André Dessoude’s ‘family photo’…
« This year seven cars will be carrying the Team Dessoude logo, with talented drivers
and some great hopes. Leading the pack will be the two ’05 Protos and the 03 Pickup,
which can hope for good finishes, while in the T2 category we will be pushing to win.
One of the two Proto vehicles will be driven by Yvan Muller and navigated by René
Metge. This line-up, while possibly unexpected, will be very interesting. Yvan’s
inexperience on this sort of event will be more than compensated by René’s
experience. Yvan is a talented driver, and the precious advice from this three-time
Dakar winner will allow him to gain plenty of time and avoid many mistakes. This
combination should work. There will certainly be a big fight between Mitsubishi and
Volkswagen, and looking at things clearly, we will not be able to get involved. Our aim
will be to keep in contact with them. In Zouerat, before starting off on the main sand
section, we will see how we are placed. We will plan a careful race, taking care to
avoid all pressure.
The second Proto 05 will be driven by Miguel Barbosa. Miguel knows the car well,
having driven it in the Portuguese championship this season. He should be able to put
in a fine race, and has an excellent navigator. It is mainly a case of managing the race.
Someone who has learned all there is to know about race management is, of course,
Christian Lavieille. Christian, who will be driving the Pickup 03, is what can be called a
safe value. Moreover, it is very pleasant to work with such a driver. The 2006 T2
season, with his co-driver Arnaud Debron, was very beneficial. Now working with
François Borsotto, who has plenty of experience at a high level, they should form a
competitive duo. The crew is serious and the car is reliable. We can hope for a good
result.
The fourth T1 car, a Pathfinder, will be in the hands of a young Portuguese driver,
Madalena Antas. Madalena is still a rookie in this area, but is very serious. She has
done a number of tests with us and showed good potential, but her biggest task on this
Dakar will be to learn how to manage her race. The Pathfinder is a ‘traditional’ car,
compared to her previous experience, but it is very efficient. She will be able to count
on an experienced co-driver in order to help her reach her objective : to finish the race.
In the T2 category, we will certainly be fighting for the lead. After an absence of around
twelve years, Jean-Pierre Strugo will be back in the team, something we are very
pleased about. Jean-Pierre is an incomparable tactician, who has claimed the
Production World Cup on four occasions. He has to be one of the best teachers
around in terms of race management… The Pathfinder has proved its abilities over the
last few years, and I have high hopes of eventually winning this category.
The second T2 Pathfinder will be in the hands of a Team Dessoude regular, Paul
Belmondo. I hope that the bad luck which has followed Paul on the last two editions of
the Dakar is well and truly behind him. Working alongside Jean-Pierre Strugo, they
should be able to do some good work to lead the category.
The third T2 will be the Pathfinder driven by the ‘’girls’, Carole Montillet and Mélanie
Suchet. This will be something new for them, and will have to pay close attention to the
advice handed out by the ‘old hands’ in order to face the race in the best possible
conditions. Their main aim will not be the overall classification, but to reach the Rose
Lake.
So that is the family photo for this 2007 edition of the Dakar… A photo including plenty
of French drivers, something which pleases me greatly, and which will make
communication within the team even easier.
Our technical partnership with ORECA is going very well in this preparation phase.
Everyone is combining their knowledge, and we are making good progress. On the
terrain, Hugues de Chaunac will provide two engineers and two mechanics who will
work on the two Proto cars.
Our team will include seven race vehicles, two T4 tracks as rapid assistance, four T5
6X6 trucks for spare parts and assistance, and two T5 Patrols. The total team effective
will be nearly fifty people. We are trying to prepare a fine Dakar…»
Nr 319 : Yvan MULLER (FRA) – René METGE (FRA)
Proto Dessoude 05
This crew is made up of two strong personalities. An explosive cocktail which is
definitely to Yvan Muller’s taste…
« I can’t wait to get going. The two days I spent in Egypt were a glimpse (and just
a glimpse) of what awaits me during this Dakar. I am really delighted to be driving
with René. The idea of putting us together was both original and sensible. René is
an experienced driver, who knows the Dakar well. It will be a real learning
experience to have him alongside me. I am not putting any pressure on myself as
far as the results are concerned; I am there to learn. I have not looked too closely
at the route, as having no experience of the event, it doesn’t really mean much to
me. I prefer to face matters by banking on good daily management, and I am
ready for any ‘surprises’ …
René Metge is also very enthusiastic about this new role. ‘Professor’ René can’t
hide his smiles : « This 2007 Dakar is a real youth tonic for me. With over 20
editions of the Dakar to my credit (I can’t remember exactly how many), it’s
something new for me to be in the right-hand seat. When I stopped driving the
leading vehicles, my aim was to pass on my experience and to help others enjoy
the emotions I had known. This led to organising rallies, for example. But all my
experience of driving the Dakar, I would have really liked to have shared it with
someone … but who would be ready to accept that ? With Yvan, I think we have
found our man ! He is a very competitive driver, and ready to listen. It will be a real
joy to teach him the ways of the Dakar. This relationship will be based on sharing.
