Gobles Public Schools Foundation Newsletter

Treasurer’s Report
The Gobles Public Schools Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that was
established to help promote worthwhile programs for students by
providing funds that are not part of the normal school operating
budget. Since its inception, the Foundation has been able to fund
youth leadership and fine arts camp scholarships, guest speaker
appearances, school play, senior projects, teacher training materials,
and other great projects. Given the volatility of state funding for
public schools, it is important for our Foundation to continue to
assist those individuals or organizations in need.
The Foundation is funded by the generosity of the Gobles
community. Donations come in the form of direct donations to the
Foundation, memorial contributions, endowments, or the purchase
of a brick that is part of the recognition wall. The Foundation Board
meets semi-annually to evaluate grant applications and provide
funding where they deem necessary.
As of September 2014, total Foundation money totaled over
$200,000. $150,000 is donor restricted funds set aside for school
scholarships, Elementary Parents Club, Grad Bash, and Gobles
Band Boosters. The remaining funds are spent at the discretion
of the Foundation Board for school related grants. $9,000 is
donor restricted for the Foundation to disburse, $40,000 is held in
endowment, and $3,000 is unrestricted.
As 2013 comes to a close, please consider the Foundation in
making year end tax-deductible contributions. There are several
different gift options, and keep in mind that many employers will
match charitable contributions. We encourage you to contact a
Gobles Public Schools Foundation Board Member to learn how you
can contribute to the success of the Foundation. Thank you again
for supporting your Gobles Public Schools Foundation.
Legendary Teacher
Dr. Nicholas Clement
We all can probably name a teacher that was legendary to each of
us. It is not going to be the same for each person. Each person may
be affected in different ways.
Gobles alumnus Dr. Nicholas Clement has written a book
Legendary Teacher Stories “How to Catch a Swamp Frog”. In the
book Dr. Clement shares some of his life stories and how they relate
to his legendary teachers.
Dr. Clement is the Ernest W. McFarland Citizens Chair in
Education at Northern Arizona University. He earned his B.A. in
Special Education at the University of Michigan, his Masters from
University of Nevada, Las Vegas and his Doctorate in Educational
Leadership at the University of Arizona.
The Foundation has purchased this year a copy of this book for
each of its teaching staff. The Foundation feels that each of the
teachers at Gobles will be legendary to someone that they have in
their classroom. We should celebrate their efforts every day.
We are sure if you stop and think about it you were touched at
some time by someone that you feel was a Legendary Teacher.
Math & Science Week
New Art Medium Request
Granted by Foundation
The Gobles Foundation recently supported a grant to allow
the art department to buy a new medium for the advanced art
students to use. Mrs. Butler, high school art teacher, stated, “With
budget cuts as they have been it’s been a struggle to even keep my
inventories of our common media stocked adequately and ready
for each new school year. As a result, it has been many years since
I introduced a new medium as a choice for my advanced students.”
The new media is Gouache. It is a water-based painting medium
that is being used more and more at the college level. Now advanced
students can be introduced to it and be that much more prepared
should they choose to pursue post high school art experiences.
Currently, Art II introduces students to many different art materials:
included are pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, pen & ink, plaster
(3-D sculpting), oils, and acrylics. New media for Art III and IV
students are scratchboard, oil pastels, and conte to name a few –
now gouache is an option, too!
Another perk of this grant is the addition of black canvas as a
ground for the new medium. The use of black canvas is getting
more and more popular.
Mrs. Butler is very excited with the new supplies and the creative
options they will allow. She would like to thank the Foundation for
the support!
I am writing this letter to thank you for purchasing the Lego
Mindstorm EV3 sets for my 6th grade classroom. I was very excited
when I was chosen to teach the 6th grade STEM class. STEM stands
for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Over the
summer I was able to attend a training in Designing and Modeling
using a 3D drawing program called Inventor. In addition I have
been to a training class to use the Lego Mindstorm sets with my
students.
The 3-D drawing program allows students to brainstorm and draw
their solutions to real-world problems while the EV3 sets allow
students to engineer their solutions.
The STEM class has been a huge success and I have only heard
great comments from parents whose children have been in my
STEM classroom both last year and this year. The students are
loving the hands-on approach to practice skills such as creative
thinking, problem solving, teamwork and communication skills.
Thank you again for your generosity and willingness to make
Gobles Public Schools a place where students learn and grow with
a quality education. Your donation has helped to make some 6th
grade students a little more excited about science, technology,
engineering and math! That is good news for those students when
you hear the statistic that by 2018, the United States will have
more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs.
There are good things happening in the classrooms of GPS thanks
to your Foundation!
Sincerely
The Foundation Buzzes-in Support
for the Gobles Quiz Bowl Teams!
One new Quiz Pro lock-out system and another professionally
refurbished one will be in use when the Gobles Quiz Bowl teams
begin competitions this winter season!
During a Quiz Bowl meet, questions are read by an Emcee and a
lock-out system allows the Emcee to know which team, and which
member on that team, buzzed-in to answer first. Last year, malfunctions with the system caused issues during many practice sessions and during more than one SAC Quiz Bowl meet.
Coach, Carrie Butler, said that having new machines will help
the season run smoothly. “Last year we had to reschedule 2 games
due to buzzer malfunctions – it was at the end of the season and it
was hard to get all of the games in before tournaments!”
The Gobles Quiz Bowl Team and the SAC Quiz Bowl League appreciate the support of the Gobles Foundation. League play begins
in late January. The season schedule will be released to the school
website a few weeks before we begin. The community is invited to
attend and support the team.
GOBLES MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Gobles Foundation,
Leah Herman
The Phonics Dance
During the week of October 20–24 the Elementary highlighted the
importance of Math & Science with a variety of special events and
activities. With support from the Gobles Foundation and the Elementary Parents’ Club, we were fortunate to offer several unique
opportunities for students, parents, and the community.
Special events for the week included:
Dress up days. Students were encouraged to make this a special
week by dressing up according to the schedule of daily events being held; aliens and astronauts, aviator clothing, wacky clothes, and
clothing with numbers on them.
■
Dome Theater Mobile Planetarium. This traveling, inflatable
dome offered the wonders of Earth and the thrill of our surrounding universe. Each classroom visited the Dome Theater during the
school day. The Dome Theater remained in the elementary gym for
parents and others to see a 20-30 minute show and visit during the
evening.
■
■ The Aviation School at WMU was here with a mobile airplane
and presentation. This was for students in grades 3rd-5th.
Wacky Science Assemblies. More than just whiz, bang, poof and
pop, this proven show puts science in the hands of more than a
dozen on stage volunteers. With a focus on science with everyday
objects, Dr. Science makes the Scientific Method easy to understand. This is the only show to ever win Dow Chemical’s TouchTech Award for excellence in hands-on science education.
■
Math & Science Fair. On Thursday, October 23, we invited all
parents/guardians and guests of students to join in the Math &
Science Fair. In most of our classrooms, short presentations and
hands-on activities were available for students and guests to participate in. Many individuals and organizations from the area agreed
to volunteer their expertise and time for the benefit of our students.
■
Math & Science Basket Raffles. We assembled 17 different baskets for a student raffle that took place on Friday, October 24. Students earned raffle tickets by participating in take home activities
and by participating in events during the Math & Science Fair.
■
A special thank you to the Gobles Public Schools Foundation for
supporting our Elementary Math & Science Fair and the Gobles
Elementary Parents’ Club for supporting the Dome Theater Planetarium.

