All entries having an unbroken, un-cracked egg are winners. There are no restrictions on the materials* however, consider the extra challenge of using materials that would be found naturally around the park. * No toxic, or explosive materials please! * No parachutes please 29 SPECIAL THANKS To all of the donors to our First Annual Silent Auction All proceeds from the Silent Auction will be donated to the upgrade and expansion of the Maple Sugaring House 30 31 32 33 Windsor Business Scarecrow Competition Vote for your favorite scarecrow before 2:15 PM.