On his side, Yvan will have to forgive me if I made some navigational errors, as it
will be my first time in such a fast car. The Proto appears to be a good
compromise and, it must be said, comfortable, which is a real bonus in this type of
car. It will be harder than with the Pathfinder, but Yvan is a fine, precise driver. If
he is able to listen, he could finish his first Dakar in the top five. It will be necessary
to be patient, and to improve progressively, keeping the right pace. Morocco will
be important in order to gauge our position. The hardest thing on the Dakar is to
go ‘slowly’. My first impressions of Yvan’s ability to adapt to this area of the sport
are excellent. And moreover, it’s like seeing myself… twenty years ago !!!
N° 323 : Miguel BARBOSA (P) – Miguel RAMALHO (P)
Proto Dessoude 05
The second Proto Dessoude 05 will be in the hands of the Portuguese crew of
Miguel Barbosa- Miguel Ramalho. Unlike Yvan Muller, who will be discovering both
the Dakar and his vehicle, Miguel is already very familiar with both.
In 2006, the Portuguese duo put in a perfect Dakar with a T1 Nissan Pathfinder.
st
Finishing the event in 21 place overall, the team was named the best ‘rookie’.
This season, Miguel, who was taking part in the Portuguese TT Championship,
changed vehicle, while remaining with Team Dessoude. The talented young driver
moved to the Proto 05 for the second part of the season. With two overall wins and
claiming the RTP Cup, Miguel continued to make progress at each event.
For this Dakar, the two Proto 05 vehicles could put in a fine team race, and can
hope to claim good final results. And if Miguel Barbosa is a talented driver, his
navigator is equally good, which is a significant bonus on an event which promises
to be difficult. The Portuguese duo have high hopes, especially as starting from
home, in Lisbon, is always a stimulating factor. In front of his home crowds, Miguel
will be keen to shine, but you can be sure that he will keep his main objective in
mind : to get to Dakar… As André Dessoude says, « It’s all a case of race
management. »
Nr 317 : Christian LAVIEILLE (FRA) – François BORSOTTO (FRA)
Nissan Pickup 03
For the 2007 Dakar, Christian Lavieille is moving up a category. After winning the
world title in the T2 category this year with a Nissan Pathfinder, he will start his fourth
Dakar behind the wheel of a Nissan Pickup 03. A reliable car, still capable of good
results. But Christian has already been closely examining the route :
«For this route, the most important part will undoubtedly be Mauritania. That will be
the turning point of the event. It will be important to be vigilant at all times, but most
particularly in Mauritania, where it will be vital to avoid errors. I drove the Pickup at
Château Lastours, and it made a very good impression on me. To change
categories is a brand new challenge. A new car and a new team-mate, as François
Borsotto will be my navigator. After a fantastic season in T2, Arnaud Debron will be
back alongside Jean Louis Schlesser. Everything should go well with François. Like
me, he’s a biker, so he has the right mental attitude. Moreover, he has plenty of
experience. I’m quite serene. We have to find the right pace, while being
competitive, and without damaging the car. The special stages should seem shorter
than they did in 2006 … with the Nissan Patrol. »
François Borsotto also appears very enthusiastic :
«I have never driven with Christian, this will be the first time. But I’m used to driving
with good bikers!!! My approach to this Dakar will be slightly different to what I have
previously known, when we were fighting with the leaders without ever being able to
win. With Christian, we won’t be going for stage wins, that’s certain, but I know that I
can help him progress even more. As far as the route goes, it looks as if ‘sand’ will
be the main colour we’ll see, so it will be interesting. From Atar, there will be three
difficult stages. If we can manage our race until then, we will be able to do a good
job…”
Nr 422 : Madalena ANTAS CUPERTINO (P) – Patrick ANTONIOLLI (FRA)
Nissan Pathfinder T1
Having a female driver in his team is not something André Dessoude is likely to
complain about… This year, he will have three … Young, pretty Madalena Antas and
the explosive duo formed by skiers Carole Montillet and Mélanie Suchet, which will
be his only all-female crew.
Madalena’s navigator will be Patrick Antoniolli, a regular competitor in African races;
they will share a Nissan Pathfinder Super Production. A reliable, competitive car,
which should allow her to reach Dakar. Madalena might be young but is very
determined and serious in her approach to the sport. Having tested at Saint-Lô in
November, the young Portuguese driver showed good potential.
Facing her second Dakar this year, she is keen to finish the event and to gain as
much experience as possible.
Always willing, Madalena has understood the goals and will certainly try to reach
them. She will be able to benefit from the Dessoude team’s experience, and that of
the other crews in order to manage her race as best as possible
.
Nr 343 : Paul BELMONDO (FRA) – Guy LENEVEU (FRA)
Nissan Pathfinder T2
Remaining faithful to Team Dessoude, Paul Belmondo is once more under starter’s
orders :
«The Dakar is always a pleasure. This will be my 10th Dakar, and my 7th time with
Team Dessoude. I am really faithful to this team. Even if I haven not driven this
season, I know the Nissan Pathfinder well. In the Dakar, the aim is to get to the end,
having a good time and taking care of the vehicle. In Dakar, we’ll see were we are in
terms of the overall classification. I just hope that everything will go ‘normally’ this
year. I would like to be able to erase the misadventures during the last two editions.