Who doesn’t love to get up, say a rhyme,
and put your best moves to it? I know about
twenty-one five year olds that ask for and
need this type of instruction. As the recipient
of a Gobles Education Foundation Grant, I
was able to purchase an alphabet program
called the Phonics Dance. This program gets students out of their
seats and interacting with the alphabet! Each poster allows the
students to see the letter, the rhyme helps them to hear and master
the sound, and the motion creates a full body memory. The best
part about this program is that it doesn’t stop there! After mastery
of letters and sounds is achieved, the students build onto this core
knowledge with decoding words and writing strategies to help
them develop their writing.
As a Kindergarten Teacher, I am constantly working to find ways
to reach all of my students and help them to master their alphabet
identification and letter sounds. I feel so fortunate to have such a
great program that will allow me to reinforce skills for some of my
students and teach new letters to those who don’t know them all,
yet. I look forward to sharing this program with my colleagues so
that they can use it with their students.
Foundation Recognition Wall
The Recognition Wall is a significant source of revenue for the Foundation. The
wall is a permanent display that honors contributors to the foundation, while
providing a chance to recognize special individuals in their lives. The solid-oak
engraved bricks may be purchased as a gift (holiday, birthday, etc.), to commemorate events, as a class challenge, or in memory of a loved one. Brick prices start as
low as $100, and that includes two lines of print, with twenty characters per line.
If you are interested in purchasing a brick, please complete the information below,

Kalamazoo Wings Education Day
Hockey Game
On Wednesday, November 12, Bloomingdale and Pullman Elementary students attended
the Kalamazoo Wings Annual Education Day Hockey Game. The game was presented by
United Healthcare. The K-Wings played against the Ft. Wayne Komets. Slappy, the team’s
mascot was on hand to throw T-shirts to the crowd and help cheer on the K-Wings. Our
school brought 397 students, parent chaperones, and school staff to the game.
The game ended with the Komets claiming victory 4-0. Even though there was not a lot to
cheer about; the students, chaperones, and staff all had a great time making noise, feasting
on concessions and purchasing souvenirs. There were plenty of smiles and good times.
Alan Bobalik
This is the 11th year that our elementary schools have taken part in the Kalamazoo
Wings Education Day. The elementary physical education teachers from Pullman and
Bloomingdale, Mr. Visscher and Mr. Tremblay, would like to thank the Kalamazoo Wings
organization, the parent chaperones, the elementary teachers, and staff for helping with
this memorable day.
The Bloomingdale staff would like to welcome Mr. Alan Bobalik to their staff. Alan
will fill the secondary technology teaching
vacancy. He received his Bachelor’s Degree
from Western Michigan University in earth
and space science, has a minor in history,
and a Master’s Degree from Michigan State
University in educational technology. He is
Project Lead The Way certified in Introduction to Engineering and Design as well as
Engineering Design and Development. Alan
has experience coaching both cross country
and basketball at the middle school level. Mr.
Bobalik is in his 8th year of teaching having
previously taught science and engineering
at Garrett High School in Garrett, Indiana.
He is excited to be back living in southwest
Michigan with his wife Amanda. In his spare
time Alan enjoys reading, running, and traveling. Mr. Bobalik will be a great asset to the
team. Go Cardinals!