But that’s racing and, in the end, you can’t do much about it. This will be my first time
with Guy Leneveu as navigator, but I’m not worried, as he is very experienced on this
sort of event. »
Guy is extremely familiar with Cross-Country rallies, having been Laurent Bourgnon’s
co-driver for a number of years.
« 2007 will be my 7th Dakar (including 6 with Laurent Bourgnon), and as Paul says,
the key words will be ‘ pleasure’… We will try to find the right pace, to move steadily
up the field, while concentrating on our main objective : to reach the Rose Lake. No
matter what, we will do all we can to meet the challenge ! »
Nr 345 : Jean-Pierre STRUGO (FRA) – Yves FERRI (FRA)
Nissan Pathfinder T2
A real asset in the T2 category, the crew of Strugo and Ferri will doubtlessly be able
to aim for victory. With four Production world titles, Jean-Pierre Strugo masters his
subject perfectly :
« On January 6th, I will start off on my 22nd edition of the Dakar (I’m slightly behind
André Dessoude…).This year will be something of a ‘back to my roots’ as I drove for
André between 1990 and 1994. For me, the Dakar is both a sporting challenge and
an opportunity to share an exceptional moment of conviviality. Therefore, I wanted to
return to the team with which I claimed my first results and my first wins. Back then, I
was driving a Nissan Terrano, and with the Pathfinder (which could be said to be its
descendant) I have found the same spirit. The vehicle is easy to drive, and gives you
a good feeling. I was pleasantly surprised by its manoeuvrability and vivacity. The
team is competitive and the atmosphere is very good. Having decided to leave
Mercedes (where I had slightly lost my bearing since Georges Groine left), I brought
my navigator with me. Therefore, Yves Ferri will be sharing the adventure with me.
th
There are few surprises on this 29 edition of the Dakar, as the route is very similar
to last year. The pace will increase progressively, with three or four decisive stages
in Mauritania. During the first third of the route, you have to manage things, in the
second third, you have to go for the win, and for the third section, confirm your exit
from Mauritania… »
Jean-Pierre Strugo, an expert in strategy, as always…
This is not Yves Ferri’s first time with Team Dessoude. In 97 and 98, he took part in
the Dakar with a T4 rapid assistance truck.
« My fast Dakar was in 1986, and this will be my 14th, including four with ‘Jipé’… I
am really very pleased to be doing another with him. He is a calm driver in all
circumstances. His only stipulation is to have precise notes at all times. We have a
good card to play, and I am staying zen… »
Nr 410 : Carole MONTILLET (FRA) – Mélanie SUCHET (FRA)
Nissan Pathfinder T2
Team Dessoude’s only 100% female crew, Carole Montillet and Mélanie Suchet are
impatient to fulfil one of their dreams, to take part in the Dakar…
«We are very excited by what is in store for us, the unknown, adventures and
misadventures… To be quite honest, the first big adventure in this project was to find
the financing ! We managed that part of the programme ourselves, and we have
been fighting for months. Our joint motivation allowed us to find the necessary
resources to get to the end, but it was far from easy. Our first impression when we
got behind the wheel at the Galicet, was that we were driving a real race car. We
had good feelings behind the wheel. On the event, we will take it in turns to drive,
and if the liaison sections are long, we’ll do stints each. Depending on the route and
the sort of terrain, we will use our strong points accordingly. Mélanie is better on
sand, while I’m more at ease in the winding sections. Mélanie likes navigation, while
I am not quite so keen. We will change depending on the circumstances. Our aim is
to share everything, the good and the bad. Our aim this year is to finish the rally and
reach Dakar. It will be our biggest reward. We are in a team which will give us what
we need to achieve our goal, we are convinced of that. We will have to listen to our
‘elders’, and considering the quality of the crews driving for the Team, we should be
able to depend on their experience.
Physically, we are well prepared. The physical trainer who looked after us when we
were skiing took us in charge. We focused on endurance and muscle training. We
undertook a very serious training programme to put everything on our side. For the
last eight months, our minds have been on the Dakar ! »

TWO MARATHON STAGES (without assistance)
At the end of the stages leading to Tichit and Timbuktu, those vehicles entered in the race
as assistance vehicles will not be allowed into the bivouac. The crews are only allowed to
help themselves and each other. Particular care will need to be taken of the machines in
this section of the rally, where over 2500 km will be covered with just one ‘pit stop’.
THE ROSE LAKE GRAND PRIX
The classification of the 29th Dakar will be frozen on Saturday January 20th, at the end of
the Tambacounda – Dakar stage. The traditional Rose Lake stage will become a Grand
Prix, independent of the other stages, which will take place on Sunday 21st January on a
symmetrical circuit.