MSBOA Marching Festival
On Wednesday, October 8, after weeks of hard work and
dedication, the Bloomingdale Marching Band travelled to
Paw Paw’s Falan Field to compete in the MSBOA District 6
Marching Band Festival. Eleven other schools competed at
the event as well, including Bangor, Gobles, and South Haven. The Marching Band presented a dynamic performance
of their show, entitled “Of Castles and Dragons” and received
a Division I rating, the highest award given! Congratulations
to the 2014 Bloomingdale Marching Band!
University Band Days
Ten members of the Bloomingdale Marching Band participated in GVSU’s Band Day and WMU’s Band Day on Saturday, November 8, and Saturday, November 15, respectively.
These students, along with several hundred, area high school
students joined the Laker and Bronco Marching Bands to put
on exciting halftime performances after having rehearsed all
morning with each ensemble. Despite cold, rainy, and snowy
weather, all of the Bloomingdale students expressed that they
had a wonderful time!

Meyer Music Honors Band
On Saturday, November 22, Emily Fluty and Tamara Warden participated in the Meyer Music Honors Band, hosted
by Caledonia High School. These students, nominated for
being exemplar musicians were then chosen by Meyer Music
to participate and received the music for the concert, which
they prepared on their own time. These ladies devoted their
personal time on that Saturday to rehearse with the ensemble
under the direction of Dr. Tiffany Engle, Director of Bands at
Calvin College, and put on a performance that evening. Both
Emily and Tamara greatly enjoyed the experience.
New this fall, play video games at school!
No, not in class or for credit, and it’s strictly
a bring-your-own affair but Bloomingdale
High School has a new gaming club. Members of the new Gaming Club meet once a
week, bringing different gaming systems
and games each time. It’s not just Nintendo and Play Station that get the love. The
weekly sessions include computer games,
pick-up Dungeons and Dragons games, and
tabletop games.
Interested? See Ms. Wenger in Room 12 for
a permission slip. (Some of the games have
a “T for teen” or higher rating so parental permission is required.) Meetings run
3-4:30 pm every Thursday. This is a highschool only club and students are responsible for their own transportation home.

Student Council 2014-2015
The elementary student council is off to a busy start this
school year. This fall, not only have they planned some exciting activities for the students, they are also giving back
to the community. During the month of November, they
sponsored a food drive. Our school collected almost 700
items that were donated to the area food bank. This month
we will be decorating a tree for Camp Kidwell to help
sponsor their camp programs. As President Hailey Taylor says, “It is such a great feeling to give to others during
this time of year.” We are looking forward to many student
council activities this school year.
Bloomingdale Elementary and Pullman Elementary will be
holding their annual Santa Shop from December 8th through
December 12th.
This year’s members are President, Hailey Taylor, Vicepresident, Ian Elrod, Secretary- Elisha Rude, TreasureAllison Starbuck, 5th grade Representatives - Marissa
Latham, Jessie Pierritz, Haley Westerhoff, Emma Allison
and 4th Grade Representatives- Madryn Hegelmann,
Aquinnah Kelly, Olivia Kelly, and Olivia Greene. On Thursday, November 20, the Bloomingdale and Pullman
Elementary 4th and 5th graders took part in their first get together
of the year. It has become a tradition for the Bloomingdale and
Pullman students to visit each other several times throughout the
year in an effort to get to know one another before joining together
as middle school students. As a district, we feel it is important to
begin fostering friendships now, in an effort to build relationships
amongst the group of students who will continue on through
middle school and high school together. During our visits, students
participate in a variety of centers including team building activities,
trivia questions, and various other getting-to-know-you activities.
Every year students look forward to visiting each of the buildings
and really enjoy their time making new friends. Here are just a few
of the comments we heard from the students.
Alejandro, 5th grader, “We were able to
sit together & talk with both Pullman &
Bloomingdale students which helps me feel
encouraged about middle school.”
Austin, 5th grader, “I liked sharing and learning
information about each other.”
Eliana, 5th grader, “I was able to meet new friends.
Some of us had a lot in common and some of us
didn’t, but we all got along well.”
Lee S, 4th grader, “If we didn’t have the
collaboration trip, we wouldn’t know each other
in middle school. The Bloomingdale kids would
only know the Bloomingdale kids, and the Pullman
kids would only know each other. People would
feel left out. That is why it is important to have
the trip.”
Olivia G, 4th grader, “When we went to Pullman it
was nice to meet new friends.”

In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 cats; in
six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs. The Humane Society of the United States estimates the number of cats and dogs entering shelters
each year to be between eight and ten million, with four to five million of those animals being
euthanized. There are too many pets and not enough homes.
